Notes from Hornets Open Practice
The Hornets hosted an open practice at the New Orleans Arena today, right after introducing Eric Gordon, Al- Farouq Aminu, and Chris Kaman. The guys went through a couple drills (with the three newest Hornets watching from the bench), then split into teams to scrimmage. The likely Hornets starters (minus Gordon) were on the black team, while mostly reserves and camp tryout guys made up the white team. The results are about you would expect when the starters are up against a scout team, but it ended up being a close score as the black team prevailed 46-43 (I think.). Some notes after the jump.
-Both Qunicy Pondexter and Trevor Ariza seem to have spent some time working on their mid-range game, as both took several shots on pull-ups, with predictably mixed results.
- The focal point of the White team's offense was the newly re-signed Jason Smith. He started out by missing his first 3 jumpers, but settled in hitting several in his normal 15-20ft range. Dude can still shoot it.
-Smith may have had more success early because he was playing center for the White team and was being guarded by Emeka Okafor, who was either hesitant, or too slow to get out on the perimeter and contest the jumpers. Okafor-Kaman at the same time will not work if the other team plays anything resembling a stretch 4.
-There is a player named Squeaky Johnson on the Hornets. He is a PG, is fast, and has very long dreadlocks. He had a solid game at Memphis last night, and looks to be competing for the 3rd PG spot on the team. Had a few nice plays in the scrimmage.
-After signing late last week, both Jason Smith and Carl Landry played in the scrimmage, and looked to be in decent shape. Carl started for the Black squad with most of the other projected starters.
-Speaking of Carl:
Carl Landry with best fans ever.
-Chris Kaman is a funny dude. He hijacked his interview from Hornets MC Rob Nice and had the crowd laughing on a few occasions. I'm sure we'll be getting some good quotes from him this year.
-I was randomly chosen to participate in a 3-point shootout at halftime of the scrimmage. I elected to give it a try despite currently lacking an ACL in my right knee and having not picked up a ball since around June. I was paired with Marco Belinelli and faced off against another fan who was teamed with Jarrett Jack. The results were about as expected for me: 0-6 with at least 3 airballs. I believe I drew iron twice. I wasn't paying attention (trying not to fall down), but apparently Marco did not fare a whole lot better than I did. We lost to Jarrett Jack and his partner by a couple of baskets. Thankfully my counterpart did not make any shots either, but Jarrett outperformed Marco to get the win. Marco called me "boy" about 5 times in 3 sentences before the contest while attempting to pump me up. Jarrett seemed really into it as well. We were told the prize for the winner was two tickets to opening night, but they gave us both tickets anyway. I got two lower bowl tickets and a bunch of assorted Hornets goodies. Pretty cool. (There is video of this floating around out there. If we get a hold of it I'll put it on here so you can all have a laugh at my expense. If was truly a horrendous performance.)
Update - Video via our own Matt McIntosh:
-As we were walking out of the Arena we were asked to take part in a photo shoot for the Hornets to use in their ad campaign this year. We agreed and got in line. After a few minutes, Eric Gordon came out in full uniform and joined in on the fan photos. We didn't get to meet Gordon as he left right before our turn, but Carl Landry took his place and you can see the photo above. They then instructed us to take some single photos and made me do stupid things like yell, fist pump, and point. If I ever see a picture of me doing a 3pt monocle on a billboard somewhere, I will surely crash my car out of shame.
-In all it was a fun thing for the Hornets to do as a reward for fans and provided a small glimpse as to what we may see from the team this year. I heard that around 1,500 fans showed up today, which I think is a nice turnout for an event like this. Even more excited for the season to start.

Hahaha!
“If I ever see a picture of me doing a 3pt monocle on a billboard somewhere, I will surely crash my car out of shame.”
Too funny!
I had a great time at the open practice. I was kind of surprised to hear Dentmon got waived already.
Moses Ehambe also
So that’s 6 DLeague guys left now I think (depending on whether you consider Summers a DLeague guy)
Wow...I suck.
I missed the first one by about 3 feet. Seriously underestimated how much further the NBA 3pt line is. WAY out of my range (obviously).
Probably not my best idea
I’m pretty sore right now, but I couldn’t pass that up! I dare em to give me another chance when I’m healthy.

Ugh
No Local TV for Wednesday’s game either. Looks like the only way to watch it will be to be at the Arena
It's like Cox Sports
Is bitter that they are actually covering all the regular season games. So they are determined not to cover the preseason games. Here’s what I don’t get, minus the actual cost of coverage, they should make it back in ad revenue. I mean, they don’t have anything good on CST other than Hornets games….
I couldn't think of anything to do for the individual photo
Way too early in the day. So I just stuck my hands in the air and yelled Whoo. So yeah, same thing, if there is a pic of me on the program with my mouth open I’ll … probably spontaneously die. Haha

A Flaming Moe?
Or another incendiary alcoholic beverage?
Haha.
Lucky I had to leave. I hate those “be excited” photos. I mean, the Hornets lady was saying I wasn’t smiling enough!
I think youd have been
Because you would have just been hanging out with Carl Landry which you cant poo-poo (although you might try)
Sorry for the quality of the video/photo
I do better work with a real camera, not a pair of cell phones. My true contribution is Bob didnt have any Hornets gear on, so I lent him my sweater for the shoot.
I know better than to ever be in front of a camera lol
The scrimmage was really fun and by the end, I was pretty jazzed for the season to start with the team we have. Im still trying to work out generic cheers that cheer for wins or losses depending on if we want to tank for a better pick. Win or lose this season, I think its gonna be fun
new to the site
Hey just want to tell everyone what’s up. New to the site and cannot wait for the season to start. Do not forget first game is on NBA TV. Also the last preseason game was on tv you just had to find the link on line. If I find a link for Wednesday’s game I will link. Go hornets.
Welcome to the site!
Did not know that about there being a broadcast. Definitely do share if you can on Wednesday… dying to see these new guys
I really like the Hornets roster so far for a rebuilding team:
- Jarret Jack
- Eric Gordon
- Trevor Ariza
- Carl Landry
- Emeka Okafor
- Marco
- Aminu
- Kaman
Really balanced and deep squad really if you think about it. The Hornets have a bright future in store =)

Kind of makes you wonder why it’s so hated by fan’s to trade a superstar on a bad team to rebuild?
I actually like this roster, with the lowered expectations that come with it, more than the team with Paul on it and being frustrated of going through the season knowing we were going to get bounced from the first round.

Are you an idiot dude?

yeah
That’s the problem. It’s half a rebuilding team and half a team that was meant as a win now team. I definitely agree that we’ll be quite competitive at times.
Problem is that 4/5s of the guys you named (hopefully) won’t be around once we really start rebuilding.
I was there
I got The Commish’s autograph (along with Dentmon lol). He didn’t seem to be in the happiest mood. But I wouldn’t be if I were jet lagging…
Anyways, it was a good time. Nice try on the three pointers (we were boo-ing yall LOL).
I actually thought there was another guard who late in the scrimmage out-performed Squeaky. He slashed to the goal a number of times with ease. I can’t recall his name.
Reppin' the Lafayette Hornets fans.
Hmm Rohan Question for you.
If the 2012 Hornets played the 2011 Hornets who wins in a seven game series? I actually think this year’s team is better.
I would say
The 2011 Hornets that played the Lakers in the playoffs would beat the 2012 Hornets, but other than that, it’s probably a toss up
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
Depends who our backup point is
And I’m not sold on Landry as a legitimate post defender for a full season.
But honestly, I think I really do agree with you and mknkachow
Not sold on
I’m not sold on Jarrett Jack leading a team for a full season either. That’s admittedly the perfect situation for Jack, but not a perfect situation for his team.
don't kid yourself about that
We’ll definitely be ok, but there will be plenty enough hosings this season. The lower level of competition this season in the Wet should help.
Lakers are in disarry after trading a core championship player and Kobe divorce.
Spurs are a year older after a bad flop last year.
Utah is rebuilding.
Houston is trying to rebuild.
Much of the competition will be from LA Clippers, Memphis, Portland, and Denver, but those teams are still somewhat unproven.
Dallas and OK City will probably be at the top, but there’s no telling how the rest will finish.
AS far as Portland
I think with Roy gone and Lamarcus not coming back anytime soon, they are not as good. Also Clippers may have gained CP3 but who will be there shooting guard and who will play center. With so many games in a short time span I think the younger teams who have good athletes might do the best this year.
Blazers
Last season, people wrote the Blazers off for the same reasons (major injuries to two of their top players, etc.) and they won 48 games.
Arguably the deepest team in the West at 2 and 3 positions.
Raymond Felton
Jamal Crawford
Nicolas Batum
Wesley Matthews
Gerald Wallace
In the front court, LeMarcus Aldridge is a question mark, but they still have Camby and pressure is off on Greg Oden who was developing into a top center before his most recent injury.
I expect another playoff berth for the Blazers.
Clippers – DeAndre Jordan can dominate on defense at center, and that’s really all they need. Billups, Randy Foye or Mo Williams can play SG if necessary. I agree that C and SG are a question mark, but keep in mind that last season their Center and SG missed major time as well.
Blazers starting 5
I’m geussing it may be as follows:
Raymond Felton
Wesley Matthews
Nicolas Batum
Gerald Wallace
Marcus Camby.
Off the pine: Jamal Crawford, Greg Oden, Patty Mills.
Definitely playoff caliber. I’m guesisng that Aldridge rejoins them at some point in the season.
Also, going forward, they get to take Roy’s salary off their books since he’s retired which will clear up room to sign some help in the future. They’ll be a force.
he's only 23
I still believe he can be a procutive player.
I’m rooting for him. He’s had a stretch of bad luck.
To Be Fair
He may miss all of this season as well. Red’s probably right.

I root for him too
But to call it bad luck?
Not a chance in he’ll my friend. Bad genetics and bad technique will prevent him from ever being successful.
NY - lol
It’s like they’re cloning themselves. Baron Davis signed by Knicks.
NY seems to be quickly becoming the mecca for talented players with a questionable commitment to winning.
dont be too surprised if Kaman earns the starting center spot and you guys move Emeka to power (that will be a great pairing). Gordon will quickly show worth. He is one of the best shooters in the game and is quick to the slash. Good defender.
Dont worry about Jack too much, he will surely end up playing a supporting role to Gordon, he’s just that good. On the olympic team some under estimated him because he was always under the radar. By the end of the olympics, he was one of the more valuable players. I look forward to his growth on the Hornets.
Energy * Focus * No Excuses
"For [Griffin] getting in the way of Andre Miller’s 40 yard dash?" -S. Perrin
yeah
Kaman can be VERY good in the post and on the boards. Too early to write him off. But there are other question marks about him (health, fit, etc.)
I think Emeka can generally defend 4s. It’s his offense at the 4 that I wonder about.
As for Jack? I’m plenty worried about him. He’s always been good at finding his offense, but it’s his 5 assists and 2.5 turnovers in 33 minutes that I worry about as a point guard. His main gift is controlling the ball and setting up his shot off drives and pullups. If his role is to play a supporting role to Gordon, then that means he’s being misutilized.
He made sense last year to give the 2nd unit offensive spark (even though he played poorly for stretches), this year, he’s incompatible. If he was known for setting up his teammates or for hard nosed defense, then I’d say yeah, we’ve got a nice complement to Gordon, but that’s not the case.
Agree
Jack isn’t great at setting people up, but at the same time, I don’t think Gordon will need much setting up for his own shots.
I think Jack will work as a reasonable complement by creating (for himself most likely) on possessions to give Gordon a break and to keep Gordon from overextending himself
that
That’s the role he played for CP at times last year. And it was fine (in theory) because he did it off the bench and for short stretches.
Now he’s set for 33 to 37 minutes per game, depending on quality of his backup (who is currently listed as Jerome Dyson). Gordon doesn’t need to be given 30+ minute breaks and that’s the problem. If the ball is in Gordon’s hands for much of the game (as it should be), then Jack is being misutilized, because he’s not really a spot up shooter or weakside threat or guy who brings up the ball to initiate the offense for others.
Further, unless we sign a solid PG, Jack’s backup may in fact be Gordon himself, in which case Gordon overextending himself may become an issue as well.
Keep in mind
The Paul-Jack duo was the most productive (+7 per 100 possessions) backcourt the Hornets played all of last season
yep
As I mentioned, it definitely was fine in stretches. But regardless, nobody in their right mind thought that starting Paul and Jack together and playing Jack for 35 minutes would have been a good idea for the whole season last year (especially since some of those sets included CP playing at SG).
If NBA converted to a 3 on 3 format, I think Jack would be considered one of the best players in the league. Unfortunately, it’s a 5 on 5 game.
