The Cavalier Outlook

For months now, the Cavaliers' players, their coaches, and their fans have been saying all the right things. Last year was last year. The LeBron James era is over. This is a new team, a new regime, and LeBron James is as much an artifact of franchise history as Craig Ehlo or Brad Daugherty. And maybe they all do really believe it. After all, Byron Scott and other new additions to the franchise have no reason to concern themselves with what LeBron James did or did not bring to the team. But from a fan perspective, it's harder for me to contextualize it. If the best basketball player in the world quit my team on national TV, I'd probably have a hard time shaking it off like it was nothing.

In any case, here we are. Cleveland has outperformed expectations thus far. They stand firmly in the thick of the Eastern playoff chase. It's early yet, but it doesn't seem outlandish that they could beat out teams like the Nets, Knicks, or Cats to that 8th seed. Surprisingly, they're playing faster basketball (92.5 possessions a night) under Byron Scott than we are (90.5 possessions a night) under Monty Williams.

They're not particularly good at anything, but they don't turn the ball over, and they don't foul often. If you wind back the clock a little, you might recall that those are two of the traits Byron Scott established his New Orleans success upon.

Mo Williams and Andy Varejao are both game time decisions for tonight. As you can see above, I give the edge at every position on the floor to the Hornets. If the bench can keep things tidy, we optimally won't see Chris Paul in the fourth quarter tonight.

Notes:

  • This is our final home game before a west coast road swing. We'll visit Sacramento, the Clippers, the Jazz, and the Blazers over the course of the next week.
  • J.J. Hickson's role in the Cleveland offense continues to expand. If you remember back to last trade deadline, Hickson was the hang-up in a potential Amar'e to Cleveland deal.
  • Hornet lead assistant Mike Malone was an assistant coach at Cleveland from 2005-2010. I'll be posting an interview I did with Coach Malone soon.
  • Other connections: Ryan Hollins was a former teammate of both Emeka Okafor (CHA) and Trevor Ariza (UCLA). Monty Williams and Anthony Parker were teammates on the 1999-2000 Orlando Magic.
  • It's been almost exactly nine months since Marcus Thornton scored 37 points against the Cavs, including 23 in the second quarter alone. For tonight, he's listed as the following: "Marcus Thornton (resolving contusion - right quadriceps) is probable." Pretty sure he's still inactive though.

Do I Even Need To Say It?

I have to work tonight. I hate my job.

On a game related note, this game kind of worries me a bit. With a really tough schedule coming up, just finishing off that interesting little mini series with Dallas and with the Byron Scott returning distraction, this could be a bit of a trap game for the Hornets all things considered. I know I feel like every game could be a trap game, but this one really could be. As you said, if the Hornets come out and play their game, they should win it handily and it’s hugely beneficial if the team finds a way to get the starters some early rest before heading out for the road trip.

I hope the players play well and that they take care of business. But since I won’t be able to do it, I hope you guys call pull them through tonight.

Go Hornets!!

It sounds like bitch work but it’s actually pretty tough. At least when you have to close and you work with a bunch of incompetent, immature fools.

For once

I actually don’t feel like its a trap game. Monty has done a good job of getting our team ready most nights plus the players I’m sure won’t want to lose to Scott.

I used to really dislike the Cavs

But now… without Lebron, they are a lot easier to root for. Plus I still have some respect for Scott. I soured on him because of the Buckets/Dimes fiasco…. but as Rohan pointed out in his post, there is still a lot to like about him.

Of course I hope we destroy them tonight.

I didn’t realize how much Jason smith looks like Ryan Bowen from afar until today.

Hmm... not a great quarter

Can’t allow a team to go 4-8 from three in the first quarter. And the Cavs are playing effective D on everyone but West right now.

I never thought of basketball as a 'class' game.

I don’t know what that means in this context.

any player that refuses to give the ball to Paul and gets a layup instead. Too much deference to CP has been an issue in the past… Belinelli does what he wants, and he’s efficient.

I can't watch the game because I don't use Cox

But looking at the stat. line/box score, all I can see is Byron Scott:

Most productive player: Antawn Jamison.

Players with more PT than Jamison: Joey Graham, Jamario Moon, JJ Hickson, and about to be Ryan Hollins.

I’m so happy for two clear reasons: 1) Hornets win! 2) No more unforgivable, strategically incomprehensible, tactically stubborn, Byron Scott head-game obstinacy. Go Monty!

The Celtics-Thunder game was bizarre

Both teams had exactly two made field goals in the fourth quarter. Oklahoma didn’t get one in the last ten minutes of the game.,. and yet they still managed to eke out a win.\

Hornets seem to be doing alright, although everytime I glance at the Yahoo game commentary we seem to be missing a three pointer.
