Game 24: Hive Live

1833f7ad-c97b-49f8-992a-0a8e180eef58_medium

Los Angeles Lakers 100 (15-9)  |  New Orleans 87 (16-8)

It was a heartbreaker. A step forward perhaps, but a heartbreaker all the same. After holding pace with the Lake Show for the first twelve minutes, the Hornets collapsed into a funk of poor shooting and fouling that wound up costing us a close game.

Our biggest problem of the evening was by far and away our percentages from the floor. Peja might have helped us there, but for the most part everyone looked a little off. CP was passing through double screens to a wide open D.West all night, but David only finished with 13 points on 5 of 15 from the floor. Meanwhile, Chris himself looked slightly offbeat, dropping only 6 of his 16 shots. That routine move where he finds his way into the lane and drops in a beautiful floater? That shot clanked on the back iron all night long.

It was miserable. Mostly because, as a team, the Hornets out-rebounded, out-assisted, and out-stole the Lakers (and they tied them in blocks). We had the hustle stats in our favor, but the 41% from the field, the 32% from deep, and the 63% from the charity stripe (on 22 shots no less) was absolutely killer. We beat their defense; we just couldn't make the shots fall, particularly at the line.

Give credit to the bench tonight, though. They took a stand and refused to back down. And by bench, I'm really just referring to Hilton, Posey, and Mo as Byron only used 8 players tonight (JuJu got two minutes of garbage time at the end of the second, but who cares).Mo was particularly good tonight with 16 points, 3 boards, and an assist after only 19 minutes of play. Hornets Hype is already calling for his reinstatment in the starting five. After tonight, I think I'm on board, too.

Star-divide

Before I write off this game as a complete squandered opportunity due to our poor shooting, I would like to take the time to address the very questionable officiating that occurred for most of the night. As I've noted in the past, there are stretches of games in which the officials appear to be favoring a particular team or player; however, it usually works out to be pretty even by the end of the game.

Tonight, that was less the case. Consider this: Kobe attempted 15 free throws, which is more than double his season average. The Lakers made more free throws than the Hornets attempted (28-32 vs. 14-22). Now, on a stat sheet, this probably doesn't look too crazy, but the game tells a different story.

First there's the story of fouls that were called. Kobe seemed to draw fouls at will. It was like the officials were calling fouls on the nearest Hornet every time he touched the ball. Unreal.

For those of you who are calling SHENANIGANS! on me right now because of Chris Paul's ever increasing ability to draw fouls, please hold judgment. When Chris does this, he draws contact in a perfectly legal way. Sure, the way he does it is kind of dirty, and I'm sure it drives opposing teams nuts, but the truth of the matter is that he can draw contact and then sell the reaction. Every team (or at least most teams) has a guy that can do this. And he often is the star of the team, and therefore he gets more free throws. Kobe is that guy for the Lakers (though, like the Spurs, it seems like everyone else on their team has at least minored in this course).

But tonight, Kobe didn't have to be that guy. Why? Because he wasn't drawing contact. I can think of three separate instances in which the replays showed no contact from any Hornet (let alone the one called for the foul). It was infuriating.

The other side of the coin was the plethora of over-the-backs and pushing-offs that the officials seemed to ignore from Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol (Bynum was much cleaner on defense). You know what... I don't even want to talk about this anymore... let's move on.

*** But Wait! atthehive has hijacked Lee's post!!!! Will wonders never cease!?!? ***

Lakers_medium

Check out the factors above. We played to pretty much a draw at shooting, rebounding, and turnovers. Free throws were the deciding factor. L.A. more than doubled our free throw rate.

The reason I bring that up is this: normally, the team that wins the FT/FG battle is the one that aggressively drives to the hoop. It's the the team that "puts the onus on the ref to make the call" as Reggie Miller would say. In this game, the Lakers attempted 17 shots "near" the hoop (defined as 3 feet or nearer). The Hornets? We attempted 23. Make of that what you will. We attempted 6 more of those close shots, and yet got to the stripe half as often? It's interesting. I won't say more than that. mW has a PG-13 extrapolation of this over at Hornets Hype if you are interested.

*** This hijack brought to you by  Toyotathon 2009! Drop by your local Toyota dealer today!!!! ***

Bottom line: the Hornets played a very physical game with lots of aggression (and technical fouls). If a few more shots had dropped, we'd have stood a fighting chance to win. But, until next time, Byron's probably going to have them shooting free-throws at practice until their arms give out.

Merry Christmas, everyone. Here's to a better showing at Orlando!

***
Couple of observations before I leave you:

  • Hilton was very aggressive tonight. It wasn't constant throughout the game, but it was there most of the night. He had no problem tying up whichever Laker big man was on the floor for a rebound, and he had a nasty block on Lamar Odom. Dunk rejections are the coolest. Great, now I sound like I'm 5.
  • While Kobe is busy breathing on people and getting free-throws, I don't want to forget about Pau Gasol and Derek Fisher. Have their ever been two players who draw more soft fouls than these guys? It was infuriating to watch Pau get and-ones all night on ticky-tacky fouls in the lane. It's bad enough that he wasn't flagged once until late in the second. Oof.
  • Speaking of Fisher, I've got to hand it to him on offense tonight. He sunk a few crazy, contested treys with time running out on the shot clock to pretty much ice the game (ok, it was a little early to call it "icing," but it killed the crowd and the momentum at the right times).
  • Speaking of momentum, it seemed like every time the Hornets would build a semblance of rhythm, we'd call a timeout or some kind of foul would be called. This wouldn't have been quite so devastating had the antics that ensued in the interim not totally sucked the crowd's attention away from what they came to see in the first place: BASKETBALL. I ranted about this last time we played the Lakers, so please take not Hornets' programmers: when we are losing and trying desperately to make a comeback we DO NOT CARE about Capital One giveaways or some fake computer animated boats racing for a free appetizer that I won't get to eat anyway. PLAY SOME HIGHLIGHTS! GET US EXCITED! KEEP US IN THE GAME! Or, as Curry suggested, play some footage of cheap shots on us by other teams. Get us riled up. I love Posey and all, but WE CAN BE THE SIXTH MAN. Too bad we're too preoccupied with plugging our sponsors.
  • Bobby Jindal showed up at the beginning of the game. He gave a short speech about supporting your local teams and supporting your state, and the Hornets ownership thanked him by giving him a personalized jersey... from last year. Guess George Shin is starting to feel the sting of this recession. I mean, I hope so. Otherwise, I think it's just plain rude to give the governor of your state an outdated uni.
  • Oh, and the streak is still alive at 107. Actually CP racked up 5 steals in the first seven (7!) minutes of the game, but only managed one more before the end of regulation.
  • If you're still down about tonight's loss, check out Hornets Hype and all the new domains they've registered. If that stuff doesn't make you laugh then you might be beyond my help.

Haha

Sorry bout that Lee. I had that blurb up a little before you published and I might as well mash ’em together.

Tough loss tonight. First “bad” Pose game of the year, West waaaay off, etc, etc. Oh well, let’s go out and beat the Magic on Christmas.

That was awesome...

And hilarious. TOYOTATHON! You should do that way more often.

Yeah.

Pose’s game woulda been much better if he’d laid out Kobe in the FIRST half. I agree.

Yeah, You right!

I couldn’t agree more about the officiating.

I am someone who never complains about bad calls. They even out. Period.

But I couldn’t believe what I was seeing last night. The fact that the game was on national TV and that the Lakers are trying out for the mantle of “America’s Team” had to be a factor. Kobe is now playing by the Jordan Rules, one of which, apparently, is that if he misses a shot he was fouled by the nearest opponent.

That having been said, I think another factor is that the Lakers were taking advantage of their size. They basically had two centers on the floor at all times and one of them was guarding West, who couldn’t handle it. We need to draft or trade for a big, somebody who can move people around in the post.

+10000000000000000

Size, nailed it. Like I said in the game thread (or maybe I dreamed it) Gasol/Bynum/Odom are a far bigger problem than Kobe. We can only put Chandler on one of Gasol or Bynum and we can’t reasonably expect West to guard the other 7 footer. Likewise, there’s nobody on the bench that can guard Odom’s size and ball-handling. How many times did he just walk to the hoop tonight? Finally, throw in Phil Jackson’s brilliant idea to have Gasol or Bynum on the floor at all times, and that forces the defense to account for at LEAST two 7-footers on the floor at all time, sometimes 3.

You called our Hype tirade PG-13?

Sweet. Lucky us. But I think fouls aside, Gasol was unstoppable. With Kobe and Bynum out early because of foul trouble, Gasol kept them going. I still can’t figure out how we were losing after one. That’s when we needed to make a run. Think about it: 2 of the Lake-show’e stars on the bench with fouls and CP with 5 steals. If that was a prediction of the future, who wouldn’t be giddy about that? Somehow they held on and we never recovered from not blowing them out. Weird to say, but I think true.

Yeah, KD said sometihng real similar on BDL. Basically that if we couldn’t jump out early, this game wouldn’t end well. And whaddayouknow…

I usually hate conspiracy theories

But it’s hard not to endorse them when phantom fouls give the lakers a marquee win that “puts them back on track”…right in the nick of time for the NBA’s highly hyped game on Christmas against the Celtics.

Coincidence? I think not.

I'm proud of my damn strong football team. Have a great day!

I would also like to add ...

…that David Stern cancelled my flight this morning in a brilliant stroke of ironical genius; the $€*tter was broke. Touché, Mr. Stern. Touché.

it'll be interesting to see the rotations on christmas

will byron keep being stubborn? or will he finally adjust!

Technically

I don’t care whether Mo or Rasual starts. I would like to clarify my position. In fact, Mo has had three 16 pt outings off the bench (ATL, SA, LA, I think) and seems to get more movement going from there. I just don’t want Brown playing minutes IN LIEU of Peterson. I don’t want to SEE Brown until Posey and Peterson have already checked into the game. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Mo actually knows how to move without the ball. As opposed to Devin, who kinda stands out at the three point line waiting to get the ball. Sometimes it seems like he WANTS the play to break down just so he can get the ball with 5 seconds left and chuck it up wildly.

by atthehive on Dec 24, 2008 2:25 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

its not just that devin brick shots

its that he brick wide open shots which is like a double negative, at the same time shooting 21%. at least if he had a hand in his face, that would be understandable. i’ll rather see juju take those shots than him. devin is struggling offensively. he get rebounds but is a liability as of late on the other side of the ball. he is suppose to be a slasher, but the problem is he usually lays the ball off opposing big men hands or throw up wild shots over and under the rim. ugh! help me please if peja isn’t ready to go on thursday and devin get the nod again. i guess i’ll know that santa really doesn’t exist because all i want for christmas is mopete to start if peja doesn’t!
