Daniels = PG Help?
[Ed- promoted from the FanPosts. My very initial thoughts: Daniels and James are absurdly similar in many ways. Both 33, both have 6.5 mil contracts that are (virtually) guaranteed for next season, both on the downtrend. Thing is, James' downtrend has been stunningly faster than Daniels, and Daniels still looks to have some value. Myself or Lee should have a full post up later, for now here's the report.]
According to the Washington Post, the Hornets may be getting Antonio Daniels:
According to a league source with knowledge of the situation, the Wizards, New Orleans Hornets and Memphis Grizzlies are closing in on a three-team trade.
The Wizards will acquire guards Javaris Crittenton (Memphis) and Mike James (New Orleans). The Hornets will get Antonio Daniels from the Wizards and possibly a conditional draft pick from Memphis. The Grizzlies would get the conditional first round pick they sent to Washington for Juan Carlos Navarro before last season. To Wizards will release PG Dee Brown to make room on the roster. Brown, who was signed to a partially guaranteed deal before the season, has started 11 games but has recently seen his playing time reduced.
Don't feel it's the worst thing, as AD still is viable for backup minutes at point. Losing Mike James definitely isn't a loss. Only thing is Daniels could be quite unreliable as he's shown to be pretty injury prone the last few years. What do you guys think?
Update 1: Hornets get a conditional 2nd rounder in the deal. Conditions unspecified for now. (11:45 CST, ESPN)
Update 2: The conditional second rounder will be a 2015 draft pick (11:50 CST, Yahoo!)
Update 3: Daniels currently has a bruised tailbone, as of Monday this week. He was available for the Wizards' game on Tuesday however.
Update 4: Daniels will arrive in NOLA tomorrow for his physical. That means James won't be able to play against Boston for Washington tomorrow (probably). Uncertain whether Daniels will travel with the team to Boston on Friday. (12:40 CST, Times-Pic)
Update 5: Couple sound bytes, courtesy of Jeff Bower and Byron Scott. Bower: "We are excited to get a player of Antonio’s caliber. He is a guard with excellent size, versatility and toughness. Daniels is also a proven veteran who has won a championship and we look forward to all of those attributes strengthening our bench." Scott: "AD has always been a steady, proven guard in this league. He has won at the highest level and is a clutch player; he also gives us a different look in the backcourt with his size."
Update 6: A nice piece from Bullets Forever about AD. An exerpt: "Why doesn't AD get more love? He's simply not as flashy as Gordon or as dynamic as Barbosa or Paul Millsap. He comes in there and simply does his thing night in and night out. It doesn't seem possible that someone can not be flashy while still being an ace sixth man, but Daniels proves that the task can be done. Combine that with his veteran leadership and his incredible generosity off the court, and I'm proud to say that Antonio Daniels plays for my team." Great read.

Yep
I think Washington is the (projected) winner of this deal. Add Crittenton for the price of swapping James and Daniels. Memphis gets WAS’s first rounder back also, which is probably a good thing. I’m sure it’s top-3 protected at the least though.

I agree …. I think Crittenton was a very valuable acquisition for the Wizards

Funny how a lot of people
said he was the “key” acquisition in return for Pau (with Marc Gasol coming overseas an uncertainty). Now he’s traded away, having hardly played…

I’m a big fan of his. I thought he was very impressive in summer league and in games for the Lakers. It’s a pity he ended up on a team that was already committed to two other young point guards and then added another combo guard in OJ Mayo.

Adrian Woj's take
Posted on Yahoo:
Fighting to stay afloat without Gilbert Arenas, the Washington Wizards acquired guards Javaris Crittenton and Mike James in a three-way trade on Wednesday, league executives said.
Washington sent guard Antonio Daniels to the New Orleans Hornets for James, and returned a conditional first-round pick to Memphis for Crittenton that the Wizards had picked up in the 2007 Juan Carlos Navarro trade. Memphis also sent a 2015 second-round pick to New Orleans.
Washington is still waiting on the surgery on Arenas’ left knee, and are still unsure of his timetable for return. Wizards officials had targeted Crittenton in the 2007 draft, but missed on him when Memphis selected him 19th. The Wizards released guard Dee Brown to make room on the roster.
The Hornets have struggled to find depth behind All-Star Chris Paul and the veteran Daniels gives them a big, physical guard that they’ve lacked on the floor.

…LeBron will have won like 4 titles with the Knicks. How can you possibly trade something that far in advance?

I wonder how soon Daniels can get here.
I’m assuming he’ll be here for Boston on Friday if physicals complete today.

I think we make out like bandits
Considering Daniels was actually playing and James wasn’t. I mean, anything you get for James straight up has to be a steal, considering he was deep in the doghouse. Also Daniels is 2 inches taller.
The deal is on the Hornets website, btw, so I’m calling that official.

Yeah, ESPN just gave it the official a few minutes ago
Agreed on James, he was rotting away anyways. Knock on wood, Daniels seems to be a very durable players also.

New Update:
Daniels comes to NOLA with a bruised tailbone. FWIW

happy we made a move.
daniels with a bruised tailbone is still better than mike james, lol! i wonder who loses minutes in the rotation at the swingman position. brown won’t be needed to run the point and there is mopete and rasual battling for minutes. posey shouldn’t be affected.

Yep
Daniels on one leg has been significantly better than James on two. And from what I gather from Wizards’ blogs, Daniels is just starting to get healthy again. I think it’ll go Daniels/Brown/Peterson/Posey/Armstrong with Wright the odd man out. If either Brown or Pete struggle, Marks will continue to get minutes I think.

Hey, Rohan
you posted a while ago that the second unit lacked a player with a good AST%. I would assume Daniels is an upgrade in this area? He seems like a decent enough player.

Good point
Daniels has been a great passer at points in his career, and he squeezes in right in the middle of the pack for backups in his career averages (24%). So very close to the Pargo range, minus the bad shots.

I think it’s all upside for the Hornets considering Mike James wasn’t going to play anyway.
I’m doubtful over Antonio Daniels though, he lost his starting spot to Dee Brown this season and looks to have declined quite a lot since last season. If he can regain those performances levels he’ll be a good addition, but if not I’m not sure that he improves on Devin Brown. Defensively he has been poor for Washington.
Daniels is very intelligent and a good floor general though, so at the minimum he can give the offense some direction

by NBR on Dec 10, 2008 1:04 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
From what I can tell
A lot of his decline has to be chalked up to health issues. He’s had a variety of ailments recently so I think he can return to the 13 PER range if Byron game plans well (which I believe he will). I’m not too worried about his D because our second unit excels at help D more than anything, especially converging quickly on drivers. So there’s that.
I agree that he can give some offensive direction, that’s the one thing sorely lacking.
by atthehive on Dec 10, 2008 1:08 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes it might be that. I remember the injuries but he seems to have been back awhile now without a major upturn in performance. Maybe he came back early and has been playing through some injuries.
If Daniels can return to his performance levels of last season I think he’s a good addition and will be a good answer at the backup point.

Wiz fan from Bullets Forever here
AD is a great floor leader, and should do a good job of backing up Chris Paul. The reason I see him succeeding better in NO is because he has Peja, Mo Pete, Posey and West to pass to, where in DC his shooters weren’t necessarily as good spotting up.
He might be on the decline, but he is definitely an optimist, something I don’t think Mike James is. He’ll at least be a good locker room presence/leader until he gets healthy for you guys.
Granted, he can’t shoot, so he won’t be as effective as Pargo was for you all last year, but he plays with a lot of hustle and is a good veteran.

Thanks for the take
“Floor leader” is definitely the one thing we sorely lack. Someone to tell the offense what to do and stick by it every possession. And maybe he can even keep up his flukey 3P% this year (46%!!). As far as I can tell he gets to the foul line pretty decently also. Can he finish at the hoop?
by atthehive on Dec 10, 2008 1:16 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
He's not a great finisher
But he sure does lay his body on the line when taking it to the basket. Dude has probably taken more spills than DWade and Iverson combined. (OK, that’s the hype, but he sure does go down a lot and is a solid FT shooter)

Yeah but...
… as long as he knows how and when to pass, I’m golden. Pargo and James were only good at passing if you consider the rim to be a sixth man

Something to ponder...
Career AST/TO Ratios:
Chris Paul: 3.86
Antonio Daniels: 3.21
Mike James: 2.36

AD has always been good at AST/TO
He led the league a few years ago. Good decision make/pretty efficient.

Winners all around
Memphis cuts salaries and pick back, Hornets get a role player to fill out the 12 minutes CP3 isn’t playing and gets rid of a team cancer, Wizards basically traded a 2nd round pick(Navarro) for a first round young point guard, and as bad as Mike James may be, he certainly can’t shoot worse than Deshawn Stevenson. – A Wizards Fan.

Some more Daniels stuff
2007-08 season: He’s not a good shooter, and he’s not really a point guard, and he’s 33 … yet Daniels keeps finding ways to produce, and his ability to fill in when Gilbert Arenas went down helped salvage the Wizards’ season.
Once again, his knack for drawing the fouls was the key. Daniels ranked third among point guards in free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt, and even in an off year he hit 77.6 percent from the line. That helped him to a respectable TS% despite making only 17 3-pointers all season.
Daniels also did a halfway decent job running the point, ranking 17th in pure point ratio and exhibiting his usual ability to avoid turnovers despite getting most of his points off penetration. The one drawback was that he took a serious back seat in the offense — only five point guards had a lower usage rate, so Daniels pretty much had to be efficient with the possessions he used to be of much use.
Scouting report: Daniels is one of the league’s smarter players, as reflected in his ability to get to the line without turning the ball over. He’s a natural combo guard who’s better playing off the ball and taking advantage of holes in the defense to slice to the rim; he’s not as comfortable breaking defenses down from up top. When he drives, he likes to tuck the ball away like a running back at the goal line to keep it away from prying hands.
Defensively, he takes charges — leading the team with 23 offensive fouls drawn — but otherwise wasn’t particularly notable except, again, for his lack of mistakes. Daniels averaged just 1.47 fouls per 40 minutes, the third-lowest rate in the league. He’s big enough to play most 2s and quick enough to play most 1s, but at the extremes of height and quickness he’s exposed as a tweener.
The key will be his injuries. He’s recently had knee, wrist, and as mentioned, lower back issues. I’m hoping that since the Hornets need only 10-20 minutes from him, he’ll be able to stay relatively healthy the rest of the year.
I'm no commie, but the Reds shall be the best again!

The 17th in pure point ratio is also reassuring (15th actually depending on which stat site you consult)
The low fouling defense fits right in with our defensive schemes. The charge taking is something we’ve been doing a lot more of this year (esp. with the addition of Posey). All in all, seems like he could be a great fit.

i hope i’m alive to tell my future kids the reason why our hornets have two second round picks is because we got rid of this chucker/ reality show-super nanny guy who wasn’t playing. lol
seriously, i wish mike james luck with his new career in the d.c. area.
