Hornets on the Internets: Free Agency Edition

Hornets_on_the_internets_medium_medium

Free Agency is upon us. As you've been told countless times, this is the most exciting free agent period ever, which is precisely what makes it so banal. Steel yourself for ESPN turning into a 24/7 LeBron network. And you thought their Favre obsession was bad.

But take heart, in small corners of the internet, people realize that there are excellent free agents available not named James, Wade, or Bosh.

Star-divide

The big problem is in scope. Take a look at this list from Basketball-Reference. It has all the free agents available.178 free agents on the market, and over 100 of them are unrestricted. That means that any real analysis of a team's best options is going to take a ton of time and research, and even then it might be iffy. So take a look at the list, sort it by your stat of choice, figure out who you think is a good option, and talk about them in the comments or write a FanPost. Should be an entertaining time, if we can just avoid ESPN.

Hornets 247 has two posts up about free agency, and they're both worth a read. The author definitely looks at some diamonds in the rough, and that makes the posts pretty interesting. To give you an idea of how big this free agent class is, the first post talks about the Hornets' need for a Tony Allen type of player. It turns out that Tony Allen is a free agent this year. The sheer size and scope of this free agent class is mind-bending.

I feel that the most important thing to do during this free agent period is to not get too caught up in the latest rumors, since they're probably inaccurate. The Orlando Sentinel had a nice piece about this:

You can't believe anything anymore.

Not coaches. Not GMs. Not even the 11 o'clock news.

Over the last few days, we have heard media outlets tell us LeBron James is almost certainly headed to (take your pick) New York ... Chicago ... and, most recently, Miami.

Here is the latest in the ridiculousness: ESPN reported Tuesday that LeBron, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh held a summit in Miami this past weekend to discuss their plans for free agency. One problem: The Miami Herald reported Tuesday that Wade spent the weekend in Chicago.

Should be a crazy free agency period.

Finally, it appears that Byron Scott may soon be house hunting in the Cleveland area. ESPN reports that Scott will be the next coach of the Cavaliers, and puts the uncertainty surrounding that particular job in stark terms:

Scott does not know what kind of team he could be leading. If James re-signs with the Cavaliers, he could have an Eastern Conference contender on his hands. If James goes elsewhere, Cleveland will be in a rebuilding effort similar to the ones he took over in New Jersey and New Orleans.

Of course, we wish all the best to Byron, and look forward to the first time the Cavs play at the Hive.

OUt of the list there are many intriguing guys I compiled a small list split into bigs and Sg/SF :
Tony Allen – great defender, decent slasher, not too old, rather cheap,
Ronnie Brewer – my number one choice, good offensively, decent defender, great size, young
Kyle Korver – MLE guy, awesome three point shooter, not the best defender, already 29 Randy Foye – my number two or number three choice, young, can play SG/PG, decent in everything
Roger Mason,Mike Miller – decent role players at this stage, quite old, shouldnt be too expensive
Travis Outlaw – great team guy, Monty knows him, great rebounder, good defender
Drew Gooden – “only” 28, great tweener between C/PF, great rebounder, decent defender, good offensively
Ike Diogu – could be a beast, wanna know what he brings, cheap
Aaron Gray – hope he gets in better shape, cheap, good touch, decent rebounder, defender
Ian Mahinmi,,Johan Petro – both are young, could probably be had cheap, size

I think all these players could be potential targets for the hornets and be an upgrade on what we have right now. Id rather go for young and cheap, than try to get someone like Joe Johnson.
Only Bosh would interest me. And to be honest I still think the hornets have the best S&T package to offer that is out there. Another big money guy would be Iggy from Philly.

Gooden to Milwaukee - 5/$32 mill

And he’s not a decent defender – otherwise I think he would have been a good fit for NO, although not at that price

Free Agent Signings

I like the idea of keeping Ike Diogu and Aaron Gray; signing Ronnie Brewer, Travis Outlaw and see if Hawks are willing to accept Peja or Posey for Josh Childress or golden state accept Peja or Posey or Songolia for Anthony Morrow and Anthont Tolliver. Just cut Sean Marks and maybe trade Darius Songolia for Amir Johnson – Toronto Raptors.

Good Luck To Scott

Even if LeBron doesn’t return, we all know he did a fantastic job rebuilding the Hornets and I wish him well in Cleveland.

Is anyone else baffled that Richard Jefferson left 15 million dollars on the table?! I can’t believe it. People here in San Antonio are celebrating and they have no idea that their only attractive trade piece (besides Tony Parker) was Jefferson’s 15 million dollars and now they have no cap room to improve. Spurs fans.

Anyways, I think the Hornets would be best served going after a shooting guard or a center, as we all agree those are the biggest needs. As far as shooting guard, someone like Josh Childress or Travis Outlaw would be great. Childress has always been a favorite of mine and I wanted him over Posey in 2008 (although I still like Posey and still support that acquisition). Outlaw is a Monty guy and may be willing to join him here in New Orleans, but I’m not sure how well he’ll do at shooting guard. I’ve always thought him to be more of a small forward, but what’s the difference really? Tony Allen would be terrific but I think it’s a foregone conclusion he stays in Boston.

As far as big man, yuck what a group of guys that’s going to be vastly overpaid. Stay away from Gooden at all costs and see if you can get Portland to bite on giving you Joel Przybilla or take a chance on young, unfinished projects like Amir Johnson or Shawne Williams.

The Hornets have to be careful in who they acquire. We’ve done AWFUL in free agency the last few years and we have to stop killing ourselves long term. That doesn’t mean stay away from all the big name players, I just want the team to be smart in who they acquire. And let’s face it, while all the other teams cleared up cap space to get a “OMFG MAX CONTRAKT GY,” we already have one under contract in Chris Paul. So just make the smart, necessary moves and this team can win the division next season.

Just posted in the Budget Thread

that I’d love to see either Brewer or Childress.

As far as big men, I’d probably stay away from Joel P considering the injury (that he re-injured in a shower) he’s coming off of. Projects like either Williams or Amir (who Tor would likely try to keep with a Bosh departure) aren’t that appealing either. How about Ian Mahinmi or Joey Dorsey instead?

Dorsey is intruging

What about Udonis Haslem?

I did consider him

but fear with DWest, Songalia and Brackins, he’d be redundant.

Free Agents

This is the Hornets opportunity to make great changes for the best. If they don’t grab one of the great players to help out Chris Paul the opportunity may not come again for a while and Paul may leave. He has similar needs like LeBron. He desires to be on a championship type team and he needs help on the court. The way the Hornets are right now that will NEVER happen. They honestly need to get rid of DAVID WEST! Yes West has alot of talent, but he has NO heart. Half the time he doesn’t even play his best game. He won’t get heart over night so they might as well let him go so he can stop wasting their time. CHRIS BOSH or KEVIN GARNETT is a great pick for the Hornets!!!
