The Hornets' Next Coach

Now obviously the list is incomplete... I can't choose where to put guys like Avery Johnson yet. But I would be stunned- STUNNED- if the Hornets didn't hire internally. (Jeff Bower is on there as a joke if Shinn makes him clean up his own mess a la the Timberwolves). In my estimation, an internal hiring will do very little to change our problems this year. A system overhaul is probably required at this point. At the very least, a team that runs more and doesn't randomly switch between zone and man would be nice.

Oh my goodness man, it's not a joke!
YOU THINK THIS IS FUNNY?
:-P
Ugh. Worst. Day. Ever.

This is really serious
Long-term NBA basketball in the NBA is now in serious doubt. If they lose their fanbase and CP3???
I'm no commie, but the Reds shall be the best again!
Lol
Good logical take. How can it not worry you that we’ve got one of the top 3 young players in the game with no light at the end of the tunnel in a city that has had plenty of trouble supporting the Hornets?
I'm no commie, but the Reds shall be the best again!
Because the city HASN'T had trouble supporting the Hornets
Last year the Arena was over 98% capacity on average. People are wearing shirts, waving flags, and stickering up cars. It’s not the city I’m worried about. No chance. Nor is CP3 going anywhere. He’s locked under contract. Worst case scenario, he rides out one bad year, like Dwayne Wade did last year, and we lose some bad contracts, and move on.
And best case scenario, CP finally gets the team behind them, they rally under a new coach, and win 50 games. I’m kind of flattered by the way so many fans across the League are relishing in the Hornets’ seeming-demise. It means they’re scared. And they should be. We have Chris Paul.
All good points mW
but don’t discount the problems prior to last year. There was a real concern that Shinn was going to take them elsewhere. New fans aren’t as ready to continue to support a team through tough times – especially when economic times are harsh.
No doubt CP3 is under contract but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t push for a trade. With as much weight he carries, they’d have to appease him + he’s one of the few players in the league that could bring back multiple legitimate talent in a trade.
Trust me, I don’t want any of this stuff to happen but your outlook is a little too rosy. Besides, he’d probably have to ride out more than just this year as their cap looks bad for next year too.

He's base year compensation this year
That makes him very, very difficult to trade even if he wants it and Shinn wants to accommodate him. It could happen, but the rules make it hard.

Paul's BYC status essentially requires
Trading Peja to compensate, which is all but impossible in the current economic environment.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
Lot of talent there
This Portland fan thinks you still win 48-50 and are dangerous in the playoffs. You won’t get a good seed, so you’ll be fortunate to advance, but the team you face had better be ready.
The only way this falls apart is if CP3 is unhappy with the move and demands a trade, or there’s a salary dump. The guys you have will make the playoffs.

Happy!
I haven’t really taken it in yet nor have I reflected enough to feel 100% towards any particular candidate, but A) I am happy and B) I think Sam Mitchell would be the best long-term fit with this team/group of players.

No interim tag for Bower
Yeah okay, whatever you say Shinny. This looks like what Minnesota did to McHale last year.

West describes “philosophical differences” between Scott and some players on the team. He describes the team as often “stagnant.”
Ya think? I’m surprised they had a player speak at all. Though David did seem the most unhappy with Scott this year. No word from CP makes me nervous.
From Niall over at 247:
Interesting post by CJ Paul on Twitter: “I can’t stand when ppl that don’t know Basketball, make major basketball decisions. It turns out to be a disaster.”
what a day to sign up!
I just signed up this morning before the news broke. Hella timing. I take it a lot of folks were hoping this would have happened in the offseason after last season’s disappointment? If West’s comment is any indication of the feelings in the locker room, this has to be a good thing, even if the team doesn’t drastically improve.
Welcome!
Haha… yeah, maybe the players try harder for Bower. Maybe not. I guess we’ll see what happens tomorrow vs. Portland.
Looking forward to that game now
I might have to try to track down a ticket for that one.
Ummmm, what not fire the person who over paid Peja AND James Pose (though I think he was a good addition….but $40 mil?!?!)
Interesting Thought...
Even though this team has been falling apart, it is still sad, nevertheless, to see Coach Scott leave the Hornets. I don’t know if this has been pointed out, but here’s an interesting thing:
“That’s right; all four coaches who were honored prior to last year’s winner were fired not too long after winning the COY hardware. In order: Mike D’Antoni, Avery Johnson, Sam Mitchell, and now, Scott. In fact, of the 10 men who were COY winners from 1999 through 2008, just one — San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich — is still employed by the club he won it with.
So you know what that means … you’re next, Mike Brown!”

Scott was Coach of the Year. 1.1 seasons later, he’s toast. Amazing how quickly fortunes change in the NBA.
I’m neutral on this move. Thought that Scott did some good things in NO. Bower has done a decent job as a GM, considering the fiscal constraints he faces. I’m ok giving him a chance as head coach.
Sometimes a change can be good.
ps. hehe, I loved atthehive’s “what a coup” remark… funny
I like the idea of Sam Mitchell taking over. He’d be my first choice. That said, I think it’s probably best to wait until the offseason and hire someone then … but if the hire was going to be made now, then Mitch would be my first choice.
Sam coached a similar style of team in Toronto which I like. A pick and roll heavy offense based on the talents of their shooters and creative abilities of their point guards.
I’d worry about JVG taking the ball out of Chris Paul’s hands too much. I’d like to see less responsibility on Paul to create everything, but I think JVG will take it to an extreme like he did with Steve Francis. Obviously, Paul is a much better player and will handle it better than Francis did, but still it worries me.
