Game 42: Hornets vs. Raptors
Subplots:
- Second half of the season starts.... now.
- Jerryd Bayless and Peja Stojakovic return, though Peja is expected to be unavailable. He's only played two games as a Raptor, both in November.
- Toronto ranks among the NBA's worst defensive teams. They're actually decent at forcing turnovers, but their inability to prevent opponents from shooting high percentages (especially from three) negates that and more.
- Go Hornets.

Jerryd Bayless
Hope he doesn’t go off on the Hornets today, honestly. He’s one of those streaky players who is more than capable of it. It’s still an early start for the Hornets, which they’ve struggled with this season, but it’s at home. I wonder how rested they feel. They only had one day off yesterday following that back to back. Today could be tough because of the pace that the Raptors play at (I.E.: the games with the Knicks and Warriors). We’ll just have to wait and see how the team performs.

Bayless didn't play Saturday
and might not play today, either.

Yeah
Hornets are down by 12 right now and they just look really sluggish. They look a tad slow, the Raptors are hustling for rebounds, they just want it more than New Orleans right now. Thank God for Okafor and David West or else this game would be largely no contest.

He's been set up with good shots
So its not like he’s shot jacking, he’s just missing good looks. Hornets really need another good shooter or two on this team.
yeah. he didnt look right when being out there.
great defensive effort on DeRozan.

I actually don't hink he's all that great yet...
He can still improve on a lot of things, but he could become very good at some point.
Strong Win
Let me just start off by saying that I was very discouraged by the amount of people at the arena today. There’s no more football, the weather wasn’t awful, a lot of people were out of school and such today…. the attendance was just poor. No more excuse; the majority of people in New Orleans could care less whether this team stays or goes.
Onto the game itself, I have to say that the Hornets play the least entertaining brand of basketball in the entire league, but they have a 26-16 record to show for it. They’ve been getting by with slowing the game down heavily and then making big shots when they need it. Chris Paul had a very rough game offensively, but West, Jack and Okafor all played well enough for the team to win.
I like Marcus’ aggressiveness today. He got to the basket a lot (but couldn’t finish) and had two terrific passes that resulted in one bouncing off of Jason Smith’s chest and the other with David West missing a wide open dunk. But he was aggressive and active and I thought he played well, although if you miss the game and just look at numbers then you’ll wonder why he gets any playing time.
Okafor was terrific all game and kept the team in it when the Raptors were playing great. Everyone else eventually met him in the late 3rd/early 4th quarters. I don’t know how much longer the team can keep playing from behind but it’s working right now. The Memphis game should be interesting on Wednesday.

Not stellar attendance, but poor?
There were 15k+ in an 18.0k max arena. Sure, we’d love all sell outs, but don’t know that it was “poor.”
Well
This is one of those cases where I said attendance at the Orlando game was great but I read it was 13K and then I saw the attendance for this game was poor but I read it was 15k. I’m just going off the eye test and that crowd really was thin for that game.

Hornets escape with win
Some sluggish play, but it was kind of expected. Road back to backs prior to that which included a 6am plane ride. Not much wonder they started off sluggish.
But they played well when it counted. Another great game for Okafor. Fast emerging as our 3rd scorer, playing like an All-Star lately. 12 frikkin offenisve rebounds!!!
Jack had the hot hand off the bench again. He showed a typical Jack game—good shotmaking and turnover prone play.
CP hasn’t been playing great lately. Wonder whether his injury still bothering him. 1 for 8, but 11 Asts with 0 TOs.
Mixed play from our backup SGs. MT played aggressive on offense but he didn’t have a lot to show for it. Green had a few good defenisve plays, but finished 3 for 10.
Anderson had a block
Some really sluggish play, highlighted by Sundiata Gaines getting an offensive rebound while sandwitched between 2 Hornets in first half. Overall, I was a bit shocked to read that we had 19 offensive rebs and 49 total—we seemed to make up the rebounidng difference in one particular trip down the court, where we got 4 or 5 in a row.
Odd playcalling by refs.
Go Hornets!
