Game 34: Hive Live
New York 101 (14-22) | New Orleans 95 (22-12)
Well... that could have gone better.
I'll be honest with you: I didn't see the whole game. I was late to the show due to some overly long meeting. Regardless, the 18 minutes that I did see told me most of what I needed to know about this loss.
Byron doesn't know how to adjust. There's a lot to be said for imposing your style of play on your opponent and making them play out of their comfort zone, but if that doesn't work, then you're just being stubborn to keep trying a failed strategy. The Knicks ran the exact same pick-and-roll and backdoor cut all night long. And they worked. Every time. Really, they only needed 2 plays to beat us.
Why did those plays keep working? We never adjusted. We doubled Quentin Richardson every time he went into the lane. And guess what? He found David Lee open every time. Richardson finished with 8 assists and Lee with 24 points. All because we bit every time. I've never seen so many uncontested dunks from an opposing team.
David launched 20 shots and sank 6. His gaudy stat total (25,14,5) was a result of a 13 for 14 performance at the charity stripe. Nothing to sneeze at of course, but you've got to wish some of those other shots had dropped.
We were slow on defense. Maybe they just made us look slow. I just know that there were several times when Wilson Chandler or Chris Duhon would blow by their defender and no one would rotate to help out (David was especially guilty of this). Never mind that our rotation was abysmal for most of the night.
So, I'm already tired of talking about this game. We played poorly and showed up too late (an interesting theme for this year as whole).
Really I'm just bummed because I finally got my D.West jersey from my brother (a delayed Christmas present) and then had to sit and watch my main man, the one I chose to live vicariously through a piece of screen printed polyester, take several defensive series off.
It sucks even more when you consider that the score is within three in the final minute. It was anybody's game. But then the Knicks came out of a timeout, we failed to rotate, and Al Harrington iced the game with a mostly open trey.
A little aggression could go a long way. Oh, and a little adaptation. That might help.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me 847 times in a row, then the Knicks are probably walking all over the both of us.

Since I only saw 18 minutes of the game, I pretty much out of observations to share with you after the above mini-rant. Please feel free to add your own observations in the comment section.

"Fool me 847 times in a row"....
Amen to that.
On a side note, I HATED that Byron benched Chandler from around 6:00 left in the 4th quarter for the rest of the game. How many stupid loose balls could we not corral when he was gone? I guarantee, he gets every single one of those. Every single one of those would have been gotten. Tyson was on tonight. I realize Byron wanted some 3 pt. shooting… but isn’t Posey/Peja/Butler major overkill??

I think
that was dumb as well. Their tallest guy out there was 610 with no hops. Cmon! I know Tyson wasn’t having the best rebounding game (even with 14 boards he was missing the important ones) but that one sequence when Lee was basically over Posey’s back and the Knicks came up with the ball was crucial. But you know what had they come out and played like they wanted to win they wouldn’t have been in that position. I dont care if NY is a pro team. they are not that good. Hornets just dont play hard.

Yeah, two thoughts.
One, I hate small ball. If they go small, go big, especially considering Chandler/Armstrong can run well. Anyone remember Armstrong destroying (was it Indiana) down low when they had foul trouble and put someone small on him? Why not do that by design. Ugh.
Two. Not sure if it came out on TV, but there were three or four horrible calls late in the game, which literally brought me jumping off my feet and screaming; so was the rest of the Arena. It was like the refs decided that we played so horrible all game that we didn’t deserve to win and they weren’t going to let us. Hard to say that even if that was true (which I honestly doubt) it would be unfair.
Disappointing performance.

Saw those...
There was the CP charge that was clearly a Harrington flop. There the was the David West over-the-back foul on David Lee… which was interesting since West was in front of Lee. Then there was the no-call for David Lee’s over-the-back in which he knocked down at least one of our players.
As frustrating as those calls were, I wouldn’t even dream of laying the blame for this loss on anyone but the Bees. Too many missed opportunities.
Plus, CP got away with a crazy travel late in the fourth that led to an assisted Rasual trey.

I hate to say it...
But — without a big trade — there is no way the Hornets are making the Finals this year. In all honesty, we’ll be lucky to get to the WCF. We rely far too much on midrange and perimeter shooting. When the shots aren’t falling, our guys just pass around the floor until the shot clock is running out and then watch West/Paul/Butler/Peja throw up some desperation heave.
Other teams are defending the Crescent City Connection much better… and Tyson isn’t hitting his rebounding numbers of last year (or the year prior), so his offensive contributions are extremely limited. His free throw percentage has risen considerably this month (11/15 or 73.3%), but his only post move (a fadeaway hook shot) rarely gets him to the line.
We have exactly two players that can create their own offense: Chris Paul and David West. After that it’s catch-and-shoot, lob-and-dunk, or put backs. Rasual Butler has become our bonafide third option, and he’s doing a decent job of it. But he should be a fifth best starter, at most. Not our main threat from deep. Special thanks to Peja for losing his shot at various points this season: most recently seen somewhere in Denver.
I know this is a really pessimistic post, and I’m sorry. But after losses like this to the Knicks, the Kings, and the Bobcats… I just don’t know what to think about this team. I’m starting to believe we had a better chance of going all the way last season. And it really sucks to type that out.

I propose a trade
Ju-Ju, Mo,cash, and their suits for Marks, Brown, their uniforms, and their minutes. You’d see a huge impact there.

you know thats not a bad idea
even though mo was in with the bench last night he wasnt very effective. he needs one big performance of the bench in a big game to knock some sense into Mr. Coach of the Month. but more disappointing is that we dont even give ju-ju a chance to have a good game by not even dressing him

yes, but...
HOW CAN HE HAVE A BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE WHEN BYRON ONLY PLAYS HIM FOR 3 MINUTES?!
(sorry, wasn’t yelling at you… just trying to type loud enough so Byron or Bower can hear me).

I accept!
Jeff Bower, please make this happen.

i agree with atthehive completely
benching tyson was probably the dumbest thing byron’s done all year. he was a beast on the offensive boards yesterday with 9 OFFENSIVE so byron takes him out. we need to realize that help defense is very important
