Your Pregame Moment of Zen

Erm, yeah.

The Warrior Outlook

Dreams of a post-season berth have gradually faded in the California Bay Area, and that's something of a shame since Golden State has an eclectic, fun-to-watch group of players. Monta Ellis' frenetic drives are surrounded by the solid interior play of David Lee and the amazingly smooth shot of Stephen Curry (watching him shoot is eerily similar to watching Dell Curry shoot for the Hornets more than a decade ago).

Nothing is decided in the Western Conference, but at 13-21, Golden State is 5 games and 4 spots out of 8th place. Their -4.9 point/game differential is bested by only Sacramento and Minnesota in the West. They're a mediocre offensive team (largely lifted up by strong offensive rebounding and decent shooting) and an extremely poor defensive team that happens to do both those things at a frenetic pace.

Subplots

  • New Orleans has had some exciting games against Golden State in the Chris Paul era, dating back to the early CP-Baron Davis battles.
  • Golden State is the NBA's worst defensive rebounding team, so even if the Hornets miss some shots tonight, they should be looking for second and third opportunities.
  • While the Warriors are awful on defense (2nd worst only to Phoenix), they do force many turnovers. Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry both rank among the league's top thiefs (2.9% and 2.8% steal percentages, respectively; for what it's worth, Chris Paul leads the NBA at 4.6%). Overall, the Warriors rank 3rd in opponent turnover percentage in the conference.
  • David Lee has struggled through some scary injury issues this year, and as a result, hasn't played the way we're accustomed to. Through 25 games, he's posting career low rates in defensive rebounding, total rebounding, effective field goal and true shooting percentages.
Check out Golden State of Mind for the Warrior perspective.

One last note regarding the December Jersey Contest- the contest ended with a 3 way tie between Matt, MW, and VTCP3fan (what are the odds, right?). I'm deciding on some sort of tiebreaker now (maybe another game contest?), so if you've got any good ideas on how to make the three of 'em duel it out, post in the comments.

Go Hornets!

We still need a solid 3rd scorer for this team to be successful IMO…we thought Ariza would be the guy, but we were obviously wrong. Thornton has pretty much lost all his confidence but hopefully he can regain it before the end of the season

A much faster paced game tonight.

82 points at the end of 3? Wow very un-Hornet like.

terrible officiating in this quarter…we may be screwed here

by EaglesFanatic80 on Jan 5, 2011 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

It's made even worse by the fact

that we turn the ball over, can’t score worth a lickin’ and are playing no defense at all leaving open shooters.

I mean when Biedrens has the ball at the top of the key and there’s Dorrell Wright on the wing open for three which one should you guard? Umm…I’ll take Biedrens…

Jeez Chris Paul

You’re really going to give the ball to Willie Green down 2 with 1:30 left?

As awful as WG is, I don’t blame him one iota for that last play.

by Rohan on Jan 5, 2011 9:23 PM CST reply actions

Then Willie fouls Ellis….why would he be on Ellis…he is way too fast

by EaglesFanatic80 on Jan 5, 2011 9:24 PM CST reply actions

Probably expecting a swing pass…why is Willie shooting 3 pointers…how many has he made all year??? I would rather see Ariza throw up a 3 ball then Willie…and that isn’t saying much

Blown Opportunities

This 4th quarter has just been awful. I don’t know why Monty went small all 4th quarter either. They said all day about how they wanted to dictate the pace but that played right into Golden State’s hands.

"You play to win the game."

Terribly coached 4th quarter

by EaglesFanatic80 on Jan 5, 2011 9:33 PM CST up reply actions

For sure

This one is primarily on the defense and on Monty Williams’ rotations.

by Rohan on Jan 5, 2011 9:33 PM CST up reply actions

This Lost Doesn't Kill Me

The only thing that really bothers me about tonight is how the Hornets always get me feeling good about the direction of the team and then they collapse like this. Up by 13 in the second half, up by 10 to start the 4th quarter, knowing you’re about to travel and play at the Lakers on Friday, you need to take advantage and pull this game out. And they didn’t.

I just wish I could get a handle on what kind of team this truly is.

"You play to win the game."

by MrWayneKeller on Jan 5, 2011 9:37 PM CST reply actions

CP has to be pissed off…the guy gets 24 points and 13 assists and we still lose…10 point 4th quarter lead gone in like 2 minutes.

by EaglesFanatic80 on Jan 5, 2011 9:37 PM CST reply actions

Quit Feeling Sorry For Him

He’s not the team. The entire team HAS to be pissed off. Not just one player.

"You play to win the game."

by MrWayneKeller on Jan 5, 2011 9:39 PM CST up reply actions

Not feeling sorry for him…just a wasted effort…just a total 4th quarter collapse…this team will not continue to win games with the bench that we have…it just plain sucks…when Willie Green is your best option off the bench and plays starter minutes…your team is not very good.

by EaglesFanatic80 on Jan 5, 2011 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

this team = fail

this is the 6th or 7th game this year they have loss because they can’t close out games. I’m tired of seeing Monty’s so called great defense get torched in the 2nd half of games. If they make the playoffs this team is 1 and done. The 11-1 start was a fluke. The minute they learn games our won and loss in 2nd half is the minute they become better.

by Jamian B on Jan 5, 2011 9:41 PM CST reply actions

I'm Sure They Understand

That you have to do better in the second half.

"You play to win the game."

by MrWayneKeller on Jan 5, 2011 9:44 PM CST up reply actions

one more thing

rohan you have to put up the hornets loss image. The picture of Raymond Felton and Dantoni it makes me laugh, and i think it will make me feel better about the loss.

kind of looked they had some real size inside but e]we were driving in OK.
They had theier bigs scoring and rbounding easily.
Jusy seemed all a cloud.
In fact, I faded out somehwere in the second quarter and I thought we were gonna win this one.
Somebody please help this drub haggles ind out.

I don't often get pissed off after games

But this is one of those where I had to step away a little after to see it more clearly

by Rohan on Jan 5, 2011 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

just before halftime

I saw Okafor has 2 fouls.
I thought to myself, he should be outa there.sure enough he gets that stupid 3rd foul and they drive the next three baskets up his driveway knowing he can’t do anything about it.
Poor…Oak should have been out with so little time left before the half.

by ppellico on Jan 5, 2011 9:54 PM CST reply actions

Willie Green

He’s not a terrible human being like Jarrett Jack, but he’s terrible offensively. Has no clue about ball movement, rotating, etc. The guy is a Black Hole. He cost us the game with his performance on offense.

by Hornets78 on Jan 5, 2011 9:58 PM CST reply actions

Of course he is

He single-handedly ruined this franchise with his selfishness. He sucks the life out of the bench with his dribbling and shooting. Doesn’t run the offense, doesn’t run the floor. He’s a team killer.
