How'd He Do?: Tyson Chandler

One of Tyson Chandler's goals from the offseason was to lead the league in rebounding. He ended up 3rd, but did accomplish the next best thing- leading the league in offensive rebounding.

Fan_medium

Now that basketball season is over, Tyson looks to spend more time doing what he loves. Namely, repairing ceiling fans.

Positives: Led the league in offensive rebounding, made terrific strides in his free throw percentage mid-season, decreased his Fouls/Minute figures, continued the amazing reduction in TOV% since coming from Chicago (cut from 25% to 18% last year, down to 15% this year), was probably the most important defender on the court for the Hornets, didn't block too many shots but certainly altered them, his anchoring of the paint allowed CP to cheat into the passing lanes to pick up important steals, continued excellent durability, 17.5 PER third in NBA among Centers, executed pick and roll very efficiently, ran the break better than any other big man in the league, alley-oop machine

Negatives: Still no real back-to-basket game, despite good rebound rates, his ORB%, DRB%, and TRB% actually decreased from last year, BLK% declined significantly, tendency to get too emotionally invested in games and pick up cheap foul calls

My Grade: 5, Explanation: Sure, the numbers say his rebounding stats declined. But it's important to note the context. New Orleans has no great rebounders around Chandler. Couple that with the fact that he led the league in ORB, and you knew coming in that opposing teams would key in on him. Teams often doubled him on the boards. So Tyson keeping his numbers relatively similar is actually an accomplishment, not a regression. He adjusted to the double teams and not always having position by batting out a lot of basketballs.

Offensively, he still has a lot to work on. That said, he has great hands, great anticipation and basketball IQ, and he understands floor spacing. Even if he never develops a great back-to-basket game, his pick and roll ability makes him an invaluable asset.

Tyson

Like everyone else I would love if Tyson could develop a bac kto the basket game, but he is just so amazing at everything else that it is tough to complain to hard. Tyson, is possibly the second best pick and roll defender in the league next to Garnet. His offensive rebounding prowess is crucial, and it is especially important in close games against good competition. He runs the floor like a gazelle, and his defensive proficiency one on one and in team defensive is really underrated. I think he should be considered one of the top 3 or 4 defensive centers in the game. He really makes up for the defensive short comings of his teammates. People don’t refer to him as such, but Tyson his really a smart player, and he is the linchpin of one of the best defnesive teams in the league. Lastly, his offensive production, though small is incredibly efficient and his alley oops are not only fun but emotionally draining to opponents. Remember the G.S. game where he brought the ball back and slammed it and then just stared at the croqd. It ended the game before the clock struck zero.

I also wanted to make a point about the blocks. If you check his block numbers per 40 minutes, you’ll notice that they have gone down at about the same rate as his fouls. I think he has given up on being aggressive in shot blocking in order to keep from picking up needless fouls. Its a samrt move.

You make some terrific points

Especially about the blocks. He’s content to challenge shots without necessarily going up all the way and risking picking up cheap fouls. I think it’s pretty funny how Lakers fans always say Pau Gasol is so good at running the floor on fast breaks. Tyson seriously looks like a 6 foot guard or something the way he gets up and down the court. The biggest thing about his defense is how much he makes everyone else on the floor better. It’s a cliche, but it’s true. CP can gamble for steals, and Peja/Mo-Pete can be much more relaxed playing one-on-one D because they know Tyson has their back if necessary.

And the G.S. game… easily one of the funnest of the year! NBA.com highlights. I think that Tyson alley-oop is the best dunk he had all year. Welcome to the site, jd!

In his 22/22 game

With the staredown! Easily the best Tyson moment of the season.

Lol

I made a gif of the dunk and the staredown some time in January. I’ll see if I can dig ‘em up. The way he walks off the court swaggering is the best part of it all

The Move

TC has this move, where he cuts across the lane and takes a hook shot. He’s so fast and tall that’s impossible to stop. Only he misses it consistently. Imagine if he worked on that all summer?

Yup

I know exactly what you’re talking about. Usually, the defender is in no position whatsoever to defend it and Tyson still inexplicably fades away as he shoots it.

He could be the next Hakeem for all we know!!

We actually

saw that shot a lot more in the beginning of the season, and then it looked like he stopped attempting it.

Scary that he's still developing

He’s been in the Association for 7 years now, and he’s barely 26. He still hasn’t hit his prime yet. He can still get better.
