New Orleans Was Looking At Shannon Brown?
Shannon Brown returned to the Lakers today (even though Sasha Vujacic is yet to be dumped on a hapless victim. /knocks on wood). Via ESPN, though, comes this snippet:
Brown is likely the last piece of the Lakers' offseason puzzle. Though the negotiations took longer than expected, he and the team had expressed a desire to work a deal. Brown strongly considered the New York Knicks and New Orleans Hornets.
So apparently the team has been in the market for some of the bigger name free agents remaining, though nothing's officially happened since the Luther Fiasco. I remarked last month that Shannon Brown could be a potential fit as an athletic wing. But the fact remains: Los Angeles is a remarkable fit for him- he gets a ton of shots created for him offensively, has very good cover defensively, and he still isn't that good or that efficient. Seeing him team up with Chris Paul would likely have been awesome, but I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

Depending On The Cost
I think Shannon Brown would have been great in the backcourt with Darren Collison for the second unit. I know that early in the summer he was asking around 4 years and 20 million (or somewhere in that ballpark) and he’s not worth that kind of cost, but if he would have came around 2 years/8 million to the Hornets or something like that, I would have loved the deal.
No offense to all of you, but he’s certainly a better option than Rashad McCants.

However
You’re right that it’s not the end of the world that they didn’t get him. They would have been better, but it wouldn’t have put them over the top to championship level good.

brown's thumb on his shooting hand was sprained the latter half of the season.
before the all-star break, he shot a respectable 45% from the field and 33% from long range. i agree that the triangle helps compensate for some of his flaws, but he isn’t bad at all. all things considered, he’s a decent player with a lot of upside.
as a laker fan, i’m pleased the hornets were interested in Brown, because Dell Demps is supposed to have a good eye for talent. it’s encouraging.

45% and 33%?
Pretty iffy for the system in whcih he was playing in.
A shooting guard that shoots 33% from 3-land is nothing to write home about. He would have been useless in the spot up shooter role that Butler or Morris Peterson played.
Brown is a 42% career shooter from the field, which raises some yellow flags. The only thing intriguing about him is that he must have learned something about defense, having to go up against Kobe in practice, and that could have been helpful since defense was our ahcilles heel last season.
Still, net net, it’s no big loss not to sign him.
No problem
I’ve never been that crazy about Shannon. He’s a surprisingly low skilled player for the position that he plays, relying on his athleticism more than anything.
In any case, those kind of athletic wing players, are a dime a dozen. We could sign somebody like Aubrey Colemn for 10%-20% of Brown’s salary and be almost as good.
Shannon Brown is a guy with no natural position in the NBA
he’ll be alright shooting a few jumpers and running the triangle as a point, but I really don’t think he was a catch for any team this offseason.
So far I have not found the science
