CHANDLERS BACKKKKKK

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111111!!!11111

Lee's recap is right below this. I'll bump it back up to the top later tonight/tomorrow, but right now... wow.

My assessment: one of two things has happened. (A) There's something seriously wrong with Tyson that hasn't been brought up by the Hornets (bone damage? etc.). (B) The Thunder had semi-cold feet, concerning Tyson's low stats, all along, and the (expected) injury assessment of Tyson gave them the perfect excuse to rescind the deal.

Thursday

Some Important News from Chris Broussard:

Chandler's baffled. He was examined by the doctors in Oklahoma City, and you know, he had the ankle injury and missed the last 12 games before the All Star break. But that had nothing to do with why the trade was rescinded. They looked at his big left toe, which Oklahoma's team doctor had operated on in 2007 and they determined that the risk of re-injury is great. That stunned Chandler. He felt like his toe was fine. He's had a little pain over the years... but he's a bit stunned. Chandler's excited to be back as well, but his mind is kind of spinning right now.

Hometown Hornets:

With the trade of Tyson, there seemed to be more. Turns out, there was. The Hornets were trying to protect themselves from being stuck with a $12 million contract for a player who might not return to that nightly double-double form. I welcome Tyson back to the team, and I'm excited to have the Crescent City Connection live on. But I'm anxious that his history of foot injuries might hamper his future. If that's the case, it puts this team at a serious disadvantage.

Chad Ford:

[Hornets] are [still] talking to teams. They feel like OKC way over reacted to Chandler's turf toe issue. The question is ... do they have enough time to make a deal. A team would have to be pretty sure that Chandler is healthy to make another deal for him.

Wednesday

ESPN:

The New Orleans Hornets decided to trade Tyson Chandler to clear some cap space and add depth to the frontcourt. They'll have to go back to the drawing board.

The Hornets announced on Wednesday that the Oklahoma City Thunder did not medically clear the center and therefore rescinded the trade. Chandler would have gone to the Thunder for forwards Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith.

Yahoo!:

The Oklahoma City Thunder doctors have red-flagged a turf toe condition with newly acquired center Tyson Chandler and the New Orleans Hornets trade has been voided, league executives said Wednesday night.

"It’s blown up," one league executive said.

Hoopsworld:

It's expected that the Thunder will make a subsequent deal to move their highly-coveted front court players elsewhere, though it seems unlikely they would land a player of Chandler's caliber with so little time left between now and the trade deadline to work out the details.

Jeff Bower:

We welcome Tyson back with open arms. We went into this trade to garner more frontcourt depth to add to our team as we continue our push towards the playoffs. We expect Tyson and the rest of our big guys to step up to the challenge."

Sam Presti, OKC GM

"We were pleased to add Tyson to the Thunder roster. During the course of the physical examination and outside consultations, some questions arose that gave us cause for concern. We felt that this course of action was the best for our organization."

Chris Paul:

“I’m excited to have T.C. back. I think it will give us a huge lift. Hopefully it will bring us closer together. You know, T.C. is family to us, so there won’t be any animosity when he comes in here and he understands what’s been the goal all along.”

More news as it comes in...

Shit

I love Tyson, I’m just not so sure the trade was 1) really that bad for us insofar as this season’s concerned or 2) it mortgaged our future. The main problem is we should have been able to maximize his value beyond what we got, even though in a vacuum exclusively this season, I’d actually rather have Wilcox & Joe Smith rather than a perpetually hampered Tyson for the rest of the season.

Turf toe’s akin to the hamstring injury that Calderon’s trying to shake, it’s a recurrent pain condition, at the base of the big toe which severely restricts jumping & acceleration.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turf_toe
the Blue Jays Troy Glaus had it and it pretty much mooted his mobility, and he’s a roided up fat man who had to move every other inning. Tyson has it & he’s in a sport in which its implication’s far graver I think than anyone here’s considering.

It makes me sad to trade Tyson because he’s young & will continue to develop, but we’re inevitably going to have to move people for space, and there’s not going to be much good value for Peja, it would be nice to move Posey but I’m not sure if that’s even remotely possible (?), so it looks from where I’m standing he’s going to have to go unless there is a creative alternative no one’s disclosed (distinctly possible). But Bower has to get a 1st rounder or else his negotiating skills need first aid.

the implication of a hampered Tyson for the rest of the season, slowing down the offense, possibly causing us to overrate the improved interior defense & cost us games, I mean think of of an injured Tyson D’ing up against the premier bigs in the playoffs this year, as opposed to a significantly enhanced bench & a resurgent Wilcox. This makes me think this wasn’t a bad move, and would have been a great deal if Bower had gotten a 1st rounder, which is imperative now that we have another shot

Can't Agree

1) Our future is already tough. I’d rather have Chandler finish the year as a Hornet and go from there rather than rent Wilcox/Smith for the rest of this year and really have no prospects for any solid big.

2) Plenty of other athletes besides Troy Glaus have had turf toe and recovered just fine.

I'm no commie, but the Reds shall be the best again!

As if it wasn’t awkward before, Tyson’s going to feel strange everytime he looks at the staff.

by Fundefined on Feb 18, 2009 10:52 PM CST reply actions

I think TC knows Coach Scott respects him, and that's all that matters.

Plus, he knows the guys are tight with him. I think the Hornets should not be asking what is better for this season, but what is better for the franchise. Clearly, in the long run, we’re better with Tyson as part of our big 4.

Our luxury tax situation should have been fixed by trading an unused wing and a extra back-up big, not trading one of our key players.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE TYSON AND WELCOME HIM BACK LIKE HE NEVER LEFT!!!!

NOW we DEFINITELY can and will contend with not only S.A. but L.A. as well. News is his toe is not even a problem its just the risk of reinjury. IM SO PUMPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now we should trade Peja in the offseason for some guys to cut payroll.

Let JuJu start and Posey come off the bench still. JuJu will learn from his mistakes and develop into the star we all know he can be.

Not sure that it's fool-proof...

But I do like that approach. The problem will be finding a team that would want to trade for Peja. Guess we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

How about Charlotte? They're trying to get rid of Gerald Wallace. Wallace for Peja? Probably not.

Maybe the Kings since they just traded their whole team away. I’m sure Peja would like to go back to Sacramento. Who knows?

Re: Can't agree

The only legit indict is that if we get Wilcox & Joe Smith, we’re compelled to make them our FA signings. I think the offensive production of a deeper bench (Joe Smith) and a better offensive center for the remainder of this season (Wilcox) > defense from a hurt Tyson for the remainder of this season.

1) Our future is already tough, I’d rather have Chandler for the rest of this year as a Hornet & go from there.
Re: ???, okay so let’s get this straight because I think you’re completely misleading the turf toe condition. Nobody’s questioned players can recover from turf toe, the problem is they need an entire offseason to. So how is having a hobbled Tyson essentially rented for the rest of this year as opposed to Wilcox & Joe Smith rented for the duration of the season, a net-ben?

Barring a miraculous taker for Peja, & I think it’s almost laughable that someone would take him (think, his salary next year is $14,202,000, then it goes to $15,336,000), & the same goes for MoPete & Posey, I haven’t heard any suggestions within the scope of NBA reality that actually make these alternative scenarios plausible/how it’s going to be anyone but Tyson who is Bower’s moved man.

2) Plenty of other athletes besides Troy Glaus have had turf toe and recovered just fine
Re: That’s asinine. Taking the above into acct., recovery’s a moot point, I know of no recorded episode where a player who has been hampered in-season by turf toe has recovered during that season. AND it’s bad enough to make the Thunder rescind this trade)

Consequently you’re saying:

You’d rather have a severely hampered Tyson, hobbled enough to make OKC still nix this trade despite that Presti probably gets hot just thinking about him, essentially rented out for the rest of this season, rather than TWO healthy players who can probably run the pick and accelerate much more down the court on O.

Essentially have an injured Tyson for the duration of this season, then when he ultimately does heal in the offseason, trade him. Wait, how is this good again?

Okay name names and realistic possibilities: http://hoopshype.com/salaries/new_orleans.htm

How does this, now putting the franchise in the position of paying over $6 million in over the luxury level taxes, not make Shinn more miserly ex post facto? The important thing for the franchise was money first and foremost, and it should have been given the weak financial position the team has to compete today & in the future, that’s what should have been solved in order to make the team more competitive in realistic terms for the long-run, not naively clinging to Chandler “because the guys are tight with him”

by Abstract Capital on Feb 19, 2009 8:30 PM CST reply actions

You underestimate Chandler and overestimate his injury.

Wilcox and Smith can’t make a name for themselves on the Thunder. How would they make us contenders? Tyson will come back and this team will compete.

by m-W on Feb 20, 2009 10:41 AM CST reply actions

Is that a serious answer? Do you know who the Thunder are? They’re in the proverbial “youth movement” where they bench even beneficial older players in order to season their core youth for the future given this season, for them, is in the toilet. Why aren’t Wilcox & Joe Smith playing? Oh, I don’t know, maybe Jeff Green and Kevin Durant have something to do with it.

The Thunder also consider Collison part of their long-term plans, and they have to play Krstic w/whatever spare minutes are available since they’re paying him $5,000,000, $5,400,000, & $5,800,000 over the next 3 years.

“Tyson will come back and make this team compete.” – Where is the warrant to your arg? Can you even prove once that a player with his condition, bad enough to make OKC nix a trade for a player their GM gets the sweats over, comes back to perform competitively?

by Abstract Capital on Feb 20, 2009 2:41 PM CST reply actions

Can you prove that he won't?

It’s not necessary to be rude.

Umm

I’m trying to get a straight answer, all I’ve heard from you my fellow Hornets fan are fanciful scenarios and rude repartees. I would love some constructive criticism, however, I think it’s rude to just post ad homs like “puh-lease” and nothing else

Too many opinions, not enough facts. Sir.
