Suns 93, Hornets 78: Arguably the Worst Offensive Game in Franchise History

Brick.

Well that was ugly, gang. How ugly? 28.9%, the Hornets' FG% tonight, is the worst in the 23 year history of the franchise.

Some quick notes:

- Excellent job in three areas by the Hornets:

(1) on the offensive glass, the team pulled down 40% of their own misses. League average is 26%. Obviously, expressed as a percentages, this is independent of the fact that the Hornets' ridiculous number of misses afforded them more rebounding opportunities. Emeka Okafor and Carl Landry were primarily responsible for the offensive glass numbers, picking up 13 between them.

(2) on the defensive glass, the team rebounded 75% of the Sun's misses. League average is 73%. Nothing too spectacular, but nice to see a team effort here, especially Aminu's 5 defensive rebounds off the bench.

(3) The defense was again effective enough. The Hornets allowed 93 points on 87 possessions, around a league average figure. Obviously, Phoenix hasn't been playing well this year, but this is annually one of the best offensive units in the league. There can be no doubt that the offense lost this game.

- And lose it they did. 26 for 90. Yeesh. Shot creation is going to be a problem for this team all year, and minus Eric Gordon, the issue is only exacerbated. Jarrett Jack repeatedly took questionable shots, and in many cases, they were far and away the most viable option the Hornets had. The only real positive I'm taking away from tonight on the offensive end is Greivis Vasquez's 5 assist/0 turnover game. Again, if he can continue to create without giving away the ball, he can be a valuable piece off the bench.

Other than those (rather minor) positives, let's just wash this one away.

On top of it all

I counted AT LEAST 7 wide open looks at the basket that we just missed, that is a bare minimum, generous guesstimate. Officiating was off and on in this game also. That Carl Landry offensive foul in the 4th when we were making our run was complete and utter horsecrap. They got that call ALL game. Gortat leaned his damn knee into Landry and wasn’t even close to set. And 1 that would have made it 6 and kept momentum got erased and game was over after that.

Kaman was just downright terrible in this game. Ariza was just downright terrible also. Everyone else was below average. The shots didn’t fall tonight but I was impressed with Vasquez and Jack still. Jack had a cpl more plays reminiscent of He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, especially in the first with that nasty behind the back dribble into the floater.

Overall, I find it hard to believe we can play much worse on offense and we were still in the game so…

Yes

There is no way this team will shoot this bad again. When Eric comes back the offense will get much better. Not only does he command double teams and support defense, it allows Marco to play against second unit. Everyone will do much better next game out.

One more thought.

JJ in the first quarter put some down right nasty moves on Nash. That was nice. Oh and Aminu tried to get in on the offense. (cannot dribble worth a lick though)

You mean

the crossover to behind the back crossover? That was awesome

by Rohan on Dec 30, 2011 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

Not the one where Nash fell down but the other one.

Also when you have a offense like this where people need to be set up for the most part. We shoudl start running double screens and screens away from the basket.

Playing Aminu 25 feet away from basket

…is curious offensive move. Aminu was essentially a low post back to the basket player at Wake.

Watching Ariza shoot 3pointers and Okafor shoot foul shots makes my head hurt.

Kaman was a slug tonight.

But I am not going to say this game is a harbinger of things to come. Most teams other than OKC and Heat are up and down right now.

Hahaha that's fantastic

Willie Green, 0 for 7; Ariza, 2 for 11. Sounds about right.

by Brian Ball on Dec 30, 2011 11:02 PM CST up reply actions

Willie Green

For all his faults, Green shot 44% off the bench for us last year. That’s probably a lot better than many of the guys will shoot off our bench this year.

Worst half = worst game?

I see your Philly game and raise you this: http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/200603010LAC.html

Pretty sure it was the level lowest score for a half ever too IIRC.

This defeat was not unavoidable

It was obvious last year that sometimes Bellinelli can just suck ass offensively. It was painfully obvious by the mid 2nd that this was one of those game. We can only afford one offensive Ariza at a time. Belli needed to nailed to the bench and replaced by a slasher or shooter. They should have brought in Vasquez, but they didnt. I know hes not a SG, but for sucks sake put in a scorer. It doesnt matter how good your defense is, if your opponent is up by 10, you need scorers. That wasnt Belli tonight.

There were times in the first half when it really looked like the Suns were double teaming everyone on our team.

Ugly Loss but Still 2-1

We’re still 2-1.

Defense kept us in the game at times. But our offense was horrific. We probably won’t set any more franchise records records for bad offense any time soon, but even with Gordon back, this does not seem like a good offenisve team.

Our heroic rebounding kept this score respectable. Okafor had a great rebounding night. He looks like he’s back to his old self. And you forgot aobut Belinelli’s career rebounding high!

I didn’t think Kaman played that badly actually. He had 3 blocks in 19 minutes. He missed 1 of 5, but everyone else was missing badly as well and it’s not like Okafor is a go to scorer either. Not saying Kaman played well, just don’t single him out for the loss. Frankly, considering his recent history, it’s an accomplishment that he’s actually on the court and he played solidly first two games.

A major issue that is becoming quickly apparent is that our bench is horrible on offense. They’ve been sold on D, but on offense, our bench is getting routinely outscored. Even with the occasional good plays from Vasquez and Kaman, through the first 3 games, including the two wins, bench scoring has gone as follows against us:

24 – 39
22 – 33
24 – 38

At least Aminu looked a little more lively this game and getting Gordon back will help since Marco can help the bench shooting a little bit. But still, it’s a major weakness.

Anyway, we’re still 2-1 whcih is decent and let’s hope that Gordon returns to the court soon.

Around the NBA

Minny is now 0-3, which is good for us. But that team is a lot of fun to watch. I see them in the playoffs next year and we can just hope that they don’t get things together that quickly and continue to lose games by 2 points this year. Rubio 12 and 12 off the bench against Miami.

Qpon had 11 off the bench in the Grizzlies win.

Boston and Dallas came up with wins to stop the bleeding.

Washington is in a tailspin. They’re my top pick to finish the season with the worst record in the NBA.

Like Rohan

I envision Rubio and MIN are going to have a fine 2nd half of the season. Adelmann is a very good coach and that team has some talent.

Rubio is a lot of fun to watch

Im rooting for that team to win, next year though! haha

gag

I was at this one. It was nasty. I got to hear lots of silly things, like, “Who is that guy? Take him out of the game!” [Kaman] and, “At least we still have the Saints.”

The crowd was harsh on Kaman. It was just an ugly, ugly offensive night. Gordon should keep us in games, but the shot creation just won’t be there this year.

Reppin' the Lafayette Hornets fans.

Sigh

Don’t like hearing about the crowd getting so down on a recently acquired and very serviceable player.

About How The Offense May Look

More often than not. The team just doesn’t have a playmaker in the lineup without Eric Gordon and Jarrett Jack, for all of his efforts, can’t do it every night. I don’t fault him, specifically, for the team’s struggles tonight. He’s just not that type of player. Belinelli had a lot of tough lock shots but he was active all night tonight on the boards, etc. Kaman was particularly awful all game long. Missing pass outs to wide open players, forcing bad shots, missing easy shots, not looking for his teammates, getting beat for rebounds, etc. He was easily the worst player on the roster. Okafor played hard and Jason Smith competed tonight… overall the team just couldn’t make a shot. And considering they shot a lot of jumpers, it may be like that more often than not.

I still feel like they need more of Landry down in the paint but they may be afraid of congesting it down there and that prevents Jack from doing a lot of what he wants to do offensively (same with Gordon too). But he’s not a jumps hooter and I hope they don’t continue to play him in the David West role. It’s a disservice to his talents.

Tough night all around and it’s a game I’m already hoping to forget.
