Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Sunday Discussion: The Trade

An open thread for anything that hasn't been talked about yet. Starting lineup permutations? Preferred bench rotation? Should Pondexter or Ariza see minutes at off guard? How do you feel about the (presumed) disappearance of the Hornets 2-guard look? Does Monty Williams have calmer eyes than Derek Jeter?

Haha yeap

My friend is a big Pats fan, he’s pretty annoying when they are winning. But at the moment hes a bit more subdued because of the uncertainty of the Pats situation (transition period.)

Transition Period?!?!?!?!?!?!

The only transition is that Maroney is going to the Pro Bowl this year.

See? He’s allready on his way!

I don't know

He’s good, but is he Pro-Bowl good? No.

When you think about it, he has to be one of top 3 running backs in the AFC which he is not.

He’s not better than Chris Johnson, not better than Maurice Jones-Drew, nor Ray Rice and in my view I don’t think he’s better than Jamaal Charles who I rate highly.

Thornton should start for now

Because we don’t have someone else. Ariza should be at SF full-time. If the bench struggles early on this season, I could see Bellinelli starting and Thornton being moved to the 6th man spot.

by Hornets78 on Aug 15, 2010 5:44 AM CDT reply actions

I'd rather have Thornton play every minute that CP doesn't....

Thornton has proven he can generate his own offense, Everyone else benefits more from CP to get them open looks. Of course, MT and CP will be out there together for a lot of minutes even if he comes off the bench. I think we need to keep 2 of our 3 offensive initiators (CP, DW, MT) on the floor at all times.

Start: Oak, DW, TA, Marco, and CP
Bench 1: Earl Barron, DW, Q, MT, and Patty Mills
Bench 2: Oak, Songaila, Peja, MT, CP
Finish if game is contested: Oak, DW, TA, MT, and CP
Finish if game is really over: Gray, Diogu, Brackins, Pondexter, Mills

Gray is used mainly for kryptonite duty.

by NOEngineer on Aug 15, 2010 7:08 AM CDT reply actions

I'd love to get Mills

It could happen with the Portland connection, but I don’t know what the deal is on his contract. Apparently he doesn’t really have one and Portland have his rights but can choose to sign him before the season. I don’t know if other teams can sign Patty, he may be restricted (that would mean other teams could) but I don’t know.

What I do know is that Portland at the moment has a tonne of point guards. And from what I’ve read it appears Patty will lose his spot to Armon Johnson a 2010 rookie who fits into the Portland scheme better.

What we get from Patty is a a flyer who can run up and down the court with ease. He can be great at fast breaks but sometimes it leads to his biggest weakness, turnovers. Now he’s not commiting any mortal sins, but similar to Collison Patty seems to force the issue a little bit to much and make the wrong decision. I think it can be worked on but still a bit of a concern.

Mills can run the point as he is a good dribbler and can work the pick and roll to some degree of success. He’s a good passer but his biggest strength (aside from his speed) is his shooting.

Many view Patty as a hybrid 1-2 Guard. He’s to small to play SG, but doesn’t quite possess the wholesome ability of a point guard. I think patty can be a 40% career three point shooter given the opportunity and he’s done wonders with his shooting ability. I think he has a world of potential and should be considered as a point guard backup to CP.

I thought some may want my view on him as I have watched him quite a bit (since I am Australian). So there’s some info on him.

Okay....

WTF is the connection to the dirty birds?
I looked at Mills in this years summer league , and he seems really talented offensively…. How is he defensively though?

Horrid on defense

I wouldn't say horrid

He can sometimes get outmuscled by opponents but he’s got the skills to become an average defender. He’s quick enough to not let people blow by him but sometimes people just use their strength.

Patty

Portland made a qualifying offer to Patty which makes him restricted basically. If any team offers him a contract, Portland can choose to match it.

by sXe hXc AMF on Aug 15, 2010 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea that's what I thought happened.

But to me it doesn’t make sense. They have like 4 point guards on their roster with Mills so to me it seems like they are going to send him to the D-League which would be a waste.

Barron?

He’s not even on the team yet. Plus, I trust Gray at times more than Okafor. He won’t fumble a pass and blow and easy layup or dunk and he will box out, make better passes, and even hit his FTs.

by Hornets78 on Aug 15, 2010 9:02 AM CDT reply actions

Aaron Gray can't ...

HELP BUT BOX OUT! LOL!! Because he IS the size of a big box out there. LOL! Anyone hear anything about how his offseason is going? I like the bulk he brings but he just needs better conditioning.

by QueenBee on Aug 15, 2010 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Thornton + Ariza on the wings

unless Peja comes into camp in miraculous shape. Stoj should start then as older players don’t like coming off the bench cold. I don’t mind Marcus being the 6th man and could finish games much like Jason Terry has in his career.

I hope....

Peja’s offseason has been going well health wise because chances are we’ll have him at least until trade deadline.

by QueenBee on Aug 15, 2010 12:35 PM CDT reply actions

Peja

I’d really like to see him gone. Problem with that is finding somebody nuts enough to take on his outrageous expiring contract. Plus, getting anything decent for him will be a challenge. I think he probably stays until the deadline, and Id be really surprised if he’s not moved by then. 14.3 million is a lot for an over the hill starter.

And what about Songalia? Also an expiring that’s gotta be worth something to somebody at the deadline.

None of this matters though if the Hornets aren’t going to get something decent in return.

by thecobb8 on Aug 15, 2010 2:25 PM CDT reply actions

Teams trade for....

outrageous expirings all the time. If Bower was able to sometimes turn water to wine (or maybe apple juice) then I’m sure Demps will work something out. Not only am I looking forward to this season but also looking forward to next offseason when the Hornets have money to make some nice deals.

by QueenBee on Aug 15, 2010 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

I'm resigning myself

to seeing a starting line-up of:

PG: Paul
SG: Thornton
SF: Ariza
PF: West
  C: Okafor

I probably don’t have as much confidence in Thornton as other fans (at least not yet) as I worry that he becomes a guy like Carmelo Anthony or Iverson. Scorers like Wade and even Bryant do more than score in big numbers, (not that Thornton is a Wade, or a Bryant even, but my point is … ) I hope Thornton can focus on and add the other things to his game that equal a better team and more wins. It’s his sophomore year though so we’ll see. Fingers crossed.

West, I think, is actually pretty average with occasional above average years. Here’s to him having a belief in the team this year, a return to his rebounding ways and a little effort on defense. Or that the team can finagle an upgrade.

I hope Okafor returns to form. (I really, really feel like he will) He and Paul are the two players I have the most confidence in right now. (sorry Okafor haters)

We all hope to get the Ariza-as-great-role-player from his time with the Lakers. We probably all really hope he gives us more (just not the Houston sense of more).

and a bench of:

PG: unknown
SG: Belinelli
SF: Pondexter/Peja
PF: Songaila/Brackins
  C: Gray

Outside of Pondexter (who I like very, very much), I do not like this bench (sorry Peja). I think Pondexter projects better out of college than Collison did and (at least) come next year, I feel like he could start over Ariza and develop into a starter at least as good as Collison. I’d also rather see Pondexter get minutes at off-guard.

At least Belinelli, Songaila and Gray (and probably Peja) will be Craig Mack. So it’s not hopeless…

I Just Want To Say

How much I hate vague comments. If I hear another person say “the Hornets should have gotten more for Darren Collison” without anyone offering a LEGITIMATE RETURN then I’m going to explode.

In secretly wanting Jannero Pargo to be the back up point guard the team brings in? Or is my nostalgia getting the best of me?

The team got so much better through this trade. DC was my favourite Hornet last year and it pains to see him leave. But Ariza is the best player we could have gotte for DC. And unload Posey at the same time is great. Remember, DC was the 21st pick and played half a seasin. Demps has to assume Paul is healthy and will log around 35 to 38 minutes per game. DCs value would have decreased dramatically with the new season under way. Waiting until the deadline trade was not an option even though I had been dreaming about a potential Granger pick up too.
I really like Ariza and Bellinelli and what they bring to the table. I am actually envisioning Marcus coming off the bench as a sixth man.
starters:

Paul
Bellinelli
Ariza
DWest
Okafor

The bench would be great offensively and defensively with Marcus, Peja, Pondexter (especially defense), Gray (I like him a lot as a back up), Bracks …

We still need one or two big men and a back up point:

Earl Watson (already 31 but capable for around 12 minutes a game)
Iverson (really old and totally changes the dynamic of the second unit, but Id buy his jersey immediately)
Amundson (27, a hustler and defender with a limited but decent offesnive game)
Ike (I still wanna see what he can do, should be ready, could be a beast)

We still need another center. I am thinking that Demps might call up somebody from the D-League. Lets see what happens.

We traded the wrong PG...

What will we do in 2 years when CP3 pulls the “LeBron” on us??? We should have traded him not Collison.

Yuck

You guys still lurking around, huh?

So much can happen in 2 years that it’s crazy to assume this as a forgone conclusion. Besides the Hornets becoming a championship contender, have you cared to consider that the Miami experiment could fail?

Traded the wrong PG? Don't make me laugh.

We’re not a playoff team without CP3 this year. We are with him. Sorry I’d rather try to strike gold while we have a superstar who is actually capable of leading us to the promised land. You take the risk and suck it up.
