This is a dumb trade for the Hornets.

As a Kings fan I’m happy Paul isn’t on the Clippers, but I think the Clipps did have the best asset’s in return. Wonder what the underlying motivation here is.

+1

I’m furious at Olshey. It would have been a great fit, and they could/SHOULD have been able to work something out. Instead he signed old creaky Caron Butler for too much money. I love(d) the Clippers, but Olshey pissed me off with this. He should have been able to play ball

so you wanna give up Gordon and god knows what else for 1 yr of Paul just to cockblock the lakers, knowing he DOES NOT WANT TO BE THERE and REFUSES TO STAY.

Oh my

1) We had better get some damn good picks

2) If we don’t, I have lost all faith in Demps

3) If this happens, the one happy takeaway I have is a great, giant fuc* you to the Golden State Warriors & Los Angeles Clippers for playing hardball, and I hope this egg in their face turns into a pie for a long, long time

4) We had better not just be getting Gasol and Odom and spare parts. If we are the Grizzlies a la “Pau Gasol for Jarvaris Crittenton” I will lose all faith in the future of the franchise. No way we survive if we’re dealing for old expensive guys that can neither be with us in the long-term nor guarantee that their production will be what it’s been in their prime with the Lakers

5) Dell Demps you had better have gotten a good haul. If you gun-jumped when we still have time before the season starts, you’ve lost the fans

6) This had better be a damn good deal and not wrought from desperation and/or expediency.

Relevant quotes
The Hornets are not interested in Gasol (who has three years and $57 million left on his deal), but in the last 48 hours they have put out feelers to try to gauge league-wide interest in the 31-year-old forward.

Houston has been actively pursuing centers. Rockets officials have met with free agents Nene and Samuel Dalembert in the last week. While a source close to Nene said he has not made any decision, rival executives believe he is headed back to Denver. However, Houston is also still in the mix for the longtime Nugget. The Rockets want Gasol, who would become the low-post presence they have craved since Yao Ming went down with injuries.

Sources involved in the talks said the Hornets have been reluctant to close any deal until they are sure they have the best offer. A source said Boston has redoubled its efforts in the last 24 hours to put together a trade for Paul.

With Boston president Danny Ainge believed to be willing to do a deal without assurances that Paul would stay beyond this season, there are indications that the Hornets are still very intrigued by the possibilities with the Celtics.

A potential deal including point guard Rajon Rondo, restricted free agent Jeff Green and two 2012 first-round draft picks (one from the Clippers that is protected in the top 10 for the next four years, the other the Celtics’ pick) would give the Hornets two starters and the potential for more young pieces to come. The package could provide the sort of youthful foundation that Hornets general manager Dell Demps is searching for in a post-Paul era.

But there would be concerns for the Hornets should they make a deal with Boston that doesn’t involve a third team, which potentially could bring more attractive assets. Besides the fact that Rondo and Green are not players the Hornets have coveted, the value of the picks could be minimized if the Clippers become a top-10 team and the Celtics finish near the top again, resulting in a late-20s draft position on the second first-round selection.

A Celtics source said the fact that free-agent center Tyson Chandler is close to a deal with New York — which would effectively eliminate the Knicks’ ability to sign Paul outright as a free agent next summer — has the Celtics pushing harder, believing that if they can make a trade with New Orleans, Ainge and coach Doc Rivers can persuade Paul to sign long term.

If they get some picks this isn’t that bad of a deal. Quality players all around, Kmart can score, Scola is a quality big man, Odom an all around solid player and that Dragic kid has looked pretty good.

the season doesn't start tomorrow you know

i’m pretty sure nobody would malign Demps as “ball-holding” if he was able to get more than an aging 6th-man on the years who got looks with various permutations of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, and Ron Artest on the floor, a good frail scorer who makes his meal ticket/efficiency by getting fouled enough times to get to the stripe 10-20 times a game, and a point guard the Suns with an aging Steve Nash and the Rockets with long-indeterminate status at PG were willing to let loose in exchange for CP3.

Thank God the deal is apparently on hold. It sucks.

how would this have been a bad trade?

look at what the nuggets did – they became a dynamic team with all their mid-level talent they acquired. every one of the guys we would have gotten could start on our team. kevin martin = close to all-star, possible future scoring champion, dragic = steve nash 2.0, scola = amazing rebounder which we sorely need, lamar = time to unleash the beast (if he doesnt retire), not to mention a first round pick! Cmon man Chris Paul is 100% leaving us why would you rather nothing instead of extremely solid assets?

Seriously, hornets fans are complaining about this trade? You get a sixth man of the year in Lamar Odom, one of the best drivers to the basket and foul drawers in the game in Kevin Martin, a solid if not spectacular back up point guard in Goran Dragic, and one of the more underrated players in the game in Luis Scola. You guys made a steal of a trade considering you could have gotten nothing next year. You even did better than what we got for Melo, and people said that was a great trade for us nuggets.

He's a pile of crap. He fouls way too much and his FT% is around 65%.

He can’t distribute and he can’t play defense. All he can do is shoot, but not 3s very well. He was shooting in the 20%s on 3s when the Suns traded him last year.

Demps better flip this guy to someone else pronto.

If Dragic was good and fraught with potential, why would Phoenix, with an aging Steve Nash riding into the sunset, and Houston, with no true PG on the team, both be so willing to toss him asunder? Could it be that he’s not good? I wonder!

Aside from passing Paul off to the hated Lakers, which makes me want to stab out my eyeballs, this actually looks like a potentially good deal for you. Face it Hornets, you weren’t going anywhere if you didn’t get a slew of support players even with Chris Paul. If you get Dragic, Odom, Scola, and some picks, it was a great deal. We did it last year with Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, and the picks for D-Will. It’s going to change up the roster, but it may well be the best way forward.

Good Deal for Hornets

This seems to be a good deal for the Hornets considering the situation. Scola’s numbers (18/8) are similar to D West’s. Martin’s a 20+ scorer, we get a backup pg in Dragic and maybe we trade Odom for a draft pick by the trade deadline. Considering that we were kinda backed into a corner this looks good to me.

Now with this batch of new players, Monty has how many days to get them ready for the season? I’m afraid all we’ll get to is the players introducing themselves to one another and the next minute we’re tipping off against the Suns.

by RedHopeful on Dec 8, 2011 7:01 PM CST reply actions

Well

I agree I’m scared defensively with Martin and Scola. HOWEVER, we do have Ariza and Okafor. If there is any relief, it IS the fact we are very deliberate. We have some very good offensive weapons now and a pretty dynamic PF in Odom.

The more I think about it, I really don’t feel (based on all the rumors) that we could’ve gotten better for our existing system. At worst, we’ve got some very good parts that could be offloaded for picks if our new experiment fails. At best, we’ll have a playoff possible team that just added a whole lot of talent for a 1 year rental. I’m VERY curious about the pick that we’re supposed to get from the Rockets too. Anyone with any insight on this?

by Jamian B on Dec 8, 2011 7:41 PM CST up reply actions

i guess it aint bad

we basically filled our roster and we didnt have to spend too much.
KMART is a good starting point, goran could be a very good starter given playing time, scola is a dwest clone, and i would not be surprised to see odom flipped for picks. also the possible unprotected knick pick might be good

by sd3 on Dec 8, 2011 7:10 PM CST reply actions

I could actually

see Kmart and Scola traded before Odom simply because they do not fit into Monty’s defense first system.

by jtballard2 on Dec 8, 2011 7:12 PM CST up reply actions

Disagree

We have a competent small forward. We don’t have a competent power forward or shooting guard with West still a free agent. Also, keeping Odom would mean sacrificing Ariza, by far our best defensive player.

by Huang Feng on Dec 8, 2011 7:14 PM CST up reply actions

True

I guess with Scola and Odom we can kiss West and Landry goodbye too.

by jtballard2 on Dec 8, 2011 7:35 PM CST up reply actions

Actually

I think I read somewhere that SA was one of the teams interested in a sign and trade for West. I’d hate to see him stay in the SW but I wonder who we could get for him.

by jtballard2 on Dec 8, 2011 7:38 PM CST up reply actions

Disagree

defensively they are liabilities but they fit our system of walking the ball up and getting into a set offense every time. If we learned anything last year, Monty’s scheme with our then existing players kept us in every game, but the lack of firepower really REALLY hurt.

Besides, think about it. Is Martin and Scola THAT much of a downgrade defensively from Belinelli and our zillion SG’s + DWest. I say definitely not.

I’ll be very curious to see Rohan’s post about this but I guess it’ll be more positive than many of our initial reactions. Just remember, getting the best possible deal and having it done before the start of the season was the biggest thing. Could we have gotten something better down the road? Maybe, but it’s nothing any of us would have wanted to go through.

I would like for you guys to read it. I don’t think the Hornets trading Chris Paul is the end of the world, and free agency is not done. I think Dell Demps is not done. I think depending on what happens the Hornets very well could still be a playoff team this year.

That actually kind of

For the reasons I've already mentioned

by RedHopeful on Dec 8, 2011 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

They get to keep CP3,

but he is leaving anyway, and they now wouldn’t get the 6th man of the year and 2 borderline all-stars. As well as a decent backup point guard and 2 draft picks.

by jtballard2 on Dec 8, 2011 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

Just wait and see what happens....

just because it’s off today doesn’t mean it won’t be back on tomorrow or another deal won’t be in the works. Just hold on.

by QueenBee on Dec 8, 2011 8:11 PM CST up reply actions

It also

screws the Rockets who apparently were going to use the money they saved to go after Nene.

by jtballard2 on Dec 8, 2011 8:20 PM CST up reply actions

Rockets actually save money in the deal

If Rockets amnesty Thabeet, they have enough for a max free agent. Personally, I don’t want Nene on a max contract. Either way, not sure how this serves as consolation to you.

by Moochie's Fro on Dec 8, 2011 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not a Rockets fan

I just read that with the trade they were saving $13 million and were going after Nene or Marc Gasol. I think Marc and Pau would be the start of a a pretty good frontcourt.

by jtballard2 on Dec 8, 2011 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

I am a Rockets fan; I only troll here

If the trade still happens, Rockets have following:

$7MM cap space + $11MM KMart + $9MM Scola + $2MM Dragic = $29MM

- $19MM (Pau) = $10MM

+ $5MM (amnesty Thabeet) = $15MM

I hope like hell it’s not Nene, though such a big front-court is intriguing, i must admit.

by Moochie's Fro on Dec 8, 2011 9:15 PM CST up reply actions

Looks like it's official.

According to Yahoo! the commish blocked the trade after the other owners complained. Where were these owners last year when Miami basically did the same thing. I know the players were going to sign with the Heat anyway, but both signings turned into sign and trades.

by jtballard2 on Dec 8, 2011 8:14 PM CST up reply actions

Well see.....

wasn’t this what the part of the lockout was supposed to be about? Because of what happened last year with Miami? We were all questioning what was the lockout for if this sort of thing was still allowed to happen. Other than revenue sharing and other things, I thought they were trying to stop these superteams from forming.

by QueenBee on Dec 8, 2011 8:19 PM CST up reply actions

I can't imagine the trade doesn't go through

It’s not a great trade for Hornet fans, obviously. But it sounds like the other owners are just being crybabies.

If you’re lucky, this gives GSW/Clippers a sense of urgency to finally include Stephen Curry/Eric Gordon in a deal. But I think their respective teams like those players too much. I posted this previously, which wasn’t very popular, as you can imagine. WIthout any leverage, you weren’t going to get anything but dimes and quarters for CP3, so in terms of TOTAL TALENT, Odom, Scola, KMart, Dragic, and a #1 were about as well as you can do. But I don’t see how a re-building team agrees to this package of players.

The other NBA owners,

who technically own the Hornets right now, didn’t want the Lakers to get Paul. We might as well face it, until we have an owner our team will pretty much not get any better.

by jtballard2 on Dec 8, 2011 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

Jazz fan here...

As much as I didn’t like the Lakers getting a player of Paul’s caliber, I like the league crapping on your team’s right to trade CP3 even less. I’m glad Utah didn’t have to go through this stuff & got decent assets for D-Will.

by Waxmaster on Dec 8, 2011 8:57 PM CST reply actions

In my opinion...

This veto is bogus…

The other owners don’t give a darn about New Orleans…

All they saw was CP3 going to a big market team in the Lakers and not to their own. They wanted a new CBA for just this reason— so big market teams couldn’t have free reign… and look what happens… Lakers (almost) acquire CP3.

Go to hell Stern.

by thecobb8 on Dec 8, 2011 8:59 PM CST reply actions

Procedurally, the veto is silly

But I’m conditionally ecstatic that it’s being used (as long as Demps gets a better haul – more than one draft pick – out of this deal).

Unless Demps has a plan to wheel-and-deal some more before the season starts, I’d rather do the awful Boston deal than this load of spare change.

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Dec 8, 2011 9:00 PM CST reply actions

Nope

no way anything else is going to be better now. Good spare parts beats any lousy deal Boston can put together.

by RedHopeful on Dec 8, 2011 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

man, i feel for you.. i really do

Rocket fans have been debating for a while what we could get for Scola or KMart in a trade. I figured there wasn’t much of a market out there, ie, win-now team with cap room and cheap assets to give back. Maybe Demps—if this thing goes through—has a better plan to move them.

Otherwise, as underrated as Odom, Scola, and KMart are, I don’t see why you’d pick up so many 30-year old pieces. (Dragic is a solid throw-in, I’m telling you, though I’m sure that won’t serve as much consolation.)

by Moochie's Fro on Dec 8, 2011 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

So

let’s eliminate Demps now. He’s only an unnecessary middleman. It’s Stern who is running all NOH trades now.

I don't know. All I know is...

HUGE PR mess by the NBA.

1. Trade goes through. I personally don’t like this trade as it really gives the Hornets no real piece to build around. The Clippers were a better trade option, if CP3 had to be traded.

2. NBA blocks the trade for “basketball-related purposes”. Seriously, Stern? Do you just want Howard and CP3 to join the Lakers next year and leave their respective teams with nothing in return?

3. Chris Paul is exploring legal options. As if the lockout wasn’t bad enough, now you have another legal mess to deal with.

As a Kings fan, I would rather have the Lakers’ huge frontcourt disappear than have to deal with it. But CP3 is in NO for the time being, cherish this year, as it will probably be CP3’s last year in NO.

Looking forward to a Lakers collapse.

My favorite
Demps considered resigning his job on Thursday, league sources said, and had to be talked out of it. The Hornets had scored a terrific deal for Paul, a trade that was lauded by some of Demps’ peers throughout the league. Officials involved in the trade talks said the league office was consulted throughout the negotiations, and there was never an indication Demps didn’t have the power to make a deal. In fact, several teams negotiating with New Orleans to get Paul asked the league office, and were told Demps had full authority to execute a trade.

by RedHopeful on Dec 8, 2011 11:09 PM CST up reply actions

Good Finish
"To me, this makes the league feel like it’s rigged, that Stern just does whatever Stern wants to do. He’s messed up the competitive balance of this league a lot worse by killing the deal, because you’ve completely destroyed the planning that New Orleans, Houston did and left them in shambles over this. I’ve never been so discouraged about this league, never so down.

"I mean, come on: Chris Paul is leaving New Orleans in 66 games. He’s gone. And what’s Dell Demps, and that franchise, going to have to show for it?"
