Next question

Will he crack starting lineup? He’s already the team’s 6th man. Personally I think it’s a good spot for him. Do we want Posey/Peja/Brown coming off the bench? He’s young and seems a better fit for the underwhelming 2nd unit. He SHOULD however see minutes during crunch time in the 4th.

it’s been so easy to hate devin for his absolutely putrid production, but since he’s been had to mostly by circumstance (and byron scott’s nearly on par horrid coaching/sub-selections) play a slightly more prominent role & they’ve started interviewing him and giving him more press, i was stunned that he seems like such a nice guy! i thought he would be stand-off’ish & AI-like because of his style of play, but he seems genuinely legit, at least he’s an asset (or seems to be) in terms of chemistry

And who would Shinn get to replace Bower? It’s not exactly like George Shinn is every GM’s dream to work for.

You positive pookey?

Only 30 GM spots out there. I’d imagine Shinn would have a line out the door of possible replacements in a NY minute

Looking for in depth solid basketball analysis? Try www.basketballfreeforall.com!

by RedHopeful on Nov 19, 2009 9:59 PM CST up reply actions

I'm a Kings fan & I have no stake in this

But, let me also point this out too. Shinn is a notorious cheap budgeter, and there are prospective GM candidates who would not be thrilled to work with an owner who doesn’t exactly spend the bank where & how he could.

The Hornets have a small staff budget to work with, and that’s because Shinn doesn’t want to spend that money (or can’t—makes no difference to me). Now, you can argue this any way you want, but the Hornets are not a glamorous job and it would be difficult to put a contending team with Chris Paul as the centerpiece in less than 2 years. (And Chris Paul is a top 5 player.) The NBA has a ton of teams throughout history that essentially had 1 good year and then weren’t the same afterward (for a variety of reason’s naturally).

So, while you think that Shinn would have a line of replacements, also consider this. The assistant GM’s in Portland and Houston (Tom Penn and Sam Hinkie respectively) turned down the Minnesota job because Glen Taylor essentially wouldn’t put the money in that both guys felt it would take to put a competitive franchise in the game so to speak.

Honestly, Taylor has a lot more money and has always been willing to spend more than Shinn ever has. There will not be a line of guys that will take the Hornets anywhere better than what Bower has currently done.

That’s my opinion though.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

Oh, hes in the laegue two and Jayson Thomson and that Boggins dude on Milwokee, and Occur for the Jizz. Its a talented laegue.--Kfan in Korea

by pookeyguru on Nov 19, 2009 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

Shinn's "cheapness" is overstated...

I’ll borrow some facts from a post over at Hornets247…

Byron Scott had a top 5 salary among NBA coaches. The Hornets payroll is 12th in the NBA right now and Shinn is paying the luxury tax.

I know lots of people dislike Shinn, and I understand that – I’m not a fan either, but the Hornets have been a consistently competitive franchise aside from the fist few expansion years and down year here and there that all teams have. Scratch the first three years of a the team’s existence (teams ALWAYS suck in that period), and you have a franchise with a winning percentage of .531.

by Caleb462 on Nov 19, 2009 10:16 PM CST up reply actions

I think Shinn's a crappy owner for a lot of reason's

If you don’t have less than stellar teams in those first 4 years, you probably don’t get Larry Johnson or Alonzo Mourning at that time. The NBA draft has generally been about the worst teams getting the top talent through the draft. It’s not that easy to separate it. You can choose to do so; it’s not a valid argument from where I stand. Even then, the winning % for the Hornets has been around 500 which is not easy for any franchise to do. So I see your point.

That being said, I think the best chance of the Hornets getting someone is like Mike Dunleavy Sr who wanted to get back into the game. Is that what you think will really improve the Hornets if Bower gets fired?

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

I think CP3

is on the Bower boat now. He doesn’t seem to worried much about Scott anymore now that his team is doing much better without him being the coach. I think when CP3 comes back we are back in the playoff race. All we need is one more wing that can score and I think we can make a push with this team.

2 things that are clearly evident in the early Bower era:

(1) The best players will play, regardless of if they’re rookies
(2) The offense is creative, and players actually move off the ball to get open.

Collison

is really doing well filling in for Chris. I can’t wait to see the 2 of them in the back court together and Collison starting to get his stroke down. I no longer want Thornton to start, at least not yet because Brown has done a good job on defense and can score a little too, so until Li’l Buckets can get the defense down, I think his 6th man role is perfect.

Why not us? http://hornetshoops.blogspot.com/

Devin Brown is still Devin Brown, but he may not be not last year's Devin Brown

I think sometimes we forget that last year’s Devin Brown was Brown at his absolute worst, he looked out of shape, his jumpshot was nowhere to be found, etc.

He seems a bit revitalized this year. Granted, he’s still not a legit starting 2, not even close… but if he does continue to get playing time then maybe he can be the 13-15 PER guy he was in SA and in his earlier stint in New Orleans.

by Caleb462 on Nov 19, 2009 10:00 PM CST up reply actions

Hey here's how I look at it

Last year the Nuggets were starting Dahntay Jones at SG. He wasn’t much of a scorer at all, mainly a defensive specialist. I remember him giving Chris Paul fits last year in the playoffs with scrappy play. The reason I use him as an example is that if you can play some defense and be able to score consistently, then you are good enough to start in this league and help your team get to the playoffs. So if you look at it like that, Devin Brown is a legitimate starter on this team, and he plays his role very well.

Why not us? http://hornetshoops.blogspot.com/

by LocoSaint on Nov 19, 2009 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

God I hate Dahntay Jones

But I see what you meant.

I guess what I meant by “legit starting 2” is an atleast average or slightly above average player. Brown is below average any way you slice at, but if he can just be “slightly below average” – play some D, make some shots, not make horrible decisions on a consistent basis, as opposed to “abysmal” – then that’s good and he can help the team.

by Caleb462 on Nov 19, 2009 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

I'm with LocoSaint on this one.

People panned Mo two years ago, when he was clearly an important piece of the puzzle. Every team has a 5th best starter, and they just have to know how to contribute. If Devin can keep playing this way he will definitely be that guy, and then some.
