Game 50: Hive Live

Boston 89 (43-11) | New Orleans 77 (30-20)

What a collapse.

The Hornets fought a close battle for 36 minutes with the reigning champs tonight. At the end of three, the Hornets found themselves tied 64-64 and keeping pace with the Celtics in the paint and on the boards. But iit took only four and a half minutes and a 15-3 run by the C's at the beginning of the fourth to put the game out of reach and spoil CP's return to the hardwood.

That fourth quarter was just terrible. We were giving open looks to anyone who came knocking. We got sloppy on D, gave up position on easy rebounds, and went ice cold from the field (we only notched 13 points in the final 12 minutes).

Peja and DX (our two primary scorers) went a combined 6 for 24 from the field, with Peja adding a 1 for 6 performance from deep. Sadly, a lot of those shots were pretty open, especially a handful of open looks to Peja in the fourth (that could have closed the gap).

Star-divide

Other than our shots drawing iron (or air), here are some other totals you may be interested in (all numbers reflect stats before Byron pulled our starters):

  • Rebounds: 38–33 (adv. Boston)
  • Points in the Paint: 38–30 (adv. Boston)
  • Second chance points: 8–0 (adv. Boston)

Boston didn't have a great night tonight (except for Pierce, who was mostly unstoppable), so it's a bit of a shame that we couldn't capitalize. Let's just hope we can get it together over the break. We've got a long uphill battle before we can regain solid ground in the playoff race.

***
Couple of observations before I leave you:

  • CP was breaking ankles all nigh. He had a nice crossover that sent Eddie House flying into a DX screen, but his best move came late in the thrid, when a ridiculous fake made Gabe Pruitt trip over his own feet and slide into the key as Paul sunk a shot from the top of the key. Pretty sweet.
  • CP picked up 2 quick fouls in the first four minutes of the first, so naturally Byron sat him. I'm not crazy about that strategy, but I let it go. That is until Byron let him sit for almost a full 12 minutes. The Celtics didn't gain too much ground in that time (the bench actually held there own for a while), but with the game being so close for so long, it's a crime to only have played CP 31 minutes.
  • Ok, that previous statement ignores the fact that CP just came back from an injury. Maybe benching him wasn't a terrible idea after all. My real beef with Byron is when he let Chris sit through the 15-3 without at least trying to stop the bleeding with a timeout. When he finally got around to putting Chris back in, the game was out of reach.
  • Paul Pierce has this habit of wincing every time he tries to draw contact (and a foul). I might actually be inclined to believe he was in pain if he was bouncing around off the likes of LeBron or Dwyane Wade, but tonight he was being "guarded" by none other than Peja Stojakovic. I wasn't buying the act. Too bad the refs didn't share my sentiments.
  • Antonio Daniels nailed an alley-oop to Sean Marks. Since we have to give such things names around here, I'm going to toss this one out: the "Red Eye." Takers?

No.

But I can hear Gil in my head: “Tyson might take the Crescent City Connection home, but Marks can’t. We’ll call his alley-oops the ‘Louis Armstrong International.’”

Followed by Bob saying: “well, he sure got plenty of air under him on that pass from Daniels!”

How about...

“The Scrub Connection”

I mean, I love those two guys… but I like the ring of that.

As for the game… argggghhhhejthaeltklhklh!! That’s how I felt. After 3 quarters I felt like the Celtics had pretty much been outplayed… and some silly fouls (and calls) were the main thing keeping the Celtics in it. Unfortunately, the bench was completely inept to start the 4th.

I agree with this: “My real beef with Byron is when he let Chris sit through the 15-3 without at least trying to stop the bleeding with a timeout.”

Yeah, I know Byron wanted to limit CP3’s minutes tonight… but it was obvious after just a minute or two that Boston was going to run away with it if something didn’t change. I don’t know why Byron let that go on as long as it did.

Oh well… have to just shake it off. The team will have to go 20-12 post all-star break to get to the 50 win mark. That seems very doable as long as injuries don’t continue to crop up.

I was looking at the Hornets's remaining schedule and for the most part, it's SO easy.

I mean the first couple games are tough against Orlando and Los Angeles but I mean we’re already done with Portland, Boston, Cleveland, Denver, and Detroit. That leaves San Antonio, Los Angeles, Utah, and Orlando(1 game) as the difficult teams remaining. I don’t count Dallas, Houston, or Phoenix as tough teams because for the most part they were healthy for the first half and we were able to get more wins then them even with our injuries and schedule. Oh and Houston will never ever be completely healthy for the whole season so that’s why I said the were pretty healthy. If we beat every team we should beat especially at home, then we could only have 3 losses! I know that would be very difficult to establish that kind of streak but if we are completely healthy, then we should be around that loss mark from the 3-6 ratio. We without a doubt in my mind, should easily reach the 50 win mark and be able to go into the playoffs with some momentum.

March looks pretty easy

April looks to be a bit brutal.

Who knows what will happen? But I’m optimistic. Putting a streak together like you describe seems unlikely, but its not out of the question. I would love to see it.

I agree completely.

Byron put in garbage players, and those garbage players got garbage points (i.e., none). There was no meltdown. He let the Celtics get away easily. Apparently, he thinks the most important time to put in scrubs is when it’s a tie game going into the fourth quarter.

There wasn't a collapse in the fourth.

It is no surprise that we barely got any points with these players starting the fourth:
- Antonio Daniels
- Devin Brown
- Sean Marks
- James Posey
- Ryan Bowen — Why in God’s name does Scott keep using him? Overall, Bowen game the Celtics free throws and the Hornets turnovers. He’s worse than useless.

Byron Scott thought points were going to magically appear, apparently. He digged the Hornets into a hole they couldn’t get out of.

Dude, calm down.

Ultimately, it was an unimportant game. I’d way rather focus on getting Chris an co. healthy and winning conference and division games.

True.

There were some larger goals at stake.

The point I was trying to make was that I was surprised that Byron felt the need to rest Chris as long as he did at the beginning of the fourth after making him sit 11 minutes in the first half… especially with a W looking possible. But I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt to Byron on the grounds that a healthy CP for the rest of the season beats the hell out of one win against the C’s. No contest.
