Marcus Marcus Where for art thou? Marcus

I looked forward to the debut of Jarrett Jack when the Hornets played the Clippers. I seemed to be one of the few who disliked the trade and was hoping my skepticism wasn't justified.  The Hornets second unit had become stagnant of late and management thought Jack could be the catalyst to get them back to early season success. He had a good game stat wise with 12 points, 4 assists in 16 minutes. But he looked to me to be a duplicate of Willie Greene.  The second unit overall had looked no better.

As the game progressed I was certain it would go to the wire.  The Clipper announcer remarked there was no Stojakovic to shoot away at the end.  The Hornets went to David West time and again. If David wasn't taking the shot Chris Paul would try himself. Very late in the game a pass to West went awry and the Hornets lost a close one.  Bellinelli was free in the corner but his 2-9 three point shooting apparently had left a sour taste in Paul's mouth.

After watching tonight's Oklahoma City game I see the same problems repeating itself again and again.  When the Hornets are close in the fourth West and Paul are pressured.  Ariza, nor Bellinelli, nor Okafor are scorers.  Bellinelli is only effective in the first quarter when he doesn't have the pressure and has open shots.  Ariza is money when the shot clock is falling and has to shoot a three but he too has trouble putting the ball on the ground and taking it to the hole.

I hated the Peja deal because everyone knows either Paul or West now have to take the late game shot. Like or hate his defense, Peja is money at the foul and three point lines in the fourth quarter. He is highly respected and must be considered when creating a defense.  The Hornets will struggle unless they find a third scorer that will be highly thought of in the last period.

Marcus Thornton is the only player on the current roster that can fit the bill.  He is a scorer, a three point shooter and a good foul shooter.  My suggestion is to start Bellinelli but play Marcus like last year and let him finish the game as the 2 guard.  If we don't do this the losses will keep piling up and we'll lose a valuable asset at seasons end, because I don't think he would want to come back being used the way he has been.  What does everyone else think?

Agreed

While Beli is great at hitting open shots, Marcus presents a much greater threat in terms of creating shots. When defenses are keying on West and CP late in games, it’s nice to have that option of a third guy that can create a shot for himself.

Yep, preaching to the choir.

Playoff teams need more than 2 shot creators on their team in order to score against quality defenses.

The Hornets will be able to get away with playing pretty good offense with good ball movement and a deep bench, but as soon as they play defenses that have proper rotations then they will need players that can break their man down off of the dribble.

Marcus can do that, especially because he will be operating in a situation in which he is getting the ball off of a double team of Paul or West. His ability to both shoot, and attack the rim for a score/ foul is really valuable, and I believe he needs to be getting Green’s minutes once he shows the willingness to play the type of d that the Hornets need him to paly.

Made the same observation in yesterday's game thread

Need to give Thornton run pure and simple or at least make another roster move to bring in a dynamic wing scorer. Would add an enormous dimension to this team opening the middle back up for Okafor and allow West to operate with fewer double teams.

Dis-agree

Trade idea: Marcus Thornton and Quincy Pondexter to SAC for Jason Thompson, whom the Kings are trying to get rid of (latest they tried to trade him to ATL for Jeff Teague)

Too steep

two promising wings for a black hole/foul-maligned/not good defender? Nah…

you could have just said that you really hate jason thompson

he’s woefully (under and poorly)used, how do you qualify that statement (that he’s a black hole of a big man)?

Ooops

my bad! I had Carl Landry on my mind as well after reading a few excerpts regarding both players. Guess they morphed into 1 as I quickly typed that this morning, pressed for time. Yeah, you’re absolutely right, Thompson isn’t a black hole just really picks up way too many fouls. Landry is the Hole who definitely isn’t a good defender.

However, I still feel the two wings is pretty steep. Perhaps just 1 of them and somebody else? Besides, I doubt the Kings want any more wings considering their current situation. What that team really needs is a nice penetrating PG.

Really good points about that D-West is now getting too many looks

The offense hasn’t adjusted yet, which is kinda surprising since Peja hardly played when he was with us this year. Here’s hoping the offense diversifies & Mr. West remembers to pass on his bad days
