Sister, Cousin of Willie Green Killed in Car Accident

There are days when we are abruptly reminded that basketball is just a game and that the players we cheer for, talk about, and scream at are more than pixels on our screens and statistics on the back of their cards. Today is one of those days.

Last night's game in Detroit was a homecoming for Green, who attended Thomas Cooley High School on the northwest side of Detroit and played college basketball at the University of Detroit Mercy. The Detroit Free Press reports that a number of Green's family members attended the game:

Tamara Lynette Green, 30, and her cousin, Gary Benjamin Green, 27, who was driving, died after a number of Green family members attended the game at the Palace of Auburn Hills, the player's father, Willie Green Sr., said today.

"I feel pretty hurt," Green Sr. said this morning. "But I’m going to take solace in the same things we tell other folks going through other things like this: If God permits something like that to happen, say ‘Amen’ and move on. That’s what I will use to cope."

Green was already in Indiana when he heard the news; as of this morning, he has traveled back to Detroit to be with his family.

Our condolences go out to Willie and his family.

Devestating News

I’ve actually started to like Willie the past couple of weeks (although nobody here truly hates him), and as a fan, you feel like you’re able to connect with some of the players on the court. But even as fans, we’ll never understand how a situation like this can affect a player. I feel for Willie and I hope that he and his family are able to overcome this terrible situation.

I feel like a bad person

… for making fun of his missed free throws and saying I wished he wouldn’t play. :-/

He is my age and his sister was a year older. Just like me and my brother. That makes me sad.

That is so sad.

I hope he and his family are able to pull through. That has to hurt him deeply especially when he just saw them at the game. My prayers are with him and his family in this difficult time. Stay Strong Willie and know Hornets fans are here for you.

Whatever my opinion of Willie on the court...

…I’ve never been given any cause to think he’s not a good person, and its horrible for anyone, regardless, to have to go through something so sudden and horrible as this. My condolences, Willie. Truly a sad day.

Longtime sixers fan here. Felt horrible when I heard this news. Willie is such a nice guy and had the pleasure of meeting him and talking to him a few times before games. My thoughts and prayers are with Willie and the entire Green family.
