Chris Paul Never Asked Out
Good morning sweet world. It's been months since I last wrote a post that wasn't an attempt to boil a player's entire season down to a single, arbitrary number, but here we are.
Via The Sporting News, via Monty Williams' mouth:
"You can say [the rumor mill] has settled down now, but it was settled before that. For me, it was never an issue. Chris never said anything about a trade. He never asked for a trade."
That's.. interesting. Assuming Monty Williams was in attendance at the infamous "Chris Paul meets with the Front Office! Ahhh!" tete-a-tete, it's all the more intriguing. It pretty much undermines all the reasons the media reported for the meeting's very existence. So, yeah.
This also means that At the Hive's tenuous/vaporous/twiggy insider sources are now batting 1 for 1. Mmm, twiggy.

I Remember That
Him stating that Paul never asked for a trade. But any more clarification and conviction we can get on this topic is deserved. People are still talking about the Hornets with the required “what will they do for Chris Paul” story. I still say that if Paul gives Monty and Dell Demps two years to build a team and he’s not convinced with them by the time his contract goes up, I’ll be upset when he leaves but I won’t be bitter.

Paul doesn't have to demand a trade himself for the message to be conveyed
Far too many reliable NBA reporters said Paul’s agents pushed for a trade for that much not to be true. If Paul says it himself, he can be fined; but if his agents do it—or, more insidiously, if he asks his agents to do it—the league has no recourse.
Agreed
But that meeting was specifically supposed to be Paul (and agent), directly demanding a trade to Demps and Williams. Kind of making “official” the underlying push by his agents/associates for a trade.
ok
Ok, so he never “officially” asked to be traded. Just unofficially, through his representatives, leaks to media, etc. Same thing, maybe worse, in my opinion.
By the way, do you recall that after that meeting which was apparently meant to clear the air, CP’s agent lambasted the Hornets, being quoted to the effect that the Hornets have done absolutely nothing to improve the team recently.
It must have been one hell of a meeting where the representative of one of the meeting’s parties labasts the other side after it.
I’ll be happy to dig up the exact quote. It sure didn’t sound like the kind of thing one says if the water is really under the bridge. I’ll be keeping a sceptical eye on CP this season.
Why not just accept it for what it was?
Paul was likely convinced by Rose or whomever the best thing to do for HIM was to make some waves in the still water. One, it pushed his name and thus his brand to the forefront for a few weeks. Two, it forced his home team to move more urgently in putting together a better team. Three, he was able to see what other teams would make a play for him and the potential situations he could find himself in the not to distant future.

I Just Don't Understand
How Monty Williams saying that Chris Paul never asked out doesn’t end the conversation or put to ease people’s speculations about Paul leaving, but some goof at CBS saying that a source close to the second cousin of Chris Paul’s 8th grade teacher, who had dinner at Applebee’s with a distant relative of Leon Rose can say that Chris Paul wants to be traded and people can say “yeah well Paul can’t say anything or he’ll get fined. He really wants out.”
Seems to me that people, both ways, just hear what they want to hear.

Whether he or anyone speaking for him...
asked for a trade or not, he’s going to be a Hornet in 2010-11 so get your tickets and popcorn. If he didn’t stir the pot I’m almost convinced we’d still have Mo Pete, Posey, Wright, and Bower. And now with all this turnaround, we may even have better athletic trainers. LOL! Imagine that.
To say CP inflicted PR damage on himself this summer....
I sure don’t see a shortage of teams, or shall I say their fans, wanting to make a play for Chris Paul. I guess the damage couldn’t have been all that bad. There are even some that come here that aren’t even Hornets fans but I’ll bet they’d be happy to have him in their favorite teams uniforms heh?
If CP3...
wanted out as bad as some and the media want him out, seems like Leon Rose, Wesley, Lebron, Ken Berger or whomever would just pay the fine for him. Obviously the PR hit wouldn’t be that bad seeing as he’d be doing what most think he should do anyways right? :)
