Luther Head Again
A relatively sensational headline from Ziller at Fanhouse yesterday: Report: Hornets Lied About Luther Head's Ankle. I slap the "sensational" tag on it due to the lack of any new information on the situation. The story that has been circulating on Twitter (and that MrWayneKeller FanShotted here) is just a reference to the original A-Woj story/destruction of the front office.
A quick refresher on the timeline; in bold, the person in charge of front office decisions at the time (from my critique of the team's decision from July 15th).
Sat., July 10th: Hornets, Head agree deal [Jeff Bower]
Tue., July 13th: Jeff Bower leaves team [Hugh Weber]
Wed., July 14th: Hornets withdraw offer [Hugh Weber]
Wed., July 14th: Head's agent/Woj slam Hornets [Hugh Weber]
Tue., July 20th: Hornets hire Dell Demps [Dell Demps]
Let's start with this: we still don't know if Head did or did not fail a physical. We have the word of the Hornets against the word of Mark Bartelstein. Yes, A-Woj is a respected reporter that has broken a staggeringly large percentage of NBA stories in the past two years. But let's remember that A-Woj's original report was simply the result of a phone conversation he had with Bartelstein. Sure, other sources "have told" Woj that the failed physical affected Head's chances. But as far as the physical itself? It was Bartelstein's word, as held up by Woj for all to see.
In Woj's latest Y! story, one can find an updated sourcing: "Several sources insisted that there was nothing wrong with the ankle." But again, I'm not convinced. Were these sources all present during the physical? Are these sources that are close to Head, but that weren't present at the physical and don't know specifically what the Hornets contended? Are these Hornet sources that leaked the information out? Keeping in mind the confidentiality associated with medicals, it's unlikely that very many people outside of Weber/Williams/medical staff were on hand for the physical.
Second, the decision to withdraw the offer was Weber's. Woj explicitly calls out Weber in his scathing TweetackTM. As dubious as the situation still feels to me, the current front office- Demps, Williams, etc.- is almost entirely unattached.
And finally, I don't buy the "failed physical doomed Head's future chances" argument nearly as much as I did two months ago. Let's say a team wants a bench shooter. They draw up a list of options. They see Head as the best fit. At that point, it seems absolutely ridiculous to dismiss him from consideration because of a heavily contested failed physical, administered by a so-called sleazy team. Likewise, if a team is going to bring him to camp but is afraid of guaranteeing a contract due to the Hornet physical.... why not give him a physical themselves? Do NBA physicals cost in the thousands? Do teams not want to pay for plane tickets?
The conclusion is the same as it was two months ago. If the Hornets lied, that's messed up. If the Hornets didn't lie, then... yeah. For now, all we can definitively say is this isn't nearly as black and white as people are making it out to be.

It's tough to grasp
What reality is here. It’s a case of he said she said, and to be honust I’d rather take an official word, rather than the word of “sources” who don’t come out and name themselves.
I find it particularly unsettling that off-the-record sources are being quoted to break stories. Off-the-record means the source doesn’t want to be disclosed for one of two reasons;
1. The backlash they face if named
2. Or the fact they just want to stir the pot and create controversy just for the sake.
The second thing is the reason that many sources are going “off-the-record” these days. It used to be for the first one, but the second one is what it’s been the past two years, and it sickens me that so-called journalists get away with it as “newsworthy” information, absolutely sickening.

pretty fishy
It was still a pretty fishy move on the Hornets part. I mean outright failure of physical where a team rejects the player completely is pretty rare. If there were concerns, couldn’t the Hornets have offered a non-guaranteed deal like the Kings did, instead of renegging on the deal entirely? That would have offered both parties a safe out of the situation—and if Head had felt that he was worth more, he could have just turned the deal down, and all parties would have saved face.
Frankly, even if there were legit concerns after the physical, the Hornets should have at least cosnidered that kind of alternative, just to avoid the potential damage that the front office did to its rep in the eyes of other Mark, other agents and other players, especially fringe/role players.
Despite his injuries, Head is a known commodity, having been an important role player on playoff teams before. He’s shot 1000 three pointers and made 39% of them, which has been his niche in the NBA. That’s pretty much the role that the Hornets could have used him in—and bringing the ball up as a point guard in the pinch.
He has a ton moer experience than the dude we signed as back-up point, Mustafa Shakur, or whatever his name is.
Not the wisest move on the part of Hugh.
I've also wondered....
“why not give him a physical themselves? Do NBA physicals cost in the thousands? Do teams not want to pay for plane tickets?”
This is what I’ve wondered as well. I can’t believe other teams wouldn’t conduct their own physicals. Head wouldn’t have been a make or break for the Hornets. I wasn’t excited about his signing.
Experience, experience. Shaq has more experience than Emeka or Chandler but that doesn’t mean he’s a better fit for the Hornets.
well
Head wouldn’t have been a make or break player for the Hornets, but the position they were trying to fill wasn’t a make or break position, it was a guard who could play meaningful minutes off the bench, at either guard position, shoot the long bomb on kickouts, and who would come pretty cheap. That was Head’s exact billing as an FA.
It’s not like Mustafa dude is going to be a make or break player for the Hornets either. I found it interesting that at the time of the announcement of the signing of Head was made, who was going to be signed for the veterna’s minimum, it was roundly jeered by fans on this board. While when Mustafa dude’s signing was announced, it was generally met with cautious applause… Mustafa has it going for him that he doesn’t have “8 year NBA vet ankles”, but beyond that… some positive sounding scouting reports.
It will be an embarrassment for Hugh if Head players more than 60 games and plays efficiently for the next couple of seasons.
Point of view
If any 8-year player in the league has perfect ankles or knees, I ‘d be shocked. The physical is just like the inspection when buying a used house. It is a way for a team with buyer’s remorse to legally back out of a deal, with no recourse for the player. Rules of the game….
I think it would be very hard to prove that Luther’s ankle is a perfect specimen with zero risk of a Diogu-like season-ending injury. The Hornets got burned big-time last year, and have reason to be conservative based on that.
Let’s move on. Nothing to see here…..
Can you guys believe...
it’s just about 19 days until training camp??!! I’m ready. Saints kickoff this Thursday and it won’t be long until I can stop watching old Hornets games and get to some new stuff. Hahaha!
+1
I’m excited about this time of year as well. :)

Could be true...
may not be the big deal to eliminate the contract offer, but one to make the contract unguarenteed, or at least prove he is ready at the NBA level of conditioning. The Kings know this, and want to test Head out with other, non guarenteed contracts.

Maybe that's why...
Terry Kofler wasn’t retained this season. Was he the one giving physicals for the Hornets? LOL!
In any event, this is so last month.
