Chris Paul's Comments

As I'm sure everyone reading this knows, Chris Paul met with team officials today.  New Coach Monty Williams, Brand Spanking New GM Dell Demps, and Team President Hugh Weber had their first sit down with CP3 since rumors started spreading that the face of the franchise wanted out.

On his twitter, Chef Paul (best dishes in the NBA) said the following:

"The meeting went well.  It was great to get an opportunity to sit down with Coach Williams, President Weber and our new General Manager Dell Demps. I expressed my desire to win and I like what they said about the direction that they want to take the team.  I have been a Hornet my entire career and I hope to represent the city of New Orleans and state of Louisiana for many years to come."

While the statement is not as strong as, "I'm 100% committed to staying with the Hornets for the rest of my career to help this city win its first NBA championship," his words are quite refreshing given the media frenzy over the past week.

Since being drafted by the team in 2005, Chris has been a great representative of the city and the state.  I also hope he represents New Orleans, Louisiana for many years to come.  I hope he chooses to do that representing while wearing a "Creole blue" jersey.

I guess this will happen now. He is our best trade cip. I hold my fingers crossed for Granger. I dont like Melo personally

i hope so

there’s not enough room for both of them, & we already needed to get better ASAP, but not it’s esp. urgent

Probably.

But I don’t think this needs to happen before the season starts. Maybe — closer to the trade deadline — pursue something that ships out Collison and Peja’s Expiring Contract for a stud and spare parts. My two cents.

Chef Paul (best dishes in the NBA) – awesome!!
Lets enjoy him for the next season and hopefully the full or shortened one after that. If the Hornets arent a winning team by then its his right to leave. I dont blame LBJ for leaving Cleveland (although that was a winning team), just for the way he did it. If Paul leaves after the next two years and gave his all, I’ll follow him whereever he goes and support him (still not more than the Hornets though).

by berlinhornets on Jul 26, 2010 1:21 PM CDT reply actions

We're on the same page...

Couldn’t agree more with your distaste for the WAY LeBron did things, rather than WHAT LeBron did with regards to leaving the Cavs. And I feel the same way about this CP3 mess. He signed a contract in 2008; he should honor that. If — by the end of that contract — the team hasn’t built a winning product around him, it’s completely within Chris’ rights to leave.

Glad you liked the Chef nickname. I’m trying to make that one stick.

Adrian Wojnarowski had this to say:

“Ignore spin out of this Hornets-Chris Paul meeting. He wants out. They don’t want to trade him. Nothing’s changed, except there’s a new GM.”
“All semantics, but Chris Paul will never directly demand a trade. There’s no need; no use. With two years left on deal, he has no leverage.”
“Ultimately, a big question for Chris Paul is this: Does he want out of New Orleans as badly as his new business associates want him out?”

by Nola4Ever on Jul 26, 2010 1:24 PM CDT reply actions

meh

what is that based on woj, i haven’t seen any articles echoing that sentiment (yet! thankfully)

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Jul 26, 2010 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

On probably sources close the situation

Woj has been pretty good of late on nailing down what’s going on in the NBA behind the scenes + is usually first to get info.

Woj

Is a pretty pessimistic fellow when it comes to Chris Paul. But maybe everyone else is being too optimistic?

by Nola4Ever on Jul 26, 2010 1:29 PM CDT reply actions

Nah

Given what we know so far (“NEW ORLEANS — Hornets general manager Dell Demps says star guard Chris Paul did not request a trade during a meeting with New Orleans executives.”), I’d say Woj is definitely being pessimistic on this. Associating CP with LRMR too much, when the connection is a lot more nebulous than he’s made it out to be.

by Rohan on Jul 26, 2010 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

The only good thing I've seen....

come from Wojo over the last week is that article he put up about Paul a few days ago. That is the only good thing. Other than that, he isn’t usually positive about much. Oh well. Schedule should be out next week.

by QueenBee on Jul 26, 2010 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Good For The Hornets

To not cave in to Paul’s reported requests. They knew he had no leverage, this meeting was going to happen anyways, and now this thing is over with, if at least for the time being. People may argue “get something for him before he leaves,” but the offers they’ve received are barely above nothing. So there’s no need to rush and trade him when you can sign players the caliber of Jameer Nelson, Jerryd Bayless, Marcin Gortat or Anthony Randolph with Paul’s cleared cap space. Nobody that was seen as a can’t miss changed the Hornets stance. Good for them.

I’m still not out of the waters with Paul yet. This at least confirms that the team will start the year with him. I’m skeptical of trading Collison but if it nets a really good player I’ll outwardly support it. Collison gives the Hornets a great bench player that they haven’t had since Jannero Pargo and he can really work wonders for a good second unit. You can move expirings for better pieces without moving Collison. You won’t get great players for the expirings but you’ll get good ones to hold you over to next season.

"You play to win the game."

by MrWayneKeller on Jul 26, 2010 1:42 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed

by trading away Collison, Paul could still possibly leave = worst case scenario.

IMO DC can’t put the team on his back and solidify the franchise’s long-term viability like Paul can, & sometimes i wonder how good DC’s stats. would be in a Paul-like game situation. That is, the team was consistently attempting to come from behind when Collison had to play starting floor captain, & i have this nagging thought in the back of my head that he’s not as good against starting units, as he looks on paper (against other teams’ lesser players when playing with a commanding lead against us)

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Jul 26, 2010 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

that would suck though

i’d definitely take a chance on keeping paul than cashing him in for spare parts/the gambler’s opportunity to attempt to mine the draft for someone to replace his leadership/skills/stats. & trying to move forward with DC as our long-term solution at PG

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Jul 26, 2010 8:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Now this I agree with....

I don’t even think Collison has been game planned for yet. Like I’ve heard others say, he and Thornton won’t be sneaking up on anyone this year. I’ve said it before. Collison’s numbers were nice but they didn’t = wins. I don’t see him having Paul’s leadership skills either. As small as CP3 is, he can be rather intimidating at times. And no, I don’t mean guys think he will hit them in the balls or anything like that but teams know that Paul is dangerous on the court. I know Collison started 37 games this season so he has had the experience of playing against starting units but the Hornets still went 14-23 with him as the starting floor general.

"Ultimately, a big question for Chris Paul is this: Does he want out of New Orleans as badly as his new business associates want him out?"

This has crossed my mind many times. I’ve always had the feeling that people outside want him out of NOLA more than he does.

by QueenBee on Jul 26, 2010 1:44 PM CDT reply actions

Also....

while we think the ‘CP3 wants out of NOLA’ trade talks should die down, don’t count on it. It’ll continue as long as he’s in a Hornets uniform. Only thing is, they’ll just have to continue watching him in that Hornets uniform. Enjoy.

by QueenBee on Jul 26, 2010 1:55 PM CDT reply actions

HEY MEDIA!

We got it ok. The Hornets know they aren’t completely out of the woods whereas Chris Paul is concerned but guess what, at least they’ll have a chance now. See, that’s what has these guys upset. They didn’t want Chris Paul to give them that chance. They wanted him out not yesterday but yesteryear. Some of them are sickened that they’ll have to see him in a Hornets uniform yet again.

by QueenBee on Jul 26, 2010 2:07 PM CDT reply actions

I think the Hornets know that keeping...

Collison right now is vital. We fans aren’t always smarter than the GM’s you know? LOL! Not all the time. But like many have said, I’m sure they’d trade Collison if it meant getting a really good player in here. And then we’d have to find another point guard elsewhere is all.

by QueenBee on Jul 26, 2010 2:18 PM CDT reply actions

Will we have more, less, or about the same...

amount of televised games this season? I could say we’ll probably have less with them wanting to show an abundance of John Wall, and the new Big 3. But then we could have more or about the same so they can continue to let the world know about Chris Paul being disgruntled and wanting out.

by QueenBee on Jul 26, 2010 2:22 PM CDT reply actions

Great news.

But what I don’t understand is why did the media want cp3 out of NOLA so badly? It’s not as though they’re a bad team or anything.

by Mayooo on Jul 26, 2010 2:58 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

My opinion is...

is that the media likes reporting on stars in BIG MARKETS. They like stars to be in big markets for whatever reason. I guess it’s because more people will see their reports that way. Of course it’s all about them you know? LOL!

Even if he had said this, how much water would it hold? I’m pretty sure Lebron once said he won’t stop until he brings a championship to Cleveland. But guess what? He stopped.

by QueenBee on Jul 26, 2010 3:28 PM CDT reply actions

yeah definitely

it’s a fairly pro forma statement, & as other here have pointed out it’s not like he has a lot of power to leverage a trade this year. but we should be worried, this is probably CP3’s best attempt to forewarn us that if we don’t pay attention to his desire to stop lollygagging around signing crappy players and/or bad contracts, he’s not going to wait another 5 years for us to replace ownership/front office management/floor management & have a go at it again.

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Jul 26, 2010 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not worried....

worried just isn’t the correct word for me. As a fan, there’s no sense in me worrying. Whatever happens is going to happen. As much as I like CP and the Hornets, I worry about more important things in life. I understand what you mean though.

Not surprising consider the moves by most of the other organizations. Gotta figure Demps is going to have to do something pretty big between now and next off season to attempt to retain CP3 (unless Dimes, Buckets and the rookies turn into all-stars)

Fletcher Mackel is something else. It’s already been said by John Reid in his latest article ….

“Paul doesn’t plan to respond to any questions about Monday’s meeting or his future in New Orleans when his camp opens Tuesday at Tulane.”

http://www.nola.com/hornets/index.ssf/2010/07/new_orleans_hornets_confident.html

So then Mackerel (I think this is what I’ll call him from now on) tweets this…

If @oneandonlycp3 does not answer questions regarding his future in NOLA at his camp..its simple..he wants out bad and is as good as gone!
about 2 hours ago via web

Now he already knows that Chris won’t answer any questions about this so why does he feel the need to tweet this? Does it appear to anyone else that Mackerel wants CP out of NOLA? And if so, why?

by QueenBee on Jul 27, 2010 12:55 AM CDT reply actions

I really think if you can somehow turn Peja and Collison into something, all will be good.

I can’t blame CP3 for wanting help. He’s too good to not be in a deep playoff team. I’ll be curious to see what demps can do. He is highly regarded and as a Warriors fan, i can’t but love Paul and New Orleans. If we can’t win, I’d rather see you or Oklahoma City than the barrage of media darlings.

You guys have a good one in Steph Curry. I love watching him shoot that ball, except when he does it against the Hornets that is. :)

by QueenBee on Jul 27, 2010 1:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I'm hoping we turn it around this year

The biggest thing was a new owner. I realize you got your own despot, but he was nothing compared to Chris Cohan. 16 years, 1 playoff and a straight dismantling of that team would say it all. Unwilling to spend into the cap EVER, and hiring a barrage of horrible GMs and consistent gimmick marketing. Ugh

Now that we got DLee and Biedrins should return to health you shouldn’t butcher us on the boards anymore (remember David West having like 25 rebounds at will on us last year?)

I still remember Rookie-Sophmore game where CP3 and Monta lit it up. I miss that Monta though I’m optomistic we’ll see a return. So much of last year was poor attitude of players because of horrible toxic situations starting with Stephen Jackson.

Still i toyed around with two trade ideas for you….
Collison, Peja Posey for Ben Gordon, Tayshaun Prince
Collison, Peja, Posey for Granger + Dunleavey (or Murphy, whoever they value less)

Having seen the dunmurphy sisters play, neither will do anything for you to want them, just an expiing. Both are probably still unrealistic and would mostly be be motivated by finance for opposite team. Unure which would benefit New Orleans more. I kind of like the Detroit one, though Granger could be like Gasol, the league doesn’t realize how good he is cause of how poor a team he plays for.

by tafkasam on Jul 27, 2010 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions

And with patience...

I expect Atlanta and MEmphis to have some sort of sale after awarding worst contracts imaginable.

Collison

is essential for the Hornets and in Paul’s absence due to injury,he was magnificent last season. He will continue to improve and I have no doubt that if he blossoms, New Orleans will be fine. However, as Gregg Doyel articulated in his column Monday, I feel that Paul’s behavior is quite uncharacteristic for who I believe he really is. I hope that everything works out for the best for you Hornets fans. Again, keep the faith.

I agree in that his behavior is very uncharacteristic. I keep telling myself it’s like the Invasion of the Mind and Body Snatchers got a hold of him. LOL.

How much do you think Collison can improve though? He’s already done 4 full years of college. He’s still young though but he didn’t come in like a lot of guys that were one and done. Collison definitely has to learn to cut down on the turnovers. But then again even the great Steve Nash is usually one of the top players in the league in turnovers.

Just don't get all the sour feelings towards Collison

Hornets fans have been spoiled by the likes of CP3. However, trust me that the majority of teams out there would love to have Collison on their roster. Ridiculous to get on a rookie about his biggest weakness at this point too. Pretty much was thrown into the starting lineup playing against the best in the world on a nightly basis – I’d say he did AWESOME.

No sour feelings...

I love Collison. I’m happy he’s a Hornet. I’m not convinced that he’s done anything to make Chris Paul ‘expendable’ though as some seem to think. He did do awesome but we weren’t winning games. I thought that’s what it was all about. Winning games. I’m in no way saying we should trade him. I want to keep him. If he had come into the league and the Hornets upped their wins by 20, then that might be saying more but that didn’t happen. I don’t see sour feelings in my post about Collison. I’m pretty sure that just about everyone would agree in that he needs to work on his turnovers. Other than that, one certainly can’t complain about what Collison brings to the table.
