Game 31: Hive Five

Woo, did we ever need that one.

Capt

32 points, 15 assists, 0 turnovers, and one primal roar.

48 minutes of exhilaration. I feel like I just ran a marathon, what with all those crazy runs. 25-10 by them, then the next second, 15-0 by us. We withstood the full powers of Kobe Bryant tonight, getting a glimpse of what the Toronto Raptors felt coming their way on Janurary 22nd, 2006. Kobe's dropped 50 on us in that past- I still remember him cruelly dissecting our defense in Charlotte that one time, including the game winner at the buzzer. But this was something else. Three threes in 93 seconds? 34 points on 14 shot attempts at one point? It was Kobe at his finest. He finished with 39 points on 22 shot attempts; thing is, our own David West one-upped him with 40 on 23 shot attempts. And he wasn't even our best player. That honor should probably go to Chris Paul, who set up at least half of West's jumpers. After the jump is the new, extra-nifty, super-shiny Hive Five format. Get excited people!

Star-divide

The hope is it should be a lot easier to visualize this way. A green star obviously indicates a plus performance, and that crossed out red circle thingy indicates the opposite. Now that your breath has been successfully taken away, I must ask you to direct your attention to the FT/FG bars. Unbelievable, right? Rate wise, we hit double as many FT/FG as the Lakers did... and L.A. is supposed to be the one going to the line all night long with all their star power. We simply were the more aggressive team tonight. The Lakers ended up taking 34 threes on the night to our 14. While they were hitting them at a crazy clip (47%), it ended up costing them in the end. During the brief period where they couldn't connect, we surged ahead via free throws and short jumpers.

Of course, it all starts with Chris Paul. Forget all the points and all the assists for a second. More than anything, I was impressed tonight by his quickness. I don't think he's had a game with more "burst" this year. The best example is the play on which Lamar Odom got hurt. I'll try to get video of this soon, since my words don't really do it justice. Basically, it was a hard trap on the top of the key; Paul shook Gasol with a fake and literally was at the free throw line before Gasol could turn his head. Odom ended up having to back-pedal hard, and I suspect that had something to do with his hyperextended knee. Paul hasn't looked this fluid all season. It's a great sign, going into his marquee matchup with Deron Williams in SLC tomorrow.

DX wasn't too shabby himself. Detractors will say that his 14-23 night from the floor and 12-13 night from the line was largely a function of Odom's absence. Truth is, West has struggled mightily against Pau Gasol as well. Even though Odom has been the primary defender on him, Gasol has seen plenty of time covering him and done an excellent job. So it was nice to see West go off against a player that routinely gives him trouble. Staying on the subject of Odom for a minute, I really like this win even though he sat out so much of it. Our offensive problems stemmed from the hard bottle-ups of Paul and lack of movement from the other players. While West's isolation plays were stifled by Odom, the overall team defense from L.A. had been the real problem. So even if you discount West's performance some, it makes less sense to discount the rest of our offensive success. Peja was constantly cutting across the lane, something we didn't see in the first two games. Butler hung out at the three point line a lot, but Posey was also involved in plenty of movement. I said in the preview that Byron Scott had to change something. And he did.

On to bullet land:

  • We missed a lot of wide open threes- a couple by Butler, and three or four by Peja. It's really quite impressive that we won this game by 11 despite L.A. hitting 11 more threes than us.
  • One of the problems that plagued us in the first 2 games was nonexistent today- blocked shots by the Lakers. L.A. ended up blocking only 2 shot attempts, both swats of Rasual Butler. What changed? I'd say two major things. First, I liked how Chris Paul switched up his approach in the paint. Earlier, he'd try to float his shot high over shot blockers to avoid having it blocked. Tonight, he tried to drive into the defender's body first before hoisting. By doing that, he got the foul call, or if he didn't get the foul call, he'd taken away the elevation of the shot blocker. Second, David West settled for the 15 footer instead of driving. West is one of a handful of players you want to settle for the jumper. He took what the D gave him tonight.
  • New Orleans did not block a shot.
  • Odd to see no Mo-Pete tonight. We definitely could've used him against Kobe in the 3rd. Devin Brown actually did a decent job out there, finishing with 5 points on 2 shot attempts (and his "turnover" was actually a botched charge call on a play where Fisher was clearly moving).
  • Paul played 44 minutes tonight, resulting in very little time for Antonio Daniels. Byron Scott hasn't tended to go to the 2 point guard lineup this year like he did last season with Jannero Pargo. Daniels finished with 0 pts, 0 asts, 0 rbs, 0 stls, 0 blks, 0 trns in 4 minutes. Meaning you'll probably find him on Basketbawful's WOTN tomorrow.
  • Tyson Chandler owned Andrew Bynum tonight, plain and simple. Faced with first half foul trouble, he played Bynum extremely well on defense. You'd like to see a little more than 8 rebounds from him, but his presence was felt defensively.
  • Stolen from the AP's recap: "The Lakers hadn’t allowed an opposing player to score more than 23 points in their previous seven games. West and Paul surpassed that total with plenty to spare in this game."
  • New Orleans flies to Utah tonight for a showdown with Deron Williams' Jazz. The back end of a road back-to-back is never fun, especially when it comes at the tail end of a 4 game swing, and even if Carlos Boozer is waiting for you in a suit. Still, I really, really hope Chris Paul can get the D-Will monkey off his back. He's consistently struggled against his close friend in that matchup. Really, that's the only thing D-Will > CP advocates have to cling onto at this point.
  • 15 assists. 0 turnovers. Mmmmmmmm.

Sooooo thrilled to see we won it !

quit agree that you said “I won’t be mad if we lose this game. I will be mad if we lose it the same way.” before this game.

But we won by 11 points !!!

Anyone else

a little discouraged we needed a 40pt and 32pt 15ast effort from our PF and PG to beat LA even after bynum, gasol, and odom were noshows?

I have to disagree a little with that samgoody

You can’t discount the job we did defending Bynum and Gasol. Even Hilton was playing good defense last night. We harassed their offense, but most importantly, we contested each one of Gasol’s little 5 foot face up jumpers. He’s deadly precise with those, and we contested every single one. I think saying that it took us a 40 pt effort on an off night by then can be used the other way too right? Why not say it took Gasol and Kobe scoring 30 for them last time on an off night by Paul and West? Truth is, their D shut us down last time and we did a good job this game.

Agree a little bit on Odom not being there. He was on his way to a great night I think (12 pts in 12 mins).

Not one bit disappointed!!

Bynum and Gasol were “no-shows” because excellent defense was played by Tyson, Hilton, Melvin, and all their helpers. Very good feet movement, minimal stupid fouls, just hard-nosed D-Fence.

Lamar was in the game for probably half his usual minutes, He got injured trying to foul our mini-beast. Serves him right, as they were beating on CP3 all night with excessive force.

Bryant and Fisher could not miss from 3 in the first 3 quarters, despite (in most cases) fairly tight 3-point defense. I don’t think Walton or Rafmar could have done better.

Stop and smell the sunhine, Sam!

That's another good point NOEngineer

On the 3’s. You have to think that was a little bit lucky in their favor.

Did anybody see the points in the paint split?

It was something like 40+ to 20 in favor of us. Nice to see us adjusting when the long ball isn’t falling.

This game might possibly delineate the "better" to "valuable" distinction.

CP is probably one of the 3 best players in the world, but he probably wasn’t the best on the floor las night. That said, he clearly was the most valuable

Hahah

But we are lucky that Farmar didn’t play… best backup PG in the league.
