Terrible, Vaguely Relevant Game Pun
Houston, We Don't Have Liftoff
The Rocket Outlook
After a very strong opening half against the defending champion Lakers to start the season, things have fallen apart a bit for Houston. They went on to be outscored by L.A. 61-48 in the second half, visited Golden State only to have another 132 dropped on their defense, and rounded it off with a 13 point home loss to a Denver Nuggets team on the tail end of a road back-to-back. Kyle Lowry, one of the team's best perimeter defenders, returned to action against Denver and figures to get time on Chris Paul. Meanwhile, Yao Ming is on a strict 24 minute-a-night limit and apparently won't play in back-to-backs. As much as they struggled in the season's opening week, Houston will be well-rested and hungry for their first win of the year.
Defensive Woes
It's weird to associate Houston with mediocre defense. But for the second consecutive year, it's looking more and more like that will indeed be the case. The perimeter D has been especially sieve-like. It'll be interesting to see who they stick on CP3; again, I'd anticipate a healthy Lowry getting extended minutes. Don't be surprised if Marco Belinelli takes up the powerful driving cudgel once again, as we saw on opening night.
Through 3 games, the Rockets have allowed 116.1 points per possession. Oddly enough, they've played decent field goal defense and haven't gone overboard with fouling either. Their two shortcomings have been defensive rebounding and a total inability to force turnovers. While New Orleans isn't necessarily a turnover prone team, the second unit has shown a tendency to cough it up. Additionally, the Hornets have been one of the league's worst offensive rebounding teams thus far. In a nutshell, the Hornets' offense may not be in position to take advantage of Houston's two largest flaws thus far.
Subplots
- Trevor Ariza returns to Houston, mere months after the team unceremoniously dumped him and his contract. Ariza hasn't exactly lit it up on the offensive end, but he has been superb defensively. He should get the assignment on one my absolute favorite players in the league, Kevin Martin.
- Aaron Brooks didn't receive a contract extension offer by Monday's deadline. Given the dearth of overall offers, it's not that surprising. However, Memphis' Mike Conley did receive $45 million over five years, and they're not too dissimilar talent-wise.
- Houston has allowed 9 made 3-pt field goals a night, the league's third worst mark. Perhaps it's a chance for Marco Belinelli (and/or Peja Stojakovic) to finally get going from distance.
- In his last four trips to Houston, David West is averaging 31.5 points and 9.0 rebounds a game. The last time he visited, he scored 35 points on 16 of 20 shooting. If memory serves, Chuck Hayes was the primary defender on him in each of those games. Hayes will likely start on the bench tonight.

Damn
This game starts at the exact moment my class at college starts :( and my class lasts two and a half hours. I will be lucky to catch the end. I might have to just go on a media blackout and catch the replay on CST.
That's funny
I’ve got a midterm during the game too. Hopefully should be out some time in the second quarter though.
Should be 116.1 points per 100 possessions
116.1 points per possession would be very poor defense, indeed.
Great preview. Looking forward to tonight’s game. Hopefully with the Revenge factor and the Rockets Def. Ariza finds his shot from deep. If not I waiting to see Belinelli carry some of that great shooting from the preseason.
Going to be tough tonight
HOU lost by 2 to Lakers and 4 to the Warriors (where Ellis was crazy sick on fire!) Admittedly, no idea what happened in their home opener against the Nuggets but expect the opposite amount of effort by this experienced Adelman group.
We’re likely going to need someone to be special outside of CP3 and West and would be sweet to see Ariza show up his former team. Wouldn’t be a bad time for Bayless to make his mark as a Hornet either.
This game is going to be tough....
….not that any SW foe is easy nowadays , but
Houston isn’t going 0-4 without a fight. I would like to see Bayless go off. It certainly would be a good time for it. I play ball with a lot of Rocket tards so I really don’t want to have to listen to their stuff.
And Kevin Martin OP??? :yack:
Worst looking shot since the days of Jamal ‘silk’ Wilkes IMO. How it ever finds net is a pure mystery of science.

Should Be Good
Have to work again. Damn my job.
But anyways, this game should be good. The game’s in Houston, Houston’s desperate for a run, and the Hornets are playing solid ball. Don’t take into account that the Hornets are just as rested as Houston. There’s no excuse to come in there and lay an egg tonight. And, unless the Rockets plan on going really small, they’ll have to sacrifice either Aaron Brooks, Kevin Martin or Kyle Lowry. They’re either giving up scoring or defense tonight. The Hornets need to take advantage of that. Here’s hoping that the good start continues tonight.
"You play to win the game."
C'mon Okafor....
I hope Aaron Gray plays tonight. When Okafor has a taller defender on him, he don’t try to score or jump for rebounds. Chris Paul, D West, Thornton & hopefully Peja or Bellineli will have to win it.
Finally Correctly Guessed my Password
Going into Houston to play a 0-3 team at home which is averaging 110 pts. a game should be a real test for the new “Bee-Fense”. Plus Houston is not exactly playing like a 0-3 team , and now with Yao (for his 28 min. ) they have an un guard-able big , a true scorer at the two , Scola playing like a monster after the worlds at the 4 ( which should be a great battle between two great offense PF’s both with less than great defensive records ) a scoring point guard and multiple 3 pt shooters , not to mention the fact that Houston runs two distinct offense with and without Yao , the offense showcasing Brad Miller at the 5 runs the floor more and runs a flex in the halfcourt with Miller distributing out of the high post … should be a good test for the Hornets defensively, and if we can keep them under 100 our chances look good

Personally
I think it’s messed up. Most of the arguments I’ve seen defending it say that Charlie V shouldn’t have taken it to Twitter or that he shouldn’t have let it get in his head or that KG outplayed him so it clearly worked.
All of those things just deflect the attention off of KG’s comments. Sure, trash talk is an integral component of basketball, but I’m not sure KG making fun of an entire demographic (of anyone, let alone cancer patients) is “trash talk” as much as it is ignorant.
I tend to have a pretty black sense of humor myself
And I sort of have an “anything goes” philosophy when it comes to joking around… but it all depends on context. A cancer joke might not be inappropriate between a couple of friends, both of whom know that its a joke… but outside of that context – ie during an NBA game, it might be.
That said, I’m sure far worse things have been said during NBA games and they’ve just never been made public. Doesn’t make it cool, just pointing that out.
Ultimately I think it reinforces the image of KG as a bit of a jerk, but if he really did say it he should have owned up to it.
Good points
It reminds me a little bit about something Zach Galifiniakis once said about racism- it exists entirely as a relative phenomenon. If someone were equally horrible towards (or in Zach’s case, joked about) various races, they wouldn’t be a racist. They’d maybe be a horrible person to be around (or again in Zach’s case, perhaps funny), but not racist. Racism implies that you put someone up or pull someone down, relative to others.
And I think that applies a lot to what you say about “anything goes.” If you remove that context, maybe some terrible things come off as even worse. Making fun of cancer patients could fall under that “anything goes” context if KG was with his friends and everybody understood no harm, etc. In the context of saying it to a guy that’s obviously gone through a lot with alopecia, etc, I guess it’s another thing entirely. Sucks for KG that CV posted it for the entire NBA world to see, but I don’t feel that bad for him haha.

Jesus Jerryd Bayless sucks
I haven’t seen him do one good thing today or since he’s been here. Okay give him time blah blah, but goodness.
He’s not playing defense, looking terrible with his passes, missed an array of open shots.

Yeah give him time
But sometime’s it’s more than a system thing, his defense was pretty terrible just let guys blow by him. And open shots are open shots, gotta hit em.
Haven’t seen that “aggressiveness” towards the basket everyone talks about. I mean sure when Green and Thornton are on the floor it’s most likely the offense goes through them, but not all the time.

Not great.
Not doing anything on offense really. Defensively we’ve been solid, given up to many Points in the paint and what not. Ariza has done little, same as Belinelli, Bayless, Mbenga.

Indeed, and honestly...
we shouldn’t be that surprised. This is a solid roster – arguably equal to or better than the 07-08 roster. I just expected a longer gelling period, though it is still way early of course.
Come on Miami!
seems like a freebie game now. Really expected the Rockets to win and didn’t want the Hornets to possibly be 3-2 after Friday night.

Yeah, in the last seconds, he was fouled, and his brace on his left knee was knocked askew
Then he limped around for a while, but he looked like he was back to walking normally by the end of the game. We’ll have to keep an eye on it.
