Hornets 108, Cavaliers 101: New Orleans Struggles Defensively, Picks Up Moral Loss
The Hornets stumbled in the second half to let Byron Scott's Cavaliers back into the game, but ultimately, their dominant second quarter was enough to see them through.
It's not often that you see a team get outscored in three quarters and still pull out a comfortable win. But it's equally infrequent to see a 21 point differential in a single quarter either. And luckily, we had David West to help us pull it out at the end. In any case, we definitely didn't bring it for 48 minutes in this game.
Straight to the bullets today:
- Our biggest downfall was perimeter and jump shot defense. The overall differential between our threes and their threes wasn't huge, but we allowed them way too many open looks from beyond the arc. Cleveland didn't have nearly the ball movement Dallas showed, but our defense played slow and without energy for long stretches.
- As hilarious as the Belinelli foul call on Antawn Jamison was, we deserved to lose the 100 point streak. West and Okafor did fine defensively, but the real culprit was perimeter defense.
- Chris Paul finished with 15, 10, 6, and 4, but really didn't impact the game in the second half. After dominating fourth quarters through the first few games, the trend has reversed this past week.
- There are two primary ways in which David West's big scoring games happen. The first type is when the Chris Paul-David West pick and roll game is working, and Paul feeds West with jumper after jumper. The second type is when David West just takes his defensive match-up to school on the block. That's what happened tonight. Byron Scott really didn't have anyone that could defend West, and DX made them pay.
- Quincy Pondexter really does look like an NBA player. He's confident offensively and defensively, and I hope we can start getting him the ball more frequently. On the flip side, Peja Stojakovic essentially chucked the ball up wildly tonight, finishing 1 for 7. Rounding out the small forwards, Trevor Ariza continued his abysmal start on the offensive side. He went 3 for 12 from the field and 1 for 5 from the free throw line.
- Jason Smith had a poor game tonight, too. He looked lost on defense, set poor screens (including one moving), and missed his shots. Let's hope it's a one game blip. Willie Green and Jerryd Bayless each contributed 8 points (though Green took 9 shots and Bayless just 6)

good take ro!
You can start by looking at us getting beaten on the boards….
In the second half we stepped off of their throats , and that doesn’t sit well with my ‘no mercy’ attitude. I hope we lose that complacency before hitting the road….the road sure isn’t the place for it.
Ehhh
I know it wasn’t a pretty win, but who cares? I understand we all want style points as a fan and it would have been nice to rest everyone, but I’ll take a W any night of the week. Moral victories are for bad teams. They didn’t play their best and they let the team into the game, but that happens over the course of an 82 game stretch. When it comes so easy in one quarter, it’s hard to continue to take them seriously for the other two quarters. I know that sounds foolish, but I played basketball. I’m sure most of you did. It does happen.
I’ll have to watch the game later and check it out but I wouldn’t be so negative after a W. At all.

Not really too negative @ 10-1....
….and that is EXACTLY what happened. The complacency that creeps in when you are beating the sheet out of somebody. Just need to clean up the perimeter D a little , and not step off the throat. You’re right MWK , it is unfortunately human nature when it comes too easy. BTW , you gonna be there 12/5 ??
Of Course
Bought both tickets as soon as they were available. It’s why I’m having to work so much lol. But yeah I’ll be there. Haven’t missed a game since I moved out here in 2002.
I don’t know if anyone else here remembers, but my first game here the Hornets beat the Spurs (who were the defending champs at the time) without Baron Davis, David Wesley or Jamal Mashburn. Darrell Armstrong had a career high 35 and they came back from 18 down in the 3rd quarter and won in San Antonio. Now I’ve only seen two wins here in San Antonio since then (and some tough losses. Including the one where Manu slammed all over poor Hilton Armstrong) but that first one was great.

I got some seats in section 208....
…. center court , but upper level. I just don’t have the budget this year that I’ve had in the years past. I really would have liked it better if our games vs SA would have come later in the season , because I could’ve splurged more(just paid off my car). I remember well the Manu punk of Hilton.

10-1 is insane given the uncertainty coming into the season!
The turnaround over a single summer without overhauling the roster at all (coaching change, swapping collison for ariza) has been a delight to watch.
