Sunday Discussion: Remaining FA's
It's been more than a month since we drew up our first list of potential FA's. Since then, literally every guy- from Ronnie Brewer to Keith Bogans- has been signed.
New Orleans still only has 12 players under contract, and as Queenbee pointed out yesterday, only three guards. We've discussed the merits of a guy like Rashad McCants (pretty divisive fellow) before, but not many other options. So, today's topic: who do you want, and what kind of contract would be reasonable?
Peachtree Hoops has a great list of the remaining guys here. Some of my favorites:
- Lou Amundson, PF
- Josh Boone, PF
- Rodney Carney, SF
- Luther Head, SG (Joke. Or is it???)
So who do you not want the least?

Tmac?
What does he want? The Vet minimum? I know he’s injured like all the time. But could be worth the minimum.
It would be funny if we tried to go after Head again.

Falcons are my soul,
I watch them through all the strife,
Until they get that Superbowl.
I actually like Josh Boone. He could sub in for Okafor and West respectively. He is still young, has decent rebounding and block numbers, good size and shouldnt be too expensive.
The longer Mac waits for a contract the more I am intrigued. He should get cheaper by the day. He can play the 2 and the 3 and should get enough minutes here to calm his ego. He is still a good player and actually the best available free agent guard out there.
Nevertheless, I am still hoping for Fernandez. He would fit perfectly and fullfill every criteria: He is young, but also experienced. He can shoot the three and drive to the hoop and he can play the 2 and the 3. I still have my fingers cossed.
How about
Allen Iverson, he DOES have a bigger ego than T-Mac, but he can still score the ball and is less injury-prone, which we dont need.

New Rumor
It’s my understanding that the Hornets have been the subject of an LRMR ploy., and as a result will not be signing any free agents or making any trades.
Apparently in the meeting with Chris, the new brass were convinced by Chris that they needed to take their talents to South Beach. My inside sources intimately close to the situation say the Hornets will demand a trade at the next owners meeting and have list of destinations they are going to present at that meeting and Miami is at the top of the list (Charlotte was at the top when I started writing, but things change).
Their exit strategy is already in place and has begun in earnest. They are going to make sure they are bad enough to be drummed out of town so they can move. Some players, led by Aaron ‘Wild Thing’ Gray are against this and are going to try to win to stay here so they can get poboys whenever they want. It seems they have some cardboard standup of Chouest with Shinn head that is a motivational tool.
The Heat will simultaneously move here and change their name to the Humidity in an attempt to get equal value from Miami.
Anything you hear contrary to this is just part of the strategy. This is going to happen, unless Chris changes his mind about not changing the mind of the ownership, whoever that is.
This is the keeping-your-NBA-team equivalent of being trapped in a basement with Ron Mexico, Kobe, and Roethlisberger with Brett Farve sending Pesci-knows-what to your phone and/or blackberry: The only thing you can do is relax, bite down, and see how long it takes for the follow-up to Chinese Democracy to come out.
Stay cool...
The guys available now will be available later if we identify a need. I’d invite Ager, Hines, Diogu, T-Mac, Sean Marks, and a couple of tall centers to camp, but keep the actual guaranteed roster small and flexible. I see nobody that I want sitting in a suit all year….

Three guards
All three of our guards can play either position. With Q and Ju-Ju we have tall quick guys that can come in to defend bigger guards if we are getting torched. Unless one of our 3 is injured, I say we stand pat on guards.

And that would mean...
all 3 of our guards would be considered undersized. I think we need at least 1 more guard.
I think I read on Hines' twitter...
that he may be headed to Germany or somewhere. I think.
Where is Earl Barron?
He wasn’t all that bad as a 2nd or 3rd string center.
good point
forgot about him making an actual impact in NY towards the end of the year.

Also...
from what I’m hearing, the Pistons are in talks with McGrady. Don’t think they’ve offered him anything yet but supposedly they are in talks.
Louis Amundson would be cool
Then I can continue tricking people who don’t watch basketball that he’s the first woman player in the NBA. It worked on a couple of my idiot friends last year.
I sometimes wonder...
what other Hornets not named Chris Paul do in their offseasons. I read Emeka participated in a charity game in support of Coach Jim Calhoun along with other UCONN alums such as Ray Allen, Caron Butler, and Ben Gordon.
Has anyone heard anything at all about what’s going on with the sale of the club to Gary Chouest? Just curious.
Speaking of Emeka....
….in the gym. First of all , my gym that I play in 4 days a week is down the street from UT’s campus. So we get some players from UT (football and basketball) and some local small college players as well as a lot of trash , but this guy came in with a fine ass girl all last week and when I asked him to bring her in there more often because I tend to focus better with an audience. He says it’s his sister and she was visiting from L.A. and I ask if she is dating anyone and he says Emeka Okafor
Oh really?...
UT? As in University of Texas? I remember my brother said he went to this gym in Houston one Sunday (I know UT isn’t in Houston) and he said there were a couple of guys playing, some were NBA players, Emeka was one of them. This was like 3 years or so ago so Emeka wasn’t a Hornet at the tim. Some other NBA and former NBA players were there too just taking in the games that were going on in that gym. He said it was cool. So I guess Emeka hangs out around his hometown of Houston during the offseason.
yeah...UT in Austin
Emeka went to Bellaire high school in Houston(so did my mother). Years ago when I lived in Houston , the action was at Fonde recreation center. You had better be able to play or you would get embarassed. Hakeem , Moses Malone and other former pros (Sam Cassell) used to play there from time to time.
Lots of Texans
I think Mr. Wayne Keller is from San Antonio, and I’m originally from San Angelo. But that’s in the middle of nowhere, so we don’t get very many NBA guys playing pickup around there, haha.
I was born in Houston....
….and partied there after I flunked out of USL for a few years ,but I was raised in Louisiana and even though I live in central Texas now my heart is in the big easy….I will live there again at some point. San Antonio was the home of former Hornet Devin Brown I believe , and technically they can claim Shaq can’t they?
Am A San Antonio Resident
Currently. I lived in a town in Louisiana called Ponchatoula until November of 2002 and have lived in San Antonio ever since. Yeah I attend school here in San Antonio at UTSA and that’s where Devin Brown went to college. That’s why I always stick up for Brown. Because nobody else will!

LMAO
The dude hustles….That is the nicest thing I can say my man. I lived in S.A. for a year when I first moved back to TX(2001). I will probably roll down there to catch our games against the Spurs and to visit my old boss(who sells wine to coach Popp BTW). Maybe we’ll run into each other.

I wouldn't hate
adding Amundson or Kyle Hines (if he hasn’t signed in Europe). We could use some (more) undersized hustle in the front court rotation…
Outside of that I’m pretty much for standing pat. Williams and Demps still seem to be in the process of putting together a staff. Probably they should do that, evaluate the current talent then start making the smartest moves possible. I don’t think it will take much to make this team competitive, provided everyone is healthy.
Maybe it’s this new look Saints under Payton’s program, but I have confidence (read: hope) that the Hornets will be getting a new look that could mirror the Saints’. I figure let Williams mentor Paul and let the best player in the NFL (Brees) be an example to the best player in the NBA (sorry twice LBJ), of how to lead a winning team.
Bad contracts and bad players are for suckers (sorry Atlanta).
