The Hornets Shouldn't Trade Chris Paul to the New York Knicks

As you've no doubt heard by now, Chris Paul's agent has informed the New Orleans Hornets that his client is demanding a trade to the New York Knicks. Paul is himself denying it through "sources," but we've seen this public denial, private subterfuge act enough times in the past to smell it out immediately. The question now becomes how strict of a requirement "New York" is for Paul; if it's his only destination, he'll have backed his current team into a predicament you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.*

*Other than the Lakers. Or the Celtics. Or the Mavericks. Or the Heat. Or the Knicks. Or the Bucks. (2001, never forget).

The Knicks threw away all their assets in the Carmelo Anthony trade; that they could acquire a significantly better player in Chris Paul by trading away literally nothing is depressing beyond measure. But that's where we stand. A quick rundown of the Knicks' roster and assets. Keep in mind that Paul will make $16.3M this year (trade machine, for the masochistic, is here).

Asset: Carmelo Anthony
Salary: $18.5M

Verdict: The New York Knicks will not be trading him for Chris Paul.

Asset: Amar'e Stoudemire
Salary: $18.2M

Verdict: The New York Knicks will not be trading him for Chris Paul.

Asset: Chauncey Billups
Salary: $14.2M

Verdict: His contract expires this year. A straight up trade between Billups and Paul would be legal.

Asset: Ronny Turiaf
Salary: $4.4M

Verdict: Turiaf is a poor offensive rebounder, a poor defensive one, turns the ball over often, and also "is bad."

Asset: Renaldo Balkman
Salary: $1.7M

Verdict: Balkman has played 21 games the last two years, making a total six shots. He is 27 years old.

Asset: Toney Douglas
Salary: $1.1M

Verdict: Douglas is actually pretty awesome.

Asset: Bill Walker
Salary: $0.9M

Verdict: Bill Walker is injured a lot and also sucks.

Asset: Andy Rautins
Salary: $0.8M

Verdict: As a 24 year old rookie, he posted a -1.2 PER in 5 games.

Asset: Landry Fields
Salary: $0.8M

Verdict: Fields is a solid role player.

1st Round Draft Picks New York Cannot Trade Away:

2012 1st: Already traded to Houston
2013 1st: Can't trade 1sts in back to back seasons
2014 1st: Already traded to Denver
2015 1st: Can't trade 1sts in back to back seasons
2016 1st: Already traded to Denver
2017 1st: Can't trade 1sts in back to back seasons

Basically? The first year that New York could send us a first round draft pick is 2018. For a team whose future in terms of ownership, lease, and roster is in turmoil, that's basically worth nothing. Hell, the current CBA has an opt out clause after the 2017 season. There's a reasonable chance that another lockout is underway during the 2018 draft.

New York has no draft pick assets, and neither of their two player assets - Landry Field and Toney Douglas - have star potential. Even if we know, without a shadow of a doubt, that Chris Paul will not be a New Orleans Hornet past June 1, 2012, there's no value to be derived from moving Paul to where he wants to go; it's worth more to take a stand as a small market team - make it clear that no, a team cannot throw away all its assets, not pay a price for it, and still pick up one of the league's top 5 players for nothing. It's worth more to force Chris Paul to eat millions of dollars in losses, and go from there. And yes, I know that "taking a stand" here is absolutely meaningless; that's the point.

"Get whatever you can" simply isn't the right answer here.

Considering offense and defense

I’d rather have Lebron, CP3, Wade, Howard, Kobe, Dirk, Deron Williams, Gasol, Rose, Durant, LMA, Griffin, Randolph, Westbrook, Garnett than either Amar’e or Anthony for the 2011-2012 season. That’s 15 guys exactly.

Quibble on Randolph, whose 2009-2011 with Memphis have been thoroughly outstanding, all you want. Everyone else on that list is a lock for me over Anthony and Stoudemire if we’re talking current, single season value, assuming no injury. Almost every single one of them, outside of arguably Griffin/Durant/Gasol is a plus defender, something neither Anthony nor Stoudemire are even close to being.

by Rohan on Dec 3, 2011 3:22 AM CST up reply actions

decent list

i’ll contend with a few tho. First Gasol, who’s on the wrong side of 30, and drew ire from alot of folks(Kobe included) on his disappearance in last years playoffs.

Aldridge while steadily improving in his young career, put up his best numbers last season, and they don’t touch Amare’s bests. add to that that he’s not even the best player on his team, and he’s off for me.

I’m not putting that freak Blake on this list yet, it’s too small a sample size to put against the career Amare has had.

Zach Randoplh is an absolute joke and should not make this list. i can say this with much confidence because i watched him up close when he played for the knicks. he’ll give you the quietest double double you’ll ever see, and somehow it won’t help his team win. and if you think Amare plays no D, then that would make what big Z does out there a -1. i understand what he did last year, but that does not dismiss the years prior. no way.

Westbrook is a chucker at times, and there’s holes in his game that to me are alarming. he can shoot a team right out of games sometimes. besides, shoot first PGs don’t impress me. it’s almost an oxymoron. if Westbrook can get his pass game on par with his shoot game, then i’m right there with you.

Garnett isn’t top 15 anymore, you’re just putting him up there based on his pedigree. he’s maybe the 3rd best player on his own squad at this point. he’s a defensive stallworth but even he can’t guard Amare one on one anymore.

i’m splitting hairs on some, but i think you’re overrating others.

and if you want to put Melo in the argument as not belonging in the top 15, i’d even eliminate more of that list. he’s better or on par with the Rose’s, and Durants of this league, and better than everyone i’ve listed above. again, it’s MO, but i think Melo gets unnecessary heat in this world for demanding this trade last year. but if you step back and actually watch his game, you’ll agree.

Wade is not the best player on his team so he should be off?? i think that way of thinking is wrong, not to mention Aldrige is now the best player on his team. We are also not comparing carreers so i don’t see how that goes in the equation agaisnt Randolph and Blake.

That being said i like your answer and think you make a perfect description of Garnett, however you said that he is being put there because of pedigree yet you do the same with Amare ‘it’s too small a sample size to put against the career Amare has had.’.

Garnett's not there for "pedigree"

Wade not being the best player on his team

is different from Aldridge not being the best. one is not the best because his teammate is a top 3 player, the other is not the best but his teammate is top 25 at best. so that’s what i meant when i stated that.

thanks, yeah i used to love Garnett’s lock down D in Minny, and first few in Boston, but let’s be honest, age has caught up to the man. he’s not the defender he once was.

by Rohan on Dec 3, 2011 3:42 PM CST up reply actions

didn't say he was

but i’ve seen his act, good and bad. which i don’t think you’re taking into context when throwing the list together. also, when you’re LA, and you’re not better than Brandon Roy, who is a top 25 player at best, then yeah, it’s a perfect reason not to put them in any top lists.

take a stand

As much as we all love CP3 if he is going to do a Carmelo tard act with his agents then we do what Utah did with Williams. Hell if NJ want to swap Williams for CP3 and give us some other assets then pull the trigger.

Send him to the highest bidder and get back the maximum return. Denver already cleaned up NY so they have zero worthy trade assets. Plus does Chris really want to go to NY and get underpaid while catwoman and batgirl get paid more than him and be on a worse team than he was to start with?

by rjktan on Dec 1, 2011 5:06 PM CST reply actions

Agree, hopefully Demps plays hardball

If he says he won’t re-sign, fine. Then Demps doesn’t go out and make moves meant to improve the team RIGHT NOW in free agency. Grab young, cheap guys with potential and force Paul—one of the most hypercompetitive players in the league—to play out a season of his prime with a non-playoff contender, all the while knowing that the chance he has to take a pay cut in the off season is growing larger and larger. I say he breaks and becomes more amenable to other franchises outside of New York.

The only problem

with just trading him to the highest bidder is that most teams won’t trade real assets for someone they know he will not sign an extension with them.

by jtballard2 on Dec 2, 2011 6:51 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, and their best asset, Landry Fields, only has one year on his rookie deal anyway

Meaning he’ll play on our stinker of a team for a lost season, and then see him jet out of town when another GM over-values him and gives him too fat of a deal (just pessimistic conjecture on my end).

by Savage_Henry on Dec 1, 2011 5:26 PM CST reply actions

agreed

Plus Carmelo and Amare already doomed themselves to never getting another all-star teammate when they took such bloated deals. The only way to fit 3 stars on a team is to do what the Heat guys did. As much as we despise them the non-max deals they all signed makes the difference.

by rjktan on Dec 1, 2011 5:29 PM CST up reply actions

One point of contention

Bill Walker does not suck. He is a very good long-range shooter and a surprisingly efficient scorer, very high True Shooting %. Also he may or may not be announcer Mike Breen’s secret son.
As for everything else. Yes, the Knicks offer the Hornets basically nothing from a trade perspective and yes Paul will lose roughly 40 million if he signs with the Knicks as a FA. These are things that are obvious and immutable facts.
Assuming that Paul’s final goal is to play for the Knicks no matter what (somewhat unprovable), the Hornets have a few options.

Let Paul walk in FA, spite him out of 40 million, and get nothing.
Trade Paul to a team willing to rent him until the offseason, get minor pieces. Whether there will be actual team willing to do this is debatable.
Trade Paul to the Knicks, get minor pieces.

Not really much of a choice, but I don’t see many alternatives.

Also “Verdict: Douglas is actually pretty awesome.” is very, very true.

If I was an owner I'd rather let him walk and lose $40 million than let him demand trades...

Yes, that is what a normal person would do

But being emotional and making the best business decision are two different things.
Is spiting Paul worth losing him for nothing and forever tainting the organization’s relationship with him?

by Mikel L on Dec 1, 2011 7:41 PM CST up reply actions

If taking a chance that Paul will take an extra $40 million means I lose out on 1 year of Fields and Douglass so be it.

If NY was actually offering a difference maker… then a business decision might be in order.

Currently the offer is simply laughable compared to the chance that Paul is bluffing and doesn’t want to give up $40 million.

by ap3604 on Dec 1, 2011 7:48 PM CST up reply actions

Bill Walker = Spare parts. Landry Fields = 2nd-round spare parts. Saying Tony Douglas is awesome is like saying Salim Stoudemire was awesome in his heydey. No thanks NYK. Please Demps do not trade him for the Knicks’ bad players

I only caught the end of the channel 8 news broadcast,

And it was Paul saying something along the lines of how he is happy to be here with the team and that rumors are just a part of the business. Did I miss something in the beginning of the broadcast that makes you think it was all fluff?

I remember this same scenario at the beginning of last year, but it soon died down over time. It wouldn’t surprise me if he gets traded, but I’m not believing any of this until it happens.

This article is spot on. No team Chris wants to play for can afford him, even as a free agent. Other than maybe Boston. But will an aging Pierce and Rondo be the pieces he wants to play with? by Rohan on Dec 1, 2011 9:30 PM CST up reply actions

Fact

If Carmelo was planning to get CP3 to come play with him in NY then why didn’t he take less money so it could happen? Ans: because he has the same mindset as Amare, money + celeb status > winning.

by rjktan on Dec 1, 2011 9:35 PM CST reply actions

why is Amare getting shrapnel here?

he went to a team that promised to pay him what he was worth. his old team(phoenix) had their opportunities, and never took them. they didn’t even want to insure his contract, they basically told him, ’you’re damaged goods, and will forever be in Nash’s shadow’

he wanted a new start, and a fresh place to do it. what’s so wrong with that? what celeb status did he get? a shoe deal with Nike, and an appearance on Sesame Street?

And Amare def. wants to win. he took all of NY on his back before the Melo deal, playing the best basketball of his life. i wish the rest of the world could’ve seen what he did, what’d he have, like 11 straight 30+ games at one point? rebounds, blocks, scoring, everything was up. there was a reason he was getting early consideration for MVP.

and i’m so sick of people looking down on players for getting that big payday. like if your boss offered you a 4,000 dollar raise tomorrow, you wouldn’t take it? stop counting people’s money, and judging them for making it.

Nuggets fan here

I have sympathy for you guys. Don’t mean to say that in a condescending way, but we Nugget fans dealt with “Where is Melo going to go?” all season long, and for the first time EVER it made the season unbearable.

I agree with the premise. Don’t see the Knicks giving up anything that would entice the Hornets to do a deal.

Think the Hornets need to set a deadline when they are not discussing a Paul trade anymore… and state that it will NOT be to New York at their expected offer. You force Paul’s hand that way, and push New York to try to get a third partner and at the least increase the offer. This way the Hornets are in control, and if the Clippers come in with a deal centered around Eric Gordon they are more likely to convince Paul to take the deal to go to the Clippers.

Once the season starts, if a deal that isn’t fair can not be reached… you make sure to contact Paul’s agent to make them understand that he will not be dealt, and that you respect him as a player, but hope he finishes his contract as a professional.

as sad as it would be to see CP3 leave, I think this would be the best way to handle it. Force the hand of anyone who wants him and CP3 himself. Once these stars start pouting you take either Utah or Denver’s approach and don’t give in for a bag of doritos :P

i am a clipper fan

I seriously doubt paul would agree to the extension if Gordon is involved in the deal. I think a Kaman,Minny Pick and Bledsoe deal is much more likely.

Gordon was hypothetical

But Paul is a top ten player in most fans eyes. Some team is going to give up a young piece plus a draft pick. In the Clippers situation, to have a chance to get him they would likely have to give up Gordon or Jordan.

If not, some other team would jump in even if it’s for a rental (Boston, Lakers). Top ten players don’t get traded for expiring contracts, bench players and picks. Just doesn’t happen. It’s why the Knicks have no chance to trade for Paul, unless Shumpert just EXPLODES on the scene.

Yeah

If Chris Paul’s not worth Eric Gordon then be quiet and stick with your team. Other than that, you have to give up something to get something.

i never say paul wasn't worth Gordon

he probably is, just saying there is no way Paul agrees being traded to us without Gordon. By the way that Minny pick has huge value, is a top pick in a very good draft and i have a hard time believing you will get more value than Kaman,Minny Pick, Bledsoe and Jordan for a rental and Paul won’t agree to an extension without Gordon.

Tough

Guess he’ll have to leave the money on the table as a free agent this offseason then.

Hornets Fans Delusional?

1. This one could be seen clearly coming miles away. There was the trade demand before last season, which some hornets fans were quick to pretend wasn’t really a trade demand. Bascially, CP privately demanded a trade and then later publicly denied it, while letting his agent trash talk the NO organization, followed that up with a toast and some statements which needed to be “clarified”, etc. In summary, the signs were clear and many. Hornets fans need to come to terms with the fact that this was inevitable. It amazed me how far some fans were trrying to cover up for CP and pretend that the whole mess before the beginning of last season was all just media manufactured when it was clearly CP behind it all.

2. It would have been to trade CP earlier before the most recent “demand” came to light. Now the Hornets again have their backs against the wall. Hopefully, they’ll resist any rushed decision, but it won’t be easy.

3. I don’t begrude that CP wants to leave. To each his own. In fact, I would venture so far as to say that it’s unclear whether CP3 would really be worth $17 million in two years, which is what we’d have to pay him. He had a good series against the Lakers, but running rings around Grandpa Fisher hasn’t completely convinced me that he’s completely back on his game. Ideally, we trade him soon. If we can’t find a decent package, then we will just have to ride it out until his contract is over. That won’t be terribly pleasant, with a disgruntled star on the roster, but that is something we should prepare for. Hopefully CP will act professionially and try to do his job.

Even with CP last season, it was still a struggle to make the playoffs. This season would not be different even if we have CP.

I say let the rebuilding begin!

Just Say No to a Trade With New York

Not only are the Knicks’ players bad, but they are essentially cast in their best offensive light because of Mike D’Antoni’s system.

With that in mind, it is simply terrifying to think we would trade a top-5 for the Knicks’ positively disappointing role players that will probably turn to mush as soon as they’re in a D’Antoni-less system.

Cash plus who? Douglas? I agree that he’s a great 2nd-string PG, but that’s hardly trade bait. Who else? Ronny Turiaf? Renaldo Balkman? Pass.

Please Dell Demps, if you’re listening out there, don’t acquiesce to Paul’s Christmas wishes to let him play in the bright-lights out of good will. The Hornets need to survive, and to do it, they’re going to need a great return. We probably will get more out of the publicity of rumors about CP3 wanting to go to play for the Knicks than we could actually get from the Knicks spare-parts.

Literally, looking a trade to the Knicks is like evaluating one of those hilariously awful fantasy sport trade proposals we all get – those of us who are nerdy enough to play – every season in every sport. Just say no to a deal with New York. I’m thinking Clipperland.
