Hornets on the Internets: The Return of J.R. Smith? Edition
J.R. Smith back to the Hornets? Hoopsworld reported it first. I dismissed it myself before I talked to someone who confirmed it. An excerpt of HW's article:
[J.R.'s] turnaround has reportedly caught the attention of the Smith's former team, the New Orleans Hornets, although they already acquired reserve swingman James Posey this summer. Oklahoma City could also be in the mix for Smith, but the Nuggets still have a hold on his rights.
I know, I know. Nobody likes J.R. But take a step back before letting the hate flow forth. The man has improved his 3P% and eFG% substantially for three straight years. That's hard work and nothing else, something we didn't see during his New Orleans years. Smith at 2/3, Wright at 3, and Posey at 3/4? That'd be a terrific look for our bench. By the way, if it happens, it'll be a S&T (probably M. James and a '10 first rounder).
Sort of Hornets-related, if you squint and turn your head sideways: Knicks trade Renaldo Balkman.
The Denver Nuggets have acquired forward Renaldo Balkman from the New York Knicks in exchange for guard Taurean Green, forward Bobby Jones and a second-round draft pick in 2010.
The Knicks are expected to waive Green and Jones at a savings of about $2 million. Both players have non-guaranteed contracts.
The thing I'm looking at is Bobby Jones. He was purported to be a defensive stopper of Bruce Bowen's caliber when he was drafted. A smart move might be signing him at the minimum to fill out the roster. 3436384279
A Boston Celtic fan gives his take on James Posey's departure to the Hornets. He finds himself wondering why Posey hasn't been vilified like other Boston sports heroes that bolted for big money (Johnny Damon):
It's taken me thirty years to realize this, but sometimes a player can leave a team and there are no bad guys.
Would I have liked to see James Posey on the 2008-09 Celtics? Absolutely. But I'm happy for him that he was able to get the contract he wanted.
I'm happy that he'll get to play with a great player like CP3. I'm even happy for the city of New Orleans, who just got themselves one heck of a clutch basketball player.
Julian Wright and Hilton Armstrong's Vegas summer league play made Byron Scott... happy? Yes, indeed. The Times-Pic reports. Also, in that article Jeff Bower talks about Bobby Brown:
"Bobby did a real good job throughout the whole league, and obviously all the other teams took notice," Bower said. "He was one of the biggest surprises throughout the summer league with his play. We had a chance to measure him against the other notable rookies, which was a good measuring stick for him. We were real happy he was able to come in there and perform well."
Still wish we could've nabbed him.
This link session started with one flashy former Hornet SG/SF, so it's only right it ends with another (albeit not as flashy). Devin Brown could end up back in New Orleans according to Hoopsworld:
Among the teams showing interest in former Cavs guard Devin Brown are Dallas, New Orleans, Denver and Atlanta. To a lesser extent, both Miami and Washington have made contact with Brown's representatives.
I enjoyed Devin's last stop in New Orleans- when he averaged career highs in points, rebounds, assists, and steals- and wouldn't mind him back.
[UPDATE: by atthehive]: I forgot to mention that Denver signed swingman Dahntay Jones to a contract last week. Here's one opinion of why Jones makes J.R. expendable in Denver.

Nuggets Fan Here
I can only speak for myself, but I have a hard time believing that the Nugs let JR go. They know that no one can offer him more than the MLE except for Memphis (and they aren’t spending money at all), so we’re just holding back and waiting instead of bidding against ourselves. From what I hear, our front office has a serious love for JR and will not let him go. The only person that isn’t a fan of JR is Karl and I honestly believe the front office would let Karl go before JR. They view JR as a potential all-star talent.
BTW, you guys are going to love Posey. He was great to watch while here in Denver and he’s only gotten better.

Yeah...
I always felt like Denver loved the kid. And Mike James (not even an EC) and a 1st rounder (2010 at the earliest) doesn’t make too much sense for you guys unless in full rebuilding mode. I’d be thrilled if it happened, but I’m with you here. Hard time believing Nugs let JR leave, he’s definitely a potential All-Star if he ever gets it together.
Re: Posey, I hope he can perform at his current level for at least another 2-3 years. That 4th year still scares me though…

Fourth Year
is definitley a risk, but it’s a risk you have to take IMO. If I’ve learned one thing as a Nuggets fan, it’s that if you’re close you have to go for the brass ring provided you don’t give up TOO much. When you’re paying him $8 mil that fourth year, you won’t care if you have a Western Conference Championship or World Championship banner hanging in the arena from the year or two before (which I think you will).
BTW, I didn’t mention this earlier but should have. I’m one of Bobby Jones’ biggest fans. If you can get him for the minimum (which you should be able to), he’s worth it. I was REALLY hoping he would step up this summer so we could start him at the 2 and keep JR in the Ginobili role off of the bench. Unfortunately, he struggled in summer league and Dahntay Jones vastly outplayed him.

Agree about
the risk we had to take. Without the 4th year, I’m pretty sure that Posey goes back to Boston. Then 4 years down the road, we would look back and wonder what would’ve been with a top flight defender.
Re: B. Jones, hahaha, I’ve been looking for a Nuggets/Sixers blogger/fan to talk to about Jones for a really long time now. I had my eye on him right when the season ended. I’ve heard he’s supposed to be an awesome man defender, but I’ve never actually seen him play before. What’s he good at? Would it be pointless to get him now that we already got Posey?

I wouldn't say pointless
Because IMO you can never have enough lock-down defenders (yes, I realize the irony of the team I cheer for - don’t make me bust out the numbers). I always saw him as a Bruce Bowen type. Not as dirty, not quite as good of a defender, and the shot’s not there yet. That said, I was impressed with a few games I saw him play. Intelligent and strong. Probably a better post defender than perimeter. As for offensively, it’s a limited sample size, but if you check out his hot spots chart (which I just realized I can’t link to directly - he’s still listed under the Nugs as of this writing) you’ll see his three point shooting is pretty blue. He prefers the corners and the right side. He’s a slasher.
Honestly, I’d recommend any team sign him. He’s one of the low cost/high potential players out there that’s worth the chance. If you sign him to the minimum, worst case scenario he’s a solid practice guy who won’t bitch. Best case – you get Bruce Bowen. He has a lot to work on though, but he’s a gym rat. Like I said, I was really hoping that he would put it all together this summer league, but it just didn’t click for him.

Yeah, I remember looking up his Hot Spots as soon as I heard all the Bowen comparisons. But even if the Hornets brought him in, I’m sure a slasher offensively would be fine. With Posey and (presumably) Pargo, the bench should have enough shooting ability.
I really like the “gym rat” thing you mention. Guys like him might not contribute too much on the court itself but they can push the other stars on the team to work hard during practice and improve their own games. The only thing I don’t understand is how he’s managed to get to SO many different teams in such little time. I mean, when San Antonio lets him go even though half their team is about to retire…

Good stuff as always, sir
I know you guys don’t get as much activity as some of the other blogs, but nevertheless, your posts are definitely worthwhile and an interesting read. Good stuff. I’m sorry my Blazers will have to take you guys down this year. :-)

Thanks prezofdeath :)
I hope the traffic to @tH picks up once the season starts… and I hope the Hornets and Blazers can build up a nice little rivalry. Unfortunately, you guys had the upper hand on us last year even without Oden and Bayless, haha.

Posey might help your team just a little bit this year...
As for the pick you sold us that turned into Nicolas Batum, two things have been accomplished…
1) We now have a guy warming our bench who is at least 2-3 years out from being a solid contributor.
2) The women of BlazersEdge have gone crazy with lust. We are now laden with comments such as these.
Thanks, New Orleans…
