Game 15: Hive Five

I'm just gonna go with bullets for this one. I know this was the second game on the road of a back to back. But the problem wasn't fatigue. It was discipline. Absolutely no discipline on the glass- no boxing out, and pointless fouls on plays where guys were already boxed out. No discipline on defense- the Blazers were driving to the rim at will. I don't mean any disrespect to the Blazers, but the Hornets just tossed this game away. That second half was pure garbage, and I'm sure every player in the locker room knows it.

Afb55232-1477-4ce4-9476-6d9d41c0ca01_medium

"Right this way, sir. Would you prefer the scrumptious pass to an un-gaurded teammate for three, or our in-house favorite: the delicious one handed layup? Both can be served with a fine glass of "pointless touch foul."

  • 5 turnovers from Chris Paul. His TO's have been high(er) this year, and I keep expecting it to even out. His ability to take such good care of the ball despite handling so many possessions is what made him special last year. He couldn't have lost it suddenly, right?

Star-divide

  • 5-15, 10 points, 3 rebounds from David West. You know, I don't mind the 33% shooting line. Players go in and out of slumps, whatever. But that 3 rebound stat just eats at me. West has simply not been trying on the glass this year. It's a lack of effort. He simply hasn't hustled to balls off the glass, balls on the floor, balls anywhere really. He earned his minutes as a rookie by rebounding over 7 footers, over guys that weighed 30 to 40 pounds more than him. Now he's getting out rebounded by Brandon Roy. West is one of the last guys in the league I'd peg to not give his all, every night. I know that's maybe the harshest criticism I can give to a player. But I'm not going to shy away from what is so clearly visible. David West isn't trying on the boards.
  • Sean Marks took 15 foot+ jumpers on three consecutive possessions. Three consecutive possessions. Melvin Ely, who impressed in Denver last night, didn't play. Byron Scott, I don't know what to say.
  • The bench is Abominable. Abysmal. Alarming. Appalling. Atrocious. Awful. Deplorable. Depressing. Disconcerting Disgusting. Disquieting. Distressing. Disturbing. Dreadful.  Frightful. Ghastly. Hideous. Horrifying. Repulsive. Shocking. Vexing. BAD.
  • 4th quarter. Hornets in position to possible make a come back. Sean Marks hits a potentially momentum changing three. Here's how New Orleans' next 4 defensive possessions go:
  1. Travis Outlaw makes lay up
  2. Brandon Roy makes 4 foot floater
  3. Rudy Fernandez makes layup
  4. Travis Outlaw fouled on 0 foot shot, makes both free throws
  • Notice something? Four key defensive plays, four must have stops, and the Hornets give up four shots within four feet of the basket. Ball game.
  • Brandon Roy dominated this game. 11-16, 25/10/6 with 2 turnovers. He owned Chris Paul, owned James Posey, owned our ball boys. Props to him.
  • Portland took 7 free throws in the definitive 11 minutes of the 4th quarter. The Hornets? Took zero.
  • 7 blocked shots for Portland, 2 for New Orleans. Yet another category the Blazers dominated at. Pretty much every drive for New Orleans, there was the looming threat of a shot block waiting at the rim. Pretty much every drive for Portland, there was the looming threat of a weak foul and a defender waiting to dish out a complimentary three point play.
  • Sorry if it seems like I'm hating on Marks. I love the guy. This video JChangNZ posted in the game thread shows the dude can ball. But we needed Ely's rebounding tonight, and I would've liked to see Scott go to a red hot Peja more often. Very few players, no matter how good they are at shooting, can miss 10-15 games, come off the bench cold, and reliably drill long jumpers. In all honesty, I'd be very happy if Marks was worked into the offense more, in place of Hilton. But tonight was neither the time nor the place.
  • I'm willing to acquire Stephon Marbury at this point. I'd rather have a dysfunctional locker room than a dysfunctional bench. The Devin Brown experiment needs to end pronto. The guy is not a point guard. Everyone jumped all over Mike James for "not passing enough." Why should Brown get a pass for shooting 8 (mostly awful) shots and 1 assist? Is it because he doesn't "look" like a point guard and is doing a more "difficult" job and should get more slack for it? How does that make any sense?
  • Brandon Hoffman of Baller Blogger wrote a great article for RealGM today about the Hornets. His conclusion: "Until the Hornets find a serviceable backup for CP3, I’m afraid they’ll remain on the outside looking in and championship contention." I have to agree. Mark it down: the Hornets, as presently constructed, will not win an NBA championship. One of two things must happen- a player acquisition or smart, strategic manipulation of the lineup. The longer Byron Scott proves unable to perform the latter, the more pressured Jeff Bower will be to opt for the former.
  • Was that last sentence eloquent or what?

Oof.

Under-performing is the pits. I was yelling for the entire second half (in a Buffalo Wild Wings, no less) at every player on our roster. Either someone was getting beat off the dribble, failing to box out the other team, or fouling like it’s a stat you want to accumulate. Seriously, my ridiculous yelling and lamenting went on for 24 minutes straight.

Oh, and when are we giving Hilton his two weeks notice? He’s more useless than steak sauce in India… goddammit anyway!

From blazersedge,

Brandon Roy just had a great game today and Aldridge was shooting well. The 5 turnovers from Chris Paul seemed to be from the press that Aldridge or Outlaw and Blake or Sergio had. Paul seemed to dodge it and still manage to set up the offense and score in the first half, but I guess he kinda got tired in the 2nd half.

Right

The Blazers just gave them an open invitation to dribble in for a layin but they somehow lost the ball anyway. Come on man, give the Blazers some credit!

I mean cmon guys, just admit you got destroyed by the better team on their home floor tonight. That’s not to say the Blazers are a better team overall, but this game they were.

Sour grapes anyone? QQ

I have nothing but respect for you (I read your piece on dime – EXCEPTIONAL) but lets just say some Blazer fans haven’t learned how to take a win gracefully (remember the last few years we didn’t have many wins) I hope you won’t hold it against the entire fan base. Good luck the rest of the year

It’s just funny to me how someone would find it surprising that the recap on the Hornets blog focused on, ya know, the breakdowns/successes on the Hornets end.

"Better Team"?

I see the series as 1-1 this year, with the victory going to the home team both times. I’m willing to say that when you give up a 17-0 run, you’re not the better team that night. End of story. Blazers earned this one. But we’ll be back.

Second Unit

Interesting, if harsh criticism of our second unit. #1, I still maintain our second unit has been its best when it comes out as once (currently Brown, Butler, Ju-Ju, Pose, and Hilt). But with Mo out, Butler starts, and while he’s been great, this screws up the rotation. #2, based on how quick Byron yanked Hilt and Ely back and forth last year, I’d expect to see Mike James given another chance, and maybe, just maybe, I’m willing to give it to him (and selfishly want him to succeed so I can repeatedly scream “I’m Mike James, bitch!”). #3 the fouls on our big men were strange tonight. Several were so blatantly non-fouls I wanted to claim they were wronged, but the remainder were such bone-headed fouls, you felt the refs probably just assumed they were going to play stupid all night. And once they stared getting in trouble, then it seemed as if our team rhythm was off.

I don’t know, man. This was a hard loss to swallow. Luckily I was good and drunk last night, and immediately went to show Mikey the Lakers-fan.com Machine clips over Youtube on my iPhone. I was crying I was laughing so hard. Or maybe it was the inevitable emotional catharsis that comes from such an ass-whooping. Whatever.

To Wednesday.

Hmmm

Interesting point about the second unit coming out all together. It came out in totally random pieces last night… I think you might be on to something here. I’m with you, I really think MJ gets one more chance here. It’s last resort before making a trade/move or something. One thing I really don’t get though is why does Devin Brown handle the ball even when Chris Paul is out there with the second unit? Makes no sense.

I'm not sure

Blazers fans should be this boastful after a single game, and even think we should NEVER be boastful by the way.
I don’t think, leeroyjenkins, it brings anything to anyone to come on others’ teams’ forums and claim that our Blazers ‘destroyed’ (????) another team…

by Blenzer on Nov 29, 2008 10:58 AM CST reply actions   1 recs

Not really

I don’t think anyone was being boastful. If anything, it is the Hornets thinking this game should have been theirs when reality is contrary. The Blazers won by 15 and had the game in control for most of the night. Matter of fact, why do you think the Blazers is undefeated at home? Sure luck?

The game in NO was a lot closer and in doubt until the very end. Thanks to Posey’s pair of threes at the end and Rudy’s missed, you guys pulled it out.

No one is saying the Blazers are a better team. They just won one game last night …deservingly.

by Balian on Nov 29, 2008 11:51 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I definitely think NO is the better team

at the moment. Portland has so much growing to do. McMillan has at least a couple more months of lineup experimentation and a third of his roster’s still getting acclimated to NBA life.

As a level headed fan of the NBA, i proclaim Portland’s roster to have more potential than yours – but that’s all it is right now: Potential.

Rest assured the Hornets are still the 2nd/3rd best team in the West… for now.

SOrry

Blenzer, You’ll have to forgive my Blazer brothers. It seems that some of them have learned bad habits from all the L@ker lovers that we have to deal with on our forums. I can say the Blazer fans finally have something to really be exicted about. It’s not just the one win over the Hornets. One thing that has probably gone unnoticed is the Blazers schedule. They were given the most difficult schedule of any team for at least the first 1/4 of the season. Most fans expected the usual results. Lots of losses, but instead were sitting on a winning percentage that we’ve not seen in 8 years. Combine that with having players that are not in the news for smoking pot, having stolen cell phones in their trunk, or trying to beat up a ref after a game and you have some pretty stoked fans that might not always show much humility. Anyway, were not all that way. I’m sure we will probably split the series, with the home team winning. The blazers look unstoppable some games and then can lay a serious egg too.

That night, that game… no.

At the end of the season… I’ll wait and see. For most of the season… yes. Blazers are still finding their way but they’re also doing it at an amazing speed. We’ll see if it sticks on the road games. Can they keep playing like this on the road? If they can… crazy scary. They’re looking a lot less raw than at the beginning of the season.

Ya, we have high hopes, and we feel that a win against the Hornets is a big one. It’s a compliment, but a few of us don’t know how to be polite about it. Sorry guys!

Yeah, some of us aren't getting carried away

Important win vs you guys last night, but I don’t think any reasonable Blazers fan thinks we’re the better team right now. Roy played a great game and we went on a couple runs. It was certainly closer most of the game than the final score.

I went last night, and was also struck how David West didn’t really bring much to the table last night. Getting Aldridge out of his game seems to be one of the earmarks of a Blazer loss. West certainly didn’t seem interested in getting into it with him.

by FlynnPDX on Nov 29, 2008 1:45 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

I have to disagree with you on your bench play.

First of all, no matter the foul language that comes to mind when your #2 PG comes in it continues to remain that Your #2 PG > Our #2 PG. Sergio is making strides this year namely not turning the ball over 18 times a game and not turning the ball over 18 times a game :). Secondly, the rest of your bench outplayed, in my opinion our 2nd unit. It was hard to pinpoint as Nate’s 10 man rotation created some momentary mismatches but honestly Channing Frye refuses to rebound, Travis Outlaw is our worste individual defender, and only because he lacks the will to play defense and Rudy had a mediocre game, for him and that’s b/c , as Dave from BEDGE pointed out he is being forced to put the ball on the floor and isn’t left wide open anymore.

The first half was weird. I was sitting in my Inches from the Moon seat thinking, “they are gonna come back and kill us” “LMA cant keep guarding West like that, Paul is gonna smoke Blake and ROY, OH GAWWDDDD!” I had this perpetual feeling of impending doom that only a Blazer fan can understand I think . The point is, The Hornets are an awesome team and in my opinion are better than the Blazers are right now. Chris Paul is one of my favorite NBA players and my son has a poster of him on his wall. Paul and West play well off eachother, and when they are insinc, holy crap that’s an inpossible team to beat. I look foward to some good games in the future.

Now the obligitory never-gonna-happen trade idea:

RLEC + Travis (bench scorer) Blake (PG ) Bayless(backup PG) for Chris Paul :)LOL

good point about the bench. They actually did a decent job. I still haven’t looked at stats, but I do know that the blazer bench was pulling away and the lead actually went down when they were in. I remember posey hitting a number of shots and going… “ugh… that could be a problem.”

In the first half I agree with ya

The Hornets Bench did out play the Blazers bench, but in the 2nd half, the Blazers subs stepped it up and helped extend that 17-0 run to end the 3rd qtr.

I think the Fans here are not giving enough credit to the travel from Denver to Portland for a back to back. The Portland commentators(sp?) have always said that is the hardest back to back in the division for Portland and Denver, which is why I was grinning from ear to ear while watching the Hornets in Denver have to spend so much energy to win. I just knew they would not be able to stay with Portland if the Blazers came to play, and sure enough come the 3rd qtr they tired out and fell behind.

Every fan is hardest on their own teams players, but the Hornets bench is not that bad, and a back up PG is not a huge issue when you have CP3 playing 38+ mins a game. And for PDX, Sergio has really improved this year, and while Outlaw didn’t shoot well this game, he did bring energy and was apart of reason the Blazers pulled ahead and eventually won this game.

I can’t wait for the next one with the Hornets.

GO BLAZERS.

Various stuff...

I do think Paul’s turnovers will even out. Regardless, he’s avging 3.1 right now, which is still pretty standard for superstar guards who handle the bell a whole hell of a lot. Wade, Nash, Deron, Iverson, Kidd… are all averaging higher than 3.1- I imagine it’ll drop closer to last year’s 2.5 eventually. I’d say West’s 2.6 turnovers per game is a bigger problem… that’s pretty high for him. High turnovers and low rebounds from West? Maybe he isn’t trying as hard as he has in the past… don’t know why that would be, but I hope he gets it together. I hope Chandler can get back to last season form too. I think his problems may be psychological? We’ll see I guess. If he’s distracted by the new baby, well that I can understand.

Our bench is horrible… offensively, but I’ve seen some great defense from them so far, same as last year. When Byron puts in the 2nd unit, as a whole, and gets them to trap and press – they are usually really succesful at creating TO’s, forcing bad shots, and just generally getting on the other team’s nerves.

The current lineup…. probably will not win a championship. This is a team that can certainly make another good playoff run, possibly even get to the Conf. Finals… but we do need more depth. We need someone who can run the offense effectively off the bench. I love Devin Brown for his fearlessness… and that’s why other people aren’t piling on him like they did James. Atleast Brown seems to try… and he drives to the rim over and over again, and as a team that shoots too many jumpshots… that is something the Hornets need. Still, I agree that this team can’t reach the highest level when Chris Paul leaving the game ruins our offensive flow. I wonder if Damon Stoudamire would do a solid job? He’s a free agent… would probably sign for the vet. minimum.

No matter what happens, this is still going to be an exciting and largely succesful season… I’m pretty sure of that.

by Caleb462 on Nov 29, 2008 2:31 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Good point on Chandler's issues, Caleb

I too think a lot of it must be psychological. He hasn’t gotten a good rhythm yet (missed those two games for his ankle, missed the game for his kid), and one of his best friends on the team- Pargo- just left the continent. I hope he can put it together soon.

I’m with you on the bench defense. They play really good D, and all five of them (Wright, Butler, Posey, Armstrong, Butler) are terrific athletes. The offense is the real problem.

by atthehive on Nov 29, 2008 2:44 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

No disrespect to the Blazers, but it's the Hornets fault?

Sorry, I need to disagree.

I didn’t realize the foul calls were that far off, and the Hornets have a legitimate complaint there. I saw quite a few calls that weren’t called by the refs that were committed by the blazers. I was 12 seats away and I probably had a better view than the refs did as I was behind the basket.

The blazers have depth. This means they can run you into the ground. While other players get tired, the blazers pick up the game. This isn’t an accident, it’s intentional. That fraction of a second a player loses because they’re tired is all the difference in the world.

The blazers played incredible defense on Paul. He still got some points but the blazer point guards were DASHING like crazy refusing to let Paul do anything. he did anyways because he’s so darn good, but that’s not the hornets dropping the game, that’s the blazers REFUSING to let down their fans at home.

This game was physical. Lots of grabbing and holding by both teams. The blazers didn’t back down, like they might have in the past, and instead did it right back and stood their ground. The blazers were the team that wanted it more. The blazers were the team that was meaner. The blazers won this game and didn’t let New Orleans take it away because when that door started opening up, they kicked it shut right in the Hornets face.

You did disrespect the Blazers because the Hornets may have not played the best neither did the blazers and yet they won the game. Rudy struggled on offense as did travis. Oden looked for other avenues to help his team because he recognized that he was over matched on offense. Good teams find ways to win. The blazers were a VERY good team last night. Neither New Orleans or the Blazers played their best, but if you think New Orleans and New Orleans only lost this game, then you’re going to be in for a VERY big surprise come the end of the season.

If you single coverage Greg, he’ll score on you. If you double or triple him, he’ll pass out to a three point shooter. As the defense scrambles to cover him, he’ll pass to another and another. Check out the blazers 3pt shooting percentage.

If they don’t like the shot then it’s dished to someone who will attack the basket. The pass goes to Greg or back out to a 3 pt shooter that is definitely open at this point. You can’t single coverage because Aldridge or Roy or Oden will own you. You can’t double team because those threes will start chinging like vegas on an elderly retreat night.

I think you should take another look at the blazers. They’re starting to finally click and move as a team. The scary thing is they’re not even there yet. There’s still some mistakes that are made, open players not passed to, defense plays messed up, a center that is still figuring out his foot movement and how to be effective offensively, when double and tripled, in the NBA. This team can be very very good, and they’re starting to figure out how.

The hornets are also very good, but they lost to a better team tonight. They also lost to a different team, playwise, than the one they beat on their court. The team they played last night is finally starting to get it. Next meet up I expect will be close and in the Hornets favor. Even the best defenses can’t shut down players like Chris Paul and I expect both he and Wade will have a burning grudge against this blazer team. Please do note what the blazers did against Wade. It’s not New Orleans… this team is just that good and will only get better.

Greg Oden, where posters happen.

Again, I'm not saying the Blazers aren't good

If you followed the Game Thread, you’ll see I appreciated how well they played. But this is a Hornets blog. I’m going to talk about the Hornets’ problems and issues and how they can be fixed, first and foremost. If you want analysis on how the Blazers “won” the game, you won’t find it here. I’m going to be more focused on our stupid loose ball fouls that changed the game at the end of the third quarter. If you find that “disrespectful,” fine. Not going to change.

In all fairness I didn’t read the thread just the main post. Your comment makes sense and reminds me that I focus on particular things while ignoring others in my live game reports because those things are covered elsewhere. You focus your information to your audience and thus it may be absent other aspects because that’s not the story you’re telling.

A thought I have is that you also need to know the enemy though. What did the blazers do that pulled new orleans off of their game? How did the blazers break down what New Orleans attempted to build up?

I do get your point. You focus on the Hornets and what they can do or not do.

I don’t mean any disrespect to the Blazers, but the Hornets just tossed this game away.

My point is simply that the hornets didn’t toss the game away. The Blazers took it with how they forced the hornets to play defense and how the blazers directed the hornets offense with the team defense. Watch the rotations on the floor. Watch how many shots went up with hands in the faces. Watch how players are caught out of comfort zones because they were herded there.

Many times people will complain about their team not playing well, but a lot of times that’s because the game is a chess match and the other teams have countered that particular teams move. The blazers have seen that constantly over the past years. A 13 game winning streak and then losing because other teams figure us out. The blazers weren’t doing anything differently… and in part that was the problem because they hadn’t countered the counter. Last night the hornets were countered. It was done the night before to Wade. That’s two amazing players taken out of their game and you could say once it was just an off night for one of them… but twice?

Anyway, I’ll let it drop at that. My issue wasn’t in your post but that one line. I also understand and appreciate your stance.

I'm on your side ratbastird as far as the Blazers won this game.

I’ll give them credit. But the Hornets did blow it just as much as the PT won it. And you know what, the Blazers could just as easily have lost this one. At home. Yes. Get over it. No one is invincible anywhere. 6-0 at home is just one game away from being 6-1 and six away from being 6-6. A few stops could have killed that run and then maybe our shots would have fallen thereafter and your youngs would have been the ones getting frustrated and committing dumb fouls. It’s pretty stupid to assume your team is better when you’re 1-1 against the team you’re talking about. We each protected home court. Don’t read too much into it.

Agreed

as could a few of those fouls under the basket being called.

I’m not assuming the blazers are better at this point, but they were better in that game. I also expect New Orleans to be rather miffed and beat the blazers in the next game when they play better.

I’m definitely not of the mindset the Blazers are unbeatable at home. The home crowd is incredible but the blazers almost lost to freaking Sacramento minus some key players. They almost lost to a team we’ve murdered twice. Once in the preseason and once in the regular season. So, yeah… Blazers are totally beatable even at home.

Julian Wright/Blazers vs Hornets

Oh and one more thing… I’m one of those guys who wants to see more Julian. C’mon Scott… give him 20 a night. I know he’ll make mistakes, but I think he will also produce and help the offense when CP3 is out.

In reply to the above poster, re: who’s the better team? Collectively, the Blazers probably have more depth, so in that sense they have more all-around talent. However,I believe… quoting Drew Brees: “Our best is better than your best.”

Me too

JuJU HAS to play more. 8 minutes a game (especially on a night when Devin Brown was struggling that bad with his shot) is way, way too little. Julian doesn’t seem like one of those “revolt against the coach” guys as he seems really humble and down to Earth. But giving him so few minutes has to hurt his confidence.

I'm a Blazer fan... and I root the Hornets 78 games a year.

Watching the game, the Hornets lost it. It’s that simple. The Blazers took advantage of a bad game by a better team.

Blazer fans, Rohan is right. This is a Hornets blog and he will analyze the game from a Hornet perspective. How would the Blazersedge readership respond if Dave wrote last Monday’s game recap all about how much the Kings miss Kevin Martin?

Bottom line, this blog has great writing and does an excellent job breaking down the New Orleans Hornets. If you are looking for Blazer analysis, Dave and Ben do that quite well at Blazersedge.
