Hornets Release Jannero Pargo
So, while I was lazily avoiding writing anything about anything composing a brilliant piece analyzing the respective merits and pitfalls of The General's return, it turns out the General won't be returning at all. Via the Times-Picayune:
The Hornets released backup combo guard Jannero Pargo on Tuesday. Team officials said Pargo's surgically repaired knee wasn't progressing quickly enough.
New Orleans signed Pargo to the veteran's minimum, so it's unclear whether his ~900,000 contract remains on our books. Normally, a released player's salary would count against the cap, but I'm assuming Pargo's contract was at least somewhat provisional.
In any case, this is the third strange injury case New Orleans has dealt with this offseason (joining Bill Green and Luther Head). Green is still the presumptive backup PG favorite, and PMB and Mustafa Shakur appear that much more likely to make the final roster.

Called It
I feel so smart now. Anyways, this whole situation with the knee injuries lately with the Hornets is very puzzling. As you mentioned, that’s three players now. I really like Pargo and wish he would have made the team, but I always felt he was there as insurance. Maybe the team feels confident in what they’ve seen from Shakur? Or at least confident enough to let him make the final roster.
Either way, it’s just good to come to this page and have something to talk about.

Yeah haha
My bad, got dry there for a while. Hopefully from here on out, we’re full steam ahead into the season.
I received a pre-release copy of Basketball Prospectus the other day, and the M. Shakur projection is quite decent. I guess it draws on historical DLeague → NBA jumps, and Shakur did do really, really well in the DLeague last season.
The Dry Spell Is Understood
Wasn’t a ton of noteworthy stuff to speak on.
I will say that I really liked Pargo on the team, but the team isn’t any worse because of him not making it. But this is now the second straight offseason where he basically spent the summer training with the team only to end up somewhere else by the time the season started. They just didn’t sign him last season and this year the knee was bothering him. It’ll be interesting to see if another team picks Pargo up.

Yuck As In
We should accept his 35% shooting because he’s one of CP3’s best friends? Didn’t Cleveland take on a lot of bad players on the team simply because they were good friends with LeBron?

They go to intensive trainings and on those trainings anybody’s weak-point would show. I guess with the case of Pargo, he too is infected with bad luck the whole team is suffering.

My initial reaction
is suprise. I kind of figured Pargo would be the backup PG. No idea what to think now.

Patty Mills
Wondering if the Hornets now land him soon….

Pargo
Thanks for the update.
Most teams other than the Hornets would have simply passed on Pargo. At this point, it is unclear whether he has anything left in the tank after the injuries and everything. Last season he put up poorish stats on a mediocre team. He had some uses though in the past, as a streaky shooting specialist bringing instant offense from the point guard position, albeit with horrifying overall efficiency.
If I recall correctly, he played like a star, netting 30 or so in the Hornets last playoff game of importance 2 years ago against the Spurs. I’d have to double check that now, however.
Wonder what Jeremy’s brother is up to and whether he is honing his skills as a professional enough to be considered for an NBA roster.
