The King Outlook

It's looking more and more like a lost season in Sacramento. Perhaps most people won't be surprised by that, but I really did envision a 30+ win season for the Kings. A variety of factors have conspired against them. The big one, of course, is the hurt/ineffective play of Tyreke Evans who, after creating 107 points per 100 possessions last season, is at an awful 94 this year (for reference, 2010-2011 Willie Green, 2009-2010 Devin Brown, and career Hilton Armstrong are/were at 95, 97, and 97 respectively).

At this point, Sacramento has lost 16 of their last 18 games and feature the conference's second worst point differential (-7.0).

Our Outlook

In any case, our horrific stretch of offensive incompetence certainly originated in Sacramento. On November 21st, a 10-1 Hornets team (that was averaging 93 points per night) scored just 75 points. New Orleans barely squeaked out with a four point victory. In subsequent days, the Hornets lost to the Clippers, got destroyed by Utah and San Antonio, and the rest is, erm, yeah.

What did Sacramento do so well that night? For one, they shut down Chris Paul (2 for 12 despite 14 assists). But more importantly, they completely denied the post. Donte Green and Samuel Dalembert finished with a combined seven blocks. Every Hornet attempt in the paint was aggressively challenged, and Emeka Okafor and David West simply couldn't find a way to respond (in the paint. DX eventually closed the game from range). Eventually, Sacramento's proclivity to cough the ball up cost them the game (Luther Head turned it over almost once every two possessions used, and the team finished with 21 turns in a 90 possession game).

Subplots

  • The NOLA Business Council has apparently bought $30,000 worth of tickets for this game alone. So there may be a good number of people in seats for this one.
  • Enter tonight's jersey contest here: ENTER. Sorry I've been slacking on the leaderboard a bit; new one out tomorrow.
  • A random thing I tweeted tonight (follow me!!11) that will depress you: three of the league's ten least efficient players (minimum 15 games) in 2010-2011 play for the New Orleans Hornets. Can you guess them?

Come On, Man!

I’ll be at work tonight so the onus is on you all to pull the team through! The Hornets at home playing a bad team without its best player; if they don’t win this game it’s officially time to panic. I’m hoping for a good crowd tonight (they were pretty solid for the game against the Thunder) and hopefully the team carries over some of the good things that they did in the Heat game. I really hope the team takes advantage of their upcoming schedule and gets things back on track. But we don’t know what to expect with this team right now so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Go Hornets!

Chris Paul continually picks up his dribble when instead he could look for something else

A couple of nice aggressive moves, but they are far and few between. He seems very confused as to what he wants. Defensively the Kings are just hitting a bunch of jumpers which in turn opened up that lane for Tyreke Evans for the “And-1.”

Oh boy

losing to the hapless Kings? Boxscore indicates much of the same to me and Evans playing is a bit of a surprise.

Giving up 29 points in the first quarter?

Good thing Monty is still sticking with the all defensive team…

by RedHopeful on Dec 15, 2010 7:38 PM CST up reply actions

Was talking with some friends

and if CP3 is 100% healthy, why isn’t he getting involved offensively? I get that he isn’t Rose/Westbrook but even Deron Williams and Nash both will shoot the ball if their team needs some hoops.

by RedHopeful on Dec 15, 2010 7:41 PM CST reply actions

Already 2 long missed jumpers for Jack

in IND and TOR this guy took it to the hoop a ton, what’s up with just the jumpers? I’m really beginning to fear most of our ineptitude is Monty and his staffs doing…

But I can’t emotionally take Monty.
The ONE game he does need Gray, he’s inactive.
So he brings along Andersen who is to small for this center.

The Jack trade

couldn’t be looking any worse right now. JJ looks like he should be retired, Bayless playing well and our team chemistry since the trade appears on the fritz. Might look back on it and consider it very pivotal…

It's REALLY sad

down 14 to a lousy team while we question why our stale offense continues to stink. More importantly, fans are being asked to come to games and businesses make donations to save the team. Doesn’t look good, does it?

Looking like a lottery team

in the 1st half. KIng’s commentators talking about how it’s their best half of basketball in the longest of times.

Here’s a conspiracy thought – the reason Monty doesn’t employ a transition game is because CP3 isn’t 100% right and therefore controlling every possession is our best chance.

by RedHopeful on Dec 15, 2010 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

Assuming Rohan and others

are dealing with final exams or something school related.

Monty’s rotations and decisions on player active/inactive for games?
wouldn’t you activate gray for this type of game and center rather than the faster Miamai game?
I am really confused.

Can't

by RedHopeful on Dec 15, 2010 8:18 PM CST up reply actions

Trade Paul.

I think we should before the season i would have said hell no..I just dont feel that way anymore.

Oh and Thorton needs to play the whole second half oh and trade Green he has an expiring…I think.

by saintsbrasil on Dec 15, 2010 8:39 PM CST up reply actions

this team is a freakin joke

they havent done shit in the last 3 weeks and that 11-1 start may end up being the only reason why they finish .500 this year.

I’m starting to dislike Monty as our coach does he realize that halftime is for making adjustments. That game we loss to San Antonio exposed them bigtime.

by Jamian B on Dec 15, 2010 8:37 PM CST reply actions

This

this is absolutely ridicules. Ariza needs to come of the bench, Ok needs to come off the bench belinilli is not a starter. Break this team up. I know they don’t want to because of the ownership issue but this team needs new faces NOW.

Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils

by Madtown27 on Dec 15, 2010 8:40 PM CST reply actions

How is this possible?

I literally don’t understand how a team can go from 11-1 to playing like this, down 20 at home to the Sacramento Kings. What happened to this team??? How can a team fall apart like this? Literally, I’m not sure the Hornets would win one game in a 4 game series against any single team in the NBA right now. The way they are playing right now, they would lose to a number of D League teams. How is this possible? Can someone explain this to me?

by Andrew Juge on Dec 15, 2010 8:41 PM CST reply actions

Unbelievable Monty

Thornton in there being active and suddenly our team is apt on offense again

by RedHopeful on Dec 15, 2010 8:48 PM CST reply actions

Down 10

after being down over 20?

Amazing how many games it took for Monty to make an adjustment, ie. PLAY BUCKETS!

The offense lives!

I’m picturing some horrible shambling zombie clawing its way out of the earth here (since it was basically a corpse earlier).

Thornton is playing.
Thornton is playing with Paul.
Thornton is getting shots.
He’s going for lay-ups, and not jumpers.

I consider these GOOD SIGNS.

Would this work?

Starter

Paul
Thorton
Qpon
West
Smith/Anderson/Gray

That is plenty of offense to keep with any team

Bench

Jack
Belinelli I think Marco would play much better against back ups
Ariza would shut down the back up SF opponent for sure and be able to score a few
Smith/ anderson
OK he would be dominant against backup Centers

Gray

He makes a pretty solid back up center and especially against teams that love half court games.

No way they trade him after this

he needs to be on the floor…if Monty doesn’t see that after this performance then we might have picked up a bad coach.

lol

if I’d have had any booze lying around, I’d have had blurred vision by the time the Hornets put it together as well.

Better late than never.

Even though Monty lost the team several winnable games by not playing Thornton, he finally used common sense and put Thornton in.

Thank you.

Man

I was keeping up with the game on my phone and was so irate when I saw them down by 20. Then they came back and won and the end of my incredibly long shift was much more fun. Then I come home and see that Thornton played.

I don’t care that this was against the Kings! I’m HAPPY!
