Julian Wright Not Doing Himself Any Favors
[Back to back front paged FanPosts? Yes! Another really good post, this time by MrWayneKeller about JuJu and Summer League. I'm hoping to be in Vegas for at least one of the two upcoming weekends, so hopefully much more reporting come up. Personally, I'm pretty disappointed Julian won't be out there, with Pondexter sure to challenge him for a role on the team in the fall. -atthehive]
Let's be honest here, we all love Julian Wright. We all remember that game in 2008 against the Nets when he replaced Peja Stojakovic and looked like a fixture for our future for years to come. Ever since his rookie season in 2008, when everything seemed so perfect and ideal in Hornets-land, we all had high hopes for "Juju" and, more importantly, we all cheered for him to succeed. The fans wanted nobody to succeed as much as they wanted Julian Wright to. But it hasn't happened. Wright showed flashes the last couple months of 2008, had high hopes for 2009 and struggled to even crack the rotation. All seemed to be forgiven when he was basically given a spot in the starting lineup this season, only to see that experiment fail six games into the season.
But with the new regime coming in, a lot of us had hopes that Williams could work his magic on Julian Wright and we all held out hope that he could possibly earn that spot in the rotation again and finally harness all that talent that made us love him in the first place. But now it looks as if that's no longer the case.
Julian Wright hurting himself some more.
The Hornets summer league roster was announced today and Julian Wright, for the first time since 2007, will not be joining the Hornets summer league team in Las Vegas. It shouldn't come as much of a surprise to some, as Wright mentioned on the Hornets official website at the end of the season that he was going to pass on participating in the Summer League because "summer league is so scoring-oriented. I'm going into my fourth year, and it's not all about me going out to get buckets. But that's kind of what summer league is about, being aggressive all the time and scoring."
While I do kind of see where he's coming from and would probably agree with that assesment, Julian Wright is not doing himself any favors. Coach Monty Williams strongly urged Wright to go back for a fourth summer leage appearance. Wright, true to his word, decided against it and insisted on not participating in the Summer League. I don't think he's in a position of job security where he can make that kind of decision and be confident with his spot in the rotation next season. I don't think Williams is the kind of guy to throw Wright in the doghouse because of this, but Wright could have done himself a lot of favors by appearing. He's already receiving backlash from local publications for his decision not to join the team, and I think this is an indication of his days being counted down in the Big Easy.
We all love Julian Wright. I was strongly encouraged when he was there to greet Monty Williams during Williams' introductory press conference and looked at it as a sign of Wright turning the page. I was strongly encouraged by Wright's talents and Williams' track record that something could be reached to where Wright could still flourish with the Hornets. It no longer looks like that's the case. The selection of Quincy Pondexter in the first round creates a huge logjam at Small Forward. Even though the team would prefer to probably move James Posey's contract, it's much more likely that Julian Wright is to be moved this offseason than Posey. Some team may still take a chance on Wright's talents and the Hornets could always save cash here and there. So in order to assure his spot with the team next season, Wright could have went to the Summer League and impressed Mike Malone, who's said to be caoching the team. But instead, it doesn't look so good for Julian Wright ever playing another game for the Hornets. He's certainly not doing himself any favors.

Summer League
I guess since the trade can’t officially be announced until July 8th that Craig Brackins and Quincy Pondexter wont’ be participating in the Summer League, since it starts on July 9th. Looking at the roster earlier, I saw nobody that had any shot at making the roster. Maurice Ager may get an invite to training camp since the team needs a shooting guard badly and he’s a former first round draft pick. Maybe the Hornets feel they can break through with him.
I’m surprised that Collison is participating again. Thornton said he would because he’s trying to develop a good mid range game in addition to what else he’s able to do (smart move). But I didn’t expect Collison to go back.

That really sucks...
I was assuming there’d be some sort of work around to Brackins and Pondexter, but I guess not. I wonder if teams can add/drop players midway through summer league, and maybe get those two guys on for the second weekend (I believe the schedule is Friday/Sunday/Tuesday/Friday/Saturday)
Yeah
I was wondering that as well. I honestly don’t know how any of that works out because, as I mentioned, nobody on that roster stands much of a chance of making the team and Ager seems like the only possible player to be invited to training camp.

I'm hoping
we’re scouting out players on other teams at Vegas extensively.
Although… fat chance, right? Haha
You Never Know
But I don’t think it’s likely.

LOL!!
at that picture of Julian. Looks like an athletic clutz hitting his darn head. But yeah, Julian to me don’t seem to be willing to do what it takes to become a better NBA player.
@MrWayneKeller, Collison had a good season but he could stand to go there and begin working on trying to cut down on those turnovers.
Also,...
I think Collison likes playing with Marcus so they probably decided together to play again this summer.
Tough Hornets Fan
I love Julian! And cheer for him more than any of the other Hornets. I think, second to Thornton (and obviously CP3), JULIAN is EXCITING to watch! But following the season we just had, where he barely contributed marginally, and a new coach in NO to build around. You disagree to play because ‘its scoring oriented’ and you average how many off the bench? 4?
DUDE!! Go to Vegas!! Hang with Marcus and Darren!! Get some run!! Work on YOUR GAME against some ‘semi-pro’ talent!! And we’ll see you in New Orleans come OCTOBER for Media Day!!
But with this act you confirm yourself as ‘trade bait.’ He already requested a trade mid-last season. Atleast rumors were out that he did. Leave dude, in pro-sports everyone’s talented. From the outside looking in, it looks like COMMITMENT is the key to being ‘solid-pro player.’ Maybe a new organization can re-establish that for you as when we had B Scott..
But who am I to judge you, with 4 pts per game, off the bench, (wait!) off the bench sometime, on a non-playoff team. FOCUS JULIAN!! Show your new coach what you can bring!!

I Agree
Even if that’s his stance on the summer league, if the team is asking you to participate, it definitely won’t hurt you to go there and participate. Even if it is all scoring oriented, Julian Wright still needs work on his jump shot and could just grow to gain some chemistry with Collison and Thornton on the court. I used to always blame Byron Scott for Wright’s struggles, but Bower didn’t give him any increased playing time either. And with Williams’ selection of Pondexter and asking him to participate in the summer league, he must not be overly impressed either.
Again, Wright has everything to gain by going to Summer League. I don’t know why he won’t.

Eh
While I’m definitely not happy about this, it isn’t grounds for an immediate he must go reaction. He’s a young kid who hasn’t been handled very well during his New Orleans tenure. Besides, we haven’t even heard his side of the story yet.
I’m more in favor of letting the new coaching staff seeing if they can work with him first before punting a nice talent away.
Good article, btw. :)
Nailed it on all points
You’re right, even if he doesn’t want to “score” or whatever at Vegas, just being with Thornton, Collison, Brackins, Pondexter, would be a great step forward for him.
Yeah
I mean Julian needs to remember he’s never averaged more than 5 points in the NBA. We all want to see him succeed and there’s no reason he shouldn’t be going.
All NBA players are regular human beings but we gotta expect more out of them because quite frankly this is the best basketball league in the world and the only way to succeed is to never give up and put in all your effort all the time.
I get the sense that JuJu is far to relaxed in the NBA, he needs to take it more seriously. I mean look at Kobe, his life IS basketball and he is working all the time. If Julian can capture half of what Kobe has (in terms of work ethic) then we might then see a vast improvement.

Aubrey Coleman
Im excited to see him play he was Undrafted out of Houston, Coleman led the entire NCAA in scoring with 25.6 points per game. He also led team in rebounding (7.4 rpg) and steals (2.7 spg). This kid can score! i wont be surprised if he surprises every one during summer league. His only problem is he has a real competitive attitude that can get him into trouble some times like it did when he stomped on the guys face during a game in college
I'm anxious...
to see Coleman too. I wonder if he does well will the Hornets invite him to training camp.
Quotes I found on Coleman...
from Hornets director of scouting Brian Hagen…
Aubrey Coleman
"He led the nation in scoring (at the University of Houston) last season (25.6 points per game). He worked out for us in a real competitive workout that also included Xavier Henry, Gordon Hayward, lottery picks. I talked to his agent immediately after the workout and told him that we didn’t have a second-round pick, but that if he went undrafted, we would really like to have him on our summer league team to look at him even further. We were texting during the draft and I told his agent at about pick 50, ‘There are 10 more spots. If he doesn’t get picked, let’s sign him up for summer league.’ We got that done the night of the draft. He’s a high-level scorer. Like all of these guys who didn’t play in the NBA last season, he’s got something to work on. But Aubrey has a solid resume of really being able to put the ball in the basket."

They seem to have some interest in him.
Anybody who has been around Wright knows
that he will never be an extremely hard-working player and he also has such an inflated opinion of himself that it is hard not to laugh at most of what he says
Instead of getting better, we are left with him pouting and crying while sitting at home
He should type his name into Youtube
Most of the plays on there are him getting dunked on and the infamous “JULIAN WRIGGGGGHHHHTTT….OhhhhhhhH!!!!” Missed dunk.
If that was me I’d get up and play ball for 24 hours straight just to put my mind at ease.

Disappointing!
A new coaching staff and offense. You would think he’d want an understanding of the offense sooner rather than later and even lobby for more Julian friendly plays.
JuJu wants out.......
He thinks a change of scenery will help him. Maybe he will come in renewed. Summer league didn’t seem to help him in the past.
That's Kind Of Weak, Though
That’s like saying “well practice didn’t really help me play well this game so I’ll try not practicing for the next game.” It’s simple. You are the easiest subtraction from the roster at the moment and the new head coach is urging you to participate and you still say no. There’s no justification.
