Game 29: Hive Drive

Pryzchandler_medium

Hornets 92, Blazers 77

1) A win over the Blazers isn't exactly the same thing as a win over the Blazers without Brandon Roy, but I'll take it. The W extends the streak to four wins in a row, following a strong 10-3 finish in the month of December. After a lot of word that the Hornets are for some reason "not in sync with their coach", they've once again bounced back up the Western Conference standings. Byron Scott also won Coach of the Month for December (something that surprised me), but today we were once again graced with the mythical Devin Brown DNP-CD, which makes me happy.

2) Of course, the main interest of the game was the Tyson-Prissy "brawl". From what I saw, Pryz threw a forearm into Tyson's 6-pack, causing Tyson to retaliate a bit harder on Pryz's injured wrist. Then for some weird reason, Tyson was given a Flagrant-2 and ejected from the game. Although Tyson did deserve the punishment, I'm quite sure that Pryzbella deserved some justice himself. The Tyson-Prissy fued has been going on for at least the last two years, and this is the third time Tyson has been ejected from the Rose Garden. We'll all be hoping he's not suspended.

Ironically, the ejection gave rise to the Hornet surge of scoring. Said Chris Paul about what happened after the "brawl":

"I think we fed off that energy. We were talking in the huddle and that’s what really hyped the game up. We got excited after that."

The Bees went 13 for19 shooting in the fourth alone, outscoring the Blazers 41-19 in the 15 minutes after the ejection

3) I have to hand it to Hilton in the 23 minutes he played, he went 6-6 with 12 points. Although he only grabbed 3 boards, he was able to actually catch the ball and come up with a couple of really nice dunks. On the other end of the court, he also played some great D on Greg "World War II Veteran" Oden. I'm once again getting impressed with Hilton's play and still have this dream that he will someday become the next Dwight Howard. It was on my Christmas wishlist, but there's always next year, right?

4) David West and CP3 played some great ball (as usual right?). West absolutely tore up LaMarcus, scoring 25 points (12-21 shooting). It seems he's really got it back in the last few games, making his jumpers and getting a goodpost game going. I hardly even noticed Chris "MVP" Paul during the game, until the fourth where he just walked past the Blazers D and scored on a couple of driving layups. Those were the few plays that really delivered the Bees the game and sealed it. He ended up with 17 points, 11 assists, and 7 rebounds. In just 36 minutes.

And that's it for this one. As I said before, a win over the Blazers without Roy is not the same thing as one with him in it. Next game tomorrow against the Nuggets at Denver, hopefully you can stop by the game thread once again. And hopefully Tyson will be playing...

Chandler

practically threw a punch (a forearm shot any way) and smacked Przybilla in his BROKEN wrist. hmm i might be a bit upset if that happened to me too

They both were going at each other.

For people to pretend Pryz is such a victim is BS. It was a scuffle. Pryz got called for a foul. A year ago TC would have gotten nothing. Only on instant reply they went gonzo on him and tossed him. Hard to believe that Przy wouldn’t get his own technical for his role in it too. But one thing I am sure, is that TC was NOT going for his wrist. He was just letting his emotions get the better of him and lashed out. They were being physical all night

More incite on the altercation
Friday’s incident began to pick up steam around the seven-minute mark of the third quarter. The two were banging back and forth — like most centers do — but Przybilla said Chandler kept an incessant whining dialogue going with the referees, who were down a man after Jack Nies was unable to make the game because of an injury.

“I told him he cries more than my 3-year-old son,” Przybilla said. “He got mad.”

On the ensuing possession, Przybilla reached out with his injured left hand and touched the stomach of Chandler. Chandler angrily swatted the hand down.

“I didn’t know he had a bad hand,” Chandler said. “No. Not at all.”

He paused.

“If he is worried about that, he should keep it off people,” Chandler said.

Przybilla sent a quick slap to Chandler’s chest, which caused the Hornets center to throw what Przybilla called a “chicken wing” — a hard forearm that landed high on Przybilla’s chest, just below his throat.

Tyson/Przy

Some people need to watch the game again…

Przybilla was hand checking Tyson on the block, which is not uncommon for a post defender, but for whatever reason TC came down hard to knock his hand away….if Przy doesn’t want to injury his hamd more then keep it off of people….Przy didn’t like it of course, he reacted with his chest blow then Tyson countered. Tyson does have to keep his cool when someone’s talking noise or playing physical (something Tyson doesn’t do but needs to)…but if TC gets ejected then Przy should have too.

Agreed.

And I understand Blazer fans are sensitive, they’re going to stick up for their man, but anyone who watches basketball sees this kind of hand swats ALL THE TIME. A guy puts his hand on the other guy, the other guy swats it away. It is a nothing play. The problem started with Przy hitting TC. Of course, TC retaliated. But typically, the refs toss both guys in the NBA for this kind of a scuffle.

I think it’s a non-issue. Two guys that hate each other got into it. Oh well. Let’s move on.

Of course the hand slap was par for the course...

I even had to scold some of my fellow Blazer fans that all Tyson was doing was knocking Joel’s hand off him, and not trying to “go for his injured wrist” as the always over reactive Blazer play by play man Mike Barrett continued to spout.

However, Joel’s little tap in retaliation to the hand slap was also nothing… Then Chandler exploded like the unhinged, unable to keep himself under control, player he has become known for, and decided to just quit playing and start fighting instead by delivering a unmistakable, ejectable blow.

Now I understand Chandler is a good guy off the court. I’ve seen interviews with him and he seems like a normal dude. But on the court he simply appears to be a whiny, soft, little baby. There are many who would even say he’s just a punk… He doesn’t want anybody to touch him, or try to stop him from getting to his spots. Earth to Tyson, it’s the NBA baby. The paint is no place for soft little kiddies who are afraid of contact. Either get with the program, shut up and play, or hang it up.

You know,

the more I think about it, the more impressed I am by this win. Peja started us off fast with 11 points in the first. DX was lethal; 15 at half, and probably had over 20 after three. He just wasn’t missing many shots, and was killing on his jumpers. The only serious lag we had in the offense, Pose hit two monster threes (going 3-4 over the middle of the game). And then, when we were unsure how the game would end. CP found his scoring touch and exploded in the fourth, while finding Hilton for several easy, but big, baskets. And that’s all without much of a Butler/Mo contribution. When this team is clicking, it has so many ways it can beat you. That’s something all great teams can do.

I know the Blazers didn’t have Roy, but on defense what would he have done, locked down on Butler/Mo? Right. We looked good. And when we click, I think we’re as dangerous as any other team in the League.

The Rivalry

Hey, primarily Blazer fan visiting from Blazers Edge.

I don’t see much (that is, any) of New Orleands outside of our games. But I like watching your team and look forward to these matchups. I knew Chris Paul was good…

… but holy sweet Mary Mother of Jesus is David West good! They say Roy is collected but that guy was draining baskets with all the dispassionate objectivity of Japanese suhi chef. Wow. Very impressive.

Your whole team’s perimeter defense seemed really good to me. Maybe BRoy could’ve made a little more hay from the perimeter but the other guys were absolutely stymied.

I don’t recollect much post play out of your offense. Is that a function of Chandler’s ejection? The Blazers are at least very uncomforable with post play (Oden is kind of clumsy still and LMA does it with great reluctance, despite what you saw out of 20 shots from the guy)… if it ever happens that West starts missing (big if) does the offense start to sputter?

Anyway, thought I’d drop a note to say I’m impressed with your team. Look forward to the next game. Definitely going to what these guys play the L*kers and Utah when those games come up. Cheer like hell for you guys.

PS-for the record, Chandler probably got tossed because of the league’s zero-tolerance stance on fighting. Blow to the face under any circumstances probably means ejection. But I agree, Joel definitely contributed and probably should’ve got a T as well. I’m mildly surprised they didn’t both get ejected. I’m just glad the benches didn’t clear with a whole bunch of ejections. THAT would’ve ruined a game that was otherwise very enjoyable. At least, until the last chunk of the 4th quarter.

Tyson Chandler is a poor sport...

I am not impressed with the crybaby hornets and their unsportsmanlike style of playing. Wow, you guys barely squeaked out a win against the Blazers without their star player…..congratulations! Thank god I’m not a Charlotte Hornets fan because if I had to listen to that Bitch Chris Paul cry and bark at the refs every game and act like he should be getting Michael Jordan calls would make me sick.

ps, Hey Phizbin, Tyson Chandler got tossed because he is a thug and a POS. If you love the Charlotte Hornets so much, then put on one of their ugly jerseys and become a full time scumbag!

Oh the irony

Or, the ignorance. It’s not really that hard to know what team you’re playing. Haha.

Blazer fan here...

And I have no idea who this kiki… fellow is. Never seen him on BEdge. Apologies from all of us! We got beat, and there’s really no excuse for it. The Hornets are the better team. CP3 was ridiculous in the fourth quarter. Everytime he touched the ball, he made gold. We really missed Brandon then, cause nobody else knew how to answer back. Anyway, it was a good game up until the last quarter!

I disagree with all the Prz dissing, obviously. You do see guys swatting hands away like that, and you also see guys responding like Prz did. Prz got called for a foul, which is a good call for what he did. TC then tried to hit him in the face and got ejected, which is the right call. Let’s be reasonable here…there’s no excuse for going for the face like that. Prz fouled him, but it was in the flow of the game. TC stopped playing basketball and started a fight. There’s a huge difference. Anyway, cheers!

Good game. Good rivalry.

One of the great things about the blog communities is the level of connectivity it gives us all. So it’s great when fans of the sport can come together and admire what they admire, criticize what they don’t, but have fun with it. It’s a game. I mean, we all root for our teams, of course, but it’s just a game.

Albeit, the greatest game on Earth.

Hornets the better team right now.

I’m a lifetime Blazers fan, a 300 level season ticket holder, but was courtside in company seats friday night. The hornets outplayed us from wire to wire save for a three minute stretch of the second quarter, and the very start of the third. The Hornets did an amazing job on the boards. One of only a handfull of times all year the Blazers have been outrebounded. You guys got huge performances from several players. West was on fire, and Paul took over the game in the fourth just as you would expect your MVP to do. The guy who was overlooked by Portland was James Posey. A prior post mentioned Blazers playing good perimeter defense. I respectfully disagree. Our perimeter defense was the same as it has been all season long. Non-existent. The Blazers routinely leave shooters wide open at the three point line and posey burned us.

Regarding the Chandler-Pryzbilla altercation, I would say this: The way the NBA has handled similar situations in the past would be to eject both players, so I would not have been surprised if that happened. I think its a dumb policy however, to eject both players, when only one player escalated the situation from standard basketball, to a potential fight situation. Regardless of what anyone claims happened, Pryzbilla did not throw a punch in any way shape or form. Regardless of what your opinion of “standard” post defense in the NBA, Chandlers “swat” was not a standard swat. It was a VERY hard hit. Lastly, for him to say he was unaware of the injury to Pryzbilla, calls Chandler’s integrity into question. His wrist was HEAVILY bandaged, and Pryz had been guarding him and favoring that hand the entire night. So either Chandler is remarkably unintelligent, or an outright liar.

I believe Hornets fans who say Chandler is a good community citizen off the court, and I like Chandler’s game (I have him for my fantasy team), even though he is having an off year. But from the dozen or so times I’ve seen him on national tv games, or in person at the Rose Garden, he’s a thug on the court.

Good win NO, look forward to the next matchup with both teams at full strength.

Well, it's official.

No TC tonight. Przy was fined $7,500 and assessed a Flagrant One foul. Woo.

Another Blazer fan here....

That was a great game up until CP3 turned into CP3. He is a magician, I love his game. When he decided to turn it on, we were as helpless as a deer in headlights. One hornet I am not a fan of is the perpetually whiny Tyson Chandelor. It really just gets old, and it has been rubbing off on CP3, who is becoming quite the chatter box himself. At the end of the day though, its hard to blame those guys for working the refs.

With all that said, TC’s slap at pryz’s hand was dirty, no doubt about it. I dvr’d it and watched the replay several times. He clearly looks at the bandage on Joel’s wrist and swats DIRECTLY on top of it. His assertion that he didn’t know the hand was injured is flat out laughable. It was probably all over the scouting report and on top of that JOELS ENTIRE WRIST WAS COVERED IN A SPLINT AND TAPE. I guess TC expects us to believe he is blind and couldn’t see that? The fact he tries to cover up his clearly dirty play by saying “ummm, errrrr, I didn’t know it was hurt….” just makes him look guilty. He would have to be the dumbest basketball player to ever wear an nba uniform if he didn’t realize his matchup was playing wounded. It was a lame play by a very lame player….

/rant

Good game though, the hornets killed us from that point on and I have no defense for that. The better team won…

Or maybe he just wasn't even thinking about Joel's wrist and its status...

And just made an instinctual move to slap it away? Nothing in the replays says to me that Tyson is thinking “oh yeah, his hand is injured – let me hurt it some more.”

It was a dumb move by a Chandler, but I really don’t think he was trying to intentionally screw with Joel’s injured hand.
