Game 71: Hornets @ Knicks Preview/Thread

72209072_medium

For starters, does this picture make anyone else sad? Feels like just last week that Allan Houston and Dell Curry were out on the courts. I feel old.

Anyway, if you haven't heard yet, the Ceiling Fan is out 1 to 2 weeks. Judging from the "stabilizing boot," it would appear that the 2 week side is more likely. In all probability, the 1-2 week assessment means he's done for the regular season. How effective he would be in a postseason series is anybody's guess. As for Peja... still no word on him. The last story indicated that he had shooting pain in his legs, stemming from his back. Doesn't take a doctor to realize something sounds very, very wrong there.

What does it all mean? Well, we can all but kiss homecourt advantage good bye. Between our horrific performances against other contenders, Houston and S.A. playing very good basketball, and our injuries, we're probably staring at a 6 or 7 seed. The first round matchup could still end up being anyone... San Antonio, Houston, Denver, Utah, Portland... even L.A. if we slump some more.

So it's a somber state of affairs the Hornets find themselves in, on the way to New York. The Knicks are coming off an embarassing loss, where an Al Harrington hanging-on-the-rim penalty cost them a probable win. Still, if Quentin Richardson and Wilson Chandler get hot against James Posey's "defense," things could become very rough.

I'll be watching this one solely to see Chris Paul do his thing. Hey, looks like it's 2005 all over again.

Yippe!

I got tickets tonight and am hoping for a good old fashioned blowout. If you see a crazy girl jumping up and yelling ‘CP3’ every time he hits a basket – that would be me.

by janepriceestrada on Mar 27, 2009 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

The bench:

Jumper that barely grazes rim, ball thrown out of bounds, airball. Typical.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 7:12 PM CDT reply actions

bench play good

with cp3 and west sitting most of the second, the bench keeping as in the game woohoo

by nikkoewan on Mar 27, 2009 7:24 PM CDT reply actions

Why?

That was just a freak moment. I think anybody would sprain their ankle if they stepped on the ref’s foot like that.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions

fire the ref!!

d’antoni shouted at the ref so the ref wanted to pay the no call by placing his foot on where hilton’s step. damn..

we may have inherited the C virus(clipper virus).

maybe this is good for next year. juju developing along with hilton.

by nikkoewan on Mar 27, 2009 7:31 PM CDT reply actions

As usual

The Hornets manage to end the quarter as horrifically as possible. Great 2nd otherwise…

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 7:35 PM CDT reply actions

Chris is going to have to be aggressive.

He’s being too hesitant to shoot that 3. He has to shoot it.

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 7:58 PM CDT reply actions

Have the tides turned

the starters the last two games aren’t playing so well and the bench has been.

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 8:01 PM CDT reply actions

SCARY SCARY MOMENT.

Devin Brown is a basketball God!

by chandlerfan6 on Mar 27, 2009 8:04 PM CDT reply actions

Wow.

Was that a hustle play from DX?

by m-W on Mar 27, 2009 8:06 PM CDT reply actions

So have we officially graduated

from the 2nd quarter collapse to the 3rd quarter collapse?

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:06 PM CDT reply actions

Every single guy

watching the ball on the fast break instead of defending. Sigh.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:07 PM CDT reply actions

I can't believe this team

I just don’t see the fire. Not even in CP. Have they just stopped mentally

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 8:08 PM CDT reply actions

Nah

I think CP will eventually take over at some point.

I hope.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I dont know

I just don’t know anymore. They just scored 14 points in the thirds. This is so hard to watch. This team is not this bad. My goodness.

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Aaaand we give up another quarter ending shot

Nicely coached Byron Scott. Great to see we’re putting so much effort into something that burns us every game.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:16 PM CDT reply actions

I can't blame BS. This is on the players.

they just are not in this game and its inexcusable.

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions

put the bench in

the starters aren’t doin a thing

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 8:18 PM CDT reply actions

they aren't helping each other

they are leaving each other out to dry. and its in their body language.

I cannot believe this. This is the knicks team that gave up 140 points to the damn clippers.

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Thats what I was just thinking

The Clippers… the clippers just beat this team, and dropped 140 on them.

by Caleb462 on Mar 27, 2009 8:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Ugh, are you serious?

That’s incredible. Makes this so much more painful.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions

With Chris Paul and David wEst on the floor

The best play we can come up with is MoPete shooting a guarded wing three with 17 on the shot clock.

We really don’t deserve to win tonight.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:20 PM CDT reply actions

CP still looks a little off

Same as last game… I wonder if fatigue (and perhaps frustration) is finally setting in?

I don’t know… but as ath just said, the offense we are running is inexplicable.

by Caleb462 on Mar 27, 2009 8:21 PM CDT reply actions

Thsi is all i can summize.

he is not even being as aggressive. All the beatings and bumping because they have horrid spacing is catching up.

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow

Paul took that three just to show up Nate Robinson. And missed horrible.

Come on Chris Paul. seriously.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:28 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah

But that one disappoints me in particular. Getting into a one-upping match against a random bench player? I expect more from CP.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Posey gets thrown out

WOW!!!!!

They are so mentally weak.

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 8:31 PM CDT reply actions

What the heck

West just randomly hit LEe on the back b/c he was angry.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:36 PM CDT reply actions

Man everytime I renew my hope in the team...

And force myself to believe that its all about injuries, a game like this comes along..

All the promise this season once held… it just keeps getting sucked away.

by Caleb462 on Mar 27, 2009 8:37 PM CDT reply actions

Maybe

When/If Chandler/Peja come back, something happens. But I’m not holding my breath.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

That chance is still there… and thats really the only hope left.

by Caleb462 on Mar 27, 2009 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Pretty much.

Devin Brown is a basketball God!

by chandlerfan6 on Mar 27, 2009 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Fact is, no Hilton tonight in second half

Coincidence? I don’t think so. They got all their points penetrating.

by m-W on Mar 27, 2009 8:42 PM CDT reply actions

Is it his ankle?

Devin Brown is a basketball God!

by chandlerfan6 on Mar 27, 2009 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess

Did anyone see him come back out after he went to the locker room?

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmm

Either way, those lefty hooks were sooo sweet. Loved them.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I should add

I am finally aboard the Hilton Wagon after many years of Hilton bashing. mW, you are a prophet.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

His offensive game has become pretty nice, and his rebounding seems to be slowly improving

Its too bad the Hornets dont possess some sort of advanced alien technology that could merge the offensive skillset of Hilton with the defensive skills of Chandler.

by Caleb462 on Mar 27, 2009 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point

Totally forgot aobut that. Hilton was playing huge on both ends tonight.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Higher turnover rate, lower defensive rebounding, lower floor percentages I’d say are the three biggest.

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions

basically

the team has regressed. Injuries are a factor but the way they have declined is shocking.

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah nailed it

Chandler’s regressed, DX has regressed… even though Butler has stepped up, he’s basically turned into Mo of last year. Not much of a net gain. Other than that, JuJu has been worse (or at least last time I checked the stats), Daniels and Pargo cancel each other more or less… and yeah…

by Rohan on Mar 27, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it mostly is injuries, to an extent

But unlike other teams they’ve shown an inability to cope with injuries. Partly its depth issues, we don’t have the players to properly cope… but theres also been a good deal of underachieving going on – nights like tonight are a perfect example.

by Caleb462 on Mar 27, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

YES.

That. I keep getting so mad looking at other injured teams overcoming, while we fail because of things like lack of execution.

It doesn’t take a basketball scholar to see the Knicks made an adjustment at the half and went to the basket, dumping it to David Lee every time. In the 1st half they were hanging out on the perimeter. The point is even the KNICKS can adjust and we can’t? BS.

No, seriously. BS. Byron? Hello? Alive?

Unbelievable

The hornets got swept by the Bulls and the Knicks in 2008-2009

Wow

by RonD on Mar 27, 2009 8:56 PM CDT reply actions

I just said that

Actually, showing my lack of faith, I said it with about 5:00 to go in the 4th.

by ticktock6 on Mar 27, 2009 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I just keep waiting for them to get it together

And be the team from last year, but they aren’t. Here’s an idea. How about this year we ACTUALLY DRAFT? Fresh blood and energy.

http://hornetshype.com

by ticktock6 on Mar 27, 2009 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I've been feeling that same way all season

“Well, they lost tonight, but its going to all come together soon.”

I do believe I’ve had that thought about… well 27 times now at the very least. Multiply that a few times

by Caleb462 on Mar 27, 2009 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I really want the playoffs to get here

Because right now watching the Hornets is not really fun anymore…

by Caleb462 on Mar 27, 2009 9:02 PM CDT reply actions

In fact...

I’m halway convinced that the most exciting scenario would be one in which the Hornets fall to the 8 seed, but have Chandler and Peja back, and meet the Lakers in the first round and take them to 7 games.

by Caleb462 on Mar 27, 2009 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm in.

P.S. the Knicks prize for winning tonight? Another losing season. Suck it Krypto-Nate.

by m-W on Mar 27, 2009 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Aghhh!

The only Hornets game I will see live all year. Boo. They looked totally unfocused. Offense and defense were all over the place. And 4 techs and an ejection in one game – thats sloppy play on both sides.
