Hornets 100, Hawks 59: Demolition in Atlanta
So, that was pretty sweet.
It's rare and intensely satisfying to see a team play such a complete game. New Orleans shot the ball well, got to the line often, rebounded their own misses, took decent care of the ball, stayed away from fouling, and boarded Atlanta's misses. And of course, there was the whole "allowing 59 points" aspect of the thing.
The Hornet defense was primarily in a man configuration for this game. Monty Williams popped the zone in and out during some stretches, but for the most part, he stayed with individual assignments. While Atlanta's total lack of a creative scorer outside of Jamal Crawford (Joe Johnson routinely settled for horrible jump shots) played a huge role, the Hornet defense was simply stifling. In many ways, this game epitomized what Monty Williams has brought to the team in 2010-2011.
On to some notes:
- The Hornets played extremely efficient offense, scoring 100 points on just 86 possessions. Much credit should go to the team's three point shooting (8 for 15), especially Marco Belinelli's barrage to open the second half.
- Chris Paul denied passing lanes very effectively in the first half. That's something he does on a nightly basis, but his three steals tonight were especially impressive.
- It was great to see David West get into it against Atlanta defenders (specifically Jarron Collins). Was Collins' ejection justified? I think it was right on the edge. Collins clearly wasn't going for the ball, and I strongly suspect that had he pulled that on a weaker player than David West, it could have been an extremely dangerous play.
- Emeka Okafor only played 23 minutes, but his 12 defensive boards played a large role in the team's success on the defensive glass. Overall, New Orleans rebounded 85% of Atlanta misses (of which there were a ton)
- Quincy Pondexter started for Trevor Ariza and looked extremely poised as the game began. He scored inside, made a three, set up Okafor for two dunks (one of which he missed), and was generally aggressive. His defense, while not up to Ariza's standards, was solid as well.
- Sure, you can categorize the entire second half as "garbage time," but D.J. Mbenga played a pretty decent game in Aaron Gray's stead. He finished with 4 offensive rebounds and a thunderous throw down off a Marcus Thornton feed in the fourth quarter.
- Mike Bibby barely missed out on an 18 trillion (!), by virtue of a single foul and assist.
- The Atlanta crowd was terrible. Example 1: you could easily hear Chris Paul and Monty Williams or David West and Emeka Okafor conversing on the floor, throughout the game. Example 2: when Chris Paul went to the line late in the second quarter, the crowd broke out a "Marvin's better!" chant. As John Hollinger tweeted re: the chant, "Better at what? Yahtzee?"
- While neither Jarrett Jack nor Willie Green scored efficiently, Marcus Thornton finished with 11 points on 7 shots. Additionally, he finished with 7 rebounds. Thornton has been huge on the defensive glass all season and that needs to be a major factor in the playing time debate.
- Josh Smith has to be one of the most easily baited players in the league. Leave him at 20 feet, and he becomes absolutely convinced that he can drill it from there. Offer an off-ball player a sliver of space, and Smith is certain he can thread the needle on a ridiculous pass. Smith finished with 5 turnovers and while 7 misses in 12 shots isn't awful, many of those misses were from inefficient areas of the floor.
- And finally... forget the analysis for a second... we just beat a playoff team 100-59!

Yeah
That was pretty terrific. Even nicer to hear Monty single out Thornton on NBATV after the game to mention how great he’s played as of late. As far as the game is concerned, there’s nothing better. This was terrific. They played great, starters got some rest, second night of a back to back at home against a top team tomorrow and let’s hope the team continues that efficient play then.
"You play to win the game."
We all know Atlanta is a top flight team.
Just not tonight. Whether the Hornets D stifled them, they had an off night, or a combination of the two: I’ll take it.
Hornets DESTROY Hawks in ATLANTA
Great game all around. Atlanta best overall player was out as was Marvin Williams who has been a part time starter. But still, Atlanta has won 8 of 10 and has firmly established itself as a tough midtier playoff team the past few seasons and they’ve been tough in Atlanta. So great win.
Good play from pretty much every player. Great defense (29% shooting by Atlanta). Balanced offense from starters and bench. Domination on the boards. Hornets made more than half of their 3-pointers and 20-22 FTs.
Monty has now reached his goal of playing at least 0.500 on the road in addition to being good at home.
Bellinelli bounced back to hit 5-8 including two some parking lot 3s. Mbenga gave some quality minutes. I liked his fastbreak dunk and his powerful rejection (although it was a foul by another player). I’m glad to see him play for a change instead of gathering rust, because we may need him for the playoffs. Anderson 3-3 on his jumpers. He played well, and he’s ok to have as a 11th or 12th man. Thornton has now had 2 good shooting games in a row and he gave good rebounding as well. Better play from Marcus has resulted in more looks and playing time.
Can’t wait for tomorrow’s game ^^
Great game, great article
Woodson or no Woodson, the Hawks are one of the most manic teams in the league

Loving the D.J. Mbenga shout-out
Swatting & dunking def. isn’t in Gray’s repetoire, it was great to see D.J. have a little fun out there (esp. that seismic dunk).

Agreed
The one thing I disliked was his screens, which were horrible. But other than that, I still like him out there for spot minutes. In addition to that seismic dunk, he also had that seismic block which didn’t count due to the silly Willie Green foul
Fun Hypo.
Of course we wouldn’t have won as handily if Horford had been in the game, but does anyone think we still would’ve won by a comfortable margin? Sorry it’s a sloppily delivered hypothetical, but you get the gist

Yeah, I think we win comfortably even with him in
He definitely would have provided them with a stronger post option, but our defense was just on point
2nd Seed Here we Come!
I think this team has a fair shot of making the 2nd seed in the West. Not saying it’s a good shot, but they definitely have a shot. That’s what I want the Hornets to aim for.
This is how i see it:
Dallas is in a tailspin and Butler’s out all season. They are still a good and will snap out of it sooner or later and they are a deep team with Marion replacing Butler and they have depth at center like they’ve never had before, but they’ve struggled lately. I think we can pass them.
Utah is deep and well coached, but although he’s played fairly well, big Al is not quite as good as Boozer. We can pass them—in fact with this win, we have passed them for the 5th seed.
Portland has a shot at making the playoffs, but they won’t threaten us. With Oden out and now Roy having surgery on BOTH knees, they’ll limp into the playoffs at best. I actually think that the Clippers have an outside shot of catching them for the 8th seed. anyway, they’re in the rearview mirror.
OKC. They have Durant, but they’re not an elite defenisve team. I think that’s our edge against them.
Denver – they could in fact be a little scary if they keep the team intact. They’ve added some good talent to the core that made the conference finals a couple of years ago. Still, I think at some point, even if the Melo-drama ends without any trades, the perpetual chaos will catch up to them at some point.
That leaves the Lakers and Spurs. We won’t catch the Spurs, unfrotunately that’s a given. But we’re only 3 games behind the Lakers. Not an insurmountable edge. The 3-peat season is said to be the hardest for championship team. Lakers have shown flashes of that complacency and, though they’ve rallied recently, we still have a half a season to go.
We have a favorable home/road schedule in the 2nd half and and less playoff opponents than non-playoff ones left to face. After some struggles, I think we are jelling as a team.
It won’t be easy, but I think 2nd seed is what we have to aim for.
Go Hornets!
Agreed on all counts
I’d stopped looking at the standings for a while after our cold stretch, so I was surprised to see how closely packed everyone is.
The one thing is that since the division winners earn the top 3 seeds, we’d need to pass San Antonio to get into the top 3. Unless we win the division, highest we could finish is 4th. Unless you meant it in terms of overall record, which I think still determines home court (not sure)
good point
I’m not certain but I BELIEVE that the division determines the initial seeding but the team with the better record will get home court when it faces a division leader with worse record.
So yeah, that means 3rd seed is technically probably out of reach.
Still, general point stands—let’s aim for 2nd best record in West, haha !
cheers
Ha, I'll look it up some time when I'm not feeling so lazy
The depressing thing is… check out the Pacific division. 2nd place is Phoenix, who is 10 games behind L.A.
The Lakers could essentially do whatever they want for the rest of the season and are guaranteed a top 3 seed basically
yes
We’re in the toughest division and it’s rough. And even though we’ve climbed the divsiion standings, the teams below us are all playoff threats. I don’t even consider Houston to be totally out of it, let alone Memphis. They’re good tough teams really.
By the way, in my previous post, of course I meant “So yeah, that means 2ND seed is technically probably out of reach…. so let’s aim for 2nd best record”
2nd Seed
So, y’all may have already found this explanation, but I noticed the confusion on the first four seeds in the playoffs and decided to stick my nose into the discussion.
The first four seeds are the teams in each conference with the best records (the three division winners, plus the team with the best record outside of those three). Those teams are seeded according to record, with no weight being given to whether or not the team won its division. So, without winning the SW, but with a better record than the winners of the NW and Pac, the Hornets could actually get the 2nd seed.
The tricky part is when there are three teams in one division (let’s say, hypothetically: SAS, NOH, DAL) that all finish with a better record than the winner of another division. In that scenario, the third team gets bumped to the 5 seed (with the NW/Pac division winners filling out the top four).
Remember in 07-08, the top five seeds were (in order): LAL, NOH, SAS, UTH, HOU… even though Houston was actually one game better than Utah.
So, yes, the Hornets do play in the toughest division.
Hope that was helpful rather than confusing. Also, last night was a treat. More of that, please. Time for me to go downtown for tonight’s matchup. Geaux Hornets.

Hmm
Out of curiosity, I just looked up the 07-08 standings. And, actually, Phoenix AND Houston both had better records than Utah. But the seeding was…
4. UTAH
5. HOUSTON
6. PHOENIX
God, the playoffs were fun that year.

One more prediction ^^
I’ll go out on a limb and say we can actually beat our early season 11 game winning streak. Ha ha!
If we can beat SA tomorrow
We get OKC (overrated in my opinion and we’re home) on Monday, then Golden State (revenge game, plus they suck), Sacramento (sucks), Phoenix (worst defense in the NBA), before heading into our next Lakers matchup
yeah
Yeah, agreed that OKC is a bit overated at this time. I have confidence that Ariza could work his defensive magic in a 7 game series against Durant.
So yes, SA game is definitely the road block. After that, there’s mostly cream puffs. haha!
I was scared of Dallas like a month ago
But they’ve seemingly fallen apart with the loss of Butler and Dirk’s injury
Dirk
does NOT look like the same player – he’s really been favoring the leg. Probably came back too early due to team struggling. W/o a doubt I expect Cuban to make a move, but I’m guessing they’ll want to see what Beaubois has to offer first.
Wow
you make a tough schedule sound easy lol.
One underrated aspect of the game that I didn't mention in the recap
Is the 10-0 run we had to start the 3rd. I think the game could still have gone either way at that point if Atlanta had come out of the locker room with intensity. But we ended up sealing the game in those first couple minutes instead.
I'm going to savour this win...
…simply because we know from experience that this Hornets can return to earth at any time. The Western conference standings are amazingly packed at the moment. The Spurs have a deep roster, and they seem to playing focused. The Lakers ought to be challenging them for best record in the West, but I think the Lakers are their own worst enemy, and just have trouble keeping their concentration for regular season games. Dallas might be stumbling now, but I expect they’ll get back to winning soon. After that it seems that any of a half dozen teams have as good a chance as the next guy.
I’d like to believe the best for the Hornets, but I have the feeling they’re going to torment us with another slump or two before the regular season is done. They’ve been the personification of streaky this season.

I feel today's matchup against the Spurs
should be good. We’re riding as high as we have all season while they could be missing a big part of their gameplan with Hill and Bonner possibly out again.
This is completely off topic, but........
Does anybody here have Xbox Live and 2K11? I was thinking about an ATH crew. I anyone wants to add me my Gamertag is JH39.

CP3 is coming. Quick, hide your Howards!
Hornets have jumped up to 3rd in the league defensively after last night
Have now allowed just 101.7 points per possessions, behind only Chicago (99.8, Thibs is doin’ it again) and Boston (100.7- it ain’t all about Thibs). And they are now first in opponent points per game at 91.4… a lesser stat but one that’s more likely to be talked about in the mainstream.
