TV or Live?

SBNation and Samsung have collaborated on an advertising scheme where, if bloggers write three posts on "technology," we get kicked a little cash. Full disclosure: I like cash.

Last week, I wanted to know how you, intrepid Hornet fans, liked to watch the Hornets. Local TV seemed to be the majority answer with League Pass, expectedly, the second most common option.

Today, a different poll: which sport is most conducive to technology?

The televised vs. live debate swings either way on different sports. Pro football is considered a TV sport; even though certain venues enhance the game through their fans, atmosphere, etc, the statistics indicate that the NFL has become an absolutely dominant TV sport. I feel like baseball is on the other end of the spectrum. The slow pace of the game- brought on by breaks in between pitches, not much "action" on the field- can cause boredom via the television set. However, I think I enjoy live baseball more than any other live sport. The laid back rhythm and the ability to casually converse with surrounding fans are things I enjoy, in person.

Then there's the NHL. I've never been to a hockey game, but as people often say, hockey loses more in the live to TV translation than perhaps any other sport. The intensity of the players, the viciousness of the hits, and most importantly, the motion of the puck, are better enjoyed in person.

So, the question. Assuming they both cost you the same, would you rather watch an NBA game or TV (let's say good resolution, etc) or in person (let's say the middle rows, lower level)?

TV

I am a chunky fella and whoever designed the seats at the N.O. Arena did not intend for fatties to attend games because me going into a seat is like squeezing a water ballon into a pinhole. Havent been to other arenas but most of the time its the same deal..so…TV.

Live

If they cost the same, I’ve never been to N.O. Arena but watching someone play live is always better than TV. That being said watching it on TV isn’t all that bad, but if I had to choose Live sport.

If it’s cold or I don’t feel like going to a game (let’s just say here in Australia) then I’ll stay home and watch it.

Live....

I’ve been to a zillion NBA games…they are more fun live with good seats , however ; the price for good seats has gone out of control.

Live is way better

You can see the entire play developing, not just what the TV producer wants to show you.

I’d put Basketball in the middle of NFL and MLB. Watching it on TV (or my case the internet) is really good today, but it will never beat the Live experience. As m-W stated, seeing an entire play develope and feeling the energy of the crowd ebb and flow is unbeatable. To yell in excitement when your team scores, blocks a shot or runs a fastbreak is like a little infusion of drugs time and time again.

Live Is SO Much Better

Number one: you don’t have to listen to AWFUL announcers (NBA announcers are THE WORST!).

But the game in general is so much fun, live. The NFL is actually much better to watch on television, but the NBA is so much better to watch live. Someone mentioned here that the price for tickets has gone out of control and they’re completely right. However, I’ve seen ticket prices for the New Orleans Arena. Hornets tickets are amongst the lowest priced in the entire league. Everytime I go back home to Louisiana (born and raised in the Ponchatoula/Hammond area), I make an effort to go and watch at least one game there. I can get lower level seating basically last minute for about 65 bucks. That’s a steal.

Overall, though, they’re completely right that tickets just cost a lot. My girlfriend is a big Lakers fan (aren’t most casual fans?) and I tried to get her some tickets to the Lakers and Spurs game here in town but they raise the prices by at least 40 bucks for that game. It’s absurd.

Ummmm back to the question. Yeah, live is much better.

Another vote for.....LIVE

With TV, you are dependent on either the good cameramen and/or analysts in giving you the full story. What I mean by this is it is sometimes hard to get a true feel of emotions, mood and a player’s overall vibe. In real life, you can zero in on the bench’s attitude, or a specific position battle off the ball, whatever.
