Lots of interesting stuff from Jim. A few that stood out to me:

"Marcus Thornton looked sharp in his debut in front of his local fans, scoring six points on two treys in 12 minutes. His shots today came from spotting up and taking perimeter jumpers, but he’s also trying to mix up his offensive game by penetrating when the opportunity is there."

"Julian Wright had a second straight subpar game, now 2-for-17 from the field since Thursday.Scott said that he plans to use Wright as a starter all preseason "then see how it looks after that. I want him to get comfortable in that (starting) role. It’s a challenge to be a starter every night. It’s a lot of responsibility.""

Thunder, methinks...

We didn’t beat the Bobcats, but yet we still won. Excellent finish to a sloppy game. I went, so I feel qualified to make some observations:

1) Earl Barron looked much better than advertised. Dare I say he impressed me more than the supposedly improved Hilton…..
2) Darren Collison was fast and had excellent footwork while playing defense. He can give CP3 a big rest while CP3 is on the floor as a 2 guard by taking the bird-dog role. Not so great on the offensive end.
3) CP3, Devin, and Peja combined to miss 6 free throws that I counted. Too lazy to check the box score, but AAAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!
4) A line-up with Collison, Paul, and Posey will be one to watch. When they were on the floor they made life hell for OKC’s perimeter.
5) Darius Songalia plays some good defense, but seems to get smoked alot by faster players. His offense looked clumsy as well.
6) I was bummed that Ryan Bowen did not play. I wanted to cheer for him.
7) Julian Wright looks lost, on defense and offense. Chucking up ugly prayers, getting left behind by his man for open jumpers, and generally being ineffective. Peja wasn’t much tonight either, but he still has a sweet stroke when standing still. I hope the light bulb goes on in JuJu’s skull pretty soon, of we are in big trouble against San Antonio…..
8) The Honeybees are in much better shape this year. Quite impressive!
9) Replacement referees suck! No worse than regular referees, however…..
10) Thumbs down to the food vendors who didn’t show up for the game. Thanks to WOW Cafe for hanging in there to provide some non-institutional food choices. No Scooters, Creole food, Ice Cream of the Future, etc. I hope it’s an artifact of preseason that will be rectified for the regular season……
11) Possibly the lamest halftime entertainment ever. Lopsided pre-school basketball. I wanted a flaming hoop!

That is all.

Thanks a lot for this!

Hahaha re:Thunder, I really am getting all the mistakes out of the way in a hurry.

Was there any Marcus Thornton, even shooting around or something? I’ve been watching some LSU games of him, and it’s driving me crazy that I can’t find any live video of the Hornets in preseason so far. I’m sorry to hear about JuJu… it sounds more and more like he’s not making too much of this starting opportunity. How did the Hornets use him? Was it more like cutting and motion or was he being isolated for his shot attempts?

Interesting to hear about that CP/DC/Poz lineup. With BScott’s affinity for the two PG backcourt and his love for all things James Posey, I guess it will be something we’ll see a lot. Good to hear that it’s something that could work.

Also, what did you think of James Harden? He’s my 1b pick for ROY, though it’s a hunch more than anything else.

I haven’t yet caught a single preseason game, so thanks again for this…

Was also at the game

Um, some thoughts…

1) Marcus Thornton didn’t take a lot of shots in this one, but his shot is so pretty. I really like that, as a rookie, he’s ballsy enough to not be hesitant about taking threes. I have this feeling I’m going to like this kid, not really sure why, since I haven’t seen him enough. I hope he gets minutes.
2) D West played sort of lackadaisical and looked like he was POed about something the whole game. I know, I know. This is not shocking. Anyhow, not a good look for him or JuJu.
3) BJ Mullens’ pornstache is terrifying.
4) There was a lineup of Peja/Posey/Songaila at the 2/3/4 that we sort of liked, because there was all sorts of wily veteran sneakiness going on. In particular Songaila had a great behind the back dish off to Peja for three.
5) I always can’t help getting annoyed when Devin Brown has a good game (he started). Because I just strongly think other people dont look good on the floor when he’s out there. MW and I were trying to figure out why this is. He’s just a ball hog, I guess? Plus his ability to hit any kind of long shot comes and goes like crazy.
6) JuJu came out looking fiery and hustling in the first quarter, so I figured he was going to have a good game. He grabbed some rebounds, but his shot selection was aw.ful. And he played worse as the game went on.
7) Collison is very zippy. He snuck right to the rim the first two plays, which caused OKC to hilariously and randomly double him and leave CP open in the corner the next time down the floor. I think this speaks more to OKC’s young guys being dumb than it does to Collison’s offense being great. But anyhow I think he confused them with speed. Haha! He was chasing guys in circles on D.
8) I too was sad that this isn’t football and we can’t cut Hilton and sign Earl Barron. He looked good AND is a 7 footer.
9) Maybe the reason D West was so mad was because THEY CHANGED his “Wake up Mr West!” clip that always played when he scored. Just kidding, he probably got sick of it and changed it himself, and it is indeed still some Kanye bit that says “Mr West” but… I didn’t like. Bobby Brown got “it’s my prerogative” which I am sure he hates, and Marcus Thornton got the LSU fight song.
10) Posey dove for 2 loose balls, one during the 13-0 run that ended the game, got Ted up, and generally was being his veteran nasty self.
11) Speaking of the 13-0 run, this was actually quite the boring game and a lot of people played, most of them not particularly well. We were surprised at the 4 minute mark to see CP hop up and check in. What happened next was completely ridiculous, as the Hornets just steamrolled the Thunder and went from being down 3 to winning by 9. I wonder if Byron got sick of CP whining at him that he wanted to play, or he just decided we should have a preseason win.

Oh!

Also, there was a fight for a rebound and the refs said it went out off the Hornets. Hilton Armstrong went crazy and gestured and pitched a fit. During the following timeout he was still arguing about it. They ended up changing the call in his favor. Me: “This is probably the greatest moment of his career.” MW: “A ref decided something in Hilton’s favor. They should give him the game ball.”

Oh and,

Speaking of Devin Brown, there was a (too long) stretch of Devin and Bobby out there together that was particularly excruciating. Speaking of ball hogs. Byron Scott’s rule of thumb should be never never play two Browns at the same time.

Piling on....

I agree that West looked way off his normal game. He dropped some passes, misses some in-traffic layups, and clanked a few jumpers that are usually money. I really wish he would ditch the Ming The Merciless beard.

I disagree with those who say that CP3’s added muscle did not slow him down. He did not look as quick as I remembered. In fact, the whole team looked kind of stiff, with the exception of the rookies, until the last 3 minutes. CP3’s shot seems smoother than before, if that is possible, and he made some nifty passes as we have come to expect. Let’s keep him.

Marcus Thornton looks fast and confident on offense, but a little lost on defense. He was trailing his man by a few steps every time I was watching him. I excuse it much easier from him than from Julian, however.

I too have mixed feelings about Devin Brown. He missed both free throws then sunk a three the next trip. Obviously some mental issues. I don’t like ballhogs either, but he does hustle on every play, being one of the few I saw beating CP3 down the floor on the break a couple of times. He is also willing to draw contact, which only CP3 and Darius seemed willing to do. However, if you miss half your free throws what is the point? Bottom line is that I cringe every time he gets the ball. Bottomer than that is he picked up his option so we can’t cut him.

At least Wright has a chance

It’s good to hear Scott isn’t going to destroy any confidence Julian may have left by keeping him a starter. Sounds like it’s definitely mental if it was apparent Wright got worse as the game progressed. The coaches and players need to rally around him as he is quite vital to their success this year.

I'm no commie, but the Reds shall be the best again!

Considering so many guys had mediocre performances...

…I still felt good about this one. Lots of guys showed flashes of something that impressed. If we can get consistent once Byron starts getting comfortable with a certain rotation, I think this team can go far this year.
