Game 25: Hornets vs. Kings
Your Pregame Moment of Zen
The King Outlook
It's looking more and more like a lost season in Sacramento. Perhaps most people won't be surprised by that, but I really did envision a 30+ win season for the Kings. A variety of factors have conspired against them. The big one, of course, is the hurt/ineffective play of Tyreke Evans who, after creating 107 points per 100 possessions last season, is at an awful 94 this year (for reference, 2010-2011 Willie Green, 2009-2010 Devin Brown, and career Hilton Armstrong are/were at 95, 97, and 97 respectively).
At this point, Sacramento has lost 16 of their last 18 games and feature the conference's second worst point differential (-7.0).
Our Outlook
In any case, our horrific stretch of offensive incompetence certainly originated in Sacramento. On November 21st, a 10-1 Hornets team (that was averaging 93 points per night) scored just 75 points. New Orleans barely squeaked out with a four point victory. In subsequent days, the Hornets lost to the Clippers, got destroyed by Utah and San Antonio, and the rest is, erm, yeah.
What did Sacramento do so well that night? For one, they shut down Chris Paul (2 for 12 despite 14 assists). But more importantly, they completely denied the post. Donte Green and Samuel Dalembert finished with a combined seven blocks. Every Hornet attempt in the paint was aggressively challenged, and Emeka Okafor and David West simply couldn't find a way to respond (in the paint. DX eventually closed the game from range). Eventually, Sacramento's proclivity to cough the ball up cost them the game (Luther Head turned it over almost once every two possessions used, and the team finished with 21 turns in a 90 possession game).
Subplots
- The NOLA Business Council has apparently bought $30,000 worth of tickets for this game alone. So there may be a good number of people in seats for this one.
- Enter tonight's jersey contest here: ENTER. Sorry I've been slacking on the leaderboard a bit; new one out tomorrow.
- A random thing I tweeted tonight (follow me!!11) that will depress you: three of the league's ten least efficient players (minimum 15 games) in 2010-2011 play for the New Orleans Hornets. Can you guess them?

Come On, Man!
I’ll be at work tonight so the onus is on you all to pull the team through! The Hornets at home playing a bad team without its best player; if they don’t win this game it’s officially time to panic. I’m hoping for a good crowd tonight (they were pretty solid for the game against the Thunder) and hopefully the team carries over some of the good things that they did in the Heat game. I really hope the team takes advantage of their upcoming schedule and gets things back on track. But we don’t know what to expect with this team right now so we’ll just have to wait and see.
Go Hornets!
"You play to win the game."
BTW For Your Tweet Question
I’m going to guess…. Jarrett Jack, Marco Belinelli and ……… Trevor Ariza?
"You play to win the game."
badly pulled
something in my calf today playing tennis.
Going into lonh hot tub and if I do not join you guys tnight it’s cause I drowned!
It sucks being old and fat.
Not on CST
Game isnt on CST. They have the profile of CP3 on now then ESPNEWS, then a college basketball game or something. :( Ima have to watch Knicks/Celtics now.
Chris Paul continually picks up his dribble when instead he could look for something else
A couple of nice aggressive moves, but they are far and few between. He seems very confused as to what he wants. Defensively the Kings are just hitting a bunch of jumpers which in turn opened up that lane for Tyreke Evans for the “And-1.”

Oh boy
losing to the hapless Kings? Boxscore indicates much of the same to me and Evans playing is a bit of a surprise.
Giving up 29 points in the first quarter?
Good thing Monty is still sticking with the all defensive team…
Was talking with some friends
and if CP3 is 100% healthy, why isn’t he getting involved offensively? I get that he isn’t Rose/Westbrook but even Deron Williams and Nash both will shoot the ball if their team needs some hoops.
Already 2 long missed jumpers for Jack
in IND and TOR this guy took it to the hoop a ton, what’s up with just the jumpers? I’m really beginning to fear most of our ineptitude is Monty and his staffs doing…
protesting
sorry…
But I can’t emotionally take Monty.
The ONE game he does need Gray, he’s inactive.
So he brings along Andersen who is to small for this center.
Madness
its so simple
put marcus on the game and he will give some points
by saintsbrasil on Dec 15, 2010 7:52 PM CST up reply actions
if he keeps this up
he’s going on the inative list!
Cousins
is killing our guys. Good job for making Gray inactive and having Anderson trying to body him
The Jack trade
couldn’t be looking any worse right now. JJ looks like he should be retired, Bayless playing well and our team chemistry since the trade appears on the fritz. Might look back on it and consider it very pivotal…
Yep
if I’m the coach I yell at both of them, Paul with his fantastic efficiency better be hoisting them while Jack is on the shortest of leashes till he shows he’s coming out of this disgusting funk.
Kings commentators
just stated Chris Paul is very un-chris paul like
You can’t tell me there exists a hidden injury or hidden agenda…
is ro at the game?
don’t usually see him and Celeb462 out the same game
been there many times

First post
Hey what’s up! first post on this site but have been coming here along time. Real quick I hate the Bayless trade.
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils
It's REALLY sad
down 14 to a lousy team while we question why our stale offense continues to stink. More importantly, fans are being asked to come to games and businesses make donations to save the team. Doesn’t look good, does it?
really
do you see how many empty seats are all around the lower level!?
poor.
Well
I assume those seats have been sold – a number of season ticket owners own them but probably decided to skip out on tonights game since it’s the Kings and a Wednesday.
in chi town
those purchased tickets would have been given to business customers or anybody you need to give a favor to.
never let seats go unused!
Looking like a lottery team
in the 1st half. KIng’s commentators talking about how it’s their best half of basketball in the longest of times.
Here’s a conspiracy thought – the reason Monty doesn’t employ a transition game is because CP3 isn’t 100% right and therefore controlling every possession is our best chance.
please explain
Monty’s rotations and decisions on player active/inactive for games?
wouldn’t you activate gray for this type of game and center rather than the faster Miamai game?
I am really confused.
Can't
he keeps sticking to the same things we saw the first night. He is a rookie head coach, but he knows what adjustments are…
Trade Paul.
I think we should before the season i would have said hell no..I just dont feel that way anymore.
Oh and Thorton needs to play the whole second half oh and trade Green he has an expiring…I think.
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils
Don't want to jump to conclusions
but he is looking like a shell of his former self. I can’t remember the last time he dribbled around half the other team and elevated over somebody for a strong finish…
hey guys just take a look on this stats
http://hoopdata.com/player.aspx?name=Chris Paul
just take a look at his average of shots Attempts at the rim
2007-4.0
2008-3.9
2009-4.4
2011-1.7
something is wrong with him
Actually
I dont think anything is wrong with him. IF we were to trade him, I bet he would magically be Paul again.
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils
take a look in this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmZXGWYENkU
this is the CP we are not seeing the year
Agreed
and I’d expect all the beatwriters and national writers who watch the games to be all over this.
Nope
and our team has simply failed to give a damn tonight. To be down big at half to 1 of the rose when the city is rallying around keeping you, and you come out like this in the 3rd?
how do you guys watch this without wanting to throw your phone/remote through a window?
is there something wrong with me, or does watching this team play like this make you really angry?
No doubt
I’m about to call it a night so that I DON’T end up breaking something. Can’t help but feel our start to this year was a fluke….
after watching the last games
i think we are getting used to watch this type of display by the hornets
by saintsbrasil on Dec 15, 2010 8:39 PM CST up reply actions
this team is a freakin joke
they havent done shit in the last 3 weeks and that 11-1 start may end up being the only reason why they finish .500 this year.
I’m starting to dislike Monty as our coach does he realize that halftime is for making adjustments. That game we loss to San Antonio exposed them bigtime.
the game they were up by 17
at halftime and then loss by double digits.
This might be Thornton's breakout night
just hit a 3 and lord knows we need a ton of offense to catch up…
This
this is absolutely ridicules. Ariza needs to come of the bench, Ok needs to come off the bench belinilli is not a starter. Break this team up. I know they don’t want to because of the ownership issue but this team needs new faces NOW.
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils
How is this possible?
I literally don’t understand how a team can go from 11-1 to playing like this, down 20 at home to the Sacramento Kings. What happened to this team??? How can a team fall apart like this? Literally, I’m not sure the Hornets would win one game in a 4 game series against any single team in the NBA right now. The way they are playing right now, they would lose to a number of D League teams. How is this possible? Can someone explain this to me?
Down 10
after being down over 20?
Amazing how many games it took for Monty to make an adjustment, ie. PLAY BUCKETS!
The offense lives!
I’m picturing some horrible shambling zombie clawing its way out of the earth here (since it was basically a corpse earlier).
Thornton is playing.
Thornton is playing with Paul.
Thornton is getting shots.
He’s going for lay-ups, and not jumpers.
I consider these GOOD SIGNS.

Okay, maybe he's shooting a few jumpers...
(I’m “watching” the game via the Yahoo feed) …but at least its not his only shot I’mlookingatyouWillieGreen.

Would this work?
Starter
Paul
Thorton
Qpon
West
Smith/Anderson/Gray
That is plenty of offense to keep with any team
Bench
Jack
Belinelli I think Marco would play much better against back ups
Ariza would shut down the back up SF opponent for sure and be able to score a few
Smith/ anderson
OK he would be dominant against backup Centers
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils
Thornton should start IMO
but keep Ariza next to him. Beli and Green work well together off the bench. No way Okafor should get demoted though…
Nope
we have NO starting caliber Centers.

By going with Thornton
Monty might have just saved not only this game, not only the season, but NBA in New Orleans…
Now let’s finish this game right!
Have to give Green props
he’s played almost 20 minutes but has only taken 5 shots….proud of him deferring for a change…
Willie can oblige!

Then
maybe Anderson or Smith/// they don’t have to play alot of minutes because they start but at least OK would come in staggered with the other teams Center..

Jack just looks like he forgot how to shoot completely
Does anyone know if he has always had zero lift on every shot???
although Jack made the last jumper
can someone explain why he shot it again? Thornton meanwhile stuck on 10 shots

Thornton seems to have missed a couple of shots from close range
Good defence close to the hoop, or just bad luck with the shots?
#2 Sean Marks fan on the blogs
Would answer
but had to look away for a second as I added Thornton to all my fantasy teams. Monty HAS to go with the kid from now on…:)
Crazy
Before the game, I was thinking that the game our offense got off was against Sacramento, now it seems like we’ve hit our offensive groove. If I jinx us, feel free to ban me, Rohan.

The one game I miss most of we come back from a huge deficit AND Buckets gets FREED! Seriously? Nice, but I wish I had seen more of it.
Of course it isn’t over yet.
You HAVE missed something special
we were all throwing remotes and stuff early in the 3rd, then a miracle happened…MONTY ADJUSTED!
Rohan should have that covered
And I can’t wait to read it.
Man… argh, dinner out was nice but I can’t belive I missed the unleashing of MARCUS BUCKETS THORNTON.

this is a morale boost! hehe good game for MT, i hope they wont trade him! please!
No way they trade him after this
he needs to be on the floor…if Monty doesn’t see that after this performance then we might have picked up a bad coach.

took mleeping pill a little early so i am counting on you guys to walk me through this last quarter,
I see through blurred vision Thornton doing well.
I see lots of bad shot by Sac and us getting rebounds.
Very blurry…
But can make out thr score and it doen to thefinal minutes and tied…GREAT!
Ambien works so well with red wine,
That all I ca add at tyis poiny….
lol
if I’d have had any booze lying around, I’d have had blurred vision by the time the Hornets put it together as well.
Better late than never.
Even though Monty lost the team several winnable games by not playing Thornton, he finally used common sense and put Thornton in.
Thank you.
Man
I was keeping up with the game on my phone and was so irate when I saw them down by 20. Then they came back and won and the end of my incredibly long shift was much more fun. Then I come home and see that Thornton played.
I don’t care that this was against the Kings! I’m HAPPY!
