Our New Backup PG
[Thanks to berlinhornets and Qblank119 for breaking the news. For now, I'm assuming Shakur will be third string. Either way, this is a monumentally historic day for those who are fans of both 2Pac and the Hornets. -Rohan]
According to DraftExpress we have our new PG from the bench. DraftExpress wrote:
Mustafa Shakur has agreed to a partially guaranteed contract with the New Orleans Hornets, reliable sources tell DraftExpress.
They contiue raving about the signing and think it was a great move by Demps. I tend to believe DraftExpress and their talent evaluation, since they watch all these players and their developments even whene they are not in the NBA anymore. Shakur played in the NBADL last season. So we have our first D-League call up now.
In their eyes he seems to be a high reward low risk signing. I tend to agree.

Don't Know Too Much About Him
Being the brainless loyal fan that I am, I’ll enjoy the move and give it a chance. I’ll wait for Rohan’s post because he always seems to pull out some information about people I have no idea about from thin air.
I do vaguely remember Shakur from his college days at Arizona, but haven’t heard from him at all since then.
"You play to win the game."
He played in Poland and Spain before joining the Tulsa 66ers last season. There he averaged 20.8 points, 7.1 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 steals in 40 games and was an NBA D-League Western Conference All-Star. He just turned 26. I am hopeful. According to Rivals, CP3 and Shakur were the two top rated PGs in the their draft. He probably just needed time.

Did Some Reading
A lot of reports called him a good athlete who couldn’t shoot, wasn’t a good half court player and played out of control at times. He’s said to have really, really worked on those things since college but obviously potential was/is there. I agree that it’s a low risk/high reward setting.

I'd much rather him
than some retread. All we need from him is 13-15 minutes of solid play on a nightly basis….anything else I would consider a bonus.

John Reid's latest tweet confirms:
“PG Mustafa Shakur signed a partially guaranteed contract with the Hornets. But Hornets are still seeking to sign another backup PG.”
He also tweeted: “Mustafa Shakur’s contract with #Hornets basically just gives him a chance to compete for a roster spot at training camp.” I dont really understand that. Is it really necessary to give him a contract, albeit non-guaranteed, if it is basically a only a camp-invite?

Not 100% sure
But I think training camp + non guaranteed contract is a standard combo thing. I think.
Still Liking
the organizations committment in trying to upgrade the talent. I’ve long wished for more NBA teams to dip into the D-League pool instead of signing a declining player simply because of the experience factor. Hopefully Shakur ends up being one of those guys who has only needed a solid chance. Only thing I remember about him was he was one of the biggest recruits out of high school (think he was like a top 5 recruit).

Other interesting thing is
He played at UA with Marcus Williams, a Dell Demps pick and one I’d assume New Orleans would be interested in. Maybe they’re thinking of reuniting that college backcourt (though it wouldn’t be the most inspiring pair of signings)
I doubt that'd be the case
Unless Demps really believes the both of them could contribute significantly in the NBA.

It’s a post-game interview. He knows several superstars in the league from the McDonalds High School All American game. Seems like a pretty good guy. Also, to add to the stats above, he posted a PER of 19.00 last season in the NBADL, which is good to see especially from a point guard. He’s got a good shot to make the roster.
Now we’ve got to get Lou Amundson on board and we’re looking really nice.
Cool video, thanks
Obviously, it’s mostly him running fast breaks, but wild initial impressions are that I like his athleticism and vision and I really, really dislike his shot form, haha
Oh and he does seem like a good guy
Haven’t done any real research yet, but I like the move more and more
Like Berlin said
Low Risk High Reward, might as well go for it. I mean who knows maybe he turns out to be what this team needed as a backup PG. But I think what makes this truly a good move is the fact the guy can run the break. If he happens to be our backup and he gets 10 minutes a game (absolute maximum I suppose), if he can run the floor, make the correct decisions and just manage things then I think his value is high.

Well said....
I wasn’t overly impressed with any of his passes(compared to Belinellis) because they were pretty simple reads , but there is VALUE in simplicity. 10-15 minutes a night with minimal mistakes will add value to the roster and his career. I also like how slowly but surely our roster is transforming from old to young….this is a good thing.
I agree, I really like how the teams centers around all these twenty-somethings now and not around veterans who are in there thirties. This starts to be a team where every player already has some expirience, but still has enough years left to develope as an individual and as a team, too. Like Sir Monty said about Ariza: “a young veteran”- the whole team starts to look like a young veteran team.

LOL
i also don’t understand. with his PG analysis, he chose Lawson to be the main defender. with the SG, he chose Mayo. how about with the SF crop, our very own ariza?! OH NO
The signing gets great marks from various outlets. Ridiculous Upside and FanHouse really like the Mustafa in the role he is going to play in New Orleans. I like this kid more and more. Lets just hope he doesnt disappoint in training camp and in the real games.
I hope the talks to Amundson progress. I would love to have him on the team.
