Sunday Discussion: Looking Back at Summer League

Well, that went by quickly. A week and five losses later, we've seen some good, some bad, and, let's be honest, some ugly.

My quick thoughts after the jump, before I turn it over to you guys:

Star-divide

  • Q really came on strong once he got a couple games under his belt. Last night was exactly what we all envisioned for him on draft night. Obviously he's got a ton of work left to do to become an NBA contributor... but for now, he's got the mentality, the physical tools, and from what I can tell, willingness to work on it. Long post coming this week about Quincy and his game last night.
  • Over four games, it became clear that Brackins prefers a perimeter game to a post one. On the plus side, he does have a really nice shot, and he's not afraid to fire away. On the down side, he has a long road ahead of him to become an adequate post defender. Really hoping David West can show him a thing or two (and maybe turn him onto whatever weight training regiment he's on..)
  • Kyle Hines. Seriously. I don't know if I've ever seen a guy work as hard as Hines did over five games. He had at least a hand on every loose ball, every rebound, and literally did not take a single defensive possession off all week. Not sure if he fits in with New Orleans (though playing him at the 3 with Brackins at the 4 could be an intriguing pairing; both complement each other well), but I'm rooting for him to catch on with an NBA team.
  • Maurice Ager was the go-to player for the Summer Hornets (up until Q's explosion last night anyway). He showed good range, good athleticism, and pretty good ball handling ability. A cheap 3rd point guard/wing option? Maybe.
  • Coleman can certainly score, but he contributed little in the way of anything else. The bigs (Sonderleiter and Cusworth) were very disappointing overall. The 0-5 record was more a function of Collison and Thornton stepping out and Pondexter and Brackins taking a few games to find themselves, but the supporting cast behind Hines, Coleman, and Ager didn't really help much (Josh Carter was the best of the bunch there).
So feel free to jump in and talk about any of those points or toss in some of your own. Favorite players? Guys you want to see get camp invites? Notice anyone on other summer league rosters that could fill a need in New Orleans?

Hines And Coleman

I liked what they did for the team. Maybe someone gives them extended looks in training camp and, if so, hopefully it’s the Hornets. However, I do question whether or not either will make the team. Hines isn’t the ideal size for the kind of game he plays but we’ve seen small guys succeed in his role before. He really impressed though so I’d be surprised if he’s not invited to camp.

Coleman and Ager both fit needs but I’m not big on Ager being the guy brought in to fill the backup shooting guard role. Even though Coleman is a bit selfish, I’d much prefer him over Ager just in terms of upside. Ager played great against Washington and played good against Toronto, but he mainly was just there for a few games as well. He’s had NBA experience, he’s 26 years old; he bavsically had to dominate to tell me he had a chance to contribute in any way for the regular season team.

Just my two cents.

I think you're right

Those are the two guys I’d expect to see going to camp. My mancrush on Hines is well documented here, so I don’t think I need to expound on it a whole lot more, other than to say this: only six players in NCAA history have racked up 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 300 bocked shots. They are: Alonzo Mourning, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Pervis Ellison, Derrick Coleman, and Kyle Hines. Cherry pick alert!

Remember the last time someone doubted a short PF who could rebound?

DeJuan Blair anyone? Listen, if you can rebound the ball, you can rebound the ball. Hines will catch on with a team and be a very solid contributor. He’ll never be great offensively, but defensively and rebounding is where he excels.

Yeah

Good rebounders tend to be good rebounders at every level. 13.6 rebounds per 40 for Hines in Summer League.

I’d like to see the Hornets give him a shot.

by Caleb462 on Jul 18, 2010 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup

He also excelled in college at steals and blocks, two stats that tend to predict NBA success defensively. Just two inches taller and teams would be all over him… the height is still really the dealbreaker for him.

I think only one guy makes the cut and its probably aubrey coleman because of the need a SG. The hornets will definantly need to add another big body 6’10 or taller to complete the roster.

by dallashornet on Jul 18, 2010 12:19 PM CDT reply actions

I think Ager

would come in over Coleman. He can play SG or PG. Coleman is just a pure scorer.

Agreed

Though I would say that the two things Coleman has over Ager are youth and a sense of freshness. He’s 26, coming off leading the nation in scoring and while he may not actually be better than Ager, like MrWayneKeller said, we’ve already seen Ager fail to make it in the NBA…. so maybe that factors in the Hornets decision?

by Rohan on Jul 18, 2010 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmm good point

but obviously the Hornets saw something in him that made them want to take him for their team

Exactly... that's why

Sonderleiter and Cusworth being so bad was depressing. I was hoping at least one of them could show enough to merit a training camp invite… but both just looked pretty lost instead

In addition to Sean Williams, whom we should sign

Whatever happened to Guillermo Diaz? I watched him play at the U & thought he was a ferocious competitor. Random observation but it’s stunning to me that guys like Devin Brown have suited up for the Hornets in the past year & a half and a guy like Diaz has to rely on some poster on the internet/NBA providence to make him relevant professionally.

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Jul 18, 2010 4:07 PM CDT reply actions

I watched some DLeague footage of Diaz a few years ago

And came away impressed. Guy can get to the hoop/line and is pretty creative. Haven’t heard of him since he headed overseas though

by Rohan on Jul 18, 2010 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Sean has improved a bit

and could be an interesting pickup if the Hornets decide to move Brackins to the 3. Only problem is he still shows a lack of consistency (today’s game of 9 PF’s and 5 TO’s) + he’s a bit undersized to help much at center. Could be a nice fit at PF though if we could find a taker for Songalia.

REBOUNDS

Yes, that does deserve ALL CAPS! This team needs rebounds and defense and Hines can do that against all but a handful of taller teams. He will also bring needed toughness and hustle. Plus his arms belong on a magazine cover. This is Ryan Bowen on steroids, if you’ll pardon the expression. R-boss!!! Height means less than technique and heart where rebounding is concerned. Look at Kevin Love….

If we fill out our entire 15-man roster from Day 1 we still have Peja’s expiring to allow us to tinker later. I say bring in both Ager and Coleman. That gives us 5 guards, with 10 spots left for front court players. Oak, DW, and Q as starters. Pejahead, Posey, and Grey are second string. Brackins, Doigu, and Hines fill out the line-up. We trade Julian Wright’s suit for a future second round pick. That leaves one spot for a free-agent center who can run, jump, catch, and slam. All on the same play, hopefully…..

by NOEngineer on Jul 18, 2010 4:22 PM CDT reply actions

If we fill out our entire 15-man roster from Day 1

Yup, I’m in favor of doing that this year too… I still don’t really know what to think of Ager and Coleman, but if they can show some more in training camp, then who knows? I hope Q can challenge as a starter too. CP/MT/Q/DX/Oak would definitely be a fun 5 to watch, with Collison, Random SG, Peja, Posey, Brackins, Gray a solid bench.

by Rohan on Jul 18, 2010 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Definitely

Our roster isn’t really in all that bad of shape as we stand. I’d say we’re in the top 6 in the conference.

Agreed

If Peja can stay healthy in his final year… who knows, maybe better? As ridiculous as this offseason has been, this team is still kind of, sort of… good. Haha.

Also this is neither here or there, but talked to a guy in Vegas who hung out with CP this week. He said CP told him that he definitely wants to stay in NOLA, and the media totally blew the New York thing out of proportion.

now that is wonderful news

that soothes my aches. love to hear that from a source as reliable as the ones that say otherwise. I actually believe this more, obviously that person didntb actually gain anything from saying what he said. Just feels good to hear that.

In case anybody wants to read an awesome story about Aubrey Coleman

And I know the people are clamoring for more Aubrey Coleman:

http://www.draftexpress.com/article/The-Unlikely-Story-of-Aubrey-Coleman-3435/

I think we’ve gone from a best case scenario of getting Pritchard and Brewer to a best case scenario of Coleman and Hines.

by Brian Ball on Jul 18, 2010 4:44 PM CDT reply actions

What about...

Rashad McCants? He skipped Cavs summer league due to his mom getting sick with cancer but he wants to be invited to another training camp hopefully. From what I have been reading he is not a bad guy. ESPN Mag did a story on him in the newest issue. He seems to get bad press for no reason. And he can score.

Here is the Story...

It is insider so not sure who has that here. and hopefully posting the link wont get me in any kind of trouble ;x.

Do you know whether he is a decent defender. He wouldnt solve any hight issues, but he seems to be skilled enough to warrant a closer look. Could be a good backup for Thornton and shouldnt come too expensive either. Intriguing

by berlinhornets on Jul 19, 2010 3:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Looks like it...

I was reading the article and it said out of college and in his first few seasons with the Wolves he was described as:

“a quick-trigger shooting guard physical enough to defend small forwards.”
