Hornets 85, Suns 84: The Commissioner Administrates All Over the Suns
It was always positioned to be a memorable night - the first time we would see the Hornets since Chris Paul destroyed the Los Angeles Lakers, demanded a trade, didn't demand a trade, was almost traded, was traded, wasn't actually traded, and then, surprise!, was traded. But 47 minutes of grimy, gloomy, grungy, uninspired basketball proceeded to then beat that notion about the head with a baseball bat. You expected real basketball after everybody just took six months off? You actually thought Ronnie Price V. Greivis Vasquez would result in a pleasant evening? Joke's on you, stupid person that enjoys basketball!
But then the final minute happened. With one fadeaway 20 footer and an equally important defensive play on the other end, a game that had gone from significant to insipid was all of a sudden unforgettable. The Commissioner had arrived.
Let's not get too carried away, of course. The Phoenix Suns aren't a playoff caliber team, and it's likely that this performance will go down as one of their worst of the season. One point wins generally will not predict the future very well. And for all his late game heroics, Eric Gordon isn't Chris Paul. But (and this is an important but!) he's our future. Chris Paul is history. The goal now is to build with an eye towards the +6 paradigm, which calls for Eric Gordon + Monty's Defense + ???. The last one we'll need to address via the draft, but nights like this - where the first two elements of the equation shined - are just as important to that +6 future. If everything falls perfectly over the next few seasons, we'll remember tonight, trivial as it may seem now, as the beginning of it all.
- Let's start with Eric Gordon for obvious reasons. I'm just going to shout words here because Eric Gordon! Body control! Explosion! Hesitation dribble! Eurostep! Under the legs dribbling! Upper body strength! Clutch! (Which is a cliched concept that may or may not actually exist, or at the very least, be provable statistically!) Footspeed! Defensive awareness! Perimeter stopper! Chinstrap!
- It looks for all the world like Carl Landry will be offensive option #2 this season, which, given the rest of the roster, isn't entirely unreasonable. What is less reasonable though is the Hornets' apparent belief that he's an exact like-for-like replacement for David West. This is dumb. 6 of Landry's 15 attempts came from outside of ten feet, and he converted just 2 of them. This really shouldn't come as much of a surprise either - through his career, Landry shoots in the mid-to-high 30% range from outside 10 feet. That isn't the worst mark in the league, but it's also key to note that Landry is one of the NBA's best finishers at the rim. Tonight, he got just 3 looks within 4 feet of the rim. A 6:3 ratio of outside to inside shots needs to be something the Hornets try and flip.
- The driving factor behind the we-are-all-drowning-in-a-swamp feel to the Hornets offense? Nobody created for others. The team finished with just 10 assists with players primarily approaching their matchups one-on-one. A lot of it has to be chalked up to the lack of a point guard obviously, but Jarrett Jack isn't the greatest playmaker himself. Gordon "led" the team with 3 assists (Vasquez finished with 2 and had 2 blown by Okafor), and it's something to keep an eye on moving forward.
- Chris Kaman looked quite crisp offensively. His jumper was on point, and his moves in the lane were virtually unguardable. 10 points and 5 rebounds (3 offensive) in 20 minutes from a bench big is fine production. On the flip side, his fellow Clipper transplant, Aminu, wasn't afforded the opportunity to really do anything.
- Phoenix started the game pounding the offensive glass - they picked up 50% of their own misses in the first quarter and over 35% for the first half. But the Hornets really doubled down on the D-glass in the second half with the Suns' offensive rebounding percentage dipping to 25% by the end of the game. If you remember back to last year, defensive rebounding was one of the Hornets' greatest strengths, something I don't really see changing in 2011-2012.
- A note on the point guards: Greivis Vasquez might be the "point guard version" of Quincy Pondexter in terms of overall productivity, but his game and his problems are actually the exact opposite of Quincy's. Where Quincy really struggled to make an impact when he got minutes last year, Vasquez tried to do way too much tonight. He did create a couple nice plays for teammates and for himself (10 points, 2 assists), but he was also wild and out of control quite often and finished with 5 turnovers. It's a double-edged sword that will keep him chained to a bench role for the foreseeable future. Squeaky Johnson only got 2 minutes behind Vasquez, during which he put in a textbook box out on Steve Nash for a rebound but also dribbled into a corner and picked up his dribble. I wanted to see more of him, but Monty Williams' decision to turn Eric Gordon into the fourth quarter playmaker was the correct one.
- Overall, it was a very cohesive defensive effort. Phoenix was the league's 9th most efficient offense last year and while rust has to be mentioned here, the Hornets did an impressive enough job at contesting the Suns' jumpers. Phoenix scored just 84 points on 88 possessions, good for 95.5 offensive efficiency, or 12 whole points below league average. Of course, the Hornets' offense was right around that mark too.
- Because you're all awesome, here's The Commissioner's game winner in HD!
- LOVE General Greivis' reaction to the shot (starting at 1:10 on the above video). I don't blame Gordon for it because it's not in his personality, but we need some excitement! this year, and Vasquez looks to be the man for it.
- One more note on Gordon - his final line (20 points on 18 shots) doesn't look that impressive, but this could very easily have been a 30 point night for him. He missed five open and in-rhythm looks from three (out of the six attempts he took and missed), and as a career 38% three point shooter, those shots will start falling soon enough.
- Just kidding, make that two more notes - anyone catch Gordon's heavy inbound deny of Steve Nash on the Suns' final possession? Baller. Gordon also became the defacto Nash defender on the Suns' previous possession, sticking with him and knocking the ball out of bounds before Nash got by him on the second attempt (but J. Dudley missed the shot).
- Basketball! Hornets! Eric Gordon! Woohoo!

A nice start to the season
This was a game that Gordon would have gone for over 30 if it were played in a month or so. Like the rest of the players he will need time to get his legs under him and in basketball shape. You won’t see him missing so many open looks from beyond the arc.
Having watched him closely over his career, I noticed that he’s improved his dribbling from last season. He was very good defensively last year and even better in this game. I loved how he stepped up to take on Nash in crunch time.
Go, Hornets.

LMAO
that Ariza becomes efficient from the field post-CP3. So what it’s only 1 game.
Personally, I’d like to see Kaman start for us. As Rohan alluded to, Landry isn’t DWest even though he thinks he’s the automatic #2. Would much rather have Kaveman get those 15 shots.
My thoughts on tonight
Wow what a way to start the post-CP3 era and what I think will be a crucial yet great season season for this franchise. The Commish has some major “cajones” and showed it with that game-winner…get used to that Hornets fans, me thinks it will be happening a lot. I gotta say my new favorite Hornets might be “General” Grevis. I have to politely diagree with Rohan’s assessment of him tonight. I think/hope he won’t be another Jerryd Baylees in waiting (turnover prone, shoot-first PG), I really do think he’s more of a playmaker and how about the energy and enthusiasm he showed on the bench….gotta love it.
I hope that he isn’t “chained to the bench” for his play tonight, and I don’t think he will considering he will considering Monty played him for like 27 minutes in is first action as a Hornet. I know everyone wants to give “Squeaky” a shot and he’s a hometown favorite but I think it would be a big mistake to give him minutes over Grevis and in his limited action tonight he made me cringe everytime he touched the ball. I do think Grevis will ave a bigger impact than Q-Pon did and can/will contribute in a variety of ways (just my opinion).
I think problem #1 is fixing/boosting Aminu’s confidence issue. The kid looked like a deer in the headlights sometimes, through a pass away trying to do too much and if he can settle down a bit, the kid’s got so much potential I know he will break through.
All and all tho not bad for 1st game with no PG after no basketball for 6 months. Loved the D (held the Suns to 84 on the road) and nowhere to go but up. Geaux Hornets!!!
Pretty much agree with Recap
Pretty much agree with the recap.
Encouraging to win our first game away from home on a game winning shot by our new star.
However, although there were some good signs, it’s too early to get excited too much. Suns looked like a bad team out there, and we faced little defensive pressure and only had to beat out a lukewarm offensive effort. It was really two mediocre teams out there, and one of them won by a point over the other, so nothing to get excited about.
Gordon is certainly explosive offenisvely and he was pretty good on defense as well.
We have a solid rotation at Center. Kaman really has the low post skills and positioning that Okafor often lacks. I remember last year during a game when Okafor was out, Gortat domionated us for 26 points. This game, we still had trouble stopping the Nash/Gortat pick and roll and Lopez put up frustratingly good numbers against us, but it did at least feel like we had centers of our own who were trying to fight back.
Most of the players played ok. Importantly, the defense was solid, though we seem to have gotten some help with the Suns slipping and sliding all over the court in the early going.
Rocky was solid bringing the ball up as PG in the early going. Greivis had some moments, but 5 TOs off the bench isn’t going to cut it.
It was all just good enough to win against a mediocre team like the Suns, but we probably would have lost against a playoff team.
Around the NBA
I watched bits and pieces of various games today and have the following observations.
Ricky Rubio is a GOD handling the basketball. When the ball is in his hands, magical things can happen. Although the Wolves got him 2 years later than they had hoped, the wait may have been well worth it, as Rubio looks very well poised for a Rookie after the additional seasoning at the Euro League.
Shocking to see the Mavs get dismantled two games in a row. But you have to believe they’ll soon turn their ship around. Ditto the Lakers.
Washington looks like a mess again.
Marcus Thornton put up a smooth 27 in his season debut and matched Kobe jumper for jumper in the Kings win (though they were not always guarding each other). Congrats to the player who picked Thornton in the first round in our fantasy league ^^.
Western conf.
I see the West shaking out as follows this year:
Top Echelon Playoff Teams:
OKC
Spurs
Dallas
Clippers
Second Tier Playoff Teams:
Portland
Lakers
Memphis
Denver
On the Playoff Bubble (outside shot to make the playoffs)
Houston
Sacramento
Golden State
Probably Won’t Make the Playoffs
Minnesota
NO
Phoenix
Utah
Things are more fluid and less predictable this year so I think any team could move up or down one category.
I actually think
Denver will be in the top 4. No go-to-scorer, but they are the deepest team in probably the whole league.

Clips fan here...
Just wanted to say I was happy to see you guys get the win and see Gordon get that game winner. Everyone is making the Clips out to be the winners of the Paul trade (there is WAY too much hype surrounding them for my liking, almost like the Heat last year) but I think you guys (with some help from Stern) did well. The pick will be valuable in this draft, and Gordon is a baller. When news broke of the trade, my initial feeling was actually a negative one, because we gave up Gordon. I was pretty down about the trade, which says a lot considering we were getting Chris Paul. Enjoy him, he’s really an awesome player. Gordon, Kaman, Aminu and even newly acquired Vasquez(personal favorite) have made the Hornets my number 2 team this year.
Congrats on the win, and hopefully we’ll see you in the playoffs.
Good luck clips
As you can see in my post above, I have you guys 4th in the West this year, in the group of the top echelon playoff teams!
Ariza
Has some infatuation with taking long shots and throwing the ball up when he’s out of control around the rim. He is absolutely frustrating to watch. I’m not sure all the defense in the world is worth his offensive ineptitude.

Gordon
has the emotion of a Tim Duncan. But I think he’ll come out of his shell as he realizes that he is THE MAN in New Orleans.
One thing that was not mentioned is the rotation, which was off because of JJack’s suspension. Belinelli had a forgettable game, but his role should be spot-up shooter, not distributor. He should come around and provide some 3-point relief when he is back at SG. He’ll also be coming off the bench, which I think is better suited for him and the team considering his defensive shortcomings.
I think Wednesday will be exciting. I’ll be at the Hive on Friday, when hopefully the Hornets will pull a repeat of last night.

The Commissioner is blue collar.
He just does work and does it well.

That's what I loved about EJ.
Awesome worker, even greater personality. He’s letting his playing do the work. Man he’s going to have a break out year. He just needs to settle in and know he’s the No. 1 option. he’s so unselfish too, but he should create for his teammates more. His ball handle looks like it has improved as well. Miss him with the Clips.

Ariza is ?
Those 2 freethrows Ariza missed towards the end of the game had me ready to throw a bottle at the tv but Saints was on the other channel and Brees was about to break Marino’s record. Does he have wheels on the bottom of his sneakers? I Like and agree with njennings. I really don’t know if his inconsistencies on offense can make up for his good defense. I see why he’s traded every other year. Got me thinking what we could get for him….. Maybe a bench player and a 6-pack of Snickers……
geaux hornets!!!
Gordon looks like he will be a star!!! defense looks great. Im really waiting to see our bench players produce points off the bench and develop. Because we need more than one scorer. And get that ball to Kaman too!
ALL ABORD THE TRENT RICAHRDSON TRAIN!!!
Hornets will make the playoffs
Western Conference is as weak as it has been in years. Lakers will be down, Dallas will be down because of substandard guard play, Houston isn’t any great shakes, and I am not believing yet in Portland. SA will be healthier and probably better, OKC will be the class of the division, followed by the Clips (can’t believe I just said that)

My first game watching EJ as a Hornet last night
We Clipper fans love CP3 but really miss EJ. Don’t be concerned about EJ’s 3’s as he has the sweetest shot in the league beyond the arc this side of Stephen Curry. EJ is also extremely efficient and does not need to jack up a bunch of ill-advised shots like a Michael Beasley or Monta Ellis to get his points. Beware of Kamen though. As talented as he is, he will frustrate the hell out of you through out the season.
"Who wants a free Sharpie?"
He started off slow last year too and ended up at 38%.
I believe he missed his first 30 3 pt attempts lol.
Proud member of Club FTR. falconPUNCH! for president!
Yup
It might of been because he was the primary ball handler, and creating for others. For the first couple of months, Gordon averaged close to 25.5ppg 5.5apg 4rpg and getting to the line almost 10 attempts a game. But he was missing his 3pt shot. Once he was relieved of being the primary ball handler with Baron Davis back, his 3pt shot start shooting up. He’s improved that transition though so expect him to average around those stats for the season or better! With those stats and remarkable D, the Hornets got a definite Star, and possible Super Star.

For what it's worth
EJ came into his own last season as the Clippers’ go to guy in the clutch. So, what he did to Phoenix last night is not unexpected. For those of you who are stats geeks, here are some key numbers for Gordon in clutch time last year: FG% of over 55%, an eFGA% of over 64%, FT% of 93% and a scoring average of 38.4 per 48 minutes of clutch time.
More info at 82games. com if you’re interested.
Ariza on the other hand
I checked Ariza’s clutch time statistics on 82games.com when I looked up Gordon’s. Last year Ariza made only 2 of 11 foul shots during clutch time. A very, very small sample size but still not the guy you would want at the foul line. The year before at Houston Ariza was 13 of 18 from the foul line during clutch time.
For what it’s worth.
Great Win
Just woke up this morning and watched the game entirely and it was a great win for the team. Encouraging signs going forward too. I’m surprised to see Vasquez play so well considering he’s only been with the team for a day but I imagine he’ll cut down on those turnovers and play better here eventually. Or not, maybe. He does play reckless sometimes. I jumped when I saw Gordon make that shot there at the end. Just cold blooded. The team in general played really hard and there’s a lot to be proud of from last night’s performance. I, like you, would like to see more of Landry down in the post but we’ll have to wait and see if they enforce that. Him playing out around the perimeter last season made sense because he was in David West’s role but now he needs to go back to what he’s best at. There’s time for all of that, though.
Go Hornets!

EJ FOR THE WIN!!!
Im a clippers fan and it was awesome to see EJ nail the game winning shot. You guys are really going to enjoy him. Good luck to you guys, I plan on watching at least 20 games to see how you guys are doing.

WHO WANTS A FREE SHARPIE?? -- Blake Griffin
Odd...there are more Clipper fan posts here than NO fans lol.
Anyway.
Not sure why Kaman isn’t starting over Okafor….or at least shift Okafor to PF.
Kaman does not clog the lane so they can play together.
He’s starting caliber and prior to last year (injuries) an all-star.
Proud member of Club FTR. falconPUNCH! for president!
kaman worked well off the bench last year behind deandre jordan. and deandre jordan is like a more athletic but really really raw okafor…
there are a ton of clips fans here because theres a ton of Eric gordon fans. i was living in oakland last year , went to a warriors blowout of the clips wearing a clipper practice jersey and ran into a guy in oracle arena with a eric gordon jersey. honestly as much as griffin was the clipper star, gordon i was just a fan of more. he just was quiet, did his thing and did it well. i liked that a lot about him and im sure you hornets fans will too.
Gordon is great...
As a long time Clipper fan watching the last half of this game, I finally concluded that Eric’s fault is that he dies not play the game like he loves it, only as if is was monotonous work. But hen after watching the replay here I saw a two-fisted thrust….. there it was: celebration.
Kaman should definitely be a starter and one even paired with Okafor. They pair very well. Just don’t let Kaman be anywhere near the ball on offense when it’s clutch time.
