The 2010 @tH Approval Ratings: Darren Collison
Positives: 16.5 PER, 85% from the line, 40% from three, one assist in every three offensive possessions, 23% usage, almost 55% true shooting, started 37 games in Chris Paul's absence, proved a very capable on-the-ball defender, especially against quicker guards, extremely low 1.6 personal fouls/36 minutes
Negatives: 18.9% turnover rate, 3.0 FTA/36 minutes probably a little low given how often he played in the paint
My Grade: 4

Collison
He definitely suprised me last year and filled in admirably for Paul. Obviously there is still work to do for him but he looks like he will turn into a solid starting PG.
Has to be a 5
Blew away everyone’s expectations and became one of our most prized pieces. Sure there were some issues like high TO’s but he has to get a pass considering it was his rookie season and was thrust into a high usage role.

5
He came in and played at an unbelievable level when CP3 went down.

I Give Him A Five
In terms of what he actually produced, he probably deserves around a 4. In terms of what he brought to the team in a season that was full of turmoil, I give him a 5. Let’s be honest, he and Thornton put up fantastic numbers for the second half of the season (not the full year necessarily) and they were the only reason to watch the team as the season went on. Not only did Collison exceed any and all expectations with his performance on the court, he seemed to embrace coaching and input from his teammates and he showed leadership intangibles that you just don’t find in rookies nowadays.
I wish him all the very, very, very best in Indiana.

I gave him a four
Only reason was that he didn’t actually win us games. If we had made the playoffs he would’ve been a certain 5.

I'll give him a 4 as well...
for practically the same reason. People were smitten with his stats and while they were nice, they didn’t translate to many wins. I’m looking more at the 14-23 in his 37 starts more than I’m looking at his 18&9 stats. He did pretty good for a rookie though.
This bothers me
thinking his stats didn’t translate into wins. Why does he take the brunt of the blame for the lack of making the playoffs? If anything, I firmly believe that both he and Marcus were largely responsible for keeping the team competitive. At the point guard spot, his PER versus his opponents PER was better (heck of a feat for a rookie in this league). More importantly, during crunch time (4th quarter or overtime, less than 5 minutes left,
neither team ahead by more than 5 points) he was similar to guys like Nash and Billups (based on per 48 minutes):
Dimes: 10.8 FGM v. 22.0 FGA (.488 FG%), .537 eFG%, Ast’d 40%, 7.5 FTM, 31.2 points
Nash: 12.4 FGM v. 27.2 FGA (.457 FG%), .531 eFG%, Ast’d 14%, 14.8 FTM, 43.6 points
Billups: 11.0 FGM v. 23.5 FGA (.470 FG%), .568 eFG%, Ast’d 32%, 11.0 FTM, 37.7 points

Exactly
That’s like saying it’s Chris Paul’s fault for not getting the team out of the first round in that spectacular 2009 season that he had. In fact, the team was above or around .500 without Paul until Peja got hurt.
We didn’t even really get to see what Collison could do with a fully healthy team either.

Yea I suppose
But if CP had been healthy I believe we would’ve made the playoffs. Now that’s just me, others may disagree and that’s fine. But Darren Collison didn’t have that leadership and intangibles that Chris had (or has).

Chris Paul...
as the leader of the team takes the brunt of the blame too when not getting to the playoffs. Especially from fans of other teams. He may not have taken the brunt as a rookie but as a rookie the team got 20 more wins than the previous season and he had less talent on his team to work with outside of PJ Brown than Collison did. David West hadn’t come around quite yet. So once again, all those cute stats don’t mean much to me if the team isn’t winning games. That goes for Collison, Chris Paul, Lebron, Kobe, whoever.
This bothers me
“thinking his stats didn’t translate into wins”….
Sorry that bothers you RedHopeful but Collison’s nice stats only garnered 14 wins in his 37 starts. Thats the big picture to me. Wins and losses. I know a lot of Hornets fans liked him as did I, and I wish he was still a Hornet, but the big picture is, while as you say he and Thornton kept the team competitive, competitive didn’t get many wins. You can be competitive and lose by 1 or lose by 15, any way you look at it though , a loss is a loss. Being competitive to me means ‘at least they tried and they were fun to watch’. Collison’s stats are a small sample size. Compare them next year when he’s a regular full time starter. You’re comparing him up there in your post to 2 guys that also started 73 and 81 regular season games compared to his 37 and averaged 33 & 34 minutes per game to Collison’s 28. His turnovers sucked yes but one of the best point guards in the league (Steve Nash) also turns the ball over quite much as well.
Grayson...
yes, it’s more than stats. Leadership and intagibles count as well. Does a player know what to do to pull out a win in a very close game? I saw a Hornets analyst say Collison was able to carry the Hornets but he couldn’t lead them. Perhaps in his 2nd season as a Pacer he can learn to lead.
How is that the big picture?
You’re picking one guy who was playing during this time frame and only kicking him. My stats are merely to point out that you should likely feel the need to spread the wealth since on paper it seems like he did plenty to try to carry the team.

I gave him a 5
Easily exceeded all expectations at the beginning of the year. He has a great career in front of him.
four from me as well
Collison had a terrific fantastic season, but let’s face it, a point guard that turns the ball over has some serious learning left to do.
I can respect your decision
but i have to point out you’re holding him to too high of a standard. Don’t compare this out of nowhere rookie to the best guys in the NBA. Rather, look at it from an expectations view. IMO he shattered them…
