At Times Like This All You Can Do Is Laugh

[Promoted from the FanPosts. I haven't written specifically about the various Chris Paul trade rumors, but they're certainly swirling madly, and we've had good discussion about it in the comments. (Which, reminds me, I should mention, y'all have been on fire with the comments. Serious.] Anyways, this FanPost from Grayson addresses it pretty head on. Well done, sir. -atthehive]

Chris Paul trade rumors, well they are just that, rumors. As defined by the Macquarie dictionary:

n. 1. a story or statement in general circulation without confirmation or certainty as to facts

n. 2. unconfirmed gossip.

These are all in my view plain speculation fuelled by a free agent frenzy that the beloved ESPN media has created. Fact is this free agent period has been quite anti-climatic and with only 4 viable big name free-agents many teams looking to contend look elsewhere and this is where Chris Paul comes in. All these Orlando, Portland, Nets and other fans really need a reality check when proposing any trade for Chris Paul.Scaled_php_medium

Such a great trade. Let's do it. (Chris Paul to either Portland/New Jersey/New York/Orlando for a bag of potato crisps, great deal in my view...note sarcasm)

Star-divide

For many teams and their fans there is a generalisation that is reached and a certain false perception on New Orleans.

The team is in a small market therefore they cannot win championships.

This is utterly false. Need you look no further than the Saints, San Antonio Spurs and others?

The Hornets are in a financial stranglehold

False, it's true that the ownership transition has reached a stand-still but by no means does that mean the organisation is scrambling to make end's meat. I'd figure the Mo Pete trade would shut up a lot of these meaningless trade rumors but I was proven wrong. The Hornets are now right at the luxury tax line so it kind of puts to rest these implications of the so called "Hornet salary debacle."

The Hornets need expiring contracts.

Wrong again, the Hornets already having several expirings in Peja (15 million), Songaila (4.8 million) and West's opt out could be considered one as well (8.3 million). The free-agent clear out by teams like the Knicks, Heat, Bulls etc has already been done well before this offseason so if the Hornets want expirings for a worse Free-Agent class next year it makes little sense.

The Hornets are going to be in trouble under the new CBA.

Well false again if you look at point 3 because the Hornets salary will be below the estimated 61 million hard cap in upcoming seasons so that kind of puts to rest those theories and stupid lines of thinking. A hard-cap is most certaintly going to be instituted and will raise the salary cap from 58 million but will lower the soft cap from 70 odd million.

Chris Paul doesn't want to be in New Orleans he wants to be with his bud Lebron.

False, about Chris Paul wanting out of NOLA. He has never said he wants to leave New Orleans. The only time he mentioned the possibility of him leaving was if the Hornets organisational direction was not one headed for a championship. As for Paul wanting to play with LBJ I am sure it is true. However who's to say Lebron doesn't resign with the Cavs and keeps pluggin' along with them? As well I don't necessarily think Paul and Lebron would work well together as both demand the ball and Lebron is pretty much a point forward.

Dude my collection of acorns for Chris Paul! It's totally fair!

Yea I'm sorry all you non-hornet fans out there this 'aint your little brother you can severely short change.

Chris Paul is one of the top 5 players in the league and it seems to me that many of these fans are severely undervaluing Paul's value thinking they can get rid of a bunch of old, no-potential expiring players. Going into this offseason I thought there would be more Collison rumors than Paul, but the devine wisdom of ESPN has intervened and cited no sources to back up any of their information in their wheeling and dealings.

Unfortunately it is their audience that buys into any of the speculation they spew out and it becomes a snowball effect where it just gets bigger and bigger and the only way to stop it is one of three things.

1.     The front office plainly states they are not trading Chris Paul.

2.     The Ownership of Gary Chouest is officially announced.

3.     Winning.

Point 1 has already kind of happened with Shinn coming out and saying in plain English that the Hornets are not trading Paul. This hasn't deterred any of the large media outlets from continuing to dribble out a bunch of crap that they have not cited effectively negating any official statement the teams makes.

However it is point 2 that I believe will finally shut all these things up. If Chouest comes up, is introduced, makes a statement saying he wants to bring championships to New Orleans now, as well as keeping Chris Paul for the long term then maybe, just maybe people might realise that Chris Paul isn't leaving New Orleans for cheap crappy players.

Point three really addresses the media directly. Winning solves everything. I know it's far to early to reach expectations and make predictions but if the Hornets just play winning basketball this season (with Chris Paul) then ESPN, TNT, Yahoo.com and others will all shut up. Yes this is a business, but many need to be reminded that this is a basketball business and if your team is winning then I can 100 percent guarantee your team will be profitable (just look at 2007-08).

I guess at times like this all you can do is laugh.

Silly ESPN...

I am an insider and one of the rumors is about Paul and apparently a source’ (ie: anyone wearing a Hornets jersey) said Paul now wants out of New Orleans because Bower might become the Nets GM or something.

Now if we can only get believable rumors like Willy Wonka to coach the Clippers, and the the new point guard for the Knicks will be Bugs Bunny (he had mad handles in Space Jam.)

As a Portland fan to Hornets fan

Would you guys consider this trade for Paul?…

Portland sends:
PG.) Andrea Miller (expiring contract)
SG.) Jerryd Bayless (rookie scale for 2 more years)
SG.) Nicolas Batum (rookie scale for 2 more years)
PF.) LaMarcus Aldridge (just signed extension)
C.) Marcus Camby (expiring conract)
2011 FIRST ROUND PICK
2012 FIRST ROUND PICK
$3 MILLION IN CASH

New Orleans sends:

PG.) Chris Paul
C.) Emeka Okafor (very bad contract)
SF.) Peja Stojakovic (expiring contract)
2ND ROUND PICK

This trade would work money wise. Portland still has a 1.5 million trade exception to use. ( thanks to the Webster for Gomes and Babbit trade with the Wolves.)

by Shane976654 on Jul 2, 2010 4:39 AM CDT reply actions

But why would the Hornets do this?

Get rid of the face of the franchise for a bunch of players who have already met their potential and a couple of late first rounders (because let’s face it Portland are making the playoffs the next two years.)

I understand you Portland fans are going crazy over the notion of Paul but unless Roy is invloved in the trade then the Hornets would be stupid to get rid of an All-Star, top 5 player for a bunch of no names.

You neglect to read the part where I mention:

the Hornets already having several expirings in Peja (15 million), Songaila (4.8 million) and West’s opt out could be considered one as well (8.3 million).

I appreciate your optimism but it just aint gunna happen. Just like a Lebron sign-and-trade, it aint gunna happen either.

that would be a bad trade for the Blazers

Getting rid of Aldridge and Batum?
The original deal of Andre, Batum, Bayless and Przy, with maybe Rudy and $3mill thrown in would be good for PDX, but anymore and we should just stick with the roster we got. Oden will be dominant and we could get Devin Harris instead

Yeah, sorry but

only the Timberwolves would be stupid to trade an elite players for an entire team.

Great post Grayson. It should definitly get around. Regarding the Blazers trade idea. I am afraig that the one proposed here actually would entice Shinn. If the other one that was rumoured has any truth to it and was slightly considered, I fear for the Hornets. CP has to stay. He is one of the only true max players out there. You can actually build around him (unlike Joe Johnson, Amar’e, Bosh etc…). But I have to say this about CP, if it truely about winning, why did he sign the max deal? Its his good right and everything, but its the same thing with everything in free agency right now. All these guys wanna win but dont wanna sign a deal that gives the team a little more room to operate. Chris wants to win, 3mil.$ a year less wouldnt have killed him, but helped the team tremendously and he understands the nba business and knows how the cap works. I am not hating on his decision or his contract, but all these players that sign these max deals and make demands later on and threaten the team to leave are clearly to be blamed too.

My fear is

They floated that awful Jameer Nelson/Vinsanity trade rumor to make the Portland trade proposal seem more palatable.

Fantastic Work

This is a terrific piece to read all the way through. Unfortunately, unless the team wins, I don’t think anything will change. There’s a strange misconception going around that every player in the league “deserves to win a championship” and just because you trade him to New York, who hasn’t won one since 1973, means you’re doing Chris Paul a wonderful favor. Let’s face facts, we’re a small market team. We are. The NBA, and David Stern is responsible for this, negates small market teams. They’re more concerned with reaching out to China and Europe and they don’t even care about the Minnesota’s, Milwaukee’s, New Orleans’, Sacramento’s, etc. in their own league. When you see NBA commercials or advertisements for how great the league is, who do you see? LeBron, Kobe, Wade, Garnett, Shaq, etc. Tim Duncan has won four championships and is one of the best players the game will ever see. Ever. If he hadn’t won those championships, nobody would care about him.

But David Stern has always favored big market teams over small market teams. You see it in advertisement, you see it in other areas of the game as well (such as officiating) and it’s indicative of the money the team is losing.

Let’s be hypothetical. We all LOVE basketball, we LOVE the Hornets. But let’s say that we’re random citizens of the city of New Orleans. The Hornets have one of the great, young players in the game; one of the most marketable names and games that the league could have. Unless the team is blazing it up like it was in 2008, and even then it took a long time for attendance to follow the success, what excitement does the NBA generate to have us show up to the games? Everytime we catch a random game, what are we shown? We’re shown LeBron. We’re shown Kobe, etc. That’s why those games sell out and games like the Hornets vs. the Bobcats can barely fill the seats.

So when you have a great player on one of those teams, you have rumors like this come up. Portland and Orlando are relevant because they’re consistent playoff teams, but the rumors to New York and New Jersey, when you’re trying to argue that the Hornets should give Chris Paul to a contender, is ridiculous!

Ridiculous Trade Rumors

It seems that everytime a free agent sets up a meeting or trade rumors are posted, It always involves the Nets, Nicks, Heat, or Bulls. Its getting pretty out of hand, because most of these ‘rumors’ are unfounded and pretty bogus. Media is makin’ it seem like that those 4 teams are targeting anybody who’s ever dribbled a basketball!

CP3 is starting to p*ss me off...

with all this “I want to win now” crap. In the latest article he really doesn’t say anything different than what we saw in the ESPN article but I guess if you read it enough it’ll seem like it keeps getting repeated. Hey, I understand wanting to win now. I do. But he needs to learn what cap is about and learn how to stay healthy to be able to help his team win. You play like 45 games last season and you have the nerve to complain about wanting to win now? Give me a break kid. Don’t become that guy.

by QueenBee on Jul 2, 2010 3:07 PM CDT reply actions

To Be Fair

CP3 only mentioned that he wanted the team to be active in free agency. His dad was the one being quoted as saying if the team didn’t go after Dirk or LeBron that Chris Paul would be looking to play elsewhere and rightfully so.

But Paul, if he’s demanding they go after one of those players, is entirely incompetent to the basketball side of things. I’m sur ehe knows the limitations. I’m sure he knows that the team has made moves within their limitations to get better the last two seasons and it’s on him to stay healthy, not on the team to get him LeBron, for the franchise to show significant improvement.

Did Dr. James Andrews....

tell CP3 he had 2 years left on his repaired knee or something? I mean seriously. What’s with the huge sense of urgency guy? How old was Jordan when he won his first championship? How old was Isiah? Not saying you should have to wait that long but I’m curious as to what the huge urgency is all about?

by QueenBee on Jul 2, 2010 3:47 PM CDT reply actions

I think that there is a sense of urgency

Only because of the severly overhyped free-agent period. If it was any other year I can assure you there wouldn’t be this panic around Hornets nation.

Yes CP came out and said he wants to see some roster moves but I think he’s bought into this hype of “We must get more Max contracts to win.”

Yes we have to win now but I think this team is only one MLE away from being a top 4 team in the west.

I'm Even Starting To Hear

Rumors from Chad Ford that the Knicks are offering Danilo Gallinari straight up for Chris Paul and Emeka Okafor. The Hornets might as well go back on Chad Ford’s other “reportedly close deal” between the Trail Blazers. Hell, while we’re at it, let’s petition for Jeff Bower to pick up the phone, call back the Grizzlies and ask them if the Hornets can still get that proposed O.J. Mayo for Paul deal.

Jeeeeeeeeze.

well who doesn't want to win....

I would be pissed off at CP3 if he DIDN"T have that attitude. As far as the trade rumor goes, the best one so far was a delusional Laker bandwagon jumper proposing a trade of CP3 to the Lakers for Luke Walton and Sasha Vuyachich….even the Timberwolves and Grizzlies aren’t that dumb…..which brings me to a realization that if you didn’t have teams pulling stupid trades (like the Gasol trade) then these idiotic rumors might appear less.

by 3ptace on Jul 2, 2010 7:04 PM CDT reply actions

Thank you for this - great read

If the Hornets are to ever deal CP3, a top 10 NBA talent has to be part of the package coming back – period. I’m not even a Hornets fan, yet it irks me to no end to see these off the wall propositions.

Even if the franchise were in trouble, you don’t trade Chris Paul, for he is the franchise.

And 1 – I’m equally tired of the notion that Collison must go if Paul stays. Collison will get some time behind Paul, and I could see New Orleans running teams ragged in spurts with a three guard offense featuring Paul, Collison and Thornton.

Good luck this coming season.

Oh man section214

I agree with you. It’s nice to finally hear an outsider say this because Portland fans are just annoying as hell when it comes to a CP3 trade. They would never trade Roy yet I think the only way CP3 ever (hypothetically) goes to Portland the Hornets have to get Roy in exchange.

Best of luck to your Kings next year, and I mean that sincerily. You guys look in good shape for the future, heck you guys might even upset a few teams to grab an 8th seed.

if your a sacramento fan

then good luck to you :) I am a Hornets fan and we are totally thankful for people like you who not only see the truth behind this “media” smoke but can truly understand how important it is for small market teams to continue to be competitive..

Your Sacramento Kings are set up pretty well. and I am envious about your team’s frontcourt rotation, i mean its a good problem to have(just like with our guard rotation last year).. Dalembert, Thompson, Landry, Cousins, Whiteside Brockman.. I just hope your FO, when they finally choose who to commit to(example, Landry, Cousins and Whiteside with Brockman as the 4th big) would decide to trade Thompson to us. Just a wish :) (I hope entertainment and sports programming network doesn’t find a way to spin this reply as a rumor)…
