Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Game 36: Hive Five

Another nationally televised game, another embarassing blowout. Hey, at least we're consistent!

373b88e9-5769-4654-a782-ab538996e2f9_medium

D. Brown attempts a pass. Now replace "attempts" with "bricks" and "pass" with "layup."

It's tough to assign blame in basketball games. Losses- especially blowouts- are seldom due to one or two people. Tonight, I don't know that's the case. Tyson Chandler played quite possibly his worst defensive game as a Hornets. Including games he played injured, I've never seen him play as bad defensively. It took midway through the third quarter for him to even attempt a shot contest. It's not like he didn't have opportunities; the Cavs were barrelling through the lane at will. His lack of D killed us tonight. More blame mongering after the jump...

Other than Chandler, I'm looking at Byron Scott's defensive strategy. He came into the game looking to double LeBron aggressively. That strategy has worked well in the past and certainly can't be faulted. The thing is, LBJ came out looking to pass on every play. CLE got going from the three point line, with Szczerbiak, Gibson, and Pavlovic on fire from deep. At that point, New Orleans should have switched it up a little bit. We had Posey to guard LeBron, and he was doing a good job. What's the point of having Posey out there and still doubling? There were a couple plays where Posey was yelling at guys (West and Butler were the ones I remember) and telling them not to help. Good thing they never listened. To quote chandlerfan6 from the game thread: "LET POSEY GO ONE ON ONE WITH LEBRON. HOLY CRAP HES ONE OF THE BEST DEFENDERS IN THE LEAGUE." Exactly.

That brings us to.... who else? Devin Brown. Byron Scott: Why? Why? What the hell does he offer this team over Morris Peterson? No, seriously, tell me one thing he can do better. One thing. Rebounding? Mo. Turnovers? Mo. Defense? Probably Mo, but let's say tie. Shooting? Uhhh. Yeah.

On to the factors: contrary to what ABC's absolutely imbecilic announcing crew may have told you, we actually did a decent job on the boards. We held CLE to a low offensive rebound rate, and while a few more offensive boards could've helped us, there were quite a few unlucky bounces. Most of the damage came from the Cavaliers' terrific defense. Cleveland pressured the ball really well, and the help defense made up for the times they overplayed the ball. If the Cavs can keep up this level of defensive intensity till year's end, I'd definitely have to pick them over the Celtics. More than anything, the players understand their roles on D. The most impressive thing- this team never ball watches. Nobody's following the ball around with their eyes, something Chris Paul and David West are guilty of multiple times a game. To sum, I really like this team. I'd be surprised if they don't make the Finals this year.

Some bullets to clean up:

  • I hated the LeBron/Paul slant the commentators took. They basically made CP sound like a little, bitter kid and LeBron seem like this awesome dude that Paul looked up to in awe. It started off with the way they talked about the bowling tournament, then evolved into talk about their games. I eventually ended up putting those guys on mute.
  • Chris Paul absolutely could not shoot tonight. You pretty much know whether Chris Paul can shoot that night, based off his first jumper. He simply looked scared out there; on at least six occasions, he passed up totally wide open threes.
  • Peja shot the ball well tonight. On top of that, he made a really nice drive to the hoop in the fourth quarter to complete a three point play. He's shooting well, he's moving fluidly, and he looks to be back. So there's at least one positive we can take away from this game...
  • Posey and Paul got thrown out of the game. Paul, I'm fine with. I'm kind of getting tired with Posey's techs though. They're pure frustration, and he seems to get one every single loss. Seriously, suck it up and stop jawing once in a while. His second tech was total nonsense, but his first one was just stupid. This whole team in general needs to stop complaining. The Hornets have gained a solid reputation by now as some of the biggest whiners in the league, and it's well warranted. They seriously turn into a bunch of cry-babies when the odds are against them.
  • Staying on that subject, the Cleveland PA system played the Paul "wooo" sound every time Paul got a turnover, foul, or whatever. I know a lot of you guys hated it, but overall, I found it pretty clever. Obviously, I didn't like it as a Hornet fan... but that's a cool little thing by Cleveland. They did the research on what Paul gets from his homecourt PA system and decided to flip it around a little bit. Any time you can get in the head of your opponent without violating any rules, it's worth it. So yeah, props to the Cavs for thinking that up.
  • LeBron travel count: 4. Four blatant, three/four step walks he got away with. He did get whistled for one crab dribble, but the whistles went mysteriously silent after that.
  • I'll end with a random observation I meant to point out after the Dallas game: Hilton's minutes have been getting slowly phased out. He had just 5 minutes tonight, after 4 minutes at Dallas and 5 minutes versus New York. It strikes me as a little odd, given how low-energy Tyson was. Is this the sign of something on the horizon? I really, really hope so. A Hilton and Mo/JuJu package has to return something decent, right? Hey, front office? Just to let you know... this works. So does this

Well, that's that. Detroit is up next, and they just lost to OKC. We just lost to New York, so I guess we're even. Good thing we showed the nation just how awesome we are!

In a wonderful piece of irony

I was saying to mW that Posey laughs at calls instead of looking like he’s gonna blow up and kill someone, and he should get West and Chandler on board with that… he proceeded to get tossed from the game 2 minutes after I said it.

I guess proving that refs don’t take well to sarcasm either.

I can’t deal with how mad I’m getting at Byron Scott’s rotations. Something isn’t working, so he shortens the bench by taking two of our better bench players out of the rotation. It’s getting ludicrous.

Oh and?

This is the last time I dedicate several hours to ANY player, since clearly it causes them to SUCK.

I REALLY don't understand Byron Scott, Mr. Coach of the Month

Seriously why Devin Brown, Sean Marks, and Hilton Armstrong??? They barely deserve to be in the NBA. WAY TOO INCONSISTENT!!!!!! Hilton Armstrong for example; against the Nuggets he looked like he finally turned the corner in his mind and potential but then now he cant box out, he never can rebound, cant make layups, travels consistently. What do you get from that? Devin Brown; I don’t think I can think of one time where he made a smart decision on the court. Today all he had on his mind was driving to put up some kind of bullshit shot over four defenders while we had Posey and Sool- Bop in the corners for three. Yet Byron wants to consistently put him in over Mo Pete. I thought when we got Antonio Daniels that we would be able to get the same type of system we run with CP3. Drive and look to draw the defenders and make the D collapse so you can kick out to an open dead eye shooter. But no he puts AD in there and surrounds him with ONE good shooter, Posey. Those two can’t do it all. Now here’s my ultimate favorite; Sean Marks. What in the mother&#(@#( hell does he bring to the table that Julian Wright is incapable of doing. I’ll tell you NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely freaking nothing. Like someone has said before Byron loves to run the same plays for Marks as he does D-West. This next statement will shock you but D-West is a shooter so why put in a guy who cant shoot to save his life in Marks. Julian Wright is a better shooter than Marks with a blindfold and both hands and feet tied behind his back. Come on Byron open your eyes. Basically to sum it up we need a scorer off the bench and some rebounding along with some good d. Either one of those trades would make us stronger in both areas. If we get Maggette then Sool can go to the bench and boom theres your scorer. If we get Thomas and Noah then they’re both decent scorers (better than Hilton and Marks) but more importantly we get lockdown defenders who play with ALOT of energy, something we suddenly seem to lack. If thats the case then we should activate Bowen, probably the most energenic player in the league to hustle like nobody else can. In the end we should go with a rotation like this; Pg) CP3 Sg) Maggette Sf) Peja Pf) D-West C) TC and back ups of Pg) AD Sg) Sool-Bop Sf) Posey Pf) JuJu C) Ely OR same starters except Razwall instead of Maggette and a bench of Pg) AD Sg) Posey Sf) JuJu Pf) Thomas C) Noah. Please make those trades so we’re not a disgrace to basketball on national TV.

Nice... lots of good stuff

One thing you reminded me of that I forgot to note: Devin Brown played point guard (bringing the ball up, initiating) even though Antonio Daniels was on the floor at the same time. In fact one play, Daniels came to get the ball out of bounds, and Devin waved him off and took it himself. Seriously, what the hell is going on??? Players (bad ones at that) are self appointing themselves into roles and Byron Scott says nothing?

I agree, if we do not see Julian against Detroit, I will be stunned. STUNNED. This team’s biggest problem is energy. Everyone in the entire universe knows this. If MARK JACKSON knows it, that tells you all you need to know. Julian Wright is the most energetic man in Louisiana, perhaps the United States. How is Byron missing this? He says they’re “Scared” of what Julian brings… well you know what? I’m scared of being blown out by every single good opponent we ever play. That’s what I’m scared of.

Exactly

Really what do we have to lose? Worst case scenario is that JuJu coughs it up a couple of times and is a little hesitant to take bad shots. BIG DEAL! He will never learn at all if he never sees the court. It’s perfectly fine when the failure Devin Brown makes countless retard mistakes but he’s supposed to be an experienced veteran showing JuJu what to do. No he’s probably our worst player. I swear I can probably make smarter decisions on the court on God only knows I can DEFINITELY outshoot him from three. Hell anyone can even Tyson Chandler and Hilton Armstrong. Byron needs to figure out what the hell is really going on.

We are playing low to the ground

We are not jumping to rebounds, layups, or dunks. People and LeBron are jumping over West, Chandler, Posey, Marks, Armstrong, Ely, etc. several times a game for rebounds and put-backs. Tyson can elevate for an oop, but seems content to wait on the ground for boards. West never seems to jump. JuJu can jump…..

Another game where the refs allowed a lot of grinding and contact. CP3 and Dwest coughed it up too many times as a result. We need to find a way (or two) to deal with that and maybe do the same to other teams. It cost us the San Antonio series, every Utah home game, and several others. Here’s an idea – practice it!

Stat geek question

How many players have had their best night of their life or season shooting threes versus the Hornets the last two years? Pasha and Wally last night, Von Wafer, Derek Fisher, some guy from Detroit last year whose name I can’t even remember, etc. Since normally poor or mediocre shooters seem to light us up often, might there be something we are doing wrong?

by NOEngineer on Jan 17, 2009 6:49 AM CST reply actions

The Detroit player’s (now with the Nets) name is Jarvis Hayes. What did he have that night? 29 points? That was a surreal moment. The minute he hit that second or third shot, he didn’t look like he was going to miss for the rest of the game.

That was a bitterly disappointing display from the Hornets.

I’d love to see Julian Wright get some playing time. He could contribute a lot this team right now.

One last thing

Does anyone remember when we started to turn the corner last year? I do. When JuJu became an important part of the rotation and started playing REALLY well. He gave us that spark, him and Pargo. I hope Pargo comes back to us because if Byron’s not gonna play our hustle guys especially Mr. Hustle Bowen then that’s the only way we’ll play hard ever.

Just a really dissapointing loss overall...

I love this team… but when I see the team come out and play with no heart… and then whine and moan because they are losing… ugh! You deserved to lose that game by 50 points instead of 14! The team has a good record, and has long since rebounded from the mediocre start… they’ve just beat a division rival in a very competitive game and now they have a chance to knock off the Cavs on their own court and be the first ones to do it.. You’d think all this would get them pumped… but there was no energy until desperation set in, and by that time it was too late. This IS a coaching problem… whether Byron thinks it his job to motivate or not, if your guys play with no energy, it is your fault.

I’ve defended Byron Scott a lot… but right now I’m seriously beginning to hate the guy. The rotations make no sense… Mo Pete gets either DNP-CDs or 5 minutes and Julian Wright gets nothing for game after game and then… the last 59 seconds of a nationally telivised humilation game? Why?

The commentators did annoy me too though… except for Van Gundy. Pretty much everything he said was on point… he was slamming Chandler’s listlessness and completely picking apart Byron’s coaching (not directly… as in he didn’t say “this is Byron Scott’s fault,” but it was implied).
