Monty Williams is the New Coach of the New Orleans Hornets
I'd put up a FanShot link, but frankly all the coaching FanShotting is driving me a little crazy. From Y! Sports (surprise, surprise, it's A-Woj):
After pulling an offer to Tom Thibodeau, the New Orleans Hornets and Portland Trail Blazers assistant Monty Williams have agreed to the framework of a three-year contract to become the team’s head coach, a source briefed on the talks told Yahoo! Sports.
Hornets GM Jeff Bower abandoned his courtship of Thibodeau, a Boston Celtics assistant, on Friday afternoon, and entered into discussions with Williams to take the job. The source says the team will hold an option for the third season of the deal.
So there it is. Good riddance, Tom Thibodeau, and welcome, Mr. Williams!

Alright now it's time for a press conference?
Wait, no? Ahh Bower and Co still want to be secretive…

Associate Head Coach, what is that?

Wishful Thinking
I think the Hornets were just trying to show their legit belief in both of them. Associate Head Coach is the role that Thibodeau is currently serving in Boston, actually.

Monty Williams Is The Guy
I’m happy that this search is finally over. All it took was us fans saying we were sick of the search for the Hornets to conclude it! Williams is a low profile but interesting hire. I’m legitimately excited to see what he brings to the table. Maybe we can get a press conference to finalize this, no?

Hopefully
New Orleans will want to announce it soon, with all the other delays going on.
Welcome to the site btw… and nice avatar. I miss those days.
Thanks, dude!
I’ve been a regular reader here as of late and I thought I’d join. I’m a frequent contributor on CBSSportsline on the NBA boards as the only resident Hornets fan, and if I can talk about the Hornets with fellow fans it’s a true blessing!

Congrats
Monty is a good guy. Congrats on getting a fine coach.
At last!
Bout time they moved on. Hopefully this works out well. It’s time to get started on working out draft prospects.
I read on another forum
where Blazer fans said that Monty is good with developing young players. Totally different from Scott right? LOL!
Hahah
After all the blown prospects of the last few years- Hilton, Simmons, JuJu [ :( ] – I am down to get some more beastly, Collison/Thornton type rookie play.
What do you think
this means for Julian Wright? Is there any hope for him under a new coach?
I think so
Monty has been mostly noted for working with the Blazers’ forwards (Outlaw, Batum and Webster (though Webster’s probably more of a G type)). And personally, for some reason, I just can’t give up on JuJu. I gave up on Hilton really quick, but JuJu in the right system (high paced, running fast breaks, etc) could reinvent himself.
Assuming he wants to put in the work of course, which at this point, really isn’t a given.
Julian Wright
May have burned some bridges last year with his horrible play at the start of the season, but hopefully (because I know we all like him; just frustrated with him) he can get an extended opportunity to shine and really work on his game this season. I legitimately want him to step out at some point to be the replacement for Peja but he just hasn’t shown anything thus far. If Monty can turn Julian into a consistent, good, contributing player he’ll be like a basketball Jesus in this fan’s eyes!

Ha. The next Mashburn.
Did you see Chris Douglas Roberts tweet today?
“Just requested my @jamalmashburn tapes..got to steal the way he use to post up.He constantly moved his shoulders while backin down! (pause)”
Word.
Mimicking Mashburn Is Smart
Hopefully he doesn’t mimick his injury history though!
Although, we can all take solace in the fact that Mashburn played his only 82 game season in the inagular season here in New Orleans. Then he proceeded to miss postseason games.

As for JuJu...
he should be stoaked about this hiring. Maybe he might have some actual basketball I.Q. after Monty is done with him.
If not I am sure Monty could just sub on himself and show everyone how it’s done.

Off to ATL?
I think Chouest really liked him, but Bower and them preferred Thibs/Monty. I liked AJ, but the whole eliminating destroying Dallas in that 2008 series/getting him fired would’ve been awwwwkward.
Avery's
Probably going to end up in New Jersey. They seem interested in him because he has prior head coaching experience. Dwane Casey looks to be the guy in Atlanta.

Mark Jackson
is getting a 2nd interview with ATL. If they like him Avery could be out. That’s a big IF though.
Avery Johnson dropped
out of contention a long time ago.
Reading
The Case for Monty Williams makes the guy sound very approachable which can only be a good thing. But I guess as long as he keeps it straight and let them know that first and foremost he’s the coach, everything should be ok. He can be a friend but at the same time not let that get in the way of doing the job he’s getting paid for.
Yup
I was trying to dig up some more info for a post tomorrow, but that’s about as extensive as it gets. I’ll repost it tongight for those that haven’t had a chance to read it.
I'm PSYCHED
This is a culture changing move. The Blazers had a top defense the past few seasons, and Williams has worked under Nate McMillan, who I believe is a fantastic coach, so I think he could work some wonders with this team. Thibodeau can shove it for all I care, I feel disrespected by the way this went down, but I think Williams is probably the best choice for this team because he’s endorsed by CP3, and no matter what, that’s what is most important. I think he can make something of Julian and I think he can help give this team a lift in morale and make it into something very exciting. It may take another year to make the playoffs, but I can wait because I really like this hire.
This draft screams Dynasty. If that's the case, then I say, let the Saints Reign begin!
Agreed on all acounts. I am happy now that it seems to be as good as certain. I love Montys passion for the game ( him having overcome a heart problem and still making it) and his upbringing by two good coaches (Poppovich and Mcmillan). But I think Monty is not really a coach for a fast paced team. Neither the Blazers nor the Spurs have ever been that.
I guess we wont become defensive juggernauts, but because of pace quite decent.
I am just psyched that we can go on looking at draft prospects.

I'm not sure about pace
It’s tough to judge how a coach will approach the game when they’ve never been a head coach before. You’re right, we can’t expect him to be a high-pace guy, but I think it’ll be really fun to watch a young coach form an identity. We’ll be watching a team and a coach grow up right before our eyes.
Before last season
hadn’t the Hornets been at least top 5-7 in defenses? This past 2009-10 season they were ranked like #21. Where were they last season? If I’m reading it at ESPN right they were ranked #5 in the 2008-09 season. And ranked #5 in 2007-08. These are based on rankings per opponents points allowed. So the Hornets hadn’t been a bad defensive team until this past 2009-10 season. Chris Paul has been our best defensive player and well, he was out for most of the season so I could see how we would have a drop off. But yeah, we have to get back to playing better defense.
