Draft Day Open Thread
It sounds like something could be coming. I'll post updates in this story:
11:31 EST- Bright Side of the Sun: "The word from a few places that haven't yet risen to more prominent sources is that the Suns want to now trade Wallace's contract to the New Orleans Hornets for Tyson Chandler."
4:32 EST- Real GM: "While there is no truth to the possibility of Amare Stoudemire being moved to Houston in a package for Tracy McGrady, Ben Wallace could be flipped to New Orleans for Tyson Chandler.
Wallace is an expiring $14 million contract that could also provide the Suns more immediate financial relief with a buyout (although he would still count as a $14 million salary for luxury tax purposes). Chandler's contract goes into the 2010-11 season at about $13 million."
UPDATE: Merging this into the Open Draft Thread.
5:42 EST- ESPN: Not an update per se, but there's a lot of news that Ben Wallace will be retiring. His quote from May: "Nothing's definite, but there's a strong possibility that this was my last season." So if a deal does get done, a buyout will probably be performed immediately. Very raw figures here, but the Hornets would cut about 12 million in cap, bringing them to ~64 million total.
5:46 EST- Yahoo!: "Sources say that Louisville’s Terrence Williams is back in the mix with the Nets at No. 11. He’s on the short list with North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough and Duke’s Gerald Henderson." NJ was one of three majorly rumored destinations for DeJuan Blair. With Carter gone, it looks more and more like they'll gamble on Williams.
5:59 EST- Hoopsworld: "Nobody from the Eric Maynor camp is expecting him to be on board past the 20's. The Indiana Pacers are considering him at 13, but could also go with either Brandon Jennings or Ty Lawson. It's unexpected for Maynor to fall past 19 to the Atlanta Hawks, unless they opt for Jeff Teague instead."
6:01 EST- According to a person in the know, Chandler to Suns would probably only go down if the Suns' 14 overall pick were included. Phoenix doesn't appear likely to include that, given their recent history of trading away picks that turned into terrific players.
6:21 EST- Of course, right after I do a post about three new possibilities, Chad Ford brings up a new one. He has BJ Mullens slotted into the 21st spot in his latest mock. Quick thoughts on Mullens: awful passer, loses the ball a ton, mediocre rebounder, runs the floor, good touch around the hoop, good size for getting position. He'd def be a project pick... not as bad as a lot of Hornets fans are making out to be though.
6:31 EST- RealGM: Amare to Golden State. No word on the players involved, but it seems a done deal.
7:54- News again that Chandler talks are back on. PHX-NOH to swap picks if it happens.

why not trade tyson and change to rockets for mcgrady? putting aside the fact that houston is a divisional rival, it could work out nicely for both teams
Contracts don't match
HOU would ahve to take back dead weight like Daniels, etc which they might not do.
Something that's not been addressed...
Given Tyson’s trade history (rescinded by OKC), has Phoenix even examined Tyson?
How the heck are they going to make a trade like this that is basically “un-revokable” signt unseen?
They are really going to give away an expiring for Tyson and -8 draft slots? How do they have enough confidence in his health to pull the trigger on this?
Looks like Tyson not going anywhere
GSW rumored to have picked Stephen Curry for PHX.
I think this is the consummation of the Amar’e deal.
I hate how in the NBA Draft the pick could be traded out from under you 5, 15, 35 minutes later.
It takes a lot of drama out of the Draft because the picks don’t necessarily mean anything. Any idea why the NBA does it this way? I prefer the NFL method of announcing the trades first and having the teams pick for themselves.
Makes things a lot more interesting and dramatic. Very rare is the “after the fact” trade in the NFL. Last high profile one was Eli Manning/Phillip Rivers.
Honestly I want any of the best remaining PG’s.
PG’s are so safe! I don’t want us reaching on a project or an injury risk. CP3’s lack of a backup was a huge problem, and drafting a PG solves that immediately. PLUS it saves us from having to spend $3MM or whatever on Pargo.
I know the flip argument is that if we re-sign Pargo we might also have a crack at his bro. as an UDFA AND we could then use our pick on a PF or SG….. But you know that PF isn’t really going to pan out at 21. The odds are about 10%.
So much for Lawson...
Still so many great PG’s left though.
Maynor, Teague, Collison.
That person on HR who dropped Collison seemed pretty legit.
Wow
I’m drunk – I didn’t even catch that that was the T-Wolves 3rd PG lol.
So it sounds like they’re keeping the first 2 though.
Nah I like Portland too. I much prefer them to the Lakers. Top fans in the NBA and a great, fun young team.
It fills a need. He’s a solid PG and can D up.
I’m not thrilled but I’m content. Hopefully no Pargo now. I hate Pargo.

WTF – Is that thing left over from 2003?
Get an updated logo / font, people.
A week ago we thought there was a great chance the Horents wouldn’t even keep this pick.
Let’s just be happy that they didn’t embarrass and demoralize us again by sellling the pick.
Collison
Yuck…New Orleans has plenty of holes so they go with a guy who will barely get any time on the court considering CP3 is ahead of him?
Blair offered size while Young had athleticism…
I'm no commie, but the Reds shall be the best again!
Be back later with a Collison post
Intial Analysis: Great pick. I’ll have more later… but rest assured it’s not gonna be spin. Last thing I want to do is brag about the front office after the horrible missteps they’ve made.
Backing up CP3 adequately is HUGE. It’s the reason why we lost to the Spurs in the playoffs 2 years ago.
If any part of you believes that Tyson can come back healthy this is the right pick. It might be the right pick anyway.
I hope to God we don’t dump Tyson now. I want to see if we can’t recapture some 2007 magic. Remember, we were 2nd best in the West last year until West/Tyson went down.
Also
We conceivably save $3MM now since we don’t HAVE to sign Pargo.
We can trade Daniels and save/swap another $6MM.
It’s a decent pick. Better than reaching for Mullens for sure.
We traded future 2nd rounders to Miami for Marcus Thornton
You know what, I could care less. But it is the first glimpse I’ve seen of the Hornets seriously showing an understanding of their market. Getting the LSU kid is crafty and will go a long way. I like it. Non guaranteed and now we get 2 picks out of a draft in which we had one. And how is this kid going to play for his hometown kid?
Man, it’s so cheesy, but they just gave this kid his dream. Why not? I like it.

ha, hometown team
Not “kid”. Me typing redundant things. Ask me sometime about the random old dude making me do jager shots at the draft party

TT6, what's this I hear
about some random old dude making you do jager shots at the draft party?
As far as the draft goes, I’d say two first round-caliber players in a year in which we only had one pick is pretty good. I’d be lying if I said part of me didn’t wish we had picked up Blair, but if we can move Daniels/Butler and get a back-up big (doesn’t look like SAS will be bringing Gooden back, we could probably get him for a pittance), then I think this offseason will have been a success.
