Sunday Discussion: FIBA World Championships

There's been precious little basketball news recently and even less about the Hornets. But the FIBA World Championships are in full swing in Turkey. Kevin Durant is being widely toasted for his outstanding play, and deservedly so. Tommy Craggs, though, has a fantastic article on Slate that points out that the massive media love-fest for Durant is due to sports pundits comparing Durant favorably to LeBron James.

Since FIBA is the only real basketball actually going on, let's talk about it today. What players have stood out to you? Are you still weirded out by the trapezoidal key? And why does the US sports media love to rag on the American team?

The player I have been watching the most is Rubio. He has pretty much lived up to my expectations, as he is a good distributor but a poor shooter. I am hoping for a Spain-USA matchup, which I think will happen in the final.

On another note, the commentators are just awful. I have been watching on ESPN3 and they are the worst I have ever heard. Getting things wrong, yelling over each other, etc., it has been really bad.

Haha

I’ve only seen one game in its entirety so far. Is Rubio an aggressive shooter.. does he look for his own shot a lot?

by Rohan on Sep 5, 2010 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really, only takes about 6 shots per game.

I've been following the New Zealand team

We finished pool play at 3-2. Started up with losses to Lithuania and Spain, where we were competitive for stretches of the game, but gave up runs of points that had us trying to claw back double digit leads. We gave up a lot more easy points in the paint than we created ourselves.

Then we picked up wins over Lebanon, Canada and France. The France game was particularly impressive – we needed a 12 point win to finish third instead of fourth in the group and managed to do it. The third place finish is somewhat of a mixed blessing though – if we beat Russia tomorrow, our opponent after that will be Team USA.

So if NZ do beat Russia tomorrow, what players should you be keeping an eye out for on the NZ team?

The heart of the offence is former University of Wisconsin star, shooting guard Kirk Penney. He’s the second leading scorer in the tournament at the moment behind Luis Scola, averaging 25.4 points per game. He can hit the three pointer, drive to the basket for layups, and draw fouls (in his 37 point performance against Lithuania he shot 16-20 from the foul line). He doesn’t have the raw speed to beat good defenders one-on-one, but he moves a lot off the ball, and the NZ team set plenty of screens for him to work off.

Like Penney, forward Pero Cameron is a survivor of NZ’s 2002 world championship team (which finished fourth). A legend in NZ basketball, he’s playing only limited minutes in this tournament due to missing all of the NZ basketball season due to injury. He can score both inside and out, but his biggest contribution is probably his passing. He leads NZ with 19 assists in pool play, despite only averaging 16 minutes per game (that translates to 9.4 assists per 40 minutes).

Tom Abercrombie has been a revelation to me this tournament. Despite their nickname, the “Tall Blacks” aren’t actually that tall. But Abercrombie seems to have a nose for rebounds, and the team occasionally use his athleticism for alley-oop plays. He shares the rebounding duties with Mika Vikuna.

New Zealand shoots a lot of three pointers (like many international teams), and while Penney takes the most attempts per game, don’t be surprised to see half the team taking shots from outside the arc. New Zealand doesn’t have a lot of players who can create their own offence by themselves, but they work pretty hard to create shots for each other.

Weaknesses? An offence that leans heavily on the three pointer is always vulnerable to a bad shooting night, and New Zealand can’t always create easy buckets close to the basket to compensate. Plus their offence is basically “Kirk Penney” and “everyone else”. On defence, both Spain and Lithuania created a lot of easy buckets in the low post.

Oh and if you're wondering where Sean Marks is...

He retired from international basketball in 2006, and couldn’t be lure back for last charge at international glory.

Haha whoa

Pretty detailed breakdown. As far as I can tell, fouling has been an issue for Team USA, so they’ll have to watch out for Penney.

Where do these guys- Penney, Cameron, Abercrombie, etc- play ball professionally?

Australia's NBL for the most part

New Zealand have a team in the Australian National Basketball League, so a lot of the team have played there. Four of the team are semi-professionals, playing in NZ’s own domestic basketball league. A lot of the veteran players (Penney, Cameron, Phil Jones) have spent time playing in Europe at one time or another.

Penney had two one-week contracts in the NBA for Miami and the Clippers, and played a season in the D-League. He also played a few games for the Sioux Skyforce at the end of the most recent D-League season, and lit up the scoreboard. I’ve thought he might make a low-risk, potentially high reward acquisition for the Hornets, but that ’s probably just my desire for the Hornets to maintain their Kiwi quota talking. :)

Agreed

on the media bashing aspect. People- smart analysts, good journalists, just seem to love it. Can you imagine if the US Baseball team, for example, kept winning games by 1 run? People would be ecstatic. And baseball’s far less established internationally than basketball. When you toss together teams in a short time span, regardless of talent, you’ll get a good game from teams that have been together for 5-10 years. The way the sport works…

Well that sucks

Australia got killed by Slovinia. Can’t say I didn’t expect it though, I mean I watched it, we really need Bogut and Jawai in our lineup…(By the way they didn’t play)

I saw that game

Australia didn’t seem to be able to get anything going on offense, and then Slovenia started burying them with threes. I have this fear that New Zealand’s offense could similarly implode at any time – I just hope it isn’t against Russia.

I agree

NZs offense is very deliberate and has not really got a bail out option. However when the team is full of good scorers someone probably would step up if the offense does implode. Also a few alley oops by Tom Abercrombie could kickstart NZ and give them a bit of momentum. However we do need to sort out our point guards, Mike Fitchett is OK and Jeremy Kench is just flat out bad. Lindsey Tait is playing well but one or both of the backups need to step up.

Well, after talking up the New Zealand team...

…they were beaten pretty convincingly by Russia today. Most telling stat? Russia outrebounded New Zealanad 41 to 25, which tells you a lot about how the bigger, taller Russian forwards pretty much had their way in the paint. The Russian defence was as tenacious as advertised, completely stifling New Zealand’s attack.

Kirk Penney had a game he’d be dissapointed with. His shooting radar was off, and he spent a lot of time on the bench due to foul trouble. His most succesful offensive play was drawing a foul – he shot 10 of 12 from the line.

Saw a little bit of Team USA running rampant over Angola. The poor Africans were simply overwhelmed. I think Russia will prove more robust on defence, but I think they’ll find it harder to score against the Americans that against the Kiwis.

The World Champs

Only really gets down to the final four. But when you think about it, a lot of teams were without big names, so it’d be interesting to find out what would happen if every country had their NBA players playing for them…

Few players have been beasting

Scola – dude has been a machine
Yi – nice stats but I feel they once again won’t translate well in the NBA
Kleiza – might be a nice surprise contributor for TOR this year

Disappointing:

Rudy Fernandez – all his bickering in POR and he really hasn’t done anything special for Spain like years past.

Hoping to catch a bit of today’s ARG – BRA matchup.

Me too... should be a good one

Was hoping NZ would advance so I could actually know some of the players the USA would face, thanks to Icebird. But alas…

That was an outstanding game to watch, unfortanetly Brazil lost by just 4 points, i dont know if you guys are following the brazil games but what i saw from marcelo huertas makes me think that he can play as a quality backup of Chris Paul .Any thoughts?
