Game 4: Hive Live

Cd874fec-8f47-4a4e-8e6c-a3dbcd23e975_medium

Atlanta 87 (3-0)  |  New Orleans 79 (3-1)

Congratulations CP3: you almost beat the Atlanta Hawks. It might have helped if the rest of your team had showed up, but alas, you had no such luck. Of course, you've really got to hand it to this Hawks team for dialing in a strong performance (especially after beating the likes of Orlando and Philly).

Anyone who tuned into this game probably doesn't want to relive it, but for those of you who did see it, here's the recap in a nutshell:

  • Atlanta: 45 rebounds, 12 3PM
  • New Orleans: 35 rebounds, 7 3PM

In a game when the Hornets led just once (with 2:11 to play in the third) and were unable to top 80 points, Paul's stellar line of 22 points, 11 assists, 3 steals, and 2 turnovers could not offset a disappointing performance from the rest of Bees. Of course, some of the credit for tonight's loss has to go to Byron. When CP collected his second foul 6 minutes into the first quarter, Byron pulled Paul and let Mike James run the show for 9 solid minutes. During that time, the Hornets' scoring deficit went from 2 to 8.

You may be thinking that this move on Byron's part was totally justified, especially when you consider that CP ended up playing 37 minutes. And while that may be partially true, consider that had Paul been left in the game, we could have been playing at a higher level and (hopefully) exchanging shots, which could've kept the score close. Instead, Paul had to come back into a game in which the Hawks were totally dictating the pace while holding a sizable lead.

I completely understand this strategy for big men as playing in the paint leads to more contact which leads to more fouls. But when it's your game-changer and he averages only 2.5 PF/G over the course of his career, you leave him in. Especially when your  contingency plan = Mike James.

Star-divide

So, to recap, I capital "H" Hate the "bench a player because he gets 2 fouls early" strategy when it is applied to a player who is either directly or indirectly responsible for most of the team's points. It's nothing more than a good way to lose close games.

Another major problem with the Hornets' showing was rebounding. We gave them so many second chance buckets, it was shameful. At one point, late in the fourth with the score reasonably close, we gave up 3 offensive rebounds in a single possession... which of course ended in an open 3. Oof.

But enough gloom and doom. We played a bad game, but we've also gotten off to a great start. Our next 2 opponents are the Bobcats and the Heat, and (though I won't call either an automatic win) I'd say we have a fairly strong chance at starting 5-1. Let's make it happen.

***

Couple of observations before I leave you:

  • The refs botched a couple of easy calls (3 Hawks descended on Peja and knocked him down while he was shooting a trey and no one noticed) and fell for 2 blatant flops courtesy of Mike Bibby and Zaza Pachulia. Little disappointed there.
  • Every time I see or think of Zaza Pachulia, I immediately yell "NOTHING EASY! WE GO TO GAME SEVEN, BABY! " I was starting to wonder when that would get old, but the answer is clearly "never".
  • At half time, the score was 46-40. Of our 40, Chris had 19 of those points. And 1 assist.
  • The Hawks started the fourth with a 7-1 run that completely wiped out all of CP's work in the third (a quarter that ended 62-58 in favor of the Hornets).
  • Josh Smith is crazy athletic. His numbers rarely show it (except for blocks, maybe), but seeing him play in person was a bit of a treat. Now the only question that remains is whether or not he can kick himself into gear and be the baller he was born to be.

Correction: Misquoted the team assists when first published. Hornets finished with 24, Hawks with 19.

Ughhh

Mike James looks so ridiculously bad. Extremely poor decisions, terrible shot selection… what happened to 2006-2007 MJ?? If this keeps up, the Hornets will definitely have to make a move for a backup PG. I expect James to get one more game as CP’s backup. If he fails against the Bobcats, I think Devin Brown is first off the bench there. Jeff Bower should probably already looking into available points.

Agreed on the 2 foul mindless pulling. I was sort of hoping CP went the full 48 tonight. Charlotte on Friday, so plenty of time to rest up before the Lakers’ show down next week. Overall, Atlanta took hideously bad shots. I don’t know if I’ve seen the Nuggets have a chuck fest like that. They were lucky to have em drop. Btw, did you see Melo’s prediction that he would score 44 tonight (to honor Obama?) 16 at the half…

Awful shots, but...

When you get a million boards, you get to shoot that much more. And (law of averages) you’ll probably end up sinking some of them. Oof.

Oh, yeah. The Melo thing was cool. At least it was until he only dropped 28. Woodrow Wilson thanks you.

So where was CP in half 2?

CP was unstoppable in the first half, and single-handedly kept us in the game. I think he had 17 and 1 (or 3…it was low) or something. So he ended up getting more assists in the 2nd half, but only scored a few more (considering also he got his first basket about forty seconds into that half). Sometimes, CP, sometimes, you just have to recognize that no one is hitting anything and just do it all yourself. We all hate guys that try to do that all the time, but when you really need to, how can you fault that?

Yeah

He literally did not do a single thing in the 4th quarter. Whatever, at least he did it a ton last year so we know he can do it. Just a matter of actually doing it, I guess.Yeah, 19 and 1 in the first half.

I love the doom and gloom thread

in one of the Hornets forums. “WE ARE GOING TO DIE BECAUSE OUR BENCH IS THE WORST BENCH EVER AGAIN!”

Well, that or Peja was 3 for 13, none of the Hornets outside shooters could hit anything, and David West had an off game.

Hahaha

yeah, just one game. Peja and Tyson back together for the first time, crazy shooting by the Hawks. It’s November, it happens is the attitude we should have. Unless we lose to Charlotte.

Agreed

The guys were more flat than usual and Peja/Tyson are trying to come back from injury.

I’d be willing to bet that the 79 points will be their lowest total the whole season.

I'm no commie, but the Reds shall be the best again!

Hope so

Hope we don’t have one of those games we used to have against the Clippers a couple years ago..
