Rasual Butler Stays in Los Angeles [Updated]

Pretty interesting news out of LA:

The Los Angeles Clippers re-signed forward Rasual Butler. Terms of the deal were not announced, but a source close to the negotiations confirmed it was a one-year deal.

The old Hornets regime clearly thought of Butler as a starting caliber guard, and while it's unclear if the new one feels similarly, Butler was surely an option for 2010-2011.

With the signings of Ronnie Brewer, Marquis Daniels, Tony Allen, and now Butler, the Hornets options for a bigger off-guard continue to dwindle. For the time being, it appears Mo Evans will remain with the Hawks and Josh Howard will remain with the Wizards. The Lakers are apparently trying to give away Sasha Vujacic's contract so they can retain Shannon Brown

If New Orleans is indeed looking for a starter at SG, it's becoming increasingly obvious a trade must be made.

UPDATE: Aubrey Coleman, the nation's leading scorer in 2009-2010, and a member of the Hornets' summer league team, has just signed in Turkey with Aliaga. Hat-tip to Ridiculous Upside.

I said it before...

I will say it again. Why not take a shot on Rashad McCants? From what I have been reading he is not a bad guy. Apparently he kept getting talked to about his lack of smile but if that is his biggest flaw I could accept a frown while he scores double digits off the bench and plays some good D.

Ahh, good call

I’d totally forgotten about him.

You know, if Dell Demps’ first move is getting Rashad McCants, I will be thrilled. I’ve always loved his game. Apparently he was going to be on CLE’s summer league roster but skipped it because his mother became sick. McCants could be perfect for this team..

A quote from a July 28th, 2010 (today) story from the Asheville Citizen Times:
McCants says he works out and plays pickup ball daily, either in LA or Las Vegas.

He still has hopes that he’ll earn an invite to the Cavaliers’ training camp in the fall.

"Cleveland’s always been a supporter, and I’m still actively pursuing a chance to get on their roster," he said. "Right now, I’m just ready to take any good offer that comes on the table."

ESPN Article

This is an article on him from the new ESPN Mag. I believe it is insider only but if you got it try to read it, it is a good read.

Born to be hated, dying to be loved

Some quotes for those that don't have it:
The common refrain about McCants’ predicament is that it has never been about his game. “He’s a pure talent with a high basketball IQ,” former Wolves GM McHale says of his former shooting guard. “Beautiful stroke, great body, everything. His problem was giving himself up to the team.”
McCants, meanwhile, wonders how a player can “get $25 million for being just a shooter,” or why guys with criminal records — McCants has never been arrested or suspended — somehow get more consideration than he does. “I’m out of the league because of facial expressions?” he asks. “Players get arrested or demand trades, and I’m the one they call difficult?”
Tar Heel blood brothers Larry Brown and George Karl barely give him the time of day. Some GMs won’t even get on a conference call with him. “Everybody said I wasn’t a good fit,” he says with genuine sadness. “It felt like I had nowhere to turn. It felt like I died.”
In his first two seasons McCants earned an on-court rep that didn’t exactly sync up to the profile either: a quick-trigger shooting guard physical enough to defend small forwards. He bonded with the team’s superstar, Kevin Garnett, the two frequently working out together after practice. When McCants awoke from knee surgery in 2006, KG was sitting at the foot of the bed. In 2007-08, under first-year coach Randy Wittman, McCants began to blossom, selected by his peers as a team captain.
In New York he was often a guest of Jay-Z’s at 40/40. He stood onstage with Lil Wayne, texted with Chris Paul, partied in Miami with Shaq and D-Wade. His exterior, once Velcro, was suddenly Teflon, all the negatives no longer sticking. Or so he thought.
By training camp in September 2008, the mood had shifted. McCants and Wittman were now on very different pages, and with the coach looking to put his stamp on the team, McCants’ star quickly faded. He couldn’t move without Wittman getting annoyed… The situation quickly spiraled. Wittman stripped McCants of his captaincy at a team meeting, bestowing the duties on Jefferson, Mike Miller and Randy Foye. “A couple of those guys didn’t even want the responsibility,” says McCants, who thought Wittman was trying to break him. Stunned and embarrassed gave way to depressed and confused. “Nobody would talk to me,” McCants says. “I didn’t know what was going on.” (Wittman says he doesn’t remember the incident. “I don’t even recall his being captain,” he says. But several players, including Jefferson and Love, say they remember it distinctly.)
And don’t get his father, James, started. James, who, with his wife, Brenda, raised Rashad and his two younger sisters in a tidy, middle-class neighborhood in Asheville, N.C., strictly enforced evening curfews and made sure his son did his chores and homework before hitting the blacktop. “He had it together as a kid,” James says, “because he knew if he didn’t he had to deal with me.” James says people often misread his son initially but warm up once they get to know him.
Love turns to his locker neighbor, Brian Cardinal. “Why do you think Rashad is out of the league?” he asks. “I’m not touching that,” Cardinal says before walking away. Another player, who declined to be named, walks up and slaps his own arms. “Because of these right here,” he says referring to McCants’ tattoos. “He lives by those.” On their old teammate’s right biceps is written BORN TO BE HATED, on the left DYING TO BE LOVED.
As he begins shooting drills one thing fast becomes evident: This game does not belong on this floor. The near flawless mechanics — squared shoulders, high release, perfect follow-through — are designed for an NBA arena. Nowhere in the change-of-direction dribbles and stepbacks is movement wasted. With each feathery shot, his presence here becomes all the more strange. “When I met him I asked what he did to piss everybody off,” says Abunassar. “I said, ‘You must have been a real ass. Did you blow up somebody’s house?’” GMs may not love McCants, but they’re all over Abunassar. “They don’t ask about his game,” he says. “They ask about his head. I tell them all he needs is the chance.”
McCants takes matters into his own hands. He calls GMs himself. He tells them he wants to look them in the eye. He knows he has to sell himself. He really does care about what people think. And instead of waiting for a camp invite, he’s accepted an offer to play summer league with the Cavs — for around $100 a day. At least it’ll give him more time to prove his worth.
Yeah, humility stings like a son of a bitch. There are no more calls from Lil Wayne or Jay-Z. Chris Paul is harder to reach, too. It’s what happens when you’re on the outside looking in.

McCants dreams of carving out a niche as a sixth man. It’s a good living, he thinks, and he knows he’s up to the task. “There isn’t a 2-guard in the league who can guard me,” he says. "Not one.

Lets Get him

I knew a lil about him and liked before but after reading all that i want him even more. He is gona be hungry to prove himself and thats the type of guys we need

Ehhhh

McCants not the kind of option that will excite me. I guess beggars can’t be choosers at this point (sucks that Coleman went to Turkey. I’m sure he’ll get paid mor ethere) but I’d like to believe there’s a bigger plan in place than signing Rashad McCants to take up a spot this season.

Ugh

The list isn’t very appealing. Maybe there’d be a way to work out Shannon Brown on the team but I’d even take someone like Michael Finley over Rashad McCants. There’s only so much of “it’s everyone else’s fault that I didn’t succeed” that I can stomach and McCants has been that kind of guy for a long time. Seems like a nice guy, but was overrated in college and didn’t show much outside of a potential to score the basketball.

This is going to sound ugly, but I’d even take guys like Michael Finley, Devin Brown (I know y’all hate him) and Trenton Hassell over McCants.

Am I the only one who feels that McGrady could work well? Although, he didn’t take the job in Chicago probably because he wanted a lot of minutes and he is injury prone.

I don’t know, the more I talk about it the more I realize the only upgrade they can make is in a trade. They’re better off giving all of the minutes to Paul, Collison and Thornton than adding some more dead weight on the team.

Tracy McGrady wants to be a starter (apparently one of the reasons Chicago kicked him to the curb so quickly). And I definitely don’t want him complaining and eating Marcus’ minutes… that would just be plain awful.

Finley’s 37 now and has been pretty garbage for a while, Trenton Hassell was easily one of the worst guards in the entire league last year, and Devin Brown… ugh.

You know, I agree with you that “there’s only so much of it’s everyone else’ fault.” I really do. The thing is, I also read that article and see that the main guys who’ve criticized McCants are also guys that I don’t like either through personal interaction or through hearing friends who’ve interacted with them- guys like Rick Carlisle and Randy Wittman. And that makes me realize that, yes, McCants has personality flaws, but he also landed in bad spot after bad spot.

“didn’t show much outside of a potential to score the basketball.”

That’s the thing though… he IS very skilled. He rarely turns the ball over, he gets to the line, and for a guy that shoots as often as he does, he’s really pretty efficient from the floor. New Orleans obviously doesn’t seem outwardly the best environment in the NBA right now… but I’d really like McCants here, under Demps and Williams.

This team needs to take a couple risks here or there if they want to keep Paul. A guy like Finley or Brown or Hassell is literally going to provide literally nothing. A guy like McCants might also provide nothing or even negative value, but the potential is so clearly there.

lol I think I'm biased

I’m a UTSA student, have met Devin Brown on numerous occasions and always liked him. Although he was just painful to watch when he was in the game. He’s one of those guys that you’d look at and say “he even averages 9 points a game?”

I see what you’re saying about the whole potential thing. There’s just names that do and don’t register with certain people and McCants doesn’t with me. Mo Evans doesn’t either, honestly, and God forbid someone like Flip Murray is given another chance.

Who knows.

He looks great here,

but WP48 kind of abuses him though. If he can play ball at an average level and be coached, I think he would be a good fit for the team. I’m rooting for him regardless…

As far as this off season goes, I think the team actually has some pretty good players (not enough to compete for a championship this season, sorry Chris, but good enough to make the playoffs … barring injury …).

I’m not a fan of Butler so I’m glad L.A. is paying him and not New Orleans.

I figure if the team can hold on to Paul, Okafor (the two best players – sorry Okafor haters), West and Thornton by this time next season, the rookies develop (at least Pondexter) and they shed dead weight salary (and dead weight players, sorry Songaila) without adding dead weight salary or players, I’m thinking they could get a surprise trade and/or free agent signing done next year.

I kind of hope they take a chance on Hines too.

But hat’s just me though.

He put up a 112 ORtg on 23.3 USG% in his last 25 game stint

with Sacramento. Wins Produced inherently undervalues shot creation, a skill that McCants excels at, and one that the Hornets could use at off guard (as awesome as Thornton is, he’s way more efficient playing off the ball than on it).

Agree with you on everything else… Chris Paul wanting out kind of sabotaged what could have been a really good thing… Brackins, Pondexter, Thornton, Collison all getting better around West and Okafor, plus the opportunity to add a FA next summer.

I like this Mccants idea....

….. I think it couldn’t hurt , and if anyone can get his mind right it would be Monty.

Yeah,

WP48 actually rates him above average during that same stretch with Sacramento. I feel like something is there with him, but I have never watched him play … I’m wondering what is accounting for the differences.

I’m hoping the Hornets pick him up, find out, correct it and get him helping the team to a championship. Like you, I think he could provide a valuable contrast to Thornton. (still would have a size problem but Paul is undersized so size isn’t EVERYTHING, heh … I hope)

A one year deal on a guy with talent and something to prove can’t set you back any more than a two year deal with Gray.
(I do like the Gray signing though – [size]. speaking of WP48, Gray with the Hornets last year? Wow.)

Or any more than a one year deal on a guy with talent and something to prove but never played. (I’m looking at you Diogu)

As for the Paul sabotage, I kind of agree, but maybe it was a means of wresting some control away from Shinn (most agree he is a terrible owner. I, however, have no opinion). People hate James but I think Miami’s big signings were a result of an agreement between Wade and Riley. Wade re-signs with the Heat and Riley says he can and will get whatever else the team needs.

But I haven’t in NOLA or the states for three years so what do know.

Thornton

Thornton will be out starting shooting guard and I think we are set at that position.

We could use one more tall shooting guard off the bench.

Rasual Butler

As for Rasual, it was a shame that we lost him. He was a real contributor and he fit in well in our system with his athletic defense and long range shooting.

Our defense continued to deteriorate after we lost him and Chandler.

One aspect for which Rasual is very underrated is his ability to hit the clutch shot (often a 3 pointer). He has a number of game winners under his belt with both NO and LA.
