Phoenix 103 (10–3) | New Orleans 110 (5–8)

Wow, right? How did that happen?

I have to admit, 15 minutes before the game tonight I sat down in my seat at the arena and thought, "Oh yeah, this is a TNT game. Now everyone will get to see the slaughter. Like the Christmas Day Massacre all over again."

And why not? Despite beating the Clip Show the other night, we've been playing some pretty uninspiring ball. Not to mention that the glue that holds this team together is sitting on the sidelines in a (formidable) suit. Take that and throw it out against the team with the best record in the conference and who do you think walks away with the W? Thankfully, no one on the Hornets was buying my sour nancy act.

The Suns scored first, but then Hornets rattled off 15 unanswered points, capping an improbable run that brought the previously listless crowd roaring to their feet. 15 points for the Hornets, 2 for the Western Conference-leading Suns. (I would like to reiterate that CP3 did not play. At all.) Sure, those numbers were unsustainable–Phoenix had to start hitting shots at some point–but the by then, the buzz in the arena was flying. It almost felt like home-court advantage again. Like, dare I say, 2007. More correctly, it was fun in a way that the previous 10 or so games hadn't been.

At any rate, Phoenix closed the gap and even took the lead a few times, but Hornets dominated in a few key areas to seal the deal. For starters, we rebounded like crazy tonight. 56 to 38 was the final tally, but more importantly we finished with a 51% rate on the offensive glass (that would be 25 to 14) which led to a 31 to 13 advantage on second chance points. It probably didn't hurt that we shot high percentages from deep (52%) and the stripe (83%), but it was our aggression on the boards that gave us the real advantage. Oh, that and we finally played like a "team" (Devin Brown passed! Like 5 times!). Byron had run that notion out of the locker room, so it's nice to see it make a return.

Bullets after the jump.

Star-divide

  • Peja!!! You win the "Who will put up the gaudiest stat line CP's absence" of the game award. 25 points on 19 shots, 7 of 11 from deep, 13 boards, 1 assist, and 1 turnover in 35 minutes. Thank you, sir.
  • Emeka also had a nice night, finishing with 13 points, 12 boards (7 of which were on offense), 2 steals, and 1 block. Actually, "game" might not be the right word. More like "15ish minutes of a game. He started hot and then cooled quite a bit. Which is a shame, since he was on pace for your general 40 point, 28 rebound game after the first quarter.
  • Emeka had a filthy block on Stoudemire. Trust me, it deserves its own bullet.
  • Solid performances for the rookies as well. Thornton continues to impress with his aggression, while Collison seems to be getting better with his decision-making. Both are still a little reckless, but that's to be expected. Buckets finished with 19 points on 12 shots, 4 boards, 1 assist, and 1 steal while Dime contributed 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, and only 1 turnover in 32 minutes.(Of course, it's be nice if Collison did better than 4 of 15 from the field, but he almost made up for it with a perfect 6 of 6 from the stripe... almost.)
  • "Bleh" performance from DX. Granted, he only played 30 minutes, but really he couldn't seem to get it going. Finished the night with 6 points on 2 for 11 shooting, 4 boards, 5 dimes, and a steal.
  • Yes, I'm avoiding Devin Brown.
  • The Suns came out cold tonight, bricking quite a few shots early on. They snapped of it somewhere in the middle of the first quarter, but failed to really take control of the game at any point.
  • Channing Frye impressed me quite a bit tonight. His line wasn't stellar–11 points and 10 boards isn't going to turn too many heads or anything–but I really liked his game... well, not the 1 for 7 from deep, but he's been hitting those at a crazy clip this year, so I can forgive him. I always wanted the Hornets to go after him during our "we need more solid big men coming off the bench" era. Oh, wait...
  • Was anyone else amused to see that a team is rostering one of the Collins brothers?
  • Fine. Devin Brown. You did well tonight. Even though I cringed every time you touched the ball, I have to admit you earned your keep tonight. Yes, there were plenty of dumb shots, poor passing decisions, and really dumb shots, but I suppose I can positive on you for one recap.
  • In case anyone missed it, we rolled out a "Mardi Gras" uniform yesterday. I don't care what Paul Lukas says, it's ugly. That may be the point–you know, to revel in being tacky–but it's still ugly. Who knows, maybe it'll distract the other teams when we wear them in February.

Really great win tonight.

The team put the throttle down early and never let up. Every Suns run was answered. Guys were aggressive on D, moving about on O, and letting the shots rip with great efficacy. In many of our first few losses, shots just weren’t falling. Now, maybe that’s balancing out. Or maybe Bower/Floyd are just drawing up better shots. Probably both.

Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to exact some revenge on the Hawks Saturday? Wouldn’t that be amazing?

Awesome game!

Awesome effort from the Hornets tonight. This game can’t be put in a negative light. Too huge a win when nobody expected it to do that to this game. Saying that, I’ll disagree with you on your negative points.

1) DEVIN BROWN has been bashed by every Hornets blog known to man for the past year and a half. Please, the guy deserves some credit when he’s playing well. IMO, Thornton and him are the best backcourt combo we have with CP3 out (at least the way he’s been playing). Laugh at me all you want. But he’s playing with confidence, playing motivated defense, and driving/kicking efficiently. He was looking to make plays for others WAY before looking for himself while he was running the point. He even showed a little killer instinct and took it upon himself to make a couple huge buckets to stop the bleeding when the Suns were pushing. The man is confident and comfortable right now, both of which are extremely important in any sport. Good for you DB!

2) David West did not have a great game stat-wise but the defensive rotation between him and the other bigs was infinitely better the last 2 games. Also, though he did have a rough shooting night, he passed out of numerous double teams and failed post ups. He is still our best 1 on 1 offensive presence with CP3 out so you have to give him 10 shots a game and kudos to him for finding ways to make plays without scoring. 5 assists is pretty high for DW. His rebounding numbers were lacking but he sat for extended minutes due to foul trouble and boxed out fairly well (especially for West) from when I was paying attention. You don’t have a huge rebounding gap like we did without your starting PF contributing one way or the other. I love the way he’s bringing the energy and taking it upon himself to keep this train moving with CP3 down.

Good counter points.

Allow me to defend.

RE: Devin
We bash him because he is a remarkably inefficient player who makes poor decisions when passing and shooting. Periodically, he’ll string together a handful of buckets, but he always shoots a low percentage even when he does (less than 40% on the year). It’s not that he’s a “bad” player per se, he’s just a role player who’s been given too much of a leash (for instance, he really should never be running the point). He did make some nice passes last night, but he still turns the ball over too much and takes one too many on fast breaks and transitions. I don’t want him benched, I just want him used wisely.

RE: DX
Apologies for coming off negative on David. His D was good. He just had a bad shooting night and, frankly, even when this does happen I’d still rather him take 10+ shots than most of our other guys. Oh, and he’s never been all that aggressive on the boards. 4 rebounds in 30 minutes is pretty par for the course. I only used the word “bleh” because it wasn’t that long ago that this guy was putting up 20+ points and 7+ boards on a regular basis.

Just when we all gave this season up for good

Here come the Hornets, who with the rookie play and this win, should be making people think twice about dismissing them.

I said after the win against the Clips, but I love our young players. It seems like we’re getting better and thorton & collison & even Brown are improving each game.

Maybe we really were just trying to play catch up by fitting Okafor in against the cream of the NBA. Myabe we’re starting to figure out-even w/o CP3. Makes you wonder what could happen if all these guys are getting more playing time, improving, and then getting CP back in the mix. Maybe…just maybe…we can actually do something this year.

Of course, we get the hawks on Saturday, so we’ll have quickly get another reality check. I’ll just hope that reality is good.

I'm proud of my damn strong football team. Have a great day!

No mention of Collison?

He posted a nice line of 15pt/5ast/5reb/1st/6-6FT. That is a nice line and excited to see him play the next couple of weeks….

Does anyone know how long CP3 will be out? Why isnt there a definitie timeline? Does this worry anyone else?

He's mentioned after the jump.

I tend to lump our rookies together in the bullets (perhaps I will separate them from here on out). Pretty good line, but lots of missed shots. He’s doing admirably as a stand-in for Paul, though.

My bad

Didn’t catch that part. Collison is a keeper….do you think he still gets 25 minutes when Paul gets back?

by Bellringer21 on Nov 20, 2009 10:25 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No worries

25? I don’t know.

But if he gets the bulk of the backup PG minutes and maybe some time in the back court with Paul (in the occasional 2 PG setup we use late in games) then I’ll be happy.

He did play with Paul the first game without Scott

He played with Paul when Paul got hurt…..curious to see what other people think when Paul gets back.

Paul gets 35 minutes gives 13 minutes to Collison at PG….wonder if he can get 12 at SG. Hoping Thorton gets 35 at SG and the hornets use a 3-guard rotation, but that might be asking too much.

Lets see what Thornton/Collison can do….we know what Brown/Brown/Peterson can (not much)

Collison's shot wad horrible through 3

When I saw he ended up with 15, I was astounded. That said. He finished great and really ran the O well throughout, which, as a PG is his primary job. Also, his defense was great, good lateral movement and awareness combined with his speed makes him very effective.

What impressed me most about Collison was

that he was quick enough to cover one of the fastest players in the NBA. No I’m not talking about Nash I’m talking about Barbosa. Barbosa didn’t drive past him once during the game, that’s incredible. Seems like the days of Mike James and Antonio Daniels getting blown by are finally over.

Oh yeah Marcus Thornton is the real deal.

Glad someone else noticed this

Mentioned it in the game thread.

For kicks, I’d love to see him go up against Tony Parker.

Wow.

Great point. I didn’t notice that during the game. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm just afraid

My Marcus Thornton love is going to reach epic, almost creepy, levels by the end of 2009. He’s just fearless out there. I’ve loved him since pretty much the minute I saw him in summer league. I doubt it’s going to change anytime soon. He’s a rookie, and yet it seems he instinctively knows that balance between shooting confidently and shooting recklessly, better than some of our vets. Oh, when he got hot from three the other night he took that last one he probably shouldn’t have. But he generally plays within his means. And I think once he gets comfortable in the NBA game, he’ll be shooting those threes at a higher percentage than we’ve been seeing. His release is so fast.

I’ll stop, I’ll stop.

It's more than just his shot

Have you guys watched how he postures himself on almost every play. Fantastic IQ puts himself in solid position to receive the pass – especially on cuts to the basket. I’m salivating over CP3 and him developing a nice bond later in the season.

Did you guys hear this stat?

Suns have lost 16 STRAIGHT games when they’ve been televised on TNT.

Sadly, it's not just TNT

I’m not sure of the exact numbers, but the Suns also got smoked a few times on ABC and ESPN as well last year. I think it’s mostly because they end up playing marquee (and hence, better) teams for those games, but I’m sure there’s a few inexcusable losses in there… kinda like last night!

I kid! I kid! The Hornets out-worked the Suns and earned that win. Good luck to y’all and here’s to a speedy recovery to CP3.

Thanks Mike

Best of luck to you guys too. If NOH can’t get it together, I’d be all in l for PHO representing the West. One of the few teams where I really can’t find a single guy I can possibly not like.
