New Orleans' Trade Exceptions

Monty Williams speaking at Dell Demps' press conference yesterday:

"There are some creative ways- I’ll use Dell’s words- we can come up with a number of trades that can help this team."

"I think you need more shooting. Going into the year with Marcus as our only 2 guard, we’re certainly going to have to shore up that spot. Nobody is the starting 2 guard for this team. That spot is up for grabs right now, and guys are going to have to work to get that spot. We definitely need somebody on our roster to step up and take that spot. And there may be a creative trade to fill that void."

All summer, we've seen NBA writers (and Fletcher Mackel) pump out trade rumor after trade rumor, regarding the Hornets. It's been open season on the entire roster- Chris Paul, David West, Emeka Okafor, etc, down to the little guys like Aaron Gray. One aspect that hasn't been explored much is the use of trade exceptions.

Star-divide

Put simply, a trade exception is a sort of credit a team receives through an imbalanced trade. These exceptions generally expire a year after their acquisition. For the purposes of future trades, they serve essentially as player salaries. In a recent example, Al Jefferson was moved to Utah for a $13 million trade exception (and no actual players).

A look at our current exceptions, when they were acquired, and when they expire:

Exception Size

Acquired Through

Expires

$4,405,000

Rasual Butler to LAC

Aug. 12th, ‘10

$2,801,198

Hilton Armstrong to SAC

Feb. 18th, ‘11

$2,074,000

Antonio Daniels to MIN

Oct. 23rd, ‘10

$1,107,572

Devin Brown to CHI

Jan. 25th, ‘11

$902,500

Tyson Chandler to CHA

Aug. 1st, ‘10

$736,420

Bobby Brown to LAC

Jan. 26th, ‘11

Total: $11,666,690

Essentially, New Orleans could have made their own offer for Al Jefferson (exceptions + Songaila), if they'd been willing to pay the luxury tax. I don't mean that as an indictment (ownership still too much of a mess) but more as an indicator of how valuable trade exceptions can be. If the Chouest takeover had come to fruition when we thought it would, who knows. Wrong. Thanks berlinhornets.

Either way, the biggest of those exceptions expires in around two weeks. The Hornets can still make a run at a player another team has given up on. The key, of course, is "player that's been given up on." Denver is not dumping Carmelo Anthony's $17 million a year if New Orleans had a big enough exception, Songaila, and Julian Wright, nor is Indiana tossing away Danny Granger's $11 million a year for $11 million in exceptions. The Hornets would have to target teams that are looking for financial flexibility and the opportunity to rebuild. That said, there are options out there. Let's hope exceptions are the "creative ways" Demps and Williams refer to because, used properly, they can be powerful.

Rudy Fernandez!

Portland is trying to move him

He’d be perfect. Get some Spanish flavor in here. He has great size for a 2-guard and is only 25 years old. I think he could be had for the exception created by the Devin Brown trade. Hopefully Portland would do this without getting a player back. They are pretty deep at the 2 and the 3 spot and probably could use the financial relieve for an otherwise redundant piece.

We have one of the richest owners in the world who does not care about paying

the Luxury tax. Why would we dump him for cap relief? Paul Allen is also quoted as saying that he would rather Rudy rot at the end of the bench then trade him for nothing.

Apparently

The Knicks, Bulls, and Celtics in trade talks for him. I think an exception and a future first rounder would be enough to get it done, though with his desire to go back to Europe, dunno if that’s worth it.

“Denver is not dumping Carmelo Anthony’s $17 million a year on trade exceptions, Songaila, and Julian Wright, nor is Indiana tossing away Danny Granger’s $11 million a year for $11.7 million in exceptions.”
Problem with that is that a team cannot combine trade exceptions. Each trade exception has to be sued separately and cannot be combined to get one high contracted player.

Agh you are right

I asked Larry Coon about this once, but I guess I my question poorly

No problem. Even the best make mistakes. ;-) keep up the good work

Shannon Brown!

I’m not sure if he’s signed yet, but he’d be a good fit in NOLA.

Agreed

Apparently LA is trying to trade away Vujacic so they can retain Brown

by Rohan on Jul 28, 2010 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Vujacic

Wouldn’t be a bad add either

by Afro Jr on Jul 28, 2010 12:34 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Eh... too expensive

~6 million a year is pretty steep for a fairly one dimensional player. LA is giving him away for free with a first round pick.. but I dunno how many teams will bite

by Rohan on Jul 28, 2010 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea it is a lil expensive

But he would add some size to shooting guard spot and we could use one of our trade exceptions that are about to expire

by Afro Jr on Jul 28, 2010 12:47 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Gross

Vujacic? Really? Would he start? He would just make the Lakers better & saddle us with more financial constraints we can ill afford given CP3’s desire to become competitive immediately. I’d take Brown, but like others i think a trade must be made or is already in the works

6 million dollar Le Machine

…. No thanks. Peja is taller , and we might as well try to get something for our 15 million …. at least for the first half of the season.

I don't expect NO to add more salary before moving both West and Posey.

With those two out of the way, the front office will have a good estimate of how much to set aside for a max contract, and how much is left over to spend on role players.

"I've hacked into your brain. You're throwing a party and no one's showing up."

What does creative mean?

I think it means a multi-team deal involving some heavy turnover on the roster, so like 3 players. I think it’ll be trading some good players (maybe dc or west) for various forms of junk: posey (in the trunk), okafor (in the wallet).

We shall see I suppose.
